Dispute over boundary land between Messene

and Megalopolis
The remains of a large statue base were brought to light at the eastern side of the
Doric temple in the agora of Messene. An unusually long inscription is written on
the front stone slab of the base consisting of 190 lines arranged in four parallel
columns. It is a decree of the Messenian council describing in detail the various
phases of a complicated legal procedure for a dispute between Messene and
Megalopolis over boundary areas. A body of seventeen high officials of the Achaean
League, all of them historical personalities of the first half of the 2nd c. BC, under
the leadership of the general Apollonidas son of Etearchos from Sicyon, undertook
the settlement of the dispute in the year 182 BC. This body rejected the first
territorial claims of Megalopolis over the region around the cities of Andania and
Pylana. Megalopolis however came back supported by the inhabitants of the
Arcadian town Kaliai claiming this time ownership over another area called
Akreiatis and Bipeiatis given to them by the Messenians on condition to collect the
fruits and deliver half of it to the Messenians. A court of 147 judges from the island
of Mytilene conducted the judicial examination in the holy groove of Apollo
Karneios at Andania. 140 of the judges voted in favor of the Messenians. A third
arbitration focused on the dispute over the collection of fruits from the above
mentioned area and the fine imposed on the Messenians took place this time at
Aigion in front of a court of six judges from Miletus. Their judgment was irrevocable
and favored the Messenians again.
The decree should be written on the base of the horsemen near the Council
House in the sanctuary of the goddess Messana as stated in the last lines of the text.
There is no doubt: the Doric temple brought to light in the agora was dedicated to
the cult of Messene the deified mythical queen of Messenia, daughter of king
Triopas from Argos. The horsemen must have been the Dioskouroi. In the cella of
Messene's temple Pausanias saw the cult statue of the goddess made of marble and
gold, while a wall painting by Omphalion, pupil of the famous painter Nikias from
Athens, decorated the cella wall around the statue.
