The North Star

Time for An End
It is time to end the
injustice. If our country is
the land of the free then
why must we chain
innocent men, women, and
children? I have heard
many slave stories and I
dont want to hear another
one. How long must we
watch people suffer and
endure pain until we say
that weve had enough?
The life of a slave is a life
that one should never live.
They are forced to work
day and night. Whether it
is scorching hot or their
skin starts to get frostbites,
African Americans are
being forced to work or
they must face the whip. I
have seen these scars, I
have felt these scars, I
have heard the cries of
pain being brought upon
my brothers and sisters.
Mr. Douglas became ill
after working long hours
on the field and told his
master that he could not
keep working with his
condition. His master
responded by kicking him
and beating him
Lincoln served as President 1861-1865.
Abraham Lincoln
The man who had spent his days putting America back
together has died last week. Abraham Lincoln (Abe
Lincoln) died at Penn Quarter, the 15th of April, 1863 by
a fatal shot to his head. He was 56. Lincoln became
president in March 1861. He was heavily associated with
civil rights, the 13th Amendment and freedom of the
people. Born on February 12th, 1809 in Hardin County,
Kentucky, Abraham Lincoln was the second child of
Thomas Lincoln and his wife, Nancy Hanks. due to an
outbreak of a sickness in 1818, much of Lincolns family
died. By the time Lincoln reached Congress he had been
married for 4 years to Mary Todd. He then had four
children:Robert, William, Tad, and Edward Lincoln. His
wife Mary Todd Lincoln will be hosting his military
funeral in Washington DC where he will be transported
by a special black-draped locomotive to his home in
Springfield, Illinois, and be interred at Oak Ridge
Cemetery.
senselessly. Ask yourself,
does freedom ring in this
country? Do you believe
that everyone in this
country is being treated
equally? If you are a
person with values, a
person with morals, a
person with a heart, then
you know that the way of
business in the south
should be abolished. Open
up your eyes and let your
voice be heard. It is time
for an end.

Battle at
Gettysburg
Two years ago, the battle
at Gettysburg was the
turning point of the Civil
War. It was a three day
battle from July 1st to July
3rd, 1863 near Gettysburg
, Pennsylvania. Robert E.
Lee invaded the North and
tried to eliminate the
Union Army. What Lee
didnt know was that Union
soldiers were ready for
them and sent them
retreating. It was one of
the bloodiest battles of the
war. On November 19,
1863, President Lincoln
gave a speech at the
battlefield (now a
cemetery) known as the
Gettysburg Address.
People are saying that it
was one of his most
Interview With The President
With so many things going on in the country, it is
hard to focus on just one thing. Here is a man who
takes on the duties of keeping the country in order,
President Abraham Lincoln. We asked the President
a few questions before his unfortunate death. Here
were his views on certain topics.
Why did you sign the Emancipation Proclamation?
I believe that this country is fed up with the issue of
slavery as much as I am too. Is it not stated in the
Constitution life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
What exactly is the Emancipation Proclamation?
The Emancipation Proclamation is my executive decision
to abolish all slavery in this country and to have all
slaves to be free. Any slave owner that does not set
slaves free is hereby committing a crime and it is
against the law.
What are you view towards the Confederate States?
I have said before that a house divided cannot stand
still; this country cannot and will not run properly
without first being united. I view the Confederates as
members of a large treason to this country.
How do you see America to be in the next couple of
years?
Together, this country can get many things taken care of.
This civil war is only the beginning of a new era for the
United States. I believe that this country will strive in the
next couple of years. It might not be easy, but we will get
there.
Do you think that youve ever made a mistake
powerful speeches to have
ever been spoken. It
brought hope to
Americans, that if we
unite, many good things
shall come in the future.
We shall never fight
brother to brother,
neighbor to neighbor. We
are all Americans.

during your
presidency?
I think that if I did ever make a mistake in my
presidency, it could only help us. There really is nothing
to lose at this point in time. We have lost many men- too
many, on both sides of the battlefield. If anything, my
mistakes will soon aide and put back together the
states.
Can the South function without Slaves?
That is exactly what many Southerners ask themselves.
They do not ask themselves what they can do only how
they can maintain their economic statuses. Slavery is not
the only way to make profits. There is always more than
one way to get the job done.
Will ending slavery mean that blacks can vote and
own land like any other white man?
At this moment, the main focus is to free all slaves. This
is something that will not be easy to obtain. With my
Emancipation Proclamation, all slaves must be free or it
is against the law. Then we can start working on voting
and owning land. Everything takes time.
Do you think that the Confederates will give in?
The Southerners may think that they can function
properly without the North. They even set up their own
government! But if theres one thing that they hide, its
knowing that deep down inside they will wave the white
flag and our country will be united once again.
President Lincoln was assassinated the 15th of
April. There will be a funeral service in Washington
DC where the body will then be transferred to his
hometown in Springfield, Illinois. Mr. Lincoln was
the 16th president of the United States.
Slavery Poems:
On Being Brought from Africa to
America by Phillis Wheatley
'Twas mercy brought me from my Pagan land,
Taught my benighted soul to understand
That there's a God, that there's a Saviour too:
Once I redemption neither sought nor knew.
Some view our sable race with scornful eye,
"Their colour is a diabolic die."
Remember, Christians, Negro's, black as Cain,
May be refin'd, and join th' angelic train.
