Happy birthday to you, hip Pip hooray!
Pip Piper, volunteer extraordinaire, turned a very respectable age this week, 90 indeed, and
we congratulate him or this achievement and the act that he still works like a tiger,
volunteering or many organisations ! genealogy research at the library, advising at the
"iti#ens Advice $ureau, monitoring N%&A developments, serving on the residents association
committee with a watching brie on council decisions, planting with 'riends o (ana )sland
and delivering newsletters hot o the press* +e is a star* ,uess what he did to celebrate this
milestone - he went sky diving. Pip says that during his time in the air orce he came close
to having to parachute out a couple o times but this tandem dive rom //,000 eet was an
exhilarating experience*
Pips huge community contribution was acknowledged recently when Pip and (ary "asey and

everything to save the day*

'RFF community response training is available that will prepare you to leap into action in any
emergency* Alan Reader, PRAs man in the community emergency response hot seat, says,
?2e need more people who are trained to set up an emergency centre and start the process
o organising ater a maDor event* 2e also need to train people as radio operators to run
communications in emergency situations* Reconnaissance skills are also vital and you will
learn how to set up systems ater an emergency* )deally every street group in Plimmerton
should have somebody trained*@

suggesting that clearway times be extended wherever possible and take account o sports
activity at Ngati &oa* And the clearway should start earlier each day to accommodate school
and early childhood centre drop o4pick up to avoid those rustrating snarl ups at peak times*

railway line in Plimmerton Gomain* 2e have been stating the case or this over many years as
there was no barrier between the park grounds and the railway line except an ancient three
string arm ence rom the old days when the area was armland* Now there is a good barrier
so parents watching kids playing sport know that siblings and dogs can scamper around playing

&he local ire brigade were recently called to a ire in Pukerua $ay caused by aulty wiring*
&he amily involved were already reeling rom a double whammy* &heir son had Dust been
diagnosed with a bone condition ater a rugby inDury and their daughter is the little girl who
contracted Eymes disease rom a tick bite on a trip to Australia* &his amily were very
thankul that the ire brigade arrived in time to put out the ire beore too much damage was
done*
2ith all their troubles they made the eort to go in to thank the ireighters and took them

=ur small population o extremely rare and endangered shore plovers which had lown
themselves rom (ana )sland has been almost eliminated by rats* &he precarious place they
had settled in, in ront o the ire station, was regularly visited by hordes o screaming kids,
people with dogs, visiting cats and, atally, rats* 2hen the dead birds were ound, G="
