HYDROGEN PEROXIDE SERVICE
The Score-TRICENTRIC

high performance butterfly valve is available designed specifically for hydrogen peroxide service. Materials of
construction, material preparation, assembly, testing, cleaning and packaging are in accordance with FMC recommendations, bulletin 104
for hydrogen peroxide compatibility. Score-TRICENTRIC

valve designs for hydrogen peroxide service are application specific and therefore
must be evaluated on an individual basis. The following information provides general design and application guidelines.
Hydrogen peroxide (chemical formula H
2
0
2
) is an oxidizing agent for organic and inorganic chemical processing as well
as semiconductor applications, bleach for textiles and pulp and a treatment for municipal and industrial waste.
Hydrogen peroxide is not considered to be explosive, but explosive vapours can be formed when peroxide is mixed
with certain organic materials. Also, hydrogen peroxide is not flammable, but does generate large amounts of oxygen
during decomposition that supports combustion.
Hydrogen peroxide is typically produced by an organic oxidation or auto oxidation process.
- Hydrogen peroxide solution is described by concentration as percent by weight of H
2
0
2
in water.
- Hydrogen peroxide is shipped on 70%, 50%, 35% (industrial) and 31% (high purity).
- Hydrogen peroxide is normally stored at 50% or less.
Rules for use and handling of Hydrogen Peroxide:
NEVER CONTAMINATE - hydrogen peroxide can be contaminated by externally introduced materials or by contact with
incorrect materials of construction.
1. Passivation and cleaning - compatible metal surfaces always require thorough cleaning and passivation to
ASTMA380 prior to use in order to remove surface impurities and provide a compatible metal oxide surface for
hydrogen peroxide contact ensuring stability and quality and inhibiting corrosion. Smoothing of surfaces to 63RA
is important because rough surfaces are more active than smooth ones. The following guidelines are crucial for
maintaining safety and quality:
- Perform precleaning using a non-foaming soap solution.
- Degrease with an appropriate solution to remove all traces of grease, oil, dirt and
stains.
- All stagnant pockets must be completely flushed of solutions.
- For 304 or 316 stainless steel passivate per ASTMA380 at approximately 35% nitric
acid for 10 to 12 hours.
- After passivation, the valve parts must be thoroughly rinsed with clean, potable
water.
- Nitric acid must be removed from all pockets since H
2
0
2
will react vigorously with
the acid.
- Inspect valve parts
- Maintain cleanliness throughout assembly, testing and packaging.
- Good weld practice must be used including stainless files and grinders, TIG only not
MIG (copper contacts) never overlap material, use full penetration, inspect for
inclusions.
2. Materials of Construction - Hydrogen peroxide is compatible with a select list of
materials based on grade. The effect of the peroxide on the material is generally
much less important than the materials effect on the peroxide. To ensure adequate
stability the materials are more restrictive and the use of standard industry equipment
is not appropriate.
NEVER CONFINE - Hydrogen peroxide always decomposes, only the rate varies. Several
factors affect the rate of decomposition, including temperature, degree of contamination,
surface activity, PH and concentration. Hydrogen peroxide continuously decomposes to
form water and oxygen with the evolution of heat. A volume ratio of 200:1 of oxygen
liberated to liquid is possible and if trapped, excessive pressure buildup may rupture the
valve (eg. Ball cavity of a ball valve). For this reason dead ends, trap or closed system
must be avoided.
NEVER CONTACT and always have water available - see Installation, Maintenance and
Safety considerations section below.

INSTALLATION, MAINTENANCE & SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
INSTALLATION:
- Use only properly cleaned and passivated equipment - check factory attached tags to
assure that the valve is identified as having been processed for H
2
0
2
service.
- Protect against contamination by keeping storage areas clean and free of combustibles
and maintaining equipment packaging until directly prior to installation.
- Repair all defects immediately.
- All pipelines in which hydrogen peroxide may be locked off (ie. between valves) must
be fitted with a relief valve.
- Welding and flanges are preferred over threaded connections.
- To protect against galvanic corrosion, flange bolt isolation kits are recommended at
any joint with dissimilar metals.
- Never use incompatible material or equipment substitutions.
- Proper pipe supports should be used and occupy the highest position in any rack. This
helps prevent exposure to leaks from other systems.
- Drains should be located at all low points in the system to enable proper drainage
during maintenance or repairs.
- Systems must be cleaned and passivated after the installation is completed.
- Flange gasketing should be Garlock Gylon, Teflon, PTFE, PFA, TFE, Viton A or Prince
Vinyl PP363 - dependent on application.
- Flange bolting ASTM A93 B8M with A 1948M heavy hex nuts, or galvanized, C.5
machine bolts ASTM A320-L7 each with one nut ASTMA194-4.
MAINTENANCE & SAFETY - For safety reasons it is important that the following precautions be taken prior to removal of the valve from the line or before
any disassembly:
- Wear protective equipment chemical safety goggles and rubber gloves as well as neoprene or vinyl acid suit, neoprene boots and full face shield to
protect against any spray.
- Depressurize the line by; shutting off the valve; bleed the line cycle the valve to relieve residual pressure.
- Drain hydrogen peroxide equipment and flush with water before repair or disassembly.
- Cleanliness during repairs is crucial.
- Repassivate if necessary.
- Use only plastic palettes - wood can serve as a source of
combustion.
- Flush hydrogen peroxide spillage with water.
- Never return hydrogen peroxide to its original container -
dilute with plenty of water and discard per regulations.
- Keep hydrogen peroxide storage vented at all times.
