a goal achieved& any tiny ositive ste toward a goal achieved or an
obstacle overcome that could kee you from getting to your goal. Start
counting those victories now- #f losing weight were your goal&
achieving the desired weight would be a victory. .ach ound lost would
be a victory and every time you said /no to a temtation that isnt a

goal"setters succeed- 'hey succeed at weight loss& career objectives&
finances& life- Listen to an )lymic or rofessional athlete& a
best"selling author& a successful rofessional& business owner or
entrereneur " they all talk about dreams and goals- 0o& not the dreams
and goals they fantasi2e about occasionally or think about every now and
then or just simly hoe for. 3ut these are dreams and goals that have
created assion in their lives& that move them into daily& monthly and
yearly action& and that bring emotion because of the clear sacrifices
that have been made receding long asired victories. 4es& dreams and
goals create miracles and accomlishment. *nd e5ually imortant& dreams
and goals can create balance& riorities and life"enhancement. So yes&

Cello and welcome to Week Five?(onth 'wo.
We begin (onth 'wo with the toic of 1oal"Setting.
#'ve often said& the major reason for setting a goal is for what it
makes of you to accomlish it. What it makes of you will always be the
far greater value than what you get. 'hat is why goals are so owerful.
'hey are art of the fabric that make u our lives. *nd goal"setting is
where we create our goals.
1oal"setting can be so owerful. #t rovides focus. #t shaes our
dreams. #t gives us the ability to hone in on the e$act actions we need
to take in order to get everything in life that we desire.
1oals are e$citing because they rovide focus and aim for our lives.
1oals are great because they cause us to stretch and grow in ways that
we never have before. #n order to reach our goals we must become better.
We must change and grow.
'here are three comonents to a owerful goal> #t must be insiring. #t
must be believable. #t must be one that you can act on. When your goals
insire you& when you believe them& and when you act on them is when you
will get them-
1oals also rovide long"term vision in our lives. We all need lots of
owerful& long"range goals to hel us get ast short"term obstacles.
Life is designed in such a way that we look long"term and live
short"term. We dream for the future and live in the resent.
Anfortunately& the resent can roduce many hard obstacles. Fortunately&
the more owerful our goals +because they are insiring and believable,
the more we will be able to act on them in the short"term and guarantee
that they will actually come to ass-
So& let's take a closer look at the toic of 1oal"Setting and see how we
can make it forceful as well as ractical. What are the key asects to
learn and remember when studying and writing our goalsD
# believe there are four main areas of emhasis>
%. .valuation and ;eflection. 'he only way we can reasonably decide what
we want in the future and how we will get there& is to first know where
we are right now and secondly& what our level of satisfaction is for
where we are in life. *s we focus this month on goal"setting& the first
order of business and our toic this week is for each of us to be
serious about taking some time for evaluation and reflection.
:. =reams and 1oals. What are your dreams and goalsD 0ot related to the
ast or what you think you can get& but what you want. Cave you ever
really sat down and thought through your life values and decided what
you really wantD 'his isn't something that someone else says you should
have or what culture tells us successful eole do or have. 'hese are
the dreams and goals that are born out of your own heart and mind. 'hese
are the goals that are uni5ue to you and come from who you were created
to be and gifted to become. 0e$t week we will show you e$actly how to
find out what you want from life.
8. S.(.*.;.'. 1oals. S.(.*.;.'. means Secific& (easurable& *ttainable&
;ealistic& and 'ime"sensitive.
Secific> =on't be vague. .$actly what do you wantD
(easurable> Euantify your goal. Cow will you know if you've achieved it
or notD
*ttainable> 3e honest with yourself about what you can reasonably
accomlish at this oint in your life " along with taking into
consideration your current resonsibilities.
;ealistic> #t's got to be do"able& real and ractical.
'ime> *ssociate a timeframe with each goal. When should you comlete the
goalD
We will send some time in two weeks looking at how to aly the
S.(.*.;.'. test to your goals to make sure they are as owerful as they
can be-
!. *ccountability. 'hink of the word 9accountable.9 #t means to 9give an
account.9 When someone knows what your goals are& they hel hold you
accountable. Whether it is someone else going through this rogram with
you +have you thought about inviting a friend to join you on this
one"year journeyD, or just someone you can give the basic idea toF
having a erson who can hold you accountable will give you another added
boost to getting your goals- )n Week .ight we will show you how to set
u an accountability artner.
So> .valuate?;eflectF =ecide What 4ou WantF 3e S.(.*.;.'.F Cave
*ccountability. When you ut these ! key ieces together& you are
utting yourself in a osition of ower that will catault you toward
achieving your goals and the kind of life you desire.
We will cover each of these oints more in deth over the ne$t month.
3ut today& # want to focus on the first one& .valuation and ;eflection.
1oal Setting> .valuation and ;eflection. 'he basis for knowing where we
want to go is knowing where we have come from and where we are. #t is
also knowing how well we have achieved the things we have reviously set
our eyes on. 'his is the basis of evaluation and reflection. We need to
understand how to look at what we have done and use it as a latform for
what we want to do.
'he rocess of evaluation is relatively simle& but there can be a few
basic variations. 'he imortant oint though is that you have a rocess-
So here is a basic rocess of evaluation and reflection.
%. Find a 5uiet lace. ;eflection is best done away from distraction. #t
gives you the mind sace to think.
:. 'ake a regular time. Whether it is once a week& every other week&
once a month or 5uarter etc.& be sure to set aside a regular time at
regular intervals to evaluate and reflect.
8. Look at what you have accomlished and where you are. 3e secific. 3e
honest. 3e ruthlessly truthful.
!. Write it down. Gee a record. 'his gives you the chance at the ne$t
stage of evaluation to see e$actly where you were last time. 'his kees
it as objective as ossible.
H. Look forward and set your ne$t goal. Stretch yourself according to
what works for you.
'he above is a good basic version of the rocess of evaluation and
reflection. #f you have not done this before& then this will get you
going. 3e sure to follow the general idea and set aside time for your
evaluation and reflection.
'he urose of evaluation is twofold. First& it gives you an objective
way to look at your accomlishments and your ursuit of the vision you
have for your life. Secondly& it is to show you where you are so you can
determine where you need to go. #n other words& it gives you a baseline
from which to work.
We have all heard the 5uote that the une$amined life is not worth
living. 'o evaluate and reflect brings us face to face with who we are
and what we have become. (ore imortantly& it allows us the time to
dream and create a vision for what we want to become- )nly when we take
time out of our busy schedules can we get into the state of mind and
5uietness of heart that we need in order to find that inner lace where
we see what we are and what we will become. 'hose who never take time to
evaluate and reflect will blow to and fro through this life& living by
the forces of culture& circumstances& societal ressures& and
unfortunately& ersonal weaknesses. 'hose who take the time to evaluate&
however& will find that they are like an oak tree in a storm. 'hey have
a firm foundation. 'hey will know where they are going& how to get
there& and that they ultimately will get there& no matter what comes
their way-
# would strongly encourage you to take a coule of hours this week to
evaluate and reflect. *t the beginning of this month we encourage you to
see where you are and note it in your workbook so that as the months
rogress and you continue a regular time of evaluation and reflection&
you will see just how much ground you are gaining " and that will be
e$citing-
3elow& <hris Widener is going to walk you through this week's Euestions
and *ction .$ercises.
Antil ne$t week& let's do something remarkable-
7im ;ohn
Ci& this is <hris Widener and in this section we will take a look at
some 5uestions that will hel us think deeer about goal"setting& and
then we will ut some action stes together that will cause us to ut
