Experts Find
Remains Of
King Richard III
By Jill Lawless
SCIENTISTS say they have found the
500-year-old remains of Englands King
Richard III under a parking lot in the city
of Leicester.
University of Leicester researchers say
tests on a battle-scarred skeleton unearthed
last year prove beyond reasonable doubt
that it is the king, who died at the Battle
of Bosworth Field in 1485, and whose re-
mains have been missing for centuries.
Richard III, the last Plantaganet King
of England, has been found, said the
universitys deputy registrar, Richard
Taylor.
Osteologist Jo Appleby said last month
that the study of the bones provided a
highly convincing case for identifcation
of Richard III.
And DNA from the skeleton matches a
sample taken from a distant living relative
of Richards sister.
The last English monarch to die in
battle, Richard was depicted in a play by
William Shakespeare as a hunchbacked
usurper who left a trail of bodies includ-
ing those of his two princely nephews,
murdered in the Tower of London on
his way to the throne.

THE EUROPEAN Union last month
agreed to begin random DNA checks
on meat products in a bid to put
a lid on a spreading scandal over
horsemeat, while British authorities
announced traces of horse had been
found in school meals, restaurant
dishes and hospital food, as well as
supermarket products.
A rundown on a scandal that continues
to spread:
o WHERE DID EUROPES
HORSEMEAT SCANDAL BEGIN?
In mid-January, Irelands food safety
watchdog announced that it had dis-
covered traces of horse DNA in burger
products sold by major British and Irish
supermarkets.
The mislabeled products came from
Irish processor Silvercrest Foods, which
withdrew 10 million burgers from store
shelves.
Irish offcials frst blamed an imported
powdered beef-protein additive used to
pad out cheap burgers, then frozen blocks
of slaughterhouse leftovers imported from
Poland an indication of the complexity of
the food-supply chain that was about to be
revealed to an alarmed European public.
o WHERE ELSE HAS HORSEMEAT
BEEN FOUND?
Traces of horsemeat have turned up
across Europe in frozen supermarket meals
such as burgers and lasagna, as well as in
in fresh beef pasta sauce, on restaurant
menus, in school lunches and in hospital
meals.
Millions of products were pulled from
store shelves in Britain, Ireland, France,
Spain, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and
Norway after the scandal broke, and
supermarkets and food suppliers were
told to test processed beef products for
horse DNA.
Then, several British supermarket
chains including Morrisons and Tesco
said their tests had been negative so far.
But Britains Food Standards Agency said
29 of 2,501 products tested contained at
Runners And Riders In
Europes Horsemeat Scandal
least one percent horse DNA. All were
burgers, lasagna and meat sauces sold by
supermarkets and catering frms.
The scandal has also spread beyond
supermarket foods. Whitbread PLC, Brit-
ains largest hotel and restaurant company,
said last month that horse DNA had been
found in lasagna and burgers on menus at
its outlets including Premier Inn hotels and
Brewers Fayre and Beefeater Grill restau-
rants. Whitbread said it was shocked and
disappointed at this failure of the processed
meat supply chain.
Offcials also said horsemeat was pres-
ent in cottage pies delivered to 47 schools
in Lancashire, northern England, and in
Tabloid Slams Novelist o
Mantel Over Kate Comments
By Jill Lawless
A NOVELIST, a duchess and a tabloid
newspaper have ignited an explosive
debate in Britain: Is it all right to criticize
a pregnant Kate?
The Daily Mail last month ran a front-
page broadside against two-time Booker
Prize-winning author Hilary Mantel for
what it called her venomous attack
on the former Kate Middleton, now the
Duchess of Cambridge.
Within hours, the Internet was ablaze.
Prime Minister David Cameron joined
in the criticism of Mantel while others
rushed to her defense.
In a speech earlier last month, the
writer had characterized the 31-year-old
wife of Prince William as a jointed
doll on which certain rags were hung
... a shop-window mannequin, with no
personality of her own.
Mantel said that Kate, as a royal con-
sort, appeared to have been designed by
committee and built by craftsmen, with
a perfect plastic smile and the spindles
of her limbs hand-turned and gloss-
varnished.
COMPLEX
Mantels speech, reprinted later in
the London Review of Books, was about
the British publics complex relation-
ship with royalty over the centuries
a relationship both symbiotic and
voyeuristic.
For the Daily Mail, this became an
astonishing and venomous attack on the
Duchess of Cambridge.
The newspapers front page juxta-
posed pictures of the author and the duch-
ess alongside the front-page headline: A
plastic princess designed to breed.
It quoted Mantels speech at length,
although it did not note that the 60-year-
old author was describing what she saw
as a view of Kate constructed by the press
and public opinion.
Online reaction was divided, with
some defending Mantels words as
provocative and thoughtful and others
All Dogs In England To o
Get Microchips By 2016
AUTHORITIES say all dogs in England
will have to be ftted with microchips
by 2016.
Britains Environment Department
says the chips will help reunite owners
with lost or stolen pets, promote animal
welfare and take the pressure off animal
shelters.
Many British pet owners already have
veterinarians insert chips under the skin
of dogs, cats, rabbits and horses in a bid
to keep track of their animals.
The Environment Department says
60 percent of Britains eight million pet
dogs already have microchips, which
can be scanned and matched to their
owners details.
But offcials say the option will be-
come mandatory in three years. Owners
who refuse to ft their dogs with chips
face fnes of up to 500.
Joe Biden Meets PM o
Cameron At Downing Street
US VICE President Joe
Biden joined British
Prime Minister David
Cameron for a security
meeting last month at
Downing Street.
The visit came short-
ly after the US govern-
ment expressed reservations about Cam-
erons plans to hold a vote on Britains
membership in the 27-nation European
Union. Cameron leads the Conservative
Party, which has many Euroskeptics in
its ranks.
Cameron and Biden joked easily
before Biden sat in on a UK National
Security Council meeting.
So you signed up for another four
years? Cameron said, in reference to
the Democratic Partys recent victory in
presidential elections.
It was easy, nothing to it, Biden
said.
The US vice president said he was
delighted to take part in the British
meeting since he spends half my life
at US security meetings.
Cameron told Biden the gathering of
British military chiefs, intelligence off-
cials and political leaders around a table
was a new practice in Britain.
Parliament Votes For
Legalising Gay Marriage
BRITAINS parliament voted heavily
in favour of legalising gay marriage
on February 5, but Prime Minister
David Camerons authority in his own
party took a blow as his Conservatives
split in two over the measure he had
championed.
In the frst of several votes required
for its passage, the lower house of
parliament backed the legislation by
400-175, but more than half of Cam-
erons 303 lawmakers voted against or
abstained, signalling deep unease with
it and his leadership.
Just days before the vote, more than
20 heads of local Conservative associa-
tions delivered a letter urging a delay
in the vote to Downing Street.
During a debate that lasted more
than six hours, many Conservative
MPs denounced the legislation, say-
ing it was morally wrong, not a public
priority, and unnecessarily divisive,

Skips Conclave
Amid Accusations
By Nicole Winfield
and Gregory Katz
CARDINAL Keith OBrien, Britains
highest-ranking Catholic leader, said last
month he wouldnt take part in the con-
clave to elect the next pope after being
accused of improper conduct with priests
an unprecedented frst head to roll in
the mudslinging that has followed Pope
Benedict XVIs decision to resign.
Benedict accepted OBriens resigna-
tion as archbishop of St Andrews and
Edinburgh submitted back in Novem-
ber because he is due to turn 75 next
month, the normal retirement age for
bishops. But simultaneously, OBrien
issued a statement February 25 saying
he would also skip the conclave because
he didnt want to become the focus of
media attention at such a delicate time
for the church.
OBrien has said through his spokes-

500,000 Bet Win, Stopped By
Football Refs Final Whistle
A MYSTERY gambler was on the verge of
winning 500,000 when a football referee
blew the fnal whistle for a game, just as
the ball was about cross the goal line that
would have created the score for his potential
big win.
The unlucky mystery punter staked 3 on
a string of FA Cup upsets over a weekend
last month, reported The Mirror.
Three of the results panned out as he pre-
dicted but he watched in horror as ref Kevin
Friend ruled out the last goal he needed in
Leeds fourth round clash with Spurs.
Ladbrokes, his local bookies, said it would
have been the greatest outside wager of all
time had the whistle blown a second later.
The Lucky 15 combination bet meant
the tipster could still console himself with a
nice but less spectacular 17,000 win. Lad-
brokes Alex Donohue said: The referee has
most defnitely ruined our punters dream.
The gambler, of Oldham, Greater Man-
chester, predicted the televised match would
fnish 3-1 to the Championship side.
With Leeds winning 2-1 in injury time,
Spurs goalie Brad Friedel went up for a corner
and left his goal exposed.
The ball then fell to Leeds midfielder
Rodolph Austin, who struck from his own
half towards the empty net.
Friend then became the betters worst
enemy when he blew his whistle with the
ball about to trickle over the line.
The gambler had correctly predicted
Oldhams 3-2 victory against Liverpool,
Brentfords 2-2 draw with Chelsea and St
Mirrens 3-2 win against Celtic in Scotland.
Britain Faced With Mocking
Romanian Media Campaign
BRITAIN was on the receiving end of a media
campaign that makes fun of the UKs guarded
feeling over Romanian job-seekers.
The ad campaign, called Why dont you
come over?, plays up the attractions of
Romania over Britain and claims: Half of
our women look like Kate. The other half,
like her sister.
The campaign teases the British with the
words: We may not like Britain, but youll
love Romania.
It notes that Prince Charles bought a
house in Romania in 2005. He is known
to be a big fan of Romanias Transylvania
region and its rural traditions.
The campaign also boasts that our draft
beer is less expensive than your bottled
water.
Another ad points out that BBC motoring
show Top Gear said Romanias beautiful
Transfagarasan Highway was the best road
in the world.
The pro-Romania campaign is a response
to British media reports that the UK govern-
ment is considering negative ads about
Britain to put off migrants.
UK curbs on workers from Bulgaria and
Romania are set to be lifted next year.
Dummy Run In The Snow For
Emergency Services
AN EMERGENCY response team responded
to a person being motionless in their car in
the snowy weather last month, only to fnd
the person was a mannequin.
The East of England Ambulance Service
rushed to the locked car only to fnd it cov-
ered in snow and ice, leading to concerns
the occupant may have been suffering from
exposure to the cold. The paramedics quickly
realised there had been a mistake.
Ambulance service spokesman Gary
Sanderson said: Following assessments at
the scene, it appears the person in the car
was actually a mannequin.
This is a very unusual incident our crews
attended this morning and the person who
dialled 999 did the right thing as they could
not gain access to the car and thought the
person was not breathing.
Sanderson added the mannequin had
been found in bizarre circumstances.
It was sitting upright in the rear seat,
fully dressed and with a blanket wrapped
around it.
Inverness Being Terrorised
By Giant Eagle Owl
LOCALS in the city of Inverness in Scotland
could be said to be in a fap, ever since a
Giant Eagle Owl has been swooping down
and attacking pedestrians out in the open.
Police have warned the public to keep
clear of the massive bird of prey, which is
being blamed for two attacks in Inverness.
The owl, which has a 6ft wingspan, is
believed to have escaped from an aviary
or been released into the wild, reported The
Scotsman.
Crowds of twitchers have been drawn to
Castle Street in the Highland capital, where
the bird has regularly been seen.
Two men say they have been attacked
by the owl in recent days. One of them was
knocked out and left in a pool of blood.
Local expert Tommy Horne, who runs
an owl sanctuary, has been trying to catch
the creature.
He has been attempting to grab the bird
with a large net and has been offering it dead
rabbits as bait.
Horne said: I will keep trying. Ive never
failed yet, but he seems to be well-fed at
the moment. There is a plentiful supply of
pigeons about.
He said the bird may have been looking
for food when he swooped on the two men
who were attacked.
But he added: Ive been working with
birds for 25 years and Ive never heard of
an eagle owl attacking anyone.
Kiwi Parrot Steals Brits
Money, Cop Has A Good Laugh
IT WAS defnitely not Pretty Polly that few
off with a British tourists cash last month in
New Zealand.
And to make things worse, when Peter
Leach reported that a parrot had fown into
his camper van and lifted 600 from his dash-
board, a policeman burst out laughing.
Leach was visiting the countrys beauty
spot Arthurs Pass when the kea parrot
dropped in and took off with his money.
He said the bird few into the vehicle and
snatched the cash from the dashboard while
Leach was taking photographs.
The 52-year-old, from Glasgow, was
unaware of the theft until two fellow tourists
pointed it out, reported the Scottish Daily
Record.
A Canadian couple walked by and said,
Weve just seen that bird take something out
of your van, Leach said.
It turned out the parrot had taken all of the
money he had except for 20 in his pocket.
He reported the incident to the police, but the
chances of retrieving the currency are slim.
The offcer was very serious for the frst
few questions, Leach said. Then he said,
Do you mind if I just stop to laugh? I sup-
pose I cant blame him.
Keas are native to New Zealand and
known for their intelligence. They have been
blamed for vandalising cars, breaking off
wing mirrors and windscreen wipers.
Zoologist Mark Cawardine described them
as a devilish mountain parrot feared by hire
car companies.
Leach was determined to continue on
his travels, and it was thought that he had
borrowed money from friends.

HOOKED on Dr Who, could have a double
meaning for a Texan woman who had made
all 11 Dr Who characters from crochet.
Allison Hoffman used her impressive hook
skills to fashion all of the timelords.
The 35-year-old, from Austin, had been
asked to supply the ultimate sci-f soft toy
present for a geeky husband.
I made the dolls for a woman that wanted
to give her husband a Christmas present
that would blow him away, she said. He is
a huge Dr Who fan and she knew hed love
these toys. Hes actually building a custom
cabinet to display them now! Before taking
on this project I had only seen the newer Who
and not very many episodes, but now I feel
like I know all of these people personally!
Ive done a ton of research on them and
would easily consider myself a Whovian at
this point.
My favourite to make was the Fourth
Doctor, Tom Baker. I loved making that scarf!
Id love to meet any of them in person and
give them their own likeness.
Hoffman took up crotchet as a hobby but
soon found her skills were in demand and
started her own business, CraftyisCool, fve
years ago.
Three John Lennons Arrested
For Crimes In Brazil
A CRIMEWAVE in Brazil has seen three dif-
ferent men named John Lennon be arrested
and one being killed.
The Beatles were massive in Brazil with
Lennon the most popular and thousands of
women named their sons after him.
The John Lennon crimewave was re-
ported in the city of Belo Horizonte, capital
of Minas Gerais state, reports the Brazil
Dispatch.
The most recent arrest came last month
when John Lennon Ribeiro Siqueira, 19,
was arrested for attempting to rob a lottery
agency.
In January, John Lennon Fonseca Ferreira,
22, was arrested during an attempted rob-
bery at a home in Belo Horizonte.
Before that, police arrested John Lennon
Camargos Gomes, 22, who they say com-
mitted fve homicides in the city.
But at least not every John Lennon in Brazil
turned out bad. John Lennon Silva Santos,
22, plays defense for one of Rio de Janeiros
most popular football teams, Botafogo.
Zombie Teddy Bears Produced
As A Valentines Day Horror
MANY BRITISH lovers celebrated St Valen-
tines Day a little differently last month by
giving their special one a Zombie Teddy
Bear.
A British artist created a range of zombie
teddy bears just in time for Valentines
Day.
Phillip Blackman describes his Undead-
Teds as repurposed soft toys transformed
into fuffy, bloody horrors to keep you awake
at night.
The 45-year-old, who lives near Ipswich
in Suffolk, makes them using old toys and
movie-standard gory effects.
The inspiration came from a rather
obscure in-joke between my partner and
I, he said. She had a terrible cold at the
time and wed been talking about a gift for
a friends baby.
With a very stuffy nose teddy-bear kept
coming out as deady-bear and we joked
about zombie teddies that creep from under
your bed at night to feast on your brains
while you sleep.
Each UndeadTed takes in excess of eight
hours to make, not including the time it takes
for glue, paint and varnish to dry.
I price them individually depending on
size, complexity, materials used and time
taken. Most are listed at around the 40 to
60 mark.
Theyve all been great fun to make but of
all the ones Ive made so far my favourites
are the Valentine ones, holding their torn-out
hearts aloft as a grisly gift to their lovers.
Horrible.
Police Dog Files A Witness
Statement, As Protocol Demands
AN OFFICIAL statement was sent to a court
that had been persistently demanding paper-
work from a West Midlands police station
last month.
But there could be more serious conse-
quences following a form being submitted
that had apparently been written by a dog
and signed with a paw print.
The brief statement, on behalf of police
dog Peach, read: I chase him. I bite him.
Bad man. He tasty. Good boy. Good boy
Peach. And, the statement was signed
at the bottom with a print of the Alsatians
pawmark.
Offcers are said to have become frus-
trated after they continually told the CPS that
Peach was a dog.
The matter will be investigated, DCI
Julian Harper, from West Midlands Police,
told Huffngton Post.
Bank Robbery Toy Set Criticised,
Sending Wrong Message
TEACHING youngsters right from wrong is
what a toy maker suggests will be the effect
of their bank robbery toy set.
The toy, meant for children between four
and 10, is made by German manufacturers
Playmobil who have been slammed by the
anti-gun lobby for their 35 Bank and Safe
toy pack.
It comes with everything needed to simu-
late a bank robbery, including armed robbers
and a safe full of gold.
Danny Bryan of Communities Against Gun
and Knife Crime, said: We dont want to be
encouraging young people to look at these
sorts of things.
I think it is horrendous that young people
are given all these images to shape them. It
is sending out the wrong message.
But Playmobil marketing manager Jamie
Dickinson responded: We have been pro-
ducing police play sets for 35 years...
One thing our customer feedback tells
us is that it is important that children can
be taught, through play, the importance of
recognising good from evil and baddies
from goodies.
Our cops and robbers, in the guise of
policemen, police cars, criminals and jails,
enable these scenarios to be created.
Endangered Newt Delays
Building Of Police HQ
AN ENDANGERED newt is posing quite the
nuisance for one British police force.
Durham Constabulary says the building
of its new police headquarters has been
delayed following the discovery of newts on
the grounds near its site.
The department said it is waiting to hear
back from Natural England, the body respon-
sible for protecting Britains environment, on
when it can proceed with construction.
Adrian Vass, Natural Englands area man-
ager, said the case is the highest priority
and it is working fat out to ensure that the
great crested newts can be safely moved.
The endangered newts population has
declined dramatically during the last cen-
tury.
Vass noted that since great crested newts
hibernate underground in the winter, the earli-
est that development work could go ahead
would be in May 2013.
Mercedes Only
Vehicle Remaining
As Car Park
Around Dug Up
A DRIVER decided barriers and signs
were not going to stop them from parking
in a car park last month, and when they
claim the vehicle they will experience
the shock of fnding their vehicle and the
tarmac beneath it being the only piece of
the car park left.
The area was blocked off by diggers
at Edinburgh Waverley railway station,
but when they turned up the next day,
they found the Mercedes parked in the
middle of the site.
Nonetheless, the workers got on with
the job as planned and dug up the surface
around the marooned car.
However, they also built a small ramp
so the vehicle could be removed.
A Network Rail spokesman said:
Part of the car park had been cordoned
off so we could begin resurfacing it and
improve the lighting too.
Whoever the driver was, he or she
decided to move the barriers and park
in the worksite anyway. We did the work
but we left a ramp for them to exit and
will be happy to return their vehicle if they
contact us.
The work is part of Network Rails
100m refurbishment project of the
station.

CRIMINALS WATCH OUT
SPYWARES ABOUT!
Criminals who post a threat to national se-
curity could be caught before they have even
committed an offence with software used to
track their online behaviour, it is claimed.
Their future movements can be predicted
by mining vast amounts of information from
social media websites, including Facebook
and Twitter.
After a few clicks, a detailed picture of their
life, including information about their friends,
can be built and used to predict where they
might be in future and who with.
Campaigners described it as the greatest
challenge to civil liberties and digital freedom
of our age.
The extreme-scale analytics programme
called Riot, or Rapid Information Overlay
Technology has been created by Raytheon.
The US-based group, the worlds ffth largest
defence contractor, said the software had not
yet been sold to any clients. However, it was
shared with the US Government as part of a
joint research effort in 2010 to help build a
national security system capable of analysing
trillions of entities from cyberspace.
Nick Pickles, of Big Brother Watch, said:I
wouldnt be surprised if the government
and companies in Britain are looking at
using it.
A spokesman from Raytheon added that
Riots innovative privacy features are the
most robust that were aware of.
A NEW CASE FOR HOLMES
AND WATSON
Art lovers were in for a surprise when
Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson were among
the guests at a private viewing.
Artist Cliff Hanley is holding his frst public

The characters were chosen as a link to the
heyday of the former railway station at Green

The collection is made up of 12 paintings
and a sculpture. Many of the paintings are
portraits that started life as a photograph of
a passer-by and were then adapted.
The exhibition is called By Green Park

CLEANER AIR FOR THE CAPITAL
London is to have the worlds first
ultra-low emission zone, the Mayor has
announced.
The aim is to create the zone in central
London, which would deliver dramatic
benefts to air quality and increase take-up
of low-emission vehicles.
Mayor Boris Johnson said:Creating the
worlds frst big city ultra low-emission zone
has the potential to be a game-changing
moment in the quality of life of our great
capital.
My vision is a central zone where almost
all the vehicles running during working hours
are either zero or low-emission. This would
deliver incredible benefts in air quality and
stimulate the delivery and mass use of low-
emission technology.
Transport for London will prepare plans
for the new zone and look at the feasibility
of introducing it from 2020.
HEDGEHOGS AND ALMONDS?
He was the Heston Blumenthal of his day
and his recipes show the celebrity chef is
way behind the times.
While experimental chef Blumenthal has
wowed audiences with weird creations, such
as snail porridge and bacon and eggs ice
cream, his ideas are old hat.
John Farley was serving up hedgehog with
almonds and a dish of snow to packed
restaurants 230 years ago. Now his 1783
cookbook is up for auction, offering sage
advice on how to prepare pigeons, cod heads
and woodcocks for dinner.
But Farley was not just interested in
creating dishes for the expert cook. He also
listed recipes for those short of money and
dedicated a section of the book to the nour-
ishment of the sick.
As principal cook at The London Tavern,

TEAM GB WIN FURTHER MEDALS
Stars of the London 2012 Olympic Games
picked up more medals for their sporting
achievements last month at Buckingham
Palace.
Olympic gymnast Louis Smith, who
scooped silver and bronze, described being
made an MBE as the proudest moment of
my life. Smith, 23, went on to win BBCs
Strictly Come Dancing.
Natasha Baker, who won two gold medals
in dressage at the Paralympics, was also
honoured with an MBE. The 23-year-old,

The Angry Royals
IN WHAT sounds like a matter of dj vu, the Royal Family are once again in uproar
over the publication of photographs of the Duchess of Cambridge sunbathing on a
beach in her bikini on the Island of Mustique, where previously the late Princess
Margaret used to spend her summer holidays.
The Italian magazine, Chi, once again published pictures of the Duchess, showing off her

SIGNALMAN TRAPPED IN TOILET
DELAYS TRAIN
Passengers aboard a Hereford to London
Train were baffed as to why they were held
up for more than an hour last month, and
were probably annoyed as well when they
discovered it was because a signalman was
stuck in a loo.
The Rail worker left his post to answer a
call of nature but was left fushed with embar-
rassment when the lock jammed.
The driver of a Hereford to London train
heard the mans cries for help after he was
forced to stop because he could not make
radio contact. Colleagues eventually man-
aged to set the signalman free by forcing
the door open with a crowbar, reported the
Daily Telegraph.
The 3:13pm service was delayed during
the rescue near Worcester Foregate Street
station.
Rail bosses gave the reason as signalling
problems but rail enthusiasts became privy
to the truth through an internet forum.
One user joked: Where are all the relief
staff when you need em...?
Network Rail apologised for the incident
and blamed the rail systems ageing build-
ings.
A spokesman added: Much of the railway
network is still controlled from Victorian sig-
nal boxes, which often have outside loos.
POP! GOES THE ARTIST
The iconic works of Pop artist Roy
Lichtenstein are brought together at a new
exhibition, started last month at the Tate
Modern and runs until May 27.
It brings more than 130 of his works
together and is the frst major retrospective
since the artists death. It hopes to show
something of the breadth of his creative vision
and complexity behind it.
Sheena Wagstaff, one of the shows
curators, explained: Lichtenstein saw
himself very much in the painting tradition.
But he found his voice using the energy of
pop culture.
Lichtenstein didnt talk about his work
as much as some other purveyors of pop.
He said: After a while, if no one is inter-
ested, just turn out the lights and go home.
Theres no chance of that happening any
time soon.
LONDON ANARCHIST BOOKSHOP

One of Britains oldest anarchist publish-
ers says its east London bookshop has been
frebombed.
Freedom Press set up more than 100
years ago said that no one was injured
in last months overnight fre, but that its
shop and electrics have been seriously
damaged.
The publisher said on its Twitter page
that it doesnt know who is responsible for
the blaze.
Londons Metropolitan Police said it was
called by the fre brigade around 5:30am to
reports of a fre in progress at the bookshop
on Whitechapel Road.
Police say the incident is being treated as
suspicious and that inquiries into the blazes
circumstances are under way.

London air hub in 2012.
Including interest payments on debt and
one-off items, Heathrow reported a net loss

Kingsmead Technology College in Hednes-

Pupils are so keen that after just 18
months they are already making their mark
in professional competitions, reported The
Mirror.
And teachers say the ancient hobby is an
effective teaching aid in a range of lessons
including maths, physics, geography and
biology.
Teacher and loft manager Richard Cham-
bers, who is in charge of the new pigeon
syllabus, said: The children love it. The
sport helps the kids with maths when theyre
fnding out who has won, and working out
velocities by calculating distance and time.
Geography benefts as a pigeon fnds its

as it fies over hills and valleys. And history
is another area where the children are learn-

The airport saw an eight percent rise
in revenue to 2.46-bn for the year of the
London Olympics, and an underlying proft
of 46.4m.
There were 471,341 fights to and from
Heathrow in 2012, just below its absolute

Owner Heathrow Ltd formerly BAA said
that unlike its rivals in France, Germany,
the Netherlands and Dubai, Heathrow is
full and its capacity constraints prevent any
meaningful increase in the numbers of fights

This means the countrys ability to trade
with emerging economies is constrained,
with potential long-term consequences for UK

Heathrows owners hope to build a third

strong opposition. The British government
has ordered a review of Britains airport ca-
pacity, but it is not due to report until 2015.

Mantels comments were completely
misguided and completely wrong.
UNFAIR
Claudia Joseph, author of Kate: The
Making of a Princess, said it was unfair
to describe Kate as lacking in personal-
ity. Joseph said the duchess was instead
someone who has learned to keep her
feelings hidden and private.
The reason William chose Kate
is because she is discreet and doesnt
show her feelings in public, Joseph
said. That doesnt mean she has no
feelings.
Others argued that Mantels real
target was not Kate but the press. On
the Daily Telegraph website, journalist
Catherine Scott said Mantels speech
was an attack on how some parts of
the media canonize royal women ...
while also rendering them voiceless and
purposeless.
The royal couples offce declined to
comment.
Meanwhile, large numbers of journal-
ists and photographers were on hand to
watch the duchess as she visited a center
for recovering addicts. It was one of her
frst public appearances since announc-
ing in December that she was pregnant.
News reports commented on the duch-
esss baby bump, gestures, demeanor and
Max Mara dress.
Mantel won the prestigious Booker
Prize in 2009 for Wolf Hall and in 2012
for Bring Up the Bodies, novels set at the
court of King Henry VIII and centered

This is not evolution, its revolution,
added Edward Leigh, another Conservative
member of parliament, saying marriage
was by its nature a heterosexual union.
Although the vote went Camerons way,
many analysts believe he will now have to
address a deep seam of discontent running
through his party.
He made a last minute televised state-
ment ahead of the vote, arguing gay mar-
riage would make society stronger.

thats why gay people should be able to get

He later hailed the result of the vote as

views of many in it who are uncomfortable

sacrifcing core party values on the altar
of populism.
Justin Welby, the newly elected Arch-
bishop of Canterbury and head of the
worlds 80 million Anglicans, used his
frst comments after being confrmed last
month to reiterate his own opposition to
gay marriage.
OPPOSTION
Faced with strong opposition from
the Anglican and Catholic churches, the
law would not force them to conduct gay
marriages, but critics say gay people may
launch legal challenges.
A YouGov poll for the Sunday Times
last month showed 55 percent favoured
legalising gay marriage, while 36 per-
cent opposed it. However, the same poll
showed the issue was not one that con-
cerned most voters.
The new law proposes legalising same-
sex marriage in 2014. It would also allow
civil partners to convert their partnerships
into marriages.
The bill is still many stages away from
becoming law, and some of its opponents
called on Cameron after the vote to consid-
er amending it to appease their concerns,
promising they would try to frustrate its
progress through parliament.
Accused Police Killer Changes Plea To Guilty
A 29-YEAR-OLD man accused of murder-
ing two unarmed British police offcers
in a gun and grenade attack dramatically
changed his plea to guilty last month,
midway through his trial.
Dale Cregan had denied killing Fiona
Bone and Nicola Hughes, but admitted the
murders, replying guilty as a court clerk
read out the charges.
The two offcers were killed as they re-
sponded to a burglary call near Manchester,
northwest England, in September.
Prosecutors said Cregan who had
made the false emergency call waited
for police to arrive, then opened fre with
a Glock pistol.
He fred 24 shots at Bone, hitting her
between fve and eight times. Hughes was
shot eight times, including three times in
the head as she lay on the ground.
As he fed, Cregan lobbed a military
fragmentation grenade into the yard of
the house where the police offcers lay,
prosecutors said.
The case provoked shock and outrage
in Britain, where firearms are tightly
controlled and few police offcers carry
deadly weapons.
Cregan continues to deny murdering
father and son David and Mark Short, who
were killed in separate incidents last year.
Prosecutors say those killings stemmed
from a feud between two Manchester
crime families.
Gascoigne In Hospital, No Fears For His Life
PAUL GASCOIGNE, was recovering in
a hospital in Arizona in the United States
last month after reacting badly to a detox
program in his battle to beat alcoholism,
according to people close to the former
England midfelder.
Gascoigne, who made his name by
starring in the 1990 World Cup, few to
Arizona to receive urgent treatment for
alcohol addiction after a relapse. His life
isnt believed to be at risk.
Paul has experienced severe complica-
tions with his detoxifcation, Gascoignes
long-time therapist, Dr John McKeown,
said in a statement released by Britains
Press Association. This is not unusual
for someone who has been drinking as
heavily as he has.
McKeown said Gascoigne was trans-
ferred to an intensive care unit at a hospital
in Phoenix so he could be monitored and
be completely satisfed that there are no
other complications to his health.
The hospital has reassured me that he is
up and about walking, McKeown added.
There are no fears for his life.
McKeown was reacting following
comments by Gary Mabbutt, a former
teammate of Gascoignes at Tottenham,
who frst revealed that Gazza had been
admitted to hospital.
Its not a life-threatening situation and
Paul is back on the road to recovery and
hopefully soon he will be back into the
clinic to continue his rehab, Mabbutt told
Sky Sports News.
Footballers past and present have
offered support to Gascoigne, one of
Englands most talented and much-loved
footballers, after seeing images published
of him in ill health at a charity function
last month.
A group of close friends, including
former England teammate Gary Lineker,
organized for him to fy to a treatment
center in the US.
Queen Tops Britains Female Power List
SHE COMMANDS obedience only from
her staff and her corgis, but the Queen
has been named Britains most powerful
woman by a BBC radio program.
The monarch topped the list of 100
female figures announced last month
on Womans Hour, though she is above
party politics and her role in government
is limited to formalities.
The list was dominated by business
leaders and politicians. Home Secretary
Theresa May Britains interior minister
ranked second, followed by Ana Botin,
chief executive of Santander UK bank.
The top five also included Supreme
Court judge Brenda Hale and Elisabeth
Murdoch, chair of television company
Shine Group and daughter of media mogul
Rupert Murdoch.
The list was assembled by a panel that
included journalist Eve Pollard, politicians
Priti Patel and Oona King and crime novel-
ist Val McDermid.
Pollard said those in the list were
judged to have power because they had
reached a place where they have control
of policy, of direction, of infuence, of
staff.
She said she hoped the roster would
shine a light on those sectors where too
few women are getting to the top, like
politics, FTSE companies, the military
and journalism.
Others who made the list included Jus-
tine Roberts and Carrie Longton, founders
of the website Mumsnet; Random House
CEO Gail Rebuck; and Harry Potter
author JK Rowling.
Among those omitted was the former
Kate Middleton, wife of Prince William.
Moodys Downgrades UK
Rating From AAA To AA1
CREDIT RATINGS agency Moodys
Investors Service downgraded Britains
government bond rating one notch from
the top AAA to AA1 February 22, citing
weaknesses in the economys medium-
term outlook.
Moodys said subdued growth pros-
pects and a high and rising debt burden
were weighing on the British economy.
The agency said rising debt meant a de-
terioration in the shock-absorption capacity
of the governments balance sheet, which
is unlikely to reverse before 2016.
It said, though, that the UKs credit-
worthiness remains extremely high, and
its outlook was stable.
Moodys said that a combination of
political will and medium-term fundamen-
tal underlying economic strengths will, in
time, allow the government to implement
its fscal consolidation plan and reverse the
UKs debt trajectory.
For the British government, the move
was unwelcome but not unexpected. All
three of the big rating agencies Moodys,
Standard & Poors and Fitch had placed
Britains rating on negative watch, as the
economy continues to struggle.
The British government is in the midst
of a program of spending cuts designed to
reduce the nations hefty defcit, but the
austerity program has failed to stimulate
economic growth.
The UK emerged from a nine-month
recession in the third quarter, when GDP
grew by 0.9 percent. But the economy
contracted by a worse-than-expected 0.3
percent in the last three months of 2012.
Treasury chief George Osborne said
in a statement that the downgrade was a
stark reminder of the debt problems facing
our country, with a debt accumulated
over the years exacerbated by Europes
economic crisis.
Far from weakening our resolve to
deliver our economic recovery plan, this
decision redoubles it, he said, promising
to press on with debt-cutting.
We will go on delivering the plan that
has cut the defcit by a quarter, and given
us record low interest rates and record
numbers of jobs, Osborne said.

ON FEBRUARY 20, 2013 the Supreme Court
released a decision in the case Chaidez
v United States. The decision addressed
whether the rule established in Padilla v. Ken-
tucky applies to persons whose convictions
became fnal before the rules announcement
in May 2010. In Chaidez v United States, the
Supreme Court held that the requirement that
defense attorneys inform criminal defendants
of the deportation risks of guilty pleas, which
was frst established in the Courts decision in
Padilla, does not apply retroactively to cases
already fnal on direct review. This article will
review the rule established in Padilla then
focus on how the decision in Chaidez limits
Padillas sweeping impact.
In March 2010, the US Supreme Court
made a landmark decision in Padilla v Ken-
tucky requiring defense attorneys to provide
affirmative advice to noncitizen clients
regarding the immigration consequences of
guilty pleas. Padilla involved a US veteran of
Vietnam and permanent resident of the US for
forty years who faced deportation after plead-
ing guilty to transportation of a large amount
of marijuana. The Court acknowledged that
deportation is a unique and particularly severe
penalty, as well as an important consequence
to many defendants. Therefore, an attorneys
failure to provide active advice on immigration
consequences would constitute ineffective
assistance of counsel under the Sixth Amend-
ment of the US Constitution. The Court went
on to establish what type of advice would
be required in specific circumstances to
establish effective assistance. However, the
decision left a number of unanswered ques-
tions, including whether the rules established
in the case would apply retroactively.
In Chaidez v United States the Supreme
Court addressed whether the rule established
in Padilla would apply retroactively to a 2003
felony conviction and 2009 removal proceed-
ings. In 2003, the government charged Chai-
dez with mail fraud for her involvement in a
false claim for $26,000 against an insurance
company. Pursuant to her attorneys advice,
Chaidez plead guilty to the charges, which
constituted an aggravated felony under

the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant
Responsibility Act meaning that Chaidez was
subject to removal regardless of her status as
a lawful permanent resident. In 2007, Chaidez
applied for her US Citizenship, however, her
application was denied and she was placed
in removal proceedings in 2009. In January
2010, Chaidez fled a motion asking that her
plea be disregarded because in light of the
decision in Padilla she believed her lawyer
violated her right to effective assistance fail-
ing to inform her that pleading guilty to an
aggravated felony might result in her removal.
Before addressing Chaidezs Sixth Amend-
ment concerns, the Court had to frst decide
whether the rule in Padilla should apply to
advice provided by defense attorneys before
the rule was established in May 2010.
The Supreme Courts consideration of
whether to allow the retroactive application
of the Padilla rule focused on the application
of the rule established in Teague v Lane,
which stated that a new procedural rule
could not be applied retroactively to a col-
lateral attack on a criminal conviction. The
Court concluded that Padilla established a
new procedural rule because Padilla required
consideration of a new threshold question:
whether advice about deportation was cat-
egorically removed from the scope of the
Sixth Amendment right to counsel because
it involved only a collateral consequence
of a conviction, rather than a component of
a criminal sentence? Further bolstering its
conclusion, the Court stated that the ruling
in Padilla answered an open question about
the Sixth Amendments reach thereby altering
the law of most jurisdictions and imposing a
new obligation on attorneys. After determin-
ing that the rule established in Padilla was a
new procedural rule, the court applied Teague
holding that defendants whose convictions
became fnal prior to Padilla cannot beneft
from its holding. Therefore, the Courts deci-
sion in Padilla, does not apply retroactively
to cases already fnal.
man that he is contesting allegations made
in a British newspaper that three priests
and a former priest have fled complaints to
the Vatican alleging that the cardinal acted
inappropriately with them. The Observer
newspaper did not name the priests, but
it said their allegations date back to the
1980s. There were no details about the
alleged inappropriate behavior.
It was the frst time that a cardinal has
said he was staying away from a conclave
because of personal scandal, and comes
in the wake of a grass-roots campaign to
shame another cardinal, retired Los Ange-
les Cardinal Roger Mahony, into refrain-
ing from participating because of his role
protecting sexually abusive priests.
PARTICIPATE
Mahony, however, has said he will par-
ticipate in the voting for the new pope.
With OBriens decision and the ill-
ness of an Indonesian cardinal, there are
expected to be 115 cardinals under age 80
who are eligible to vote in the conclave.
Separately Benedict changed the rules
of the conclave, allowing cardinals to
move up the start date if all of them arrive
in Rome before the usual 15-day waiting
period between the end of one pontifcate
and the start of the conclave. Benedict
signed a legal document, issued February
25, making some changes to the 1996
Vatican law governing the election of a
new pope. It was one of his last acts as pope
before resigning the previous week
The date of the conclaves start is
important because Holy Week begins
March 24 and Easter Sunday is March
31. In order to have a new pope in place
for the churchs most solemn liturgical
period, he would need to be installed by
Sunday, March 17, a tight timeframe if a
conclave were to start on March 15, as per
the previous rules.
fellow cardinals before the conclave. That
assumed the cardinal electors would want
to know details about the state of dysfunc-
tion in the Vatican bureaucracy and on any
potentially compromised colleagues before
possibly voting one into offce.
Benedict appointed the three men last
year to investigate the origins of leaks
of the popes documents, and they had
wide-ranging powers to question cardinals.
The leaked documents revealed petty
wrangling, corruption, cronyism and even
allegations of a gay plot at the highest
levels of the Catholic Church.
OBriens decision to remain home rath-
er than participate in the conclave made
him the frst head to roll in the remarkable
two weeks since Benedict, 85, stunned the
world and announced he was becoming the
frst pope in 600 years to resign. The pope
said he simply didnt have the strength of
mind and body to carry on.
RESIGNED
The Vatican confrmed that OBrien had
resigned as archbishop of Saint Andrews
and Edinburgh but insisted that the ac-
cusations against him had nothing to do
with his resignation. The Vatican said the
pope accepted the resignation on February
18 under canon law due to OBriens age;
he turns 75 on March 17. The Vatican
spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi,
refused to say whether the allegations had
any effect on Benedicts decision to accept
OBriens resignation, saying merely that
Benedict was clearing his tasks before
retiring himself.
OBriens decision to skip the conclave
is far different from that of Cardinal Ber-
nard Law, who was forced to resign as
archbishop of Boston in 2002 when the US
sex abuse scandal erupted. Law, accused of
having covered up the actions of pedophile
priests, participated in the conclave that
elected Benedict and kept a plum job of
archpriest of one of Romes main basilicas
until his retirement.

UK-US TAX INFORMATION
ASTONISHING statistics emerged last month
about the difference in property values
between London and the rest of the UK. The
net value of the top ten wealthiest boroughs
in London like Westminster, Kensington and
Chelsea outstrips the worth of all the proper-
ties in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland
added together.
Indeed, if you take the leafy suburb of
Elmbridge in Surrey, nestling between the
Thames and the M25 and inhabited by stock-
brokers, 131,000 souls in all, they reside in
homes worth 31bn. Head north four hundred
or so miles to Glasgow, home to 600,000
people, and there you will fnd the total value
of all its property is 29bn.
Londons richest borough alone, West-
minster, is worth 95bn, more than twice the
value of Edinburgh and three times greater
than Englands third biggest city, Bristol.
Estate Agency Savills conclude that their
research indicates that wealth is increasingly
concentrated in fewer hands. Property prices
have risen dramatically since the fnancial
markets plunged and wealthy foreigners
moved into the South East. Elsewhere in the
UK property has fallen in price. The dilemma
for the government is that people cannot af-
ford to purchase or rent property where there
are jobs available.
WORSE
And a diffcult situation is about to be made
worse as a new measure aimed at reducing
housing beneft is introduced next month.
The government argues that 21bn of
taxpayers money is wasted on housing relief
claimed by 670,000 households. What they
want is a more effcient use of the properties
once called council houses, now styled social
housing. To address this issue they have
ordained that everyone of working age will
have their housing beneft docked if they have
a spare bedroom. That means some of the
poorest people losing 14 a week on average
and as much as 80 a month.
This bedroom tax is a two-pronged attack
in order to bring down the housing beneft bill,
and to free up under-occupied social housing
to help over-crowded families. Part of the
housing beneft, however, goes to private
landlords charging extortionate rents, safe
in the knowledge that the public exchequer
will pick up the tab. It would be far cheaper
if the government by controlled private rents
as the Germans do.
DISTURBING
The more disturbing aspect of the policy is
penalising tenants for having empty rooms.
There are all manner of reasons for under-
occupation. The government stipulates that
children under ten, regardless of gender,
can share a room. When they get to ten,
they will naturally and reasonably want
separate rooms. There are people who are
permanently disabled or bed-ridden who will
have one room while their partner/carer will
take another. A single mother may have the
misfortune to have a son in the army away
in Afghanistan and keep a spare room at
home for him.
These are the sorts of over-occupation
which will be penalised from next month.
What tenants should be doing is moving
into smaller one-bedroom houses. This sim-
ple act solves the problem at a stroke. Except
for one awkward fact: there are 180,000
people over-occupying two-bed properties
but only 70,000 single bedroom properties
available. Sadly, most of these have people
living in them too.
And one area in which there is little activ-
ity is house build-
ing. It has not been
helped by legislation
that over the years
has allowed council
houses to be sold
off. It is reckoned
that over two million
council-owned prop-
erties have been sold
off since 1980.
DISAPPEARED
Contrary to popular opinion it is not just
Conservative governments that advocate
such sales, though council houses disap-
peared in huge numbers during Margaret
Thatchers premiership. It was the Labour
Party manifesto in 1959 which set the ball
rolling promising council house sales, though
they lost the election that year.
Initially the idea was for the local council
to use the proceeds of the sales to replace
their housing stock. But then the money had
to be used to pay off council debt with the
result that the housing stock available at an
affordable rate for locals simply shrank to
next-to-nothing.
Since 2005, the right to buy your council
house has been hedged with conditions.
You need to have lived in it for at least fve
years and you cannot put your house on the
market as soon as you have bought it. In fact,
nowadays you have to offer the house back
to the council or housing association from
which you bought it.
ATTRACTIVE
The Conservatives have a range of propos-
als to make council house sale more attrac-
tive and to use the money to revitalise the
housing market and generate cash to spend
on new housing. The Right to Buy discount
has been increased to a maximum of 75,000
or 60 percent of the house value depending
Property Values Reveal The Gap
Between The Rich And The Poor
on which is lower. You will have to keep the
house for at least fve years before it can be
sold on but for each house or fat sold the
council will have to build an additional house
at an affordable rent.
It all sounds fine and dandy but the
real trouble is that the largest social hous-
ing stocks remain in the least attractive
places: you can imagine how hard it is to get
reasonably-priced council accommodation
in Elmbridge and that helps to explain the
huge discrepancy in housing values across
the country.
Current trends suggest the housing market
will rise by about four percent in London
and the south while staying fat elsewhere in
2013. Looking further ahead, Savills reckon
that prices in the next fve years will rise by
about 11 percent. Allowing for infation this
actually means a fall in property prices.
This is no bad thing unless you are trying
to make money by investment in buildings.
Most young people havent got a hope in hell
of being able to afford a house.
CATER
Housing experts say that Britain needs a
quarter of a million new homes a year to cater
for the extra households. At current rates we
are building exactly half of those. It means
that there is ever greater pressure to fnd
homes for rent at affordable prices.
Recently released fgures from the 2011
census show that the numbers renting have
risen from 31 to 36 percent in the last ten
years. What is worse is that one in four pay
at least half their take-home pay for rent to
keep a roof over their heads, and even worse
rent rises are continuing at 13 percent since
demand is outstripping supply.
These are bad days to be poor and in
rented accommodation.
John Polley

AMONGST THE US tax returns we prepare at
Transatlantic Tax, there are growing numbers
of non-residents with US rental properties.
These generally need to fle a 1040NR form,
but their due fling date can be June 15, 2013,
rather than April 15, 2013. One of the ques-
tions on the 1040NR asks for details of days
spent in the US during the past three years (to
make sure the fler is not really a resident!).
An increasing number of people say, Oh,
Ive never been to the United States, which
always amuses me. Their belief in location,
location, location covering an entire unseen
country, is impressive if not exactly prudent.
There are people out there doing a mighty
good sales job for the US!
As non-residents they are not eligible for
a Social Security Number, but need to apply
for an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identifca-
tion Number). Although you may think the
IRS would happily give out these numbers
to prospective tax flers, the reality is rather
different. Firstly, the applicant must show
they need the number now, rather than that
they will need it at some time in the future.
So there is very little opportunity for advance
planning! Secondly, the IRS wants to be
sure the person they are issuing the ITIN to
really is the person they are claiming to be.
Documents are necessary to establish both
that you are a foreign person and that you
are who you say you are. The only single
document that meets these requirements
and is accepted without further evidence is
a foreign passport.
Not surprisingly, few people are willing to
hand their passport over to the IRS. A copy
is acceptable, but since last year this must
be a certifed copy and the certifcation must
The Alternative To A Social Security Number!
be provided by the authority that issued
the passport. For this purpose, notarization
will not do and neither will certifcation by
anyone else!
Clearly it is much easier to get this certi-
fed copy whilst you are in the UK, but often
people dont realize they need it until they
are here. And sometimes for example, if a
property is being sold that has been for per-
sonal use, rather than rented this has to be
done quite quickly. In these circumstances,
we have to contact the local Consulate offce.
Our nearest offce is in Los Angeles, and
they require a personal appointment by the
applicant, which obviously adds to the time
and cost. Not all consulates require this. The
Canadians in Los Angeles provide certifed
copies after mailed requests and turn the
copies around in one day! But I guess there
are many more of them needing to do this,
so personal appointments would be time-
consuming for everybody!
Although the form to apply for an ITIN is
not complicated, the IRS will return requests
that do not meet the necessary standard.
So cutting corners with providing the right
certifcation is not recommended! From the
beginning of 2013, the IRS is issuing ITINs
with a limited life. They will be valid for only
fve years, and its then necessary to go
through the process all over again. Clearly a
growing department of the IRS!

Insurance Company Pays Off Mr Bean After Crash
MR BEAN actor Rowan Atkinson has successfully claimed 910,000 to fx his
smashed-up McLaren F1 supercar, it has been reported.
The Blackadder stars repair bill is believed to be the highest ever recorded in
Britain.
And after the year-long work following the August 2011 crash, Atkinsons annual
insurance premium is now thought to be as high as 60,000.
Atkinson, whose Mr Bean act returned to a worldwide audience during the
Olympics opening ceremony last summer, suffered a shoulder injury in the crash
involving the 240mph car, which is thought to be worth around 3m.
Ben Stagg, a senior client manager at specialist insurers RK Harrison, told the
online Daily Mail: It costs between 10,000 and 15,000 a year just to keep a
McLaren F1 insured off-road in a garage.
WWI Truce Footy Match To Be
Replayed In Commemoration
PLANS on commemorat-
ing the anniversary of the
Christmas truce during the
First World War are under-
way. A football match is to
be played on the battlefelds
of Flanders.
The Government is talk-
ing to the Football Asso-
ciation and the National
Childrens Football Alliance
about how the 1914 matches
in no mans land can be
remembered.
Defence Minister Andrew
Murrison said a football
match was a no-brainer in
terms of an event that is go-
ing to reach part of the com-
munity that perhaps might
not get terribly entrenched
into this.
Prime Minister David
Cameron raised the pos-
sibility last year of football
matches forming part of an
extended series of events to
mark the centenaries of key
moments during the First
World War.
EARLY
Speaking to The Guard-
ian, Dr Murrison indicated
that it was an idea was being
pursued although planning
was still at an early stage and
discussions are ongoing.
I think football has a
particular part to play be-
cause of the totemic signif-
cance of the Christmas truce
in 1914, he said.
We have been in touch
with Football Association
and the National Childrens
Football (Alliance) to see
how this can be done. I know
they are enthused and have
already clocked the fact that
other countries are thinking
along similar lines.
He added: It is clear the
Christmas truce is going to
be commemorated in a very
significant way. It had no
real relevance to the outcome
of the war but at that deeply,
intensely, personal level, it is
something that people really
do latch on to.

LEWIS WORK is almost done, winding up
Gail about a dream life in Italy so she takes out
a loan on her house No really, you shouldnt
have, I implore you, my angel, coos Lewis,
twirling Gail round his little fnger. Shes putty
in his hands, even learning Italian for Lovers
from a cheap DVD. Just as Gail and Lewis
get cosy on the sofa and Gail kisses Lewis
on the soft furnishings, in walks Audrey and
catches her daughter canoodling her ex-lover,
ex-soulmate, ex-friend.
Lewis discovers Gails online bank details
and tries to log in but cant fnd her password.
He blackmails Kylie into passing him the
password and robs Gail of her cash. Before
heading off with her stash, Lewis tells Gail
hell meet her to break the news to her family
that theyre running away to live in the sun.
But Lewis doesnt turn up, not in the fesh
anyway. Instead, he sends Nick a text tell-
ing him to pop Gails Italian for Lovers DVD
into the machine. And its Lewis whos the
main feature, a DVD hed made to tell Gail
he didnt love her and that hed robbed her
blind. Im afraid Ive been rather a naughty
boy, he coos. All Gail can do is have a good
cry: Hes broken my heart and ground it into
the foor with the heel of his built-up shoe.
He wore built-up shoes? asks David, to
which both Audrey and Gail sigh and nod
yes. The cad.
Over at the Barlows, Steve serves divorce
papers on Tracy on the grounds of irretriev-
able breakdown due to unreasonable behav-
iour hers, not his, of course. Tracy stomps
around the living room with Ken and Deirdre
ignoring her histrionics. Sandwich, Steve?
Deirdre offers from the kitchen as Tracy goes
into toxic meltdown. No thanks, Deirdre,
replies Steve as Tracy begs Steve to retrieve
the irretrievable, unbreak the breakdown but
Steve remains unmoved. Tracy starts a new
job at Underworld and Rob sends her pack-
ing. No, really, he sends her packing with
Kirk, which is not quite the management role
Tracy was looking for but we all have to start
somewhere and where better than training in

Max, the serial womanizer has once a again
betrayed Tanya, though hell get off on a
technicality this time: This time it happened
while he and Tanya were separated; she
having thrown him out rather than admit to
him that she had cancer (yes, crazy). Tanya
has once again taken him back (natch!),
and is fghting for him (why?), but how did
he manage to marry someone else during
that brief time without having been divorced
from Tanya frst? Were not quite sure, but
it seems theres more trouble ahead (isnt
there always?)...
Across the Square, Kat has betrayed Alfe
too many times to count, and maybe thats
why, it seems, his supply of forgiveness
for her has run out. She pleads for another
chance but he just doesnt want to know.

weeps in her hospital bed and lies to the cops.
Theres only one way Tyrone can see to get

Elsewhere last month, Sylvia waltzed back
into Roys Rolls from America with secrets
and her suitcase. She tells a stunned Roy,

Dont just stand there with your sausage in

her belongings in it, sent over from Milton in

Sylvia replied: Yes, you used to play with
your little dinkies in it. Anyway, we see Sylvia
on the phone to Milton in the States and its
clear things are over between them, but she
hasnt told Roy that bit yet. She also hasnt
told him that shes skint and she pretends
shes lost her purse in town.

We interrupt our regularly scheduled recap
to bring you news about EastEnders on PBS
station WLIW-Channel 21 New York. In case
you didnt realize it, EastEnders broadcasts
on WLIW on Wednesday nights at 10pm and
right now we are in the midst of a fund drive
to keep it on the air.
WLIW has contacted me to let us know
that the recent on-air fundraising drive for
EastEnders this year did not raise enough
money for WLIW21 to buy another year of
the series. We are $15,000 short of what is
needed and the new contract with the BBC
must be signed at the end of March. If we
EastEnders fans cannot raise that money
by then, EastEnders will no longer air on
WLIW21. They have made it very clear that
this is not any kind of threat or bluff: Its just
an economic reality for the station.
It is actually a testament to the relationship
the EastEnders fan community has developed
with WLIW21 over the last seven years that
they did not just cancel the show. Instead,
they contacted me to let us know that the
show is in trouble and are giving us the op-
portunity to help them keep EastEnders on the
air. Please know that our loyal viewership and
involvement with WLIW21 has been a contin-
ual source of pride for the station. They love it
that they broadcast a show that viewers are
so passionate about that we independently
mobilize to partner with them, to fund it and
keep it on the air. This is the very defnition
of Public Broadcasting! But another reality
is EastEnders is one of the most expensive
shows that WLIW21 purchases and so we
fans need to support it every year.
If you would like to help keep EastEnders
on the air on WLIW (and we hope you do!),
you can fnd out how here: http://E20Laun-

**Just as with the drives weve organized

Report: Police Used Dead Childrens IDs
By Raphael Satter
THE GUARDIAN newspaper says that
Londons Metropolitan Police Service
stole the identities of dozens of dead
children to use as aliases for undercover
offcers, mining those childrens personal
histories to build covers and even issuing
fake passports in their names.
The allegation is another potential
embarrassment for Scotland Yards under-
cover program, which has previously been
rocked by revelations that police spies had
sex with their targets and fathered children
with activists under surveillance.
It wasnt exactly clear how long or
often the police used the dead childrens
identities. The Guardian said it had seen
a document suggesting that around 80 of-
fcers used such identities between 1968
and 1994, but said that one case may be
as recent as 2003.
Police said in a statement last month that
they had received a formal complaint about
the practice and appreciate the concerns.
The practice is not something that would
currently be authorized, they said.
SPYCRAFT
Stealing the identities of dead people
is a classic piece of spycraft and features
prominently in Frederick Forsythes famed
1971 thriller The Day of the Jackal.
But lawmakers and law enforcement
offcials were left wondering whether tak-
ing on the identity of a dead child was an
appropriate technique for British police.
Opposition lawmaker Keith Vaz told Sky
News that the parents of those involved
should be informed immediately.
The Guardian, which has run a series of
stories exposing the seamy side of Scotland
Yards undercover work, based its story on
detailed accounts provided by two under-
cover offcers neither of whom it identifed
by name and an ex-girlfriend of a third
one, identifed with a pseudonym.
The newspaper said all three men were
members of Scotland Yards Special Dem-
onstration Squad, disbanded in 2008.
ASSUMED
One of them, the newspaper said, as-
sumed the identity of an eight-year-old boy
who died of leukemia in 1968 assuming
the boys hometown and even his parents
names when he infltrated an anti-capitalist
group in the 1980s. The offcer was found
out when he left his girlfriend part of the
group he was spying on and she pulled
his records in tracking him down.
The newspaper described her horror
when she realized that the person her
boyfriend was pretending to be had died
Former director of public prosecutions
Ken Macdonald said that the latest revela-
tion, coupled with past reporting about
undercover officers fathering children
with their targets, suggested a police force
gone wrong.
How are you supposed to maintain
a level of fair and objective evidence-
gathering if you are having sex with the
person you are targeting, fathering a baby
and then abandoning it, using a dead
childs identity? he said in an interview
with BBC radio.

second largest employer in
California (behind Japan)
with over $15bn invested and the UK is
the second largest market in Europe for
California exports at $4.2bn. Many FTSE
100 companies operate in California,
creating around 80,000 jobs and Califor-
nian investors in the UK account for over
100,000 jobs.
This strong relationship is the reason
that UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) con-
tinues to prioritise its resources across the
US, including California, where we have
our teams of business experts located at the
British Consulates in Los Angeles and San
Francisco. UKTI provides best-in-class ex-
port services to UK-based companies, and
we are helping more California investors
than ever on their location decisions and
their UK business operations. Key attrac-
tions of the UK to US investors can be seen
the open nature of its economy; strong in-
stitutions; world-class infrastructure; high
levels of skills and a pro-business culture. I
was able to see this frst hand while in Los
Angeles and met a number of companies
who have operation in the UK companies
like Disney, Activision, Warner Bros, Ja-
cobs, eHarmony, Allergan, Amgen, but
I also met UK companies active in Los
Angeles companies like Burberry, Ted
Baker, Find My Past, Tesco, BP.
WELCOMED
Most recently in California UKTIs
Los Angeles team co-hosted the 2013
Innovation Forum, which welcomed en-
trepreneurs and leaders from UK and US
industries to extend the UK-US special
relationship into new areas of business
collaboration. A relationship we are proud
to maintain.
Our teams in Los Ange-
les and San Francisco help
around seven California com-
panies expand their operation
to the UK each month. They
advise companies on regula-
tion, tax, legal system, help
companies find premises
and understand costs associ-
ated with expansion, support
companies with accessing fnancing options
like R&D grants and other incentives. I
know they would welcome the opportunity
to support more companies and suggest that
if you have any expansion plans or know
companies that could use some free support
please call the head of UKTI in Los Angeles

By Jill Lawless
IT WAS JUST a speeding ticket.
But a politicians need for speed, and
what he did next, now look like acts of
hubris that have destroyed a family and
a political career and may end in prison
with the whole saga played out before an
appalled and fascinated country.
Newspaper front pages and TV news
bulletins are full of the case of Chris Huh-
ne, a politician who was caught speeding in
his BMW one night in 2003. It was not his
frst offense, and any more penalty points
meant he would have lost his license. So
his wife, Vicky Pryce, told police she had
been behind the wheel.
And there it lay, a festering family
secret, for almost a decade, until a bitter
divorce sparked a chain of events that
landed both Huhne and Pryce in court, and
put their family traumas complete with
expletive-flled arguments and profane text
messages in the headlines.
Huhne, an ambitious and hard-working
Liberal Democrat, was made Energy Secre-
tary in the coalition government that came
to power in 2010. Many considered him a
future leader of his party. The same year,
he left Pryce for another woman, and after
that reports of the speeding-ticket swap
hit the news leaked, prosecutors say, by
Pryce herself as an act of revenge.
I really want to nail him, Pryce wrote
in an email to a journalist.
TRAPPED
Nail him she did, prosecutors say but
she trapped herself in the process.
After allegations of the speeding-ticket
swap were published in 2011, prosecutors
charged both Pryce and Huhne with per-
verting the course of justice, which usually
carries a sentence of between four months
and three years in jail.
Huhne, 58, protested his innocence
for months, but switched to a last-minute
guilty plea last month as his trial was due
to start, and resigned from Parliament. He
will be sentenced at a later date.
Pryce, 60, has pleaded not guilty
claiming she was coerced by her husband
and was standing trial at Londons South-
wark Crown Court. The hearings quickly
became the courtroom version of a daytime
talk show a story of powerful, successful
people with all-too human frailties.
Pryce, an Athens-born economist who
has worked as a senior advisor to both
private sector and government, claims that
during their 25-year marriage Huhne was
a domestic bully who pressured her into
lying about the speeding ticket.
PROFANITY-LADEN
Pryce, immaculately dressed and soft-
spoken in the witness box, apologized to
the jury for a series of profanity-laden
phone calls between her and Huhne that
were played in court.
I am a fery Greek, she said.
Pryce painted Huhne as a very driven,
very ambitious man with a strong, bul-
lying character.
Evidence has included recordings of the
couples expletive-laden phone calls re-
peatedly endlessly on TV and furious text
messages from the couples 18-year-old
son to his father.
We all know that you were driving and
you put pressure on Mum, said one.
Others were blunter: I dont want to
speak to you, you disgust me, (expletive)
off.
Pryce faces a retrial after the jury was
discharged after failing to reach a verdict.
The judge said some of the questions from
the jury had shown a fundamental defcit
in understanding of its role.

For UK Man
ONE VERY smelly sperm whale

British beachcomber a very happy
man.
Fifty-year-old Ken Wilman has told
British broadcasters that he had been
walking his dog along Morecambe
beach in northern England when they
discovered a soccer ball-sized piece of
ambergris, a waxy byproduct of sperm
whale digestion that has traditionally
been used to make perfumes, spices,
and medicines.
Ambergris can be pricey, and in in-
terviews broadcast last month Wilman
said that he had been offered $68,000
for the musky material.
One expert said the fnd appeared
legitimate and praised Wilmans quick
thinking.
Callum Roberts, a professor of
marine conservation at the University
of York, said, Fortune favors the

Glasgow To Host
European Cheerleading
Championships
THE EUROPEAN Cheerleading Champi-
onships will take place in June, and
Glasgow is to host this years event.
Almost 3,000 competitors from 34
countries are expected at the citys new
Emirates Arena on June 29 and 30.
With some 2,000 spectators expected
over the weekend, organisers believe the
event could generate an additional 1.3m
for the local economy.
This is the frst time the competition has
been held in the UK. The inaugural event in
2011 was held in Prague before travelling
to Amsterdam last year.

Leicester Wins Fight For
King Richards Final
Resting Place
DESPITE York council saying it would
write to the Queen and the Minister
of Justice to lay claim to the remains
of Richard II, it seems that due to the
University of Leicesters action in
exhuming the monarchs body, the
decision on the fnal resting place is in
their own hands.
In a statement the Ministry of Justice
said: When applying for an archaeo-
logical exhumation licence, the appli-
cant must state that the remains will be
laid to rest at a suitable location. The li-
cence we issued states that the applicant
(the University of Leicester) would,
no later than August 31, 2014, deposit
the remains at Jewry Wall Museum
or have them interred at St Martins
Cathedral or in a burial ground in which
interments may legally take place. The
precise location of reburial is now for
the University of Leicester.
RETURNED
But, city leaders in York claim the
Yorkist king should be returned to his
spiritual home. Kersten England,
chief executive of City of York Council
said: Richard III had as now very
strong support in the city.
The mayor of Leicester Sir Peter
Soulsby said he could understand
Yorks challenge but that the deci-
sion had already been made. He said
plans are in the early stages for the
re-interment ceremony at Leicester
Cathedral next year, which is just yards
from the social services car park where
the kings body was exhumed by a team
from the University of Leicester during
a dig last year.
Speaking at the launch of a new
exhibition chronicling the excavation
of Richard IIIs body at Leicesters
Guildhall, he said: The remains will
be re-interred at Leicester Cathedral
and were working with the cathedral
authorities to prepare for an appropriate
ceremony for that probably about 12
months from now.
UNFAIR
Many historians say that image is un-
fair, and argue Richards reputation was
smeared by his Tudor successors. Thats
an argument taken up by the Richard III
Society, set up to re-evaluate the reputation
of a reviled monarch.
It will be a whole new era for Richard
III, the societys Lynda Pidgeon said. Its
certainly going to spark a lot more interest
Hopefully people will have a more open
mind toward Richard.
Richard III ruled England between 1483
and 1485, during the decades-long tussle
over the throne known as the Wars of the
Roses. His brief reign saw liberal reforms,
including introduction of the right to bail
and the lifting of restrictions on books and
printing presses.
His rule was challenged, and he was de-
feated and killed at the Battle of Bosworth
Field by the army of Henry Tudor, who
took the throne as King Henry VII.
For centuries, the location of Richards
body has been unknown. Records say he
was buried by the Franciscan monks of
Grey Friars at their church in Leicester,
100 miles north of London. The church
was closed and dismantled after King
Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries
in 1538, and its location eventually was
forgotten.
TRAUMA
Then, last September, archaeologists
searching for Richard dug up the skeleton
of an adult male who appeared to have died
in battle. There were signs of trauma to the
skull, perhaps from a bladed instrument,
and a barbed metal arrowhead was found
between vertebrae of the upper back.
The remains also displayed signs of
scoliosis, which is a form of spinal cur-
vature, consistent with contemporary ac-
counts of Richards appearance, though not
with Shakespeares description of him as
deformd, unfnished, hunchback.
Researchers conducted a battery of sci-
entifc tests, including radiocarbon dating
to determine the skeletons age. They also
compared its DNA with samples taken
from a London cabinet-maker identifed
as a 17th great-grand-nephew of the kings
older sister.
The mayor of Leicester, Peter Soulsby,
said the monarch would be interred in the
citys cathedral.
Experts Find Remains Of King Richard III Fines Levied Against RBS In Rate-Fixing Scandal
UK Declares New Powers To Break Up Banks
BRITAINS Royal Bank of Scotland
became the third major bank to be caught
up in a global probe of interest rate ma-
nipulation last month, but what makes the
$610m fne against the lender so remark-
able is how it will be paid: by the bankers
themselves.
Because RBS is 80 percent owned by
the British government, which bailed it out
during the 2008 fnancial crisis, the bank
plans to cut 2012 bonuses and claw back
previous payouts from staffers implicated
in the fraud, their managers and some
other employees. To take money from the
corporation would, in effect, amount to
making British citizens pay for the banks
role in the scandal.
RBS joins Barclays of the UK and UBS
of Switzerland to have been found to have
rigged the London interbank offered rate,
or LIBOR. This is the rate that banks use
to lend money to each other and provides
the basis for trillions of dollars in contracts
around the world, including mortgages,
bonds and consumer loans.
SCANDALS
Britains banking industry has been
caught up in a series of scandals since the
fnancial crisis in 2008. Several executives
at another major British bank, Barclays,
were forced to step down amid the Libor
scandal.
Barclays role in fddling the rate led
to a $453m fne and the resignation of a
slew of executives, including chief execu-
tive, Bob Diamond. Swiss bank UBS was
fned $1.5bn late last year for its role in the
LIBOR-rigging scandal.
The bank said last month that fnance
director Chris Lucas and general counsel
Mark Harding will leave once successors
have been found. Barclays said that given
the mens seniority, that could take a
considerable time.
About a dozen other big banks, includ-
ing Citigroup Inc and JPMorgan Chase &
Co. in the US, are under investigation for
possible similar violations.
Thanks to the UK Financial Services Act
passed last year, all the UK fnes paid by
RBS will go to good causes: Some 35m
will be used to support Britains Armed
Forces community, with an additional 5m
going to the Imperial War Museum.
By Danica Kirka
BRITAINS treasury chief warned the
countrys banks last month that they face
being broken up if they fail to protect
their retail operations from their riskier
investment arms.
George Osborne told executives from
JPMorgan that the days of banks being
too big to fail are over in Britain, and
that taxpayers shouldnt be expected to bail
out the lenders. The next time a crisis hits,
he wants more options to act.
My message to the banks is clear: if a
bank fouts the rules, the regulator and the
Treasury will have the power to break it
up altogether full separation, not just a
ring fence, he said. Were not going to
repeat the mistakes of the past
The new measure gives regulators the
power to force a complete separation of a
lenders retail business from its investment
banking. Risky investments undermined
banks stability in 2008, leading to tax-
payer bailouts of two big UK banks.
Osbornes remarks follow recommenda-
tions from the Parliamentary Commission
on Banking Standards that proposals for a
ring-fence to protect retail banks needed
to be electrifed to discourage banks
from probing for loopholes. Osborne had
been reluctant to accept the idea, but faced
pressure stemming from public outrage
over the behavior of Britains banks.
Other countries and regulators are also
grappling with how to prevent future
bailouts. In the United States, legislation
known as the Dodd-Frank act seeks to bar
banks them from engaging in risky trading
on their own account.

Prince Charles Takes
Rare Ride On The Tube
ROYALTY means rarely having to
mind the gap.
Britains Prince Charles took a ride
on the London subway January 30 for
the frst time in a quarter century.
Charles and his wife, Camilla,
joined transit offcials and commuters
to mark the 150th anniversary of the
Underground, the worlds frst subway
system.
The subway system, which sees 3.5
million journeys a day, is well known
for announcements warning passengers
to mind the gap between the train and
the platform.
The royal couple traveled one stop,
from Farringdon to Kings Cross on
the Metropolitan Line the oldest
section of the subway system, opened
in 1863.
Charles last traveled by subway in
1986, when he and the late Princess Di-
ana took the Tube to Heathrow Airport
to open a new terminal.

ONE OF THE challenges faced by tourists

NEW!
UK Publishes Legal Opinion
On Independent Scotland
A BRITISH government report says an
independent Scotland would need to
renegotiate its relationship with interna-
tional organizations such as the European
Union.
The British government last month
published a legal opinion on what would
happen if Scotland votes for independence
in a 2014 referendum.
The 57-page report from Professors
James Crawford and Alan Boyle sets out
opinions on bodies from the European
Union to Interpol.
They found that overwhelming prec-
edent suggests Scotland will become a
new state while the remainder of the UK
will continue to hold its previous position
and would not have to renegotiate exist-
ing treaties or re-apply for membership of
international organizations.
If Scotland votes for independence it
will end more than 300 years of political
union with England.
UK Sees 10th Case Of Mysterious, SARS-Linked Virus
BRITISH officials have found the
worlds 10th known case of a new coro-
navirus, a mysterious disease related to
SARS and frst identifed last year.
The patient, a UK resident who had
been in the Middle East and Pakistan,
is in the intensive care unit of a Man-
chester hospital, according to a state-
ment last month from Britains Health
Protection Agency.
Coronaviruses are a family of viruses
that are behind ailments including the
common cold and SARS. SARS killed
800 people in a global epidemic in
2003.
In past cases, patients symptoms
have included acute breathing problems
and kidney failure.
There is no proof the virus spreads
easily between humans, but experts sus-
pect humans can catch it from animals
such as bats or camels.
All the previous cases have had links
to the Middle East, but last year, the
World Health Organization said the
virus was probably more widespread.
It recommended countries test any-
one with unexplained pneumonia for
the virus.
Authorities Charge
Man In Schools Threat
AUTHORITIES in northern Eng-
land have charged a 24 year-old man
with threatening to kill 200 people
in a Facebook posting that caused
thousands of Tennessee children to
stay home from school.
Northumbria police say Reece
Elliott, 24, from South Shields, east
of Newcastle, has been charged with
making malicious comments which
led to 2,900 children skipping class
in Warren County, Tennessee in
the US.
Police were stationed last month
at schools in McMinnville, the seat of
Warren County, 70 miles northwest
of Chattanooga.
The online posting threatening
gun violence was made anonymously
on a memorial page set up for a Ten-
nessee student who died in October.
Police did not address the motive
behind the posting.
Northumbria police said in a
statement that they were cooperating
with authorities in Warren County.

Hooleygan: Music,
Mayhem, Good Vibrations
by Terri Hooley and
Richard Sullivan
THIS MARCH 2013 in the UK and Ireland is the
flm release of Good Vibrations which is the
real life story of Terri
Hooley and his record
shop Good Vi bra-
tions which opened
in Belfast while others
were leaving or being
blown away during
the Troubles. Here
is the book by the
man who still walks
the streets of Belfast,
a town he loves so
much though it breaks his heart at times.
I had the unexpected pleasure of already
viewing the movie at the Galway Fleadh
Film Festival last summer and it is in my
Top 10 favourite movies. What a story of
music, survival, sorrow, loss, love and joy.
It rocks. After the screening there was the
nightly after-party at the Rowing Club by the
lake and Terri Hooley was the DJ with such
soulful tunes that even the women in the loo
(bathroom) line were singing along as the
tented marquee had dancing amongst the
drinkers. I wanted to meet Terri yet it was
a crowded night and I had my taxi to catch
back to my host family.
Terris book is his recollections of the life
of punks and music lovers trying to weather
a terrible co-existence. Former friends were
now divided by where they lived and drank,
by their names and culture, yet the music
was the peace amongst the broken pieces
of a beautiful city trying to fnd sanity while
waging war amongst itself. Terri is a man
who embraced a new group of voices in his
hometown the cries and anthems of the
punks. Their music support kept his store
going and he pressed their songs to bring
their songs to a wider audience.
Terri Hooley, the founder of Good Vibra-
tions records, is responsible for bands such
as The Undertones making their mark on
the national music scene in Britain. After
playing Teenage Kicks on BBC national radio
John Peel became a big supporter of Good
Vibrations records. The label celebrated its
thirty-year anniversary in April 2008. The
biopic based on the life of Terri Hooley began
flming in 2009. Hooleygan is Terris remark-
able story, from his tireless commitment to
local bands and the chequered history of his
shop and record label Good Vibrations to
his volatile encounters with the mainstream
music industry. I predict that this book will
be very popular upon the release of the
movie and you can say you read it frst in
the Union Jack.
Though I didnt meet Terri, he saw my
review of the movie and he contacted me. He
offered for me to return back in Belfast to see
the reunion of the band Mighty Shamrocks on
a barge and take his walking Belfast music
tour plus stay as a guest near the bells that
Van the Man writes about. I was on my fnal
few days of my journey in Ireland so I couldnt
make it yet it is on my list for my next visit.
If you want to know more about the book,
go buy it. Like a record, you must own your
own copy to make your own decision. Com-
merce needs participation. Go to Belfast, fnd
the latest location of Good Vibrations Record
Store and tell Terri that Lorraine sent you.
Write me back and tell me about it. Tell me
if Terri told you any of his stories about his
encounters with Bob Dylan, John Lennon
and Phil Lynott as well as Snow Patrol, Rory
Gallagher. He is a living legend of music.

REG PRESLEY, lead singer of 60s British
rock band The Troggs, has died aged 71.
The frontman died at his home in
Hampshire surrounded by his family, his
daughter Karen said.
The Troggs had a number of hit songs,
including Wild Thing and Love Is All
Around, which was covered in the 1990s
with huge success by Wet Wet Wet.
Presley had announced his retirement
from music a year ago after being taken
ill during a concert in Germany and being
diagnosed with lung cancer.
Music publicist Keith Altham said on
Facebook his dear old pal had died after
a succession of recent strokes and a losing
battle with cancer.
BBC 6 Music presenter Marc Riley
paid tribute to the great character of
Presley.
He was... so engaging and, at the same
time, having been so infuential, he was so
humble and so likeable, he said.
CANCER
In January 2012, in a letter to fans post-
ed on his bands website, Presley had said:
As you all know I was taken ill whilst
doing a gig in Germany in December.
Tony Sheridan, Early Beatles Associate, Dies
TONY SHERIDAN, a British singer who performed with the Beatles during their
early years in Hamburg, has died in Germany. He was 72.
Frank Orth, the owner of Wemo Records, a German label that issued his last
album, announced Sheridans death. He didnt have details of the cause.
Former Beatle Paul McCartney said on his website that Sheridan was a good
guy who we knew and worked with from the early days in Hamburg.
Sheridan was born in Norwich, England, on May 21, 1940. He went to Hamburg
in 1960 with a makeshift band, the Jets and during his time in the German port
city was backed by the Beatles. Sheridan and the Beatles together recorded My
Bonnie, released in 1962.
Sheridan lived near Hamburg in recent years.
During my stay in hospital tests showed
that in fact I have lung cancer.
I am receiving chemotherapy treatment
and at the moment not feeling too bad.
However Ive had to call time on The
Troggs and retire. I would like to take this
opportunity to thank you all for the cards
and calls and for your love, loyalty and
support over the years.
Presley was born in Andover, Hamp-
shire, and founded The Troggs in the
early 1960s.
The bands other hits included With
A Girl Like You and I Cant Control
Myself.
The 1967 hit Love Is All Around became
a hit song again 27 years later when a
cover version by Scottish band Wet Wet
Wet remained at number one in the UK
for 15 weeks.
The success of the Wet Wet Wet ver-
sion, which featured on the soundtrack of
the hit flm Four Weddings and a Funeral,
allowed Presley to pursue his interest in
crop circles and UFOs.
The singer published a book, Wild
Things They Dont Tell Us, about the
paranormal in 2002.

UK Retail Sales Drop
Amid Bad Weather
OFFICIAL FIGURES show retail sales
in Britain dropped more than expected in
January, stoking fears the economy might
slip into another recession.
The Offce for National Statistics said
that, in seasonally adjusted terms, the
quantity of goods purchased in the retail
sector dropped 0.6 percent from the previ-
ous month. Heavy snow is likely to have
had an impact.
Sales fell by the same rate compared
with the previous year, the first such
year-on-year drop recorded since August
2011.
The fgures were worse than economists
had expected.
The estimates show a decline in goods
bought in small stores but an increase for
large stores. The decline was particularly
steep in stores with nine or fewer em-
ployees.
Food sales dropped 2.6 percent com-
pared with a year earlier, in terms of
volume.
Movie And TV Actor Richard Briers Dies
RICHARD BRIERS, 79, an avuncular
comic presence as an actor on TV and
movie screens for decades, has died.
Briers agent, Christopher Farrar, said
that the actor died at his London home.
A former heavy smoker, he had suffered
from emphysema.
Briers starred in the 1970s sitcom The
Good Life as Tom Good, a man who de-
cides to quit the urban rat race for a life of
self-suffciency in suburbia.
The show, which contrasted the back-
to-the land Goods with their conventional
neighbors the Leadbetters, made stars of
its core cast Briers, Felicity Kendal, Pe-
nelope Keith and Paul Eddington and is
regularly voted one of the greatest British
sitcoms of all time. Broadcast in Britain
between 1975 and 1978, it aired in the U.S.
as Good Neighbors.
Briars also starred in the comedy-drama
Ever-Decreasing Circles, the Scottish
Highlands drama Monarch of the Glen and
a host of other shows.
In later life he became well-known for
Shakespearean roles. He joined director
Kenneth Branaghs Renaissance Theatre
Company in 1987 after deciding, he said,
that I had gone as far as I could doing
sitcoms.
For Branagh he took on roles includ-
ing King Lear, Malvolio in Twelfth Night
and the buffoon Bottom in A Midsummer
Nights Dream.
He also appeared in several Branagh-
directed films, including Henry V, A
Midsummer Nights Dream, Hamlet,
Peters Friends and Mary Shelleys
Frankenstein.
Branagh remembered Briers as a
national treasure, a great actor and a won-
derful man. He was greatly loved and he
will be deeply missed.
Briers also was the voice of rabbit Fiver
in the much-loved animated animal feature
Watership Down, and narrator 1970s chil-
drens cartoon Roobarb.
On stage, he was associated with the
work of British comic playwright Alan
Ayckbourn, playing leading roles in Rela-
tively Speaking, Absurd Person Singular
and Absent Friends.
Born January 14, 1934, Briers trained
at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art
in London and worked consistently in
theater, flm and television for more than
half a century.
His latest flm credit is in the recently
released Cockneys Vs Zombies.
He said he had no desire to retire, but
complained in one of his fnal interviews
that the chronic lung disease emphysema
was slowing him down.
The ciggies got me. I stopped 10 years
ago, but too late, he told the Daily Mail
newspaper last month.
Its totally my fault. So, I get very
breathless, which is a pain in the back-
side.
In 1989, Briers was named an Offcer
of the Order of the British Empire by the
Queen for services to the arts.
Among his peers and fans, Briers was
much appreciated for his humor and self-
deprecating wit. He said of one run in the
title role of Hamlet: I may not have been
the best Hamlet of my generation but I was
certainly the fastest.
On the opening night I took 24 minutes
off the running time, and I think it must
have been the only Hamlet in recent
times where people were able to get out to
the pub afterwards for a drink, he said.
Briers married the actress Anne Davies
in 1956. They had two daughters.

If your recipes are to be
favoured . prepare food that is
meant to be savoured!
THERE SEEMS to so much coming up in
Blighty for March, 1 St Davids Day, 18th
Mothering Sunday, St Patricks and early
this year, 31st Easter. Since St Pats usually
gets more attention I thought I would honour
the Welsh this year.
As a teenager I was able to visit several
of the castles in Wales, of which there are
many, and more recently a day in Anglesey
(before William and Kate!) a charming
and pretty area. Of course not to be outdone
also, there is magnifcent Snowdonia, and
many many castles. The Welsh food is also
great, lots of seafood of course, lovely dairy
products, and super lamb. On my recent
visit last year, my dear friend Margaret
roasted a fabulous leg of lamb from Wales
that was so succulent and tender. Although
the Welsh symbols are the daffodil and the
leek, Im not going to use that this time.
Welsh rarebit can be as simple as just
slicing cheese on toast and grilling it, but
it is also delicious made with a sauce. Any
cheese can be used, the most well-known
Welsh one is Caerphilly, but not easy to
obtain here. Others can be Lancashire,
Double Gloucester, but my favourite is
always a sharp cheddar.
No one really knows how the name came
about, but one of the frst English cook book
writers, Hanna Glasse, in 1747 featured it
in her book Art of Cookery. It was called
Rabbit, but rabbit meat was not used; a
saying I came across from a Mr Francis
Grose in 1785, referred to it as A Welch
rabbit, bread and cheese toasted, ie a
Welch rare bit That seems to be a feasible
answer to the origin of the name. However
to confuse it even more, Hannah also re-
ferred to Scotch Rabbit. toast a piece
of bread very nicely on both sides, butter
it, cut a slice of cheese about as big as the
bread, toast it on both sides, and lay it on
the bread and English Rabbit toast a
slice of bread brown on both sides, then lay
it in a place before the fre, pour a glass of
red wine over it, and let it soak the wine up;
then cut some cheese very thin, and lay it
very thick over the bread, and put it in a tin
oven before the fre, and it will be toasted
and brownd presently, serve it away hot
. Both recipes were in 1747, and sounds
as if it was a messy business!
Any road, here is my version; when we
did catering I often made the sauce and
served it in a small crock pot, or fondue
pot with toasted triangles to dip in the
sauce, it was very popular. You do need to
use a strong toasting texture bread, if it is
too thin it wont hold up. I hope you enjoy
my version.
Welsh Rarebit
4 Tbsp butter
1/4 cup four
1 1/2 tsp dry English mustard
(Colemans)
salt and pepper
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup beer
1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 cups grated cheddar cheese
Tomato slices (optional)
Toast
Melt butter over medium heat, stir in four
and mustard and mix into a ball, gradu-
ally add the milk stirring constantly until
smooth. Add the beer and Worcestershire
sauce. (Dont make it too thin) Stir in the
cheese and mix until smooth and melted.
Top each toast slice with 2-3-Tbsp sauce,
top with tomato (optional) and grill until
the sauce is bubbling and lightly browned.
(I received inquiries about the lavender
used in my Lavender Pound Cake I featured
last month. I did recommend that you try
the natural food stores, or gourmet type
food stores. Be sure not to use commer-
cial types used for Potpourri etc in other
stores, as they may have been treated with
preservatives etc.
hospital meals in Northern Ireland.
Tests are continuing, and offcials say
this is far from over.
The more people have looked for
horsemeat, the more products have been
found containing it, said Duncan Camp-
bell, a senior British food inspector. I
dont think we have got to the bottom
of it yet.
o HOW DID THE HORSEMEAT GET
THERE?
European offcials say the scandal is the
result of fraud, and possibly an interna-
tional criminal conspiracy to pass off cheap
horsemeat as more expensive beef.
The French government says the chain
of fraudulent meat sales reaches across 28
frms in 13 countries.
At least some of the horsemeat origi-
nated at abattoirs in Romania, and was
sent through a Cyprus-registered trader to
a warehouse in the Netherlands. A French
meat wholesaler, Spanghero, bought the
meat from the trader, then resold it to the
French frozen food processor Comigel.
The resulting food was marketed in Britain
and other countries under the Sweden-
based Findus label as lasagna and other
products containing ground beef.
French authorities blame Spanghero for
the fraud, but it strongly denies wrongdo-
ing.
The responsibility started upstream,
chief executive Barthelemy Aguerre said.
We didnt want to cheat anyone.
The Romanian companies and the
Dutch trader also deny fraud. They say
the meat was clearly labeled as horse when
they handled it.
Dutch prosecutors said that food safety
experts raided a meat processing plant as
part of a criminal investigation into horse-
meat fraud. Prosecutors said the company
in North Brabant province is suspected of
fraud and money laundering. The com-
pany which was not named, in line with
Dutch privacy laws is believed to have
processed horsemeat from the Netherlands
and Ireland, and mixed it with beef before
selling the mixture as pure beef.
Separately, British authorities have
raided five businesses including an
English slaughterhouse and a Welsh meat
processor on suspicion of passing off
horsemeat as beef in burgers and kebabs.
Three men have been arrested.
o IS IT DANGEROUS?
Horsemeat itself is not harmful, and
is eaten in several European countries,
including France, Germany and Italy.
In English-speaking countries including
Britain and Ireland eating horses is widely
considered taboo.
British offcials have said that horses
slaughtered in Britain after being treated
with the equine painkiller phenylbutazone,
or bute, may have made their way into
the human food chain in France. Bute is
banned for human use because in rare cases
it causes severe side effects, but veterinary
experts say there is little risk from consum-
ing small amounts in horsemeat.
o ARE AUTHORITES ON TOP OF
THE PROBLEM?
Europol, the European Union police
agency, is coordinating a continent-wide
fraud investigation, and at an emergency
meeting the EU approved a plan to conduct
random DNA tests to check for horse-
meat, and also to check for the presence
of bute.

Lasagna Products Test
Positive For Horsemeat
UK AUTHORITIES say beef lasagna prod-
ucts recalled from British supermarkets
by frozen-food company Findus have
tested positive for more than 60 percent
horsemeat.
The UK Food Standards Agency said
that its tests on Finduss beef lasagna
were part of an ongoing investigation
into mislabeled meat and that there is
no evidence the results pose a food
safety risk.
Tesco Drops Supplier
Over Horsemeat
BRITAINS biggest supermarket chain
says it is dropping a frm that supplied
it with beef burgers contaminated with
horsemeat.
Tesco says burgers from Ireland-
based Silvercrest contained meat from
an unauthorized supplier that came from
outside the UK and Ireland, in violation of
the grocers policy.
Tesco called the issue a breach of trust
and said in a statement last month it would
no longer buy products from Silvercrest
The crisis has raised questions about
food controls in the 27-nation European
Union and highlighted how little con-
sumers know about the complex trading
operations that get food from producers
to wholesalers to processers to stores and
onto dinner tables.
Critics say the food supply chain is
too complicated and lightly policed to be
truly secure.
But the European Unions health com-
missioner, Tonio Borg, said French au-
thorities identifcation and suspension of
Spanghero demonstrated that traceability
of food in the EU works.
Consumers must be assured that
everything will be done at the EU level
to restore, as soon as possible, their con-
fdence in the products on our markets,
Borg said.

Police Arrest Six People
In Phone Hacking Probe
POLICE investigating computer hacking
and privacy offenses by the media last
month arrested six people alleged to be
involved in intercepting voice mails for the
defunct News of the World tabloid.
Authorities said the six former journal-
ists for the tabloid were arrested in a new
line of inquiry to the ongoing investigation
in Operation Weeting, which is one of three
investigations into press wrongdoing.
Britains power structure has been
rattled by allegations that the now-closed
News of the World hacked peoples phones
for stories. The allegations and scandal
have touched off dozens of arrests. Po-
lice say the new suspected conspiracy is
believed to have taken place primarily
during 2005-2006.

Britain Pledges 3m For Somalias New Government
THE GOVERNMENT says it will give
3m in new aid to Somalia to help the
war-ravaged nations institutions and its
malnourished mothers and children.
The announcement came as Somalias
president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, was
in London last month for a meeting with
Prime Minister David Cameron.
Britains International Development
Secretary Justine Greening announced the
new aid pledge, saying the UK will help
train Somali lawmakers and will provide
parliamentary and constitutional advice.
Half of the money will go to the World
Food Program to help 59,300 malnour-
ished children and mothers in Somalia,
BUSINESS leaders in Manchester, NH,
last month hosted a delegation of busi-
ness leaders from Manchester, England,
for several days.
The visit was the result of a three-year
-long effort to establish a sister-city rela-
tionship with the overseas city.
The local Manchester Chamber of Com-
merce formally welcomed the delegates for
the three-day visit. The delegation, which
was formed as a partnership between the
British Consulate UK Trade and Invest-
ment Division and the local chamber, rep-
resented such felds as compliance control
and management, science and technology,
publishing, and trade and investment.

Super-League Uncertainty, Proteus
Remain Force To Reckon With
The scheduled Pakistan T20 Super-
League due to start March 26, has been
delayed due to complications with the play-
ers association FICA who are concerned
with safety issues and called the series
unmanageable. Pakistan has not hosted a
home series since terrorists attacked the Sri
Lanka team bus in Lahore, 2009. Australia
and South Africa has banned their players
for participating, and English Counties are
reluctant to release their best talent, so close
to the beginning of the new cricket season.
The Super-League will run for 12 days, and
offers salaries of around $100,000. Pakistan
says eighty players have already signed up
to play.
Pakistan are presently touring South Afri-

three strokes clear of Sterne.
Tennis & Boxing
Britains Federation Cup team of Laura
Robson, Heather Watson, Anne Keothavong
and Johanna Konta, skippered by Judy Mur-
ray, beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 3-0, Hungary
2-1, and Portugal 2-1, and then Bulgaria
in the fnal match in the Euro/Africa Group
one play-offs in Eilat, Israel. They will face
Argentina in Argentina, in the Euro/Africa
Group two play-offs, April 20-21.
Carl Frampton brought his unbeaten
record to 16-0, after claiming the European
super-bantamweight crown off Kiko Martinez
(27-4) in Belfast, February 9. The northern
Irishman stopped the Spaniard in the ninth
round. Martinez had previously cancelled on
twice after a series of contractual disputes,
so Framptons corner saw it as justice truly
done.
People Deserving A Mention
Short-track speed skater Elise Christie
won the 1500m to claim the gold medal in
the European Championship in Sweden
Shelley Rudman is the new world womens
skeleton champion, after taking the gold
medal at the World Skeleton Championships
in St Moritz, Switzerland, the last

the 2008 winter Olympics
Cyclist Mark Cavendish, won
the fnal four stages of the Tour
of Qatar, February 3-8, to claim
victory for his new Belgium
based team, Omega Pharma-QuickStop.
Cavendish who has won 23 career Tour de
France stages, ended his relationship with
Team Sky in October 2012. Former team
member Chris Froome, who was runner-up
at last years Tour de France, won the Tour
of Oman. He beat out Alberto Contador and
Cadel Evans for his frst major win on the
road racing circuit.
England Beat Brazil
The Football Association celebrated its
150
th
anniversary with an 87,000 plus crowd
at Wembley, February 6, where England
beat Brazil for the frst time in 23 years with
a 2-1 scoreline. A solicitor by the name of
Ebenezer Morley, gathered a group of soc-
cer enthusiasts together at the Freemasons
Tavern in London, 1863, to codify and set
down regulations for the increasing popularity
of football. Eight years later the FA Cup was
inaugurated, and in 1888, the football league
came in to existence. The guest of honour
for the centenary and a half observation was
supposed to be Pele, but he was unable to
attend due to a recent hip surgery. A thor-
oughly watchable contest enveloped with
Ashley Cole claiming his 100
th
England cap.
Ronaldinho failed to put a penalty away in the
19
th
minute as Joe Hart made a magnifcent
save. Wayne Rooney put England ahead in
the 27
th
minute (his 33
rd
goal for England),
then three minutes after the break, Guedes
Fred made it 1-1. Frank Lampard blasted in
the winner on the one hour mark.
The same day, a bunch of international
friendlies took place world-wide. New coach
Gordon Strachan, claimed victory in his frst
match in charge of Scotland, as Charlie Mul-
grew scored his frst international goal in the
39
th
minute at Pittodrie, where the Scots came
through 1-0 winners against Estonia. Wales
were in Swansea, and over-came Austria
2-1. Gareth Bale opened the scoring in the
21
st
minute, while Sam Vokes made it two,
seven minutes the other side of the break.
Janko got one back for the Austrians ffteen
minutes from the final whistle. Northern
Ireland visited Malta where a goalless draw
ensued. Other results, saw France beaten
at home 2-1 by Germany, while Argentina
prevailed 3-2 over Sweden at Solna. World
champions Spain, beat Uruguay 3-1.
United States Foiled, Nigeria
Are African Champions
In the frst games of the CONCACAF World
Cup 2014 fnal qualifying round, February 6,
Jurgen Klinsmann left former skipper Carlos
Bocanegra, on the bench for the Honduras
game at San Pedro Sula, while Landon
Donovan was absent, still contemplating if
his soccer career will continue. Played in the
fery mid-day heat, Tottenham striker Clint
Dempsey, got the US on the scoreboard
in the 36
th
minute, while a stunning bicycle
kick by Juan Carlos Garcia four minutes
later had the teams level. Jerry Bengtson
of the New England Revolution netted in
the 79
th
minute to give the Hondurans a 2-1
win. The government turned the match-day
in to a national holiday, so everyone could
see the game. Mexicos streak of 19 winning
games at the Azteca Stadium came to an
end, after Jamaica dug themselves frmly in
to claim a well-earned point after 0-0 result.
Costa Rica visited Panama where the game
ended 2-2.
Nigeria won the African Cup of Nations,
January 19-February 10, in front of a 85,000
strong crowd at Johannesburg, where a
Sunday Mba netting in the 40
th
minutes was
enough to give the super-eagles the trophy for
the third time with a 1-0 result over Burkina
Faso. Reigning champions Zambia, failed to
get out of the group stage. CAF had moved
the tournament to the odd years (2013),
after complaints over conficting schedules
and fxture congestion associated with the
World Cup, which is always scheduled on
even years.
European Soccer
The fnal sixteen teams left in the Cham-
pions League began the knockout phase
frst leg, February 12-13. Two spectacular
headers by Danny Welbeck (20
th
minute)
and Ronaldo (30
th
) witnessed Real Madrid
and Manchester United tie one all at the
Bernabeu. Celtic ran themselves ragged
against Juventus at Parkhead, but could not
get the ball in the net. The Italians won 3-0,
after an early three minute goal by Alessando
Maltri. Late goals by Claudio Marchiso and
Mirko Vucinic sealed the Hoops fate. David
Beckham travelled to Spain, where Paris St
Germain faced Valencia, but he was not in
the squad and watched from the sidelines
as the match ended 2-1 in the French sides
favour. Lucas Podolski netted at the Emir-
ates for Arsenal in the 54
th
minute, but the
Gunners were already 2-0 down against
Bayern Munich. The Germans penetrated the
Londoners defence again, fourteen minutes
from time, to record a 3-1 win. second legs
scheduled March 2-3.
Late Goals By Chelsea & Spurs
Do The Trick, Magpies Win Away,
Liverpool Out
The Europa Leagues last thirty two,
knockout stage February 14 and 21, saw
Chelsea win 1-0 at Sparta Prague, after Os-
car came on as substitute and hit the Czech
net eight minutes from time. At Stamford
Bridge, an Eden Hazard goal in the fnal
minute gave the Blues a 1-1 tie and entrance
to the last sixteen.
Tottenham won 2-1 at White Hart Lane
courtesy of a double by Gareth Bale (45
th
& 90 minutes), against French side Lyon.
In the second leg, a last minute effort by
Mousa Dembele was enough to get Spurs
through to the next round, where an unyield-
ing Lyon had taken the lead in the 17
th
minute.
Result 1-1.
Newcastle claimed a goal-less draw at St
James Park against Metalist Kharkiv, Shola
Ameobi put a penalty away in the 64
th
minute
during the Belarus leg, that saw the Magpies
progress with a 1-0 victory
Disappointment for Liverpool, who lost
2-0 at Zenit St Petersburg, yet won 3-1 at
Anfeld. The Russians went ahead in the 19
th
minute, Luis Suarez hit a double in the 28
th
&
59
th
minute and Joe Allen found the net two
minutes before half-time. It was not good
enough however, and Zenit goes through on
the away goals rule.
Last years winners Atletico Madrid,
went out to Rubin Kazan, even though the
Spaniards won in Russia 1-0.
FA Cup
The ffth round of the FA Cup, February
15-16-17, saw Championships Blackburn
Rovers oust Arsenal at the Emirates where
a Colin Kazim-Richards goal in the 72
nd
minute saw all the pressure that gunners
could mount prove fruitless. The last surviv-
ing non-league club Luton Town, fell at home
3-0 to Millwall, while Barnsley overcame
MK Dons away from home 3-1. Manchester
City took Leeds apart 4-0, and Wigan who
travelled to Huddersfeld conquered 4-1.
Oldhams goalkeeper moved in to the penalty
area of Everton as a last gasp corner proved
successful resulting in a 2-2 tie. Manchester
United progressed with a 2-1 win at Old Traf-
ford against Reading.
Scottish Soccer
The ffth round of the William Hill Scottish
Cup, February 2-3, saw Celtic ease through
to the quarter-fnals, while cross city rivals
Rangers, tumbled out 3-0 at Dundee Utd.
Celtic won 3-0 at Raith Rovers, with goals
from Kris Commons (56
th
minute) James
Forrest (83
rd)
followed by Charlie Mulgrew
finding the net four minutes from time.
Johnny Russell hit a double for Dundee Utd
in the 11
th
& 79
th
minutes while Jon Daly got
one in between, scoring nine minutes before
the break. Rangers frustration boiled over in
the fnal three minutes with both Ian Black
and Kal Naismith getting their marching
orders. Hibernians Gary Deegans netting in
the 49
th
minute gave them a 1-0 victory over
Aberdeen, where the Dons Scott Vernon
missed a penalty seven minutes from time.
Dundee slammed Greenock Morton 5-1 at
home, which witnessed fve different names
on the scorecard. An Esmael Goncalves
double gave St Mirren a 2-0 win over St
Johnstone, while Dunfermline were beaten
2-0 at home by Hamilton Academicals.
Lyle Taylor got two for Falkirk, as the bairns
took advantage of a home tie against Forfar
Athletic to win 4-1.
Wembley Glory For Swansea
After knocking out premier league sides,
Arsenal, Aston Villa and Wigan, Bradford
Citys English League Cup dreams lay in
tatters, February 24, where Swansea Town
won the frst major trophy in their history
with a convincing 5-0 win over the second
division side. An 82,000 plus crowd flled
Wembley Stadium, where Nathan Dyer put
the Swans ahead in the 16
th
minute. Miquel
Michu would get one fve minute before the
break, and two minutes after they returned
for the second half, Dyer hit his second.
Bradfords goalkeeper Matt Duke was sent
off in the 55
th
minute after bringing Jonathan
de Guzman down in the box. De Guzman put
the penalty away and it was downhill for the
bantams from that point. De Guzman scored
again in the closing seconds.
Veteran American Ends David
Prices Unbeaten Run
Britains unbeaten heavyweight champion,
David Price (15-1) ended up on the canvas in
the second round after Tony Thompson, a 41-
year-old American with an impressive career
statistic of now 37-3, caught the six foot eight
Liverpudlian squarely in the face. The non-title
fght at Liverpool, February 23, brought out
Price supporters en masse who were momen-
tarily silenced by the British champions quick
demise. Thompson lost to Wladimir Klitscho
in his last outing, so Price, the British Olympic
bronze medalist at the Beijing games, was
certainly facing quality.
Audley Harrison, who was knocked out
in 82 seconds in his last fght by David Price,
won the heavyweight prizefghter tournament
at Bethnal Green, the same weekend. Harri-
son (31-6) who won an Olympic gold medal
at Sydney in 2000, and was later a European
champion, has never quite attained the poten-
tial that was predicted. He beat three people
in a night of boxing, starting off with Claus
Bertino of Denmark, Irishman Martin Rogan,
and in the fnal, the challenge of American,
Derric Rossy, ended in the second round.
Late Cycling, Cricket & Mo Farah
The World Track Cycling Championships
at Minsk, February 20-24, saw a number of
British riders attain the Gold. The womens
pursuit team of Laura Trott, Dani King and
Elinor Barker beat out the Australians in the
fnal, while Jason Kenny took gold in the
keirin and Simon Yates triumphed in the 40k
points race. Becky James scored double gold
in the sprint fnal and the keirin, while getting
a bronze in the 500m time trial with Vicky
Williamson. The mens team pursuit quartet
of Ed Clancy, Steven Burke ,Andy Tennant
and Sam Harrison took silver, while Laura
Trott, added a silver to her gold with a second
place in the Omnium.
England beat New Zealand in the third and
fnal ODI at Auckland, winning by fve wickets
and the series 2-1. New Zealand 185 all out.
England 186-5 at close South Africa won
their third and fnal Test against Pakistan by
an innings and 18 runs to win the series 3-0.
South Africa 409 (AB de Villiers 121). Paki-
stan 156 and 235 British Olympic 5,000m
and 10,000m champion, Mo Farah, won the
New Orleans half-marathon, February 24.

DWAIN CHAMBERS has been selected in Brit-
ains squad for this months European Indoor
Championship, giving the sprinter a chance
to improve on the silver medal he won in the
60 meters at the 2011 competition.
Jenny Meadows, the defending 800 cham-
pion, will captain the squad of 29 despite
only making her return last month from a
17-month injury absence.
Mo Farah and Helen Clitheroe will not de-
fend their 3,000 titles as they are focusing on
their preparations for the outdoor season.
The 34-year-old Chambers was included
despite missing trials and failing to reach the
fnal of the Birmingham Grand Prix.
The European Indoor Championship will be
staged in Gothenburg, Sweden, from March
1-3. Britain won eight medals in Paris two
years ago.

British Basketball
Earns Olympic
Funding Reprieve
THE PLEA from Chicago Bulls forward Luol
Deng to British Prime Minister David Cameron
has worked: Funding will be restored to the
countrys Olympic basketball program.
Britains mens and womens basketball
squads were told in December theyd receive
no funding for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olym-
pics. UK Sport distributes the money and last
month said basketball will receive funding
expected to total several million dollars.
Basketball received $13.6m in the four
years before the 2012 London Olympics,
where Britain qualifed as the host nation.
Deng had been among many critics of
the governments plan to scrap the funding.
He sent a letter to Cameron asking for it to
be restored.
Arsenal: Santi Corzola opened
the scoring in the sixth minute and
struck a late winner that saved the
struggling Gunners a 2-1 home de-
feat of Aston Villa. A Corzola goal 10 minutes
before halftime and some staunch defending
while down to 10 men forged a 1-0 triumph
at Sunderland. Carl Jenkinson, handed a start
after Laurent Koscielny injured himself in
the pre-match warmup, went off in the 62nd
minute with a second bookable offense but
his teammates held out. A defected Lukas
Podolski free kick snuck into the net for a 1-0
defeat of Stoke City.
Aston Villa: Andreas Wiemann
equalized midway through the sec-
ond half at Arsenal but a goal con-
ceded with five minutes left sent
Villa down to a 2-1 loss. Christian Bentekes
penalty kick and Charles NZogbias free kick
carried Villa past West Ham United, 2-1. Villa
blew a two-goal lead at Everton and settled
for a 3-3 tie. Benteke scored in the second
minute, Gabriel Agbonlahor restored the
advantage and another goal by Benteke in
the 61
st
minute wasnt enough for a badly
needed win.
Chelsea: A saved penalty kick
denied Frank Lampard his 200
th
goal for the club as Chelsea lost,
2-0, at Manchester City. Lam-
pards run of 10 straight successful spot
kicks ended early in the second half with the
game scoreless. He was substituted in the
68
th
minute and John Terry watched from the
bench. Eden Hazard scored the winner in a
4-1 defeat of Wigan that ended a four-match
winless streak. Ramires staked a 1-0 lead
midway through the second half and after
Hazards goal, Lampard and Marko Marin
got on the board late.
Everton: Leon Osmans header
in the 39
th
minute at Norwich
stood up until the 84
th
minute,
after which Everton conceded
twice to lose, 2-1. Maroune Felliani erased
a 3-1 defcit with goals in the 69
th
and 93
rd
minutes of a 3-3 draw with Aston Villa. Victor
Anichebes equalizer in the frst half helped
the cause as Everton increased their point
take from losing positions to 21, second only
to Manchester United.
Fulham: A crisp volley by Dimi-
tar Berbatov, his ninth goal of the
season, provided the Cottagers
a 1-0 defeat of Stoke City. Mark
Schwarzer preserved the victory, only Ful-
hams second in the league since New Years
Day, by stopping a poorly struck penalty kick.
The Cottagers managed only one shot on goal
but came home from Norwich with a point
via a 0-0 draw.
Liverpool: Manager Brendan
Rodgers former team got no
favors as the Reds bludgeoned
Swansea City, 5-0, at Anfeld.
Penalty kicks by Steven Gerrard
and Daniel Sturridge opened and closed the
scoring; in between, Philippe Coutinho, Jose
Enrique and Luis Suarez tallied with the frst
10 minutes of the second half. Gerrards 77
th
minute penalty was saved with the score, 0-0,
and Liverpool quickly conceded twice to fall at
home to West Bromwich Albion, 2-0.
Manchester City: Yaya Toure
and Carlos Tevez scored after a
Joe Hart penalty save to down
Chelsea, 2-0. Hart stopped Frank
Lampard seven minutes into the second half
and the victory moved City seven points
clear in the race for second place. David
Silva pulled the back for Toure to beat two
challenges and shoot low inside the far post,
and Tevez iced the win by blasting into the
top corner from the edge of the penalty arc.
A shot fumbled by Joe Hart and a Gareth
Barry own goal helped Southampton beat
City, 3-1, despite a goal by Edin Dzeko late
in the frst half.
Manchester United: Rafael
scored in the frst half and Ryan
Giggs added a clinching goal
in his 999
th
appearance for
the club as United won, 2-0, at Queens
Park Rangers. Minutes after scoring, Rafael
cleared a shot off the goal line to maintain
the advantage. Giggs and Robin Van Persie
were the scorers in a 2-0 home victory over
Everton.
Newcastle: After conceding
at home to Southampton in the
third minute, Newcastle fought
back to win going away, 4-2, for their third
victory in the last four games. Moussa Sis-
soko and Papiss Demba Cisse scored nine
minutes apart to stake a 2-1 halftime lead,
and after an equalizer, Yohan Cabaye stroked
home the winner with a penalty kick. The win
brought some payback for manager Alan
Pardew, dismissed by the Saints in August,
2010. Sissoko scored the goals that wiped
out a 2-1 defcit as the Magpies rallied to beat
Chelsea, 2-1. Jonas Gutierrez had opened the
scoring, Sissoko equalized midway through
the second half and exchanged passes with
Davide Santon to slot the winner.
Norwich City: Kei Kamara, on
loan from Sporting Kansas City
of Major League Soccer, came
on as a sub to equalize in the 84
th

minute and Grant Holt struck the winner in
stoppage-time to earn the Canaries a 2-1
defeat of Everton. Kamara nailed in a Robert
Snodgrass cross with a powerful header and
Holt converted a Sebastien Bassong fick in
the fourth minute of added time.
Queens Park Rangers:
Christopher Sambas header
cleared off the goal line was the
closest QPR came to scoring in
a 2-0 home loss to Manchester United. A goal
by Bobby Zamora early in the second half at
Swansea City was followed by QPR conced-
ing two minutes later on their way to a 4-1
loss. Adel Taarabt ruined an otherwise good
performance by failing to convert a penalty
kick in a 0-0 home draw with Norwich.
Reading: Royals fans booed
their team off the feld at halftime
after two late goals conceded left
them 2-0 down; a third goal and a
red card to Pavel Pogrebynak sent them home
enraged at a 3-0 defeat. Jimmy Kebe scored
early and late goals in a 2-1 home defeat of
Sunderland. Jobi McAnuff cut the ball back
for Kebe to score in the seventh minute and
with fve minutes remaining Kebe got to the
back post to meet an Ian Harte free kick and
bang in the winner.
Southampton: Despite Mor-
gan Schneiderlins third-minute
strike and a Rickie Lambert
equalizer early in the second half,
the Saints were outclassed at Newcastle
United in a 4-2 loss. Mauricio Pochettino
got his frst win as Saints manager with a
3-1 triumph over Manchester City in which
Jason Puncheon and Steven Davis scored in
the frst 22 minutes and an own goal clinched
the three points.
Stoke City: American midfelder Brek Shea
made his debut as a 24
th
-minute substitute
in a 1-0 loss at Fulham. Shea, who
replaced an injured Gary Ethering-
ton, delivered a cross that resulted
in a handball, but Jonathan Walters
couldnt convert the ensuing penalty kick.
Robert Huths frst goal of the season and a
superb Cameron Jerome effort 14 minutes
later secured a 2-1 victory over Reading.
Sunderland: Stephane Ses-
segnon scored in the 79
th
minute with the Black Cats
2-0 down at West Bromwich
Albion, and they got no closer. An earlier shot
by Steven Fletcher came back off the post
with the score 0-0. Craig Gardner converted
a penalty kick called by the assistant referee
to pull the Black Cats into a 1-1 tie at Reading
but they conceded a goal with fve minutes
remaining and were beaten, 2-1.
Swansea: Despite dominating
possession the Swans fell to the
more physical long-ball game of
West Ham, and an Andy Carroll
goal, 1-0. Michu continued his scoring spree
in netting two in a 4-1 drubbing of relegation
candidates QPR. With an obvious one eye
on the League Cup final, a controversial
weakened team took a terrible 5-0 thumping
at Anfeld, never looking in the game.
Tottenham Hotspur: Gareth Bale
was the Premier League Player
of the Month for February, hands
down. He drove a dramatic winner
inside the far post to complete a
3-2 comeback victory at West Ham. Hed
opened the scoring in the 13
th
minute, and 13
minutes after Gylf Sigurdsson had equalized,
fred home from about 25 yards out with a
minute left in regulation. Two brilliant mo-
ments from Bale, now playing centrally much
of the time, swept Spurs past Newcastle, 2-1.
He scored in the ffth minute with a superb
free kick and broke away to net the winning
goal with 12 minutes to play. A great strike
from Bale, who had cushioned a pass from
Kyle Walker, midway through the second half
was enough for Spurs to win 1-0 at West
Bromwich Albion.
West Bromwich Albion: Romelu
Lukaku, on loan from Chelsea,
upped his Premier League tally to
12 goals by converting a penalty
kick and nailing the winning goal in a 2-1
defeat of Sunderland. Keeper Ben Foster
saved seven shots, including a penalty kick,
and Lukaku tacked on a late goal after Gareth
MacAuleys winner as the Baggies upended
Liverpool, 2-0, at Anfeld for their frst league
win since Boxing Day.
West Ham United: Andy Car-
roll smashed home a penalty kick
and Joe Cole scuffed home a shot
to give the Hammers a 2-1 lead
in the derby with Spurs, but couldnt contain
the visitors in the fnal quarter of an hour and
lost, 3-2. In his frst start since November,
Carroll scored in the 77
th
minute to give the
Hammers just their second win of 2013, a
1-0 defeat of Swansea City. Carroll got his
head to a Mark Noble corner kick to net his
second goal of the season.
Wigan Athletic: Arouna Kone
scored twice late in the frst half
and Maynor Figueroa struck
early in the second as the Latics
romped, 3-0, at Reading. Figueroas goal-
bound shot bounced off Kone to open the
scoring, and Kone scored again by running
onto a Jean Beausejour through ball. Shaun
Maloneys goal in the 90
th
minute rescued
a 2-2 draw with Southampton. The Latics
squandered a 1-0 lead provided when Gary
Caldwell headed home in the 25
th
minute
but Maloney pounced when Paul Scharner
got his head to a corner kick to prod the ball
over the line.

FORMER England hooker Lee
Mears was forced to retire last
month after becoming the latest
British rugby player to be diag-
nosed with heart problems.
Doctors detected an ab-
normality on Mears cardiac
screening program and advised
the front-row forward to retire
because there was a signifcant
potential risk of developing
further complications by play-
ing on, club side Bath said in a
statement.
This is not how I saw it
ending, said the 33-year-old
Mears, who played 42 matches
for England and also toured
South Africa with the British
and Irish Lions in 2009. This
will be a tough period, but the
memories I have and the friends
I have made over the years will
be of huge support.
Since 2006, Ireland prop
Simon Best, and Wales front-
rowers Rhys Thomas and Lloyd
Burns have all retired as a result
of heart problems. Another
Ireland prop, Marcus Horan,
was able to continue playing
despite undergoing minor heart
surgery in 2009.
Mears, who played 16 years
for Bath, won his last cap for
England in last years sum-
mer tour of South Africa, after
which he announced his inter-
national retirement. He played
at the 2007 and 2011 World
Cups and was known for his
dynamic play in the loose.
Lee is a legend, pure and
simple, Bath head coach Gary
Gold said. The only thing that
matters is to be healthy and if
that means he stops playing, then
thats the way it has to be.

about the likely outcome. Star of the show
was Owen Farrell whose kicking was
impeccable. It looks as though England
have found a successor at long last to
Jonny Wilkinson except that this young man
looks even better. Outside him look out for
a glittering career for Billy Twelvetrees who
started with a try on dbut.
The French were rocked to the core by
the Italians. Everybody expected an away
win but France showed a total lack of inven-
tion and simply buckled under the strength
of the Italian pack.
Week Two: England Setting
The Pace
Scotland 34 Italy 10

Ireland 6 England 12
SCOTLAND suddenly found their form at
home against the Italians who had been
confdently anticipating a second consecu-
tive victory for the frst time in the Six Na-
tions. Instead it was the Scots who led the
way scoring four tries. They capitalised on
some sloppy play admittedly, but ferocious

feebly against Ire-
land and the game
was effecti vel y
over by half-time
as the Irish ran in
three racing to a
20 point lead. The
second try was prefaced by brilliant work
from Simon Zebo who had already scored
thanks to the genius of Brian ODriscoll. The
second half had barely begun when the Irish
more or less disappeared over the horizon
with another converted try. Predictably
Wales fought back but couldnt sustain
the magic, thus extending their losing run
to eight games.
By contrast England settled quickly into
winning ways. Their brilliant youngsters ran
rings round the Scots, not quite scoring at
will but certainly never remotely worried
defence and speed in the three-quarters has
transformed what threatened to be a dismal
season. The Scots owed much to the sheer
pace of Stuart Hogg at full-back, defending
like a hero and scoring an 80-metre try from
an interception by his own line.
Once again the sheer boredom of power
play in the forwards was exposed in a
dreadful evening match in Paris. Despite
the tedium, Wales came away with a
magnifcent victory against all the odds
so it seemed. They kept the ball in the
forwards inexorably wearing down their
opponents. For their part, the French lacked
invention on the rare occasions when they
won good ball. In the dying minutes as the
game looked destined for a draw, a kick
from fyhalf Dan Biggar behind the French
backs was scooped up by George North for
an inspiring try. Leigh Halfpennys kicking
ensured the widest margin of victory for
Wales over the French since 1975.
Yet another grim game was played out
in Dublin as the Irish sought to confrm
their recent supremacy over England. The
rain hammered down like stair-rods but
the princely kicking of Farrell ensured that
England gained their frst win in Dublin
for ten years. This inexperienced English
side has matured rapidly into a formidable
outft. The fnal challenge against Wales in
Cardiff in March seems the only obstacle
between them and a Grand Slam. Who
would bet against them lifting the World
Cup as well?
Warren Gatland has raised a few eye-
brows in a briefng about selection for the
37-man Lions squad. He appeared to sug-
gest that he didnt want too many English
players after the controversy that nation
caused at the last World Cup where they
were endlessly followed by news-hounds
looking for and getting a good story.
He assured his audience that what really
mattered for the Lions was the quality of
the player not his country of origin and that
if the best XV were English, then all ffteen
would be picked.
Very likely at this stage!

American Winger Brek Shea
Completes Move To Stoke
STOKE CITY has fnalized its acquisition of
Brek Shea after the American winger secured
a work permit and international clearance just
hours before the January transfer window
closed.
The 22-year-old Shea signed a four-and-
half-year contract for his move from FC Dallas
of Major League Soccer. Stoke said it paid a
2.5m transfer fee.
Stoke manager Tony Pulis last month
called it fantastic news and said Shea is
a very, very exciting player.
Shea, who has played for FC Dallas since
2008, is recovering from surgery in Novem-
ber on his right foot. He has yet to score in
15 appearances with the US national team.
He joins American defender Geoff Cameron
at Stoke.
Beckham Joins PSG, Will
Donate Salary To Charity
DAVID BECKHAM has joined Paris Saint-
Germain and says he will donate his salary
to a childrens charity.
The 37-year-old former England captain
was presented at the French clubs Parc des
Princes stadium last month. The club said he
signed a fve-month deal.
PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaif says
were very happy to welcome David Beck-
ham to Paris Saint-Germain. He will be joining
for fve months until 30 June.
During that time, Beckham says his salary
will go to a Paris childrens charity.
PSG is the latest stop in Beckhams glam-
orous career, which has seen him win titles
with Manchester United, Real Madrid and the
Los Angeles Galaxy.
Notts County Survives
Winding-Up Order
NOTTS COUNTY, the worlds oldest profes-
sional football club, is still in business after
a court dismissed a winding-up order over
unpaid taxes.
The club, which was founded in 1862,
says the petition brought by HM Revenue and
Customs over bills due in December last year
has been dismissed in a matter of seconds
by the High Court on last month.
County is in the third tier of English football
and narrowly avoided going into administra-
tion in 2010.
A club statement released, ahead of the
decision, said the board would be seeking to
recover all costs for the harm suffered by the
football club by the HMRCs action.
Forest Manager Alex Mcleish
Leaves After 41 Days
ALEX MCLEISH has left Nottingham Forest
after only 41 days as manager.
In a statement issued through the League
Managers Association, McLeish says hes
extremely saddened to be leaving after such
a short period.
The two-time European Cup winners are
11th in the League Championship, Englands
second division.
McLeish says there was a difference in
the understanding of the development strat-
egy of the football club and it was felt by both
parties that we should part company.
Liverpool Defender Carragher
To Retire This Summer
LONG-SERVING Liverpool defender Jamie
Carragher will retire at the end of the season,
concluding a distinguished one-club career
that marked him as one of the English Pre-
mier Leagues most competitive and tough-
tackling center backs.
The 35-year-old Carragher has been at
Liverpool since the age of nine and made 723
appearances 496 in the league.
This will be my last season at Liverpool
and my last as a professional footballer, the
former England international said.
It has been a privilege and an honor
to represent this great club for as long as
I have and I am immensely proud to have
done so.
Only Ian Callaghan has made more ap-
pearances for Liverpool than Carragher, who
often flled in as captain in the absence of
close friend Steven Gerrard.
Carragher made his Liverpool debut in
January 1997 and was a member of the team
that won three trophies the FA Cup, League
Cup and UEFA Cup in 2001 and then the
Champions league in 2005.
Paolo Di Canio Quits As
Swindon Manager
PAOLO DI CANIOS frst managerial job is
over after he resigned from English third-tier
club Swindon.
In a statement last month, the Italian cited
a number of broken promises and claimed
his position had become untenable with
continuing uncertainty over the southwest
English clubs ownership.
The former West Ham, Juventus and
Lazio striker had said earlier that he was
considering his position following the sale
of a player.
Paul Ince Takes Charge Of
Blackpool And Son Thomas
FORMER Manchester United and England
midfelder Paul Ince has been hired to man-
age second-tier club Blackpool, where his
son Thomas plays.
The 21-year-old Ince has played for Black-
pool since leaving Liverpool two years ago.
His 45-year-old father is returning to
management after a near two-year absence,
and took charge of training for the frst time
February 18.
Ince says that considering Ive watched
the team play for the last 14 months, its
strange sitting here as the manager, having
obviously watched Blackpool as a fan as well
as watching my son play.
Ince is Blackpools third manager this
season and previously coached at Maccles-
feld Town, MK Dons, Blackburn Rovers and
Notts County.
Wambach A Winner In Her
200th Match Against Scots
ABBY WAMBACH scored on a diving header
in the 51st minute, and the United States
womens soccer team beat Scotland, 3-1,
in a friendly in Nashville.
The game was Wambachs 200th inter-
national match.
Wambach became the eighth American to
play at least 200 games for the national team,
and she served as captain for the game in
honor of the milestone. Her teammates kept
trying to set up Wambach and she fnally
converted when Sydney Leroux passed to
her just in front for her 153rd career goal and
63rd on a header.

Government Relaxes Tax
Rules For London GP
BRITAIN is waiving its tax rules to lure
Usain Bolt and other top international
athletes to compete at this summers
Diamond League event in Londons
Olympic Stadium.
The British government has agreed to
an amnesty that will allow foreigners to
compete tax-free at the London Grand
Prix on July 27 the anniversary of
the opening ceremony of the London
Games.
British treasury chief George Os-
borne says he is delighted to grant this
exemption and that the government is
determined to do everything possible to
secure the Olympic legacy.
Britain imposes taxes on appearance
fees and prize money for non-resident ath-
letes when they compete in the country.
Bolt, the Olympic champion at 100 and
200 meters, hasnt raced in British meets
since 2009 because of the tax rule.
Moving To MLS Could Harm Lampards
England Career Hodgson
Shelley Rudman Wins Skeleton World Title
By Rob Harris
AFTER SCORING Englands frst match-
winner against Brazil in 23 years, Frank
Lampard was told by coach Roy Hodgson
that moving to the United States could
jeopardize his international prospects.
The 34-year-old midfelder has been in-
formed by Chelsea that his contract wont
be extended when it expires at the end of
the season. He has been linked with a move
to Major League Soccers Los Angeles
Galaxy but, having already scored 11 goals
for Chelsea this season, Lampard will not
be short of offers.
I would rather hope that we will see
him still, if not in England, in Europe
because of course that will make my task
a bit easier, Hodgson said last month after
Englands 2-1 victory over Brazil.
If he does follow David Beckham
and goes further afeld, that complicates
matters, Hodgson said. He of course
understands that, the further afeld you go,
the more problematic it does become for
the media to follow you, and the national
team coach to follow you.
SHELLEY Rudman of Britain won her
frst skeleton world championship title last
month, holding off a strong challenge from
Noelle Pikus-Pace of the United States.
Rudmans one-second lead from the
opening two runs was cut to 0.57 by Pikus-
Pace, who was fastest in the fnal two runs
and took silver.
Sarah Reid of Canada earned bronze,
trailing 1.41 behind Rudmans combined
time of 4 min, 38.60 secs on the Olympia
track.
In the mens skeleton, Alexander
Tretyakov of Russia led after the opening
two runs.
The 31-year-old Rudman added the
world title to her victory in the season-long
2012 World Cup.
