The Seattle Department of Transportation will apply a protective sealant called microsurfacing to streets in the Arbor Heights neighborhood in August and September. Crews will first prune overhanging tree branches and later place no parking signs. During application, which takes one day per street, residents should plan to park elsewhere as the sealant needs time to set. Residents will receive notices about the schedule with details on timing for their specific block. The project aims to protect and preserve local streets through this cost-effective treatment.

This protective sealing, referred to as microsurfacing, is a cost-effective method to renew the road surface and create a protective layer that preserves the underlying structure and prevents the need for more expensive repairs in the future. Project benefits Protect the residential streets in the Arbor Heights neighborhood Prevent the need for larger, more expensive road repairs in the future Create a smoother driving surface Project schedule The selected contractor is expected to begin construction in early/ mid-August. Prior to starting the microsurfacing work, overhanging tree limbs must be cleared to 11 vertical feet from the edge of pavement in order to allow the microsurfacing equipment to pass. Tree pruning is currently planned to take place in early August. The entire project is expected to be completed by September 2014. Work in front of any one property is only expected to last one day. Residents will receive letters with specific work schedules in advance of the work. How it will work Street sweepers will remove debris from the road in advance of the treatment application. Drains, inlets and utility covers will be temporarily covered for protection. During the treatment application, large equipment will apply an emulsion coat. The seal typically requires two to four hours to set. Microsurfacing must take place during dry weather to work effectively. In the event of rain, the work will be rescheduled.
