Piers Morgan
Deportation
Petition Gains
Momentum
TENS OF thousands of people have
signed a petition calling for British CNN
host Piers Morgan to be deported from
the US over his gun control views.
Morgan has taken an aggressive
stand for tighter US gun laws in the
wake of the Newtown, Connecticut,
school shooting. Last month he called
a gun advocate appearing on his Piers
Morgan Tonight show an unbelievably
stupid man.
Now, gun rights activists are fghting
back. A petition created December 21
on the White House e-petition website
by a user in Texas accuses Morgan of
engaging in a hostile attack against
the US Constitution by targeting the
Second Amendment. It demands he be
deported immediately for exploiting
his position as a national network tele-
vision host to stage attacks against the
rights of American citizens.
The petition has already hit the
25,000 signature threshold to get a
White House response. By December
24, it had 31,813 signatures.
Morgan seemed unfazed and even
amused by the movement.
In a series of Twitter messages, he
alternately urged his followers to sign
the petition and in response to one article
about the petition said bring it on
as he appeared to track the petitions
progress.
If I do get deported from America
for wanting fewer gun murders, are
there any other countries that will have
me? he wrote.
Government Gives OK R
To Resume Fracking
BRITAINS government has given
the go-ahead to resume fracking the
controversial practice of drilling for gas
trapped in shale in the UK.
Shale gas exploration had been sus-
pended in Britain last year after a series
of small tremors near an exploration site
in Lancashire in northwest England.
Edward Davey, the energy and cli-
mate change secretary, said last month
that shale gas exploration promises
a new potential energy resource for
Britain that could reduce its reliance on
imported gas.
Davey added that new controls will
be put in place to reduce the risk of seis-
mic activity. However, environmental
activists oppose the move, fearing the
landscape will be scarred.
Cameron Urges
Quick Creation Of
Press Regulator
PRIME MINISTER Cameron has warned
newspaper editors they must act quickly
to set up an independent press regulator
in the wake of a media ethics scandal.
David Cameron spoke days after
a report he commissioned on press
wrongdoing proposed that the press
should be regulated by an independent
body enshrined in law.
Cameron has expressed misgivings
about that and last month participated
in a summit to hear proposals for a new
system not backed by law.
He told the BBC that hed said there
that the clock is ticking for the industry
to implement changes outlined in the re-
port from Lord Justice Brian Leveson.
The report made recommendations
to root out a sub-culture of unethical
behavior that led to Britains phone-
hacking scandal.
KEY DEVELOPMENTS in the
phone hacking scandal involving
segments of Britains unruly press:
November 2005: The News of the World
tabloid reports that Prince William has
knee injury. Buckingham Palace complaint
prompts police inquiry that subsequently
showed information came from a voice-
mail that was hacked.
August 2006: News of the World re-
porter Clive Goodman and private investi-
gator Glenn Mulcaire arrested. In January,
Goodman sentenced to four months in
prison, Mulcaire gets six months, and News
of the World editor Andy Coulson resigns
but denies knowing about phone hacking.
Newspaper says hacking limited to one
rogue reporter.
2007
May 31: Conservative Party leader
David Cameron hires Coulson as media
adviser.
2008
April: James Murdoch, son of media
mogul Rupert Murdoch and a News Corp
executive, approves payment of around
700,000 ($1.1m) to soccer executive
Gordon Taylor. After hacking scandal
escalates in 2011, Murdoch testifes that
he was not aware that hacking was a key
issue in the case.
2010
May 11: Cameron becomes prime
minister; Coulson named communica-
tions chief.
2011
January 14: Police reopen phone-
hacking investigation after News of the
World says it has found signifcant new
information and fres assistant news editor
Ian Edmondson.
January 21: Coulson resigns from
Camerons offce.
April 5: Police arrest Edmondson and
chief reporter Neville Thurlbeck on suspi-
cion of intercepting voicemails.

Parliament To Legalize R
Same-Sex Marriage
THE BRITISH government says it will
introduce a bill next year legalizing gay
marriage but banning the Church of
England from conducting same-sex
ceremonies.
Equalities minister Maria Miller said
last month the bill will authorize same
sex civil unions, as well as religious
marriages if religions decide to opt in.
But she says the legislation will make it
unlawful for the Church of England and
the Church of Wales the established
churches in those countries to conduct
gay weddings.
Since 2005, gay couples in Britain
have been able to form civil partner-
ships, which carry the same legal status
as marriage.
Plans to introduce same-sex marriage
have been opposed by the Anglican and
Roman Catholic churches.
Some religious groups, including
Quakers, say they want to conduct same-
sex ceremonies.
25 YEARS LATER
Court Quashes R
Hillsborough Verdict
AFTER NEARLY a quarter of a century,
the families of the victims of Britains
worst sports disaster are closer than ever
in their campaign for the truth.
Britains High Court and the govern-
ment delivered twin decisions last month
that marked signifcant milestones in the
relatives search for justice over the 1989
Hillsborough tragedy in which 96 Liver-
pool fans were crushed to death.
A new criminal investigation was
ordered by the home secretary, and
about an hour later, Britains top judge
overturned the original ruling that the 96
deaths at the FA Cup semifnal match
were accidental.
Id like a corporate manslaughter
verdict in the inquest its the least for
what they have done, said Anne Wil-
liams, whose 15-year-old son, Kevin,
died at Hillsborough.
Williams was in a wheelchair inside
the court last month, weeks after being
diagnosed with bowel cancer. Now she
has renewed hope that she will live to
see the full truth about her sons death
established in court.
I am glad we never gave up. It has
been hard, Williams said. God willing,
I will be here, it has been a long wait to
see justice.
Report Blames Chaos, Not R
Cover-Up, For BBC Scandal
A BBC REVIEW has absolved senior
executives of trying to bury an explo-
sive story about one of its best-known
childrens television stars, saying man-
agement errors were to blame for the
fact that a planned expose on pedophilia
allegations against the late Jimmy Savile
was canceled.
Institutional chaos and confusion but

How The Royal Baby Will
Ascend To The Throne
WHAT COULD top a magnif-
cent year that brought the glory
of the Queens Diamond Jubilee,
followed closely by the incredibly
successful Olympic Games, which
even saw Her Majesty drop in
via parachute?
The announcement that many were
anticipating, urging, and dreaming of came
on December 3 . . . Kate was pregnant.
And so it begins: predictions, specula-
tion on a baby name (or babies), even the
childs weight, and more importantly,
questions of ascendency to the throne.
A recent change in a centuries-old law
almost guarantees William and Kates
baby will likely reign as the Monarch in the
UK. The child regardless of gender will
remain third in line to the throne.
Only two people are ahead of the baby:
Prince William and Prince Charles, while
Williams brother, Prince Harry, will be
bumped down to fourth in line by the
babys birth. If the baby is a girl, she will
be third in line to be queen of England.
Under the previous law of male primo-
geniture, which was established in 1701,
male heirs were given priority over female
heirs and could move ahead of them in the
line of succession. That meant a younger
brother could leapfrog his older sister
based on the law. Queen Elizabeth II was
allowed to be queen because she did not
have any brothers.
Heres how the top 10 positions cur-
rently stand:
Kates Hospital Nurse Committed Suicide Coroner
where the pregnant Duchess of Cam-
bridge was being treated were deeply
apologetic last month as they described
how their joke ended up going too far.
They say they expected a hang-up and
have a few laughs.
The phone call in which they imper-
sonated the Queen and Prince Charles
went through, and their station broadcast
and even trumpeted the confidential
information received. Whatever pride
there had been over the hoax was obliter-
ated by worldwide public outrage after the
death of Jacintha Saldanha, the frst nurse
they talked to.

Leaves Hospital
FORMER British Prime Minister
Margaret Thatcher has left the hospital
after an operation to remove a bladder
growth.
The 87-year-old former Conserva-
tive leader was admitted to the hospital
the last week of December to have the
operation.
The BBC and Sky News said Thatch-
er was doing well and left the hospital
December 30 to convalesce privately.
Her spokesman did not immediately
return calls seeking confrmation.
Thatcher, Britains first female
prime minister, has been in fragile
health since she suffered a series of
small strokes more than a decade ago.
Although she has occasionally appeared
at private functions, she has not made
public statements for some time.
She served as prime minister from
May 1979 until her resignation in No-
vember 1990.

Mistakes And Slips Caught
On Network Rail CCTV
THE FESTIVE season has come and gone,
but the humour it produced caught on Net-
work Rails CCTV video footage was worth
not missing.
Much of the footage is of passengers
embarrassing accidents on their way home
from Christmas and New Years parties.
Included is a woman who was dragged
up an escalator on her back after getting a
high heel stuck.
Another clip shows a woman crashing
to the ground head-frst while running for a
train perhaps this was saved for the more
sadistic viewers.
And in a third, two women twirl drunkenly
around a pole before colliding and ending up
on the foor.
The footage was actually released by Net-
work Rail to urge travellers to take extra care
at stations during the festive season.
Robin Gisby, Network Rails managing
director for network operations, said: A
combination of more people carrying Christ-
mas shopping, trailing wheelie suitcases, wet
and windy weather and people travelling late
after festive parties, make December a time
where we see more people take a tumble. We
dont want to see anyone hurt at our stations
so well be doing what we can to keep con-
courses dry and clean and signposting lifts
clearly for those with heavy luggage. Please
plan ahead so you dont end up rushing to
catch your train falling over could be a
miserable end to an enjoyable evening.
Porting Students Go Head-To-
Head With Milking Rivals
DUELLING students in the northeast of Eng-
land have gone through a few gallons of milk
and port in a recent viral video craze.
During November, undergraduates from
Newcastle hit the headlines after a video of
them milking pouring milk over them-
selves in public went viral.
However, students at Durham are now
taunting their rivals with a video of them-
selves doing the same stunt, but with bottles
of port.
The Durham students said that they
fgured if their Newcastle counterparts were
crying over spilt milk they should try doing
it the Durham way: #portingDurham.
Their antics have been highlighted in
Durhams online student tabloid, The Tab,
who described it as a cracking effort from
Durhams fnest.
Its all about one-upmanship, a porting
spokesman said. We commend Newcastle
in their valiant effort inspiring us to go
one further.
We were approached by a high street
washing powder brand, and it all fell into
place. What better thing to do than pour
fortifed wine over crisp white shirts?
However, a Milking Newcastle represen-
tative hit back, telling them: Come back
and talk to us when you have half a million
views.

S**t Exhibition In London
Causes A Stink
LESS ATTRACTIVE parts of London are
the topic of a new celebratory exhibition
in the city.
Sh*t London (not as graphic as it sounds)
features hilarious pictures snapped by the
public of bitter sweet ironies or hilarious
mistakes spotted in the city.
Patrick Daltons blog inspired the exhibits,
and he explains explains: There are so many
unintentionally amusing things around the
city if you just choose to notice them.
Hilarious submissions include a Smoking
Paradise shop next to a Cancer Research
shop and a dumped mattress daubed
with the notice Free Matress, No Visible
Stains.
Spokeswoman Danielle Pender for KK
Outlet in Hoxton, where the exhibition runs
from December 7, says: The images, no
matter how grim, are life affirming and
reassuring that underneath the modern day
desire for perfection and the homogeny of
the Tesco flled high street people are still
people, they sometimes make mistakes and
life is all the better for them.
Organisers are also asking for entrants
for the Sh*t London Awards, with categories
including Best/Worst Christmas Decora-
tions, Ugliest London Building, Best/Worst
Business Name and Most Depressing View
From Work.
When It Comes To Sex, Men
Know More About Cars
JUST A SIMPLE question about a mans
anatomy is far less possible to get an an-
swer, than a question about his car.
According to research, issues under
their car bonnet, for the average man, are
much more part of his psyche than naming
a body parts.
Nine in ten men were confident they
could locate a cars oil dipstick but only half
were able to identify key parts of their own
anatomy. In fact, altogether 90 percent said
they could locate a cars oil dipstick and
89 percent could point to the radiator, says
research by the Lloydspharmacy Online
Doctor.
But just six percent accurately identifed
the common causes of erectile dysfunction,
with a third wrongly believing it was caused
by wearing skinny jeans.
When asked to locate key sex organs, just
52 percent answered correctly in the survey
of 1,500 men. Amazingly, one in 12 thought
they were in the ear.
Dr Tom Brett, sexual health expert at
Lloydspharmacy Online Doctor, said: We
all know that two of the most important
things for many men are their sex life and
their car.
If the cars not performing properly,
the British male is usually pretty confdent
he can get under the bonnet and solve the
problem.
But when it comes to the mechanics of
their sex organs, men are clearly less likely
to spot a potential problem.
Ancient Fort Serves As Holiday
Hotel In The Solent
FOLLOWING a 3m transformation project a
historic sea fort had been turned into a luxury
retreat. Spitbank Fort, was built to withstand
a French assault with 15ft thick walls, and it
sits in the middle of the Solent.
The Solent is the strip of water (ap-
proximately 30 miles long by three to fve
miles wide) separating Englands southern
mainland and the Isle of Wight.
The 134-year-old fort stands a mile out
in the water, and the only way to reach
the 350-a-night hotel is via taxi boat. The
unique destination boasts nine rooms, a
Crows Nest bar, hot tub, sun deck, gaming
table and a restaurant.
The unlikely getaway spot even has a
frepit where visitors can sit on cool winter
evenings to watch sailing boats, cruise liners
or warships foating by.
Many of the original features have been
kept intact and incorporated into the new
design, with gun ports transformed into
bedroom windows and gunpowder rooms
enlisted as cosy snugs.
Groups of 18 can hire the fort exclusively
for 5,000, which includes lunch upon ar-
rival, champagne reception, a three-course
dinner and breakfast the following morn-
ing.
Mark Watts, general manager of the hotel,
said: It was an empty shell when we bought
it in 2010.
It has been used for various things in
the past but we had this plan to turn it into a
luxury hotel in the middle of the Solent.
Weve been open for fve months now
and weve had an amazing response.
Peanut Butter For Those Who
Dare Sales Are Hot
A SPICY peanut butter, touted to be hotter
than the worlds hottest chilli.
A new spicy variety of peanut butter six
times hotter than the worlds hottest chilli is
now available in Britain.
The aptly named Instant Regret peanut
butter is packed with capsaicin the compo-
nent that provides the heat within a chilli. On
the Scoville scale, which measures the heat
of chilli peppers, the peanut butter boasts a
whopping rating of 12,000,000.
To put this in perspective, the worlds
hottest chilli the Moruga Scorpion rates
at 2,000,000, as does the most legal variant
of pepper spray.
The spread is not for the faint-hearted and
even comes with a warning to users: Do
NOT Give to unsuspecting people without
warning, even if you dont like them. Obvi-
ously, the food is not suitable for the elderly
nor children.
So fercely hot is the butter that the retail-
ers, Firebox said they had to persuade the
factory to produce it.
Instant Regret creator Ben Redhead said:
During the tasting process we frst laughed,
but then we cried. Measuring a mental 12
million SHU on the Scoville Scale, its prob-
ably not your everyday breakfast spread.
For anyone brave enough to give it a
try, the peanut butter is for sale online at
7 a jar.
Rare Version Of Beatles Album
Finally Sold For 12,000
A RARE version of a Beatles album, which
was expected to fetch 15,000, has fnally
been sold for 12,000 at an auction in Sus-
sex. The rare copy of a Beatles LP signed by
all four band members.
Chris Collins from Eastbourne and his
sister Liz Chambers from Worthing initially
turned down a 12,000 bid for a copy of the
album, Please Please Me, a report said.
They had hoped to get 15,000 for the LP,
which was given to their late father during a
drinking session.
But the siblings have now accepted
12,000 from private buyers. The album was
signed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney,
George Harrison and Ringo Starr after they
used it as a drinks coaster during a card
game in 1963.
It was even withdrawn from sale after
failing to reach its 15,000 reserve price, but
auctioneer Paul Campbell said, The record
has now sold for a hammer price of 12,000,
to a private buyer.
He said the vendors had decided to cut
their losses and accept 12,000 following
renewed interest from a Dutch Beatles enthu-
siast living in Worthing and his father.
Wrong Number Sees Brian
Find His Bride
A MAN dialled the wrong number and last
month fnished up marrying the lady he spoke
with nine years ago. The pairs story could
be a romance novel the way it unfolded, and
leaves them with romantic memories of their
early meeting.
Elizabeth Bennett and Brian Woodward,
last month celebrated their fateful meet-
ing by tying the knot at St Peters Church,
Ickburgh, Norfolk, all those years after their
conversation.
The former Mrs Bennett descri bed
Brian as really rude when he realised hed
reached the wrong person, but did call back
to apologise the following day, and thats
when the relationship began to develop. She
added: A couple of weeks later he turned
up at Thetford train station and hasnt been
away since, she said.
Mrs Woodward, 25, said her husband, 26,
popped the question the day after my 21st
birthday four years ago, She added: that
the wedding went perfectly well and the
weather was better than we hoped for.
One of the four bridesmaids, Hannah
Hamilton, said the day had been flled with
happiness and love. And she knew the
couple, who live in Mundford, Norfolk, plan
to go on honeymoon in the new year.
Innocent Garden
Gnome Could Watch
Over Your Home
MANY EMPTY homes in the UK can
now be protected from break-ins by an
innocent-looking garden gnome.
The electronic protection came from
Ian Burgess who hid a sophisticated home
security system inside a garden gnome
to help people protect their unguarded
homes.
Burgess was commission by Con-
fused.com after research showed nearly
half of Britains homes were left empty for
at least one night over the festive period.
The inventor named his creation Festive
Garden Guardian conceals an adapted
network wireless security camera coupled
with day and night motion sensors.
The camera takes photos of any in-
truders which are then instantly sent to a
pre-determined email address or mobile
phone. The homeowner can also log on
to the camera remotely, via a laptop or
smartphone, to monitor whats going on
at their home.
Burgess, of Setwo Limited, says he
has seen frst hand the effect a break-in
can have on a persons sense of security.
He added: Having your home burgled is
a horrible experience. Having your home
broken into, and knowing someones taken
your things can really unsettle you.
Thats why I wanted to create the Fes-
tive Garden Guardians so that I can help
protect people from having the same thing
happen to them.
People can apply to take part in a
Confused.com pilot scheme to test the
effectiveness of the new invention.
If it proves successful, the Garden
Guardians could be rolled out commer-
cially later this year.
Darts Fan Kicked
Out For Looking
Like Jesus
A MAN at a darts championship match
at Butlins in Minehead was thrown out
of the building because he looked like
Jesus.
Nathan Grindal, 33, was enjoying the
televised match between champ Phil
Taylor and Kim Huybrechts when some
of the crowd noticed the resemblance.
Chants of Jesus quickly spread
through the 4,500-strong crowd, inter-
rupting play.
Security was called before six bounc-
ers escorted Mr Grindal from the Cash
Converters Players Championship,
being shown on ITV4.
Grindal, a labourer, was escorted to a
nearby bar where security staff bought
him a pint and told him to watch the rest
of the fnal on the telly. He watched the
legendary Taylor win then found himself
being asked to pose for signed photos
with fans as they left the arena.
Nathan, who emigrated from his na-
tive Australia to Oxford six years ago,
said: I didnt go to the darts dressed
as Jesus I went as me. It was all very
weird and distressing. In his post-match
interview, Phil Taylor said something like
if I ever see Jesus again, Ill crucify him
myself. Now thats just hurtful.
Dave Allen, spokesman for the Pro-
fessional Darts Corporation, said Nathan
was ejected to prevent his presence
becoming a nuisance to the players.
He said: There was a lot of chanting
of Jesus and I think to avoid it becoming
too much of a distraction for the players
he was taken by security to another part
of the complex.

KATE EXPECTATIONS
Not an original headline one used already
by two national newspapers in London.
What appeared to be a brilliant piece of
journalistic enterprise in Australia ended in
the death of a nurse in London.
Two disc jockeys, Mel Greig and Michael
Christian, made a prank telephone call to the
King Edward VII hospital in London, where the
Duchess of Cambridge was being treated for
morning sickness, to fnd out the state of her
health. They impersonated the voices of the
Queen and Prince Charles.
Their call was taken by Nurse Jacintha
Saldanha, who passed the caller onto another
nurse who answered questions about the
Duchesss health. When the hoax was dis-
covered, the Saldanha was devastated and
took her own life. Equally devastated were the
two DJs, who said that they were heartbro-
ken this wasnt meant to happen
The DJs radio station, 2DayFM, has
offered to donate 320,000 to the nurses
family the money to come from advertising
profts until the end of the year.
Later it was revealed that the nurse left
three suicide notes before she was found
hanged at her apartment.
THESE ARE A FEW OF HER
FAVOURITE THINGS
The Queen is to stage a great exhibition
of her favourite things to mark the 60
th
an-
niversary of her coronation.
She will allow up to 200 frms with royal
warrants to showcase their goods in a four-
day festival being staged in the gardens
of Buckingham Palace from July 11 to 14
next year.
The frst day will be by royal invitation
only but tickets have gone on sale to the
public online and by phone for the three
following days. They cost 30 for the day
and 90 for the evening, when a festival
gala featuring young performers will also be
held. A total of 60,000 people will be able to
attend the festival.
Organisers defended the cost of tickets,
saying it was a unique opportunity to visit
the Palace and festival. Profts will go to char-
ity and also be used for 10 apprenticeships
at the Palace.
Sir David Walker, Master of the Queens
Household, said the festival will bring
together a whole raft of companies which
represent the very best in Britain plc.
DEATH OF A STARGAZER
After inspiring generations of stargazers,

The monocle-wearing broadcaster had
been in ill health and failed to fght off an

HAS THE world really ended? According to the Mayan calendar, the world ended
on December 21, 2012 which, if you are reading this, would have been last year
too late to wish you a Merry Christmas but have a Happy New Year!
As I am writing this column several days BEFORE the end of the world, this might be my

have said will take place while the planet itself will not be destroyed. Well, at least thats

cause of food poisoning since 1957.
Although not professionally trained, Sir
Patrick became devoted to astronomy at
the age of six after reading a book about the
solar system.
In recent years, he was confned to a
wheelchair and unable to look through a
telescope due to declining eyesight and
paralysis in his right hand.
THE GIFT OF THE GAFFE
In the 65 years since he married the
Queen, Prince Philip has built a reputation
for his caustic wit and politically incorrect
gaffes.
He remained true to form at the Royal
Variety Performance at the Royal Albert Hall
when the Duke, 91, was seen putting his
fngers in his ears during a song by Alicia
Keys, making clear what he thought.
Teen favourites One Direction, Girls Aloud,
Rod Stewart and Britains Got Talent winners,
Ashleigh Butler and her dancing dog Pudsey,
were among the other acts that performed at
the 100
th
variety show.
But when asked after the show what his
favourite act had been, he said: All of them ...
but to be honest, were both stone deaf.
The Princes forthright verdict on modern
pop stars comes before publication of a book
that catalogues his recent foot-in-mouth mo-
ments, from asking Health Secretary, Jeremy
Hunt, Who are you? to enquiring whether
the disabled mayor of Waltham Forest had
run over anybody in his mobility scooter.
Authors Phil Dampier and Ashley Walton
say they also hope to show how the Duke of
Edinburgh has often been ahead of his time
on subjects from conservation to religion
and the media.
The veteran royal correspondents have
now published Prince Philip: Wise Words and
Golden Gaffes to mark the Queen and Prince
Philips 65
th
wedding anniversary.
TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH
Marathon man Dr Andrew Murray got off
to a dream start after winning the frst of his
seven races on seven continents in seven
days in record time.
The breathless GP won the 42.2km (26.2
miles) Antarctic Ice Marathon in 3hr 41min
15sec. Dr Murray, 32, from Edinburgh, has
run more than 150 marathons but said this
was one of the best. His biggest concern
was catching his fight out of Antarctica in
time for the South American leg of his mis-
sion, as fights are often delayed.
WILLS TOPS POPULARITY POLL
It is no great shock that Prince William
tops the royal popularity poll. He is young,
compassionate and appeals to a wide section
of the British public. He is also part of the
most famous double act in the world right
now following his marriage to Kate.
He has also now started to do more of-
fcial duties, interacting with the public as
well as doing his day job as a search and
rescue pilot.
However, it is a surprise that he pipped
his grandmother to the top spot, especially
as the poll comes at the end of her Diamond
Jubilee year.
Perhaps the poll shows that after all the
pomp and ceremony and fag-waving, people
are now looking to the future and to a different
type of monarchy, less stuffy, more hands
on, more all-encompassing.
Also, the princes for so long known as
the boys have grown into their royal roles
and become men with real purpose. No
longer are William or Harry in the shadow of
their mother. Her life and death is consigned
to history.
Her sons are now very much continuing
the royal story. Kate is still fnding her feet
and will have to do more engagements and
embrace more charities to win hearts and
minds.
William and Kate are undoubtedly the
future. They will spearhead a modern mon-
archy. But there will be no fddling with the
line of succession to match the fndings of
any polls.
What it does suggest is that that if the
monarchy is to continue in its present popu-
larity, William will have to do more public
engagements and he may have to forfeit his
beloved job as an RAF pilot for royal duty.
WITHER THE WEATHER?
We have had plenty of weather in the UK
these past few weeks, with storms and foods
in many parts of England.
Fortunately, London was not very much af-
fected, although there was plenty of rain and
wind. Gale force winds were mainly on the
west coast, and the rain and foods caused
many houses to be destroyed.
The storms have subsided so far but every
day brings a mixture of sunshine and showers
and it is diffcult to decide whether to wear
winter or summer outfts.
Several lives have been lost due to the
storms, when people have tried to rescue
relatives and property
Transport is diffcult, especially since the
announcement that rail fares are set to soar
by 17 per cent in the new year that is, if we
HAVE a new year.
So for the moment the outlook is bleak,
and as I write, clouds are already forming in
the sky (where else?) promising yet another
day of rain and wind.
So if you want a great holiday, come to
sunny England!
FINALLY
As a 90-year-old woman decided to return
to her north of England home, her friend
asked her whether she would be looking up
some old friends.
Ill probably have to dig them up before I
look them up she replied.

Rolls-Royce Hands Over
Evidence In Bribery Probe

Rolls-Royce says it has given information
to Britains Serious Fraud Offce, which
is investigating alleged bribery and cor-
ruption in Indonesia and China.
Rolls-Royce said last month that the
outcome of the investigation is uncertain
but could lead to prosecutions of individ-
uals and the company itself. It added that
the Serious Fraud Offce is investigating
dealings with intermediaries.
Rolls-Royce said it will appoint an
independent senior person to lead a
review of current procedures and report
to the boards ethics committee.
John Rishton, chief executive of
Rolls-Royce, said he and the board will
not tolerate improper business conduct
of any sort and will take all necessary
action to ensure compliance.

JK Rowling Dismayed
At Response To
Press Report
HARRY POTTER author JK Rowling has
expressed alarm and dismay at Prime
Minister David Camerons response to a
report on press wrongdoing in Britain.
Rowling was writing in support of
Lord Justice Brian Levesons recom-
mendations published last month,
which proposed that the press should
be regulated by an independent body
enshrined in law.
But Cameron, along with newspaper
editors, expressed misgivings about the
proposals, saying setting down new laws
about a press regulator could infringe on
the independence of Britains press.
Rowling gave evidence last year
about press intrusion into her familys
privacy during an inquiry that preceded
the report. She had told of how journal-
ists had driven her out of her home and
targeted her fve-year-old daughter at
school.
GUT-WRENCHING
Theres not a minute that goes by that
we dont think about her family and what
they must be going through, 2DayFM
radio host Mel Greig told Australias A
Current Affair, her voice shaking. And
the thought that we may have played a part
in that is gut-wrenching.
Prime Minister David Cameron said at
a luncheon that the suicide of this nurse,
who worked incredibly hard and obviously
was incredibly dedicated ... is an absolute
tragedy.
Greig and co-host Michael Christian
spoke publicly about the prank for the frst
time in the televised interview. Another
interview on rival show Today Tonight.
The radio stations owner said Greig
and Christian were receiving psychologi-
cal counseling to deal with the tragedy. A
British lawmaker said he wished that much
was being done for Saldanhas grieving
family.
Southern Cross Austereo, the parent
company of 2DayFM, released a statement
later saying that Greig and Christians
show had been terminated and there
would be a company-wide suspension of
prank calls. The DJs themselves remain
suspended.
Saldanha, 46, had transferred their call
last week to a fellow nurse caring for the
duchess, who was being treated for acute
morning sickness at King Edward VII
Hospital in London. That nurse said the
former Kate Middleton hasnt had any
retching with me and shes been sleeping
on and off.
Three days later, Saldanha was found
dead at the hospitals nurses accom-
modation.
The DJs said when the idea for the
call came up in a team meeting, no one
expected that they would actually be put
through to the duchess ward.
The joke 100 percent was on us, he
said. The idea was never, Lets call up
and get through to Kate, or Lets speak
to a nurse. The joke was our accents are
horrible, they dont sound anything like
who theyre intended to be.
Southern Cross Austereo CEO Rhys
Holleran has called Saldanhas death a trag-
edy but defended the prank as a standard
part of radio culture. He has also insisted
the station had
not broken any
laws. He told
Fairfax Radio
that his station
had t r i ed at
least fve times
to contact the
London hospital
to discuss the
prank before it
aired, but never succeeded.
When asked why the company made
the attempts, Holleran replied because
we did want to speak with them about it.
When pressed as to whether this meant
the station had reservations about the
pre-recorded prank, Holleran said only, I
think that thats a process that we follow
and we have checks and balances on all
those things.
The King Edward VII Hospital denied
that its management had been contacted
by the radio station.
Following the hoax call, the radio
station announced a memorial fund to
help support the nurses family, with the
hospital making the frst donation.

SEVEN point seven percent unemployment
rate, GDP growing at 2.7 percent, and 12
million unemployed in this country. Stag-
gering numbers by any statistical measure.
While most of America struggles to fnd a
way out theres a different story being told
in Silicon Valley.
The current environment includes two
percent unemployment in the technology
feld, rapid employment growth in R & D
sectors, with companies like Microsoft stat-
ing that they cannot fll jobs as fast as they
are being created. At last report, Microsoft
had over 6,000 open technology positions
throughout the USA, with 3,400 of those
being research and development positions.
How a home grown company doing business
in the middle of the worst recession of our
lives, is struggling to fnd qualifed workers is
the center piece of the new STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering & Math) jobs bill.
The STEM jobs bill allocates an addi-
tional 55,000 work visa numbers for students
graduating with high level STEM degrees. The
idea behind the bill is not particularly novel.
STEM related industries are responsible for
Possibilities for Legal
Immigration Reform
50 percent of the economy in the USA, yet
only 15 percent of Americans graduate with
degrees in such felds. These numbers that
put Microsofts unemployment fgures in a
better prospective. The concept is to provide
more work visas to foreign born students.
Each year nearly one million foreign born
students come to America for the opportunity
to learn at the best universities in the world
(while we may not have a Cambridge or
Oxford, we have a few others that arent
too bad). Of these students , thousand upon
hundreds of thousands earn high level STEM
degrees, but run into the road block that is
our immigration system.
These higher degree achieving students
are all fghting for 85,000 work visas allo-
cated by the US government per year. Those
highly educated students not lucky enough
to obtain a work visa, are kicked out of the
US to return to their home countries to now
compete against the US. The problem, is,
they win much of the time.
The STEM jobs bill proposed by the GOP
and passed in the House of Representatives
will take 55,000 visas away from the US
Diversity program visa lottery and allocate the
number to the 85,000 work visa cap. A move
that many say will strength the economy and
give the US an advantage moving into the
future. While all that sounds good, the bill is
not without its detractors.
The Democratically controlled Senate,
along with President Obama strongly op-
poses the bill and has voted in opposition
on the senate foor. The Democratic take
is that since all parties agree that there is a
shortage of qualifed US workers for available
employment position, now is the time for
comprehensive immigration reform; the time
for increased work visa numbers, increased
green card numbers, and that merely real-
locating numbers from the Diversity lottery
is not a solution.
While the parties disagreements about the
proper path to resolving our immigration and
qualifed worker issues are of no solace to
Microsoft, the mere fact that the parties are
talking, proposing bills, and receiving national
attention are steps towards the positive.
British Scouts
Consider
Allowing Athiests
Membership
ATHEISTS could be allowed into Brit-
ains boy and girl scouts after more than
a century.
The Scout Association said last month
it plans to draft an alternative oath without
references to God so that young people
who do not have a faith could also join
the organization.
The current oath which will remain in
use reads: On my honor, I promise that
I will do my best, to do my duty to God
and to the queen, to help other people and
to keep the Scout Law.
The group has offered alternative
versions of the words duty to God for
Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists for over
four decades, but there have been no such
exceptions made for atheists.
Wayne Bulpitt, the associations chief
commissioner in the UK, said the group is
asking its members views on the proposed
alternative to keep the group relevant and
to encourage membership.
EVOLVE
We are a values-based movement and
exploring faith and religion will remain
a key element of the Scouting program.
That will not change, he said. However,
throughout our 105-year history, we have
continued to evolve so that we remain rel-
evant to communities across the UK.
But he said the group plans to keep its
oath to the queen, although non-British
citizens living in Britain may pledge
duty to the country in which I am now
living.
The scouting movement began more
than a century ago and now encompasses
some 40 million members worldwide.
Scouts in each country run independently
and make their own policies.
In October, a San Francisco Bay-area
teenager was kicked
out of the Boy Scouts
of America because
of the organizations
national policy of ex-
cluding gay members.
The British Scout As-
sociation said they
have an equal oppor-
tunities policy and
welcome people of all
sexualities.

Records Shed Light On US-
Britain Extradition Case
By Holbrook Mohr
THE CASE against a British man detained
in Mississippi on charges of sexually
abusing a child in England in 1998 was
reopened after the victim found him on
Facebook in 2009, according to newly
unsealed federal court documents.
The documents unsealed last month in
US District Court in Gulfport, Mississippi,
offered new details on the nature of the
charges against Barry Willoughby.
Willoughby, 45, has been living in the
United States for years, and was taken
into custody in Biloxi on October 17 on a
warrant from Bradford, England.
The documents show hes charged in
England with sexually assaulting a girl
he was babysitting when she was eight
and nine-years-old. Willoughby denies
Cameron: British Agents Had Role In Lawyer Death
the allegations.
The victim said Willoughby told her
that their sexual encounters were a secret
and that if she told anyone she might die,
according to the documents fled in federal
court in Mississippi.
The girl told her mother about the abuse
in 1993, and they reported it to police
soon after.
REOPENED
The case was reopened after the victim
found Willoughby on Facebook in 2009,
the documents said.
Willoughby remains jailed in south
Mississippi.
Willoughbys Facebook page says he
was recently married and has worked at
casinos in Mississippi and Nevada after
working on a cruise ship in the 1990s.
PRIME MINISTER David Cameron
last month condemned actions by Brit-
ish agents in the 1989 death of a Belfast
lawyer, one of the most bitterly disputed
killings of the entire Northern Ireland
confict.
Cameron cited a long-awaited report on
the slaying that said there was a shocking
level of state collusion with an outlawed
Protestant group in the murder of Pat Fi-
nucane, who specialized in defending Irish
Republican Army suspects.
Two gunmen from the Ulster Defense
Association shot him more than a dozen
times in his Belfast home as he was hav-
ing Sunday lunch with his wife and three
children. Employees of the state and state
agents played key roles in the murder,
the report says.
It cannot be argued that these were
rogue agents, Cameron said. However,
he declined to order an inquiry, describing
the report as extensive.
Previous investigations already have
confrmed that both the British Army and
the anti-terrorist unit of Northern Irelands
police had agents and informers inside the
UDA involved in the killing.
1913 WAS a very interesting year, the last
year of peace before war changed the world
irrevocably. You could almost say it was the
day before yesterday when the 19th century
ended and modern times began.
Some of the age-old beliefs received
wisdoms wee looking shaky. Take attitudes
to women, for example: in Britain we all know
about the suffragists and the Pankhursts, but
the USA. had Inez Milholland whose brief
meteoric rise to fame climaxed in 1913.
That year, she led the womens suffrage
parade in Washington DC. A startlingly
beautiful fgure she cut, dressed all in white
mounted on a superb white horse named
Gray Dawn. She married in July and for three
years spearheaded the womens movement
till she was stricken with pernicious anaemia
and died in 1916.
Her last public words were, Mr President,
how long must women wait for liberty? That
wasnt to be until 1920 when all American
women were enfranchised though they
had had the vote for a time in some states,
Wyoming for example, since 1869. The UK
only started the process in 1918.
HORSE
If a horse is associated with Inez, then
the same holds true of another woman who
was fatally injured beneath the hooves of
another one in the Derby on June 4, 1913.
Emily Davison, a British suffragette, ran out in
front of the Kings horse at Tattenham Corner
and suffered a fractured skull from which she
died four days later.
Contrary to what youd expect, Davison
was not a young woman, having been born
in 1871 but she was highly educated, with a
frst-class degree in literature from London
University. Her degree had been earned
at Oxford but Oxbridge would not award
degrees to women. She was a seasoned
campaigner for womens rights: in prison
nine times where she had been force-fed.
She famously hid in the House of Commons
on the night of the 1911 National Census
so that she could write her address as The
House of Parliament.
SPECULATION
Speculation remains around her intentions
that Derby day. Among her possessions, she
had a return railway ticket, a ticket to a suf-
fragette dance that evening and a couple of
suffragette fags. She was also booked to go
on a holiday a few days after the race. Many
think that she was planning to affx a fag to
the Kings horse not seeking martyrdom.
The jockey involved was Herbert Jones. He
was mildly concussed but for the rest of his
life he reported he was haunted by that poor
womans face, At Emmeline Pankhursts
funeral 15 years later, he laid a wreath to
do honour to the memory of (Pankhurst)
and (Davison). In 1951 he was found dead
in his gas-flled kitchen.
On a brighter note, transport made some
progressive steps. The worlds largest railway
station New Yorks Grand Central having
been rebuilt was re-opened on February 1.
The frst successful parachute jump by
Adolphe Pegoud took place over France. Per-
haps emboldened by this success later in the
year, the aviator Roland Garros became the
frst man to fy across the Mediterranean.
INVENTED
Garros eventually had a Parisian tennis
stadium named after him. He invented the
forward-fring gun on an airplane, then used
it to shoot down fve enemy planes in World
War 1 for which he earned the title Ace.
Sadly, he was on the receiving end in 1918,
dying in aerial combat himself.
In December, the Ford Motor Company
introduced the first
movi ng assembl y
line, reducing the
time taken to build a
car from 12 hours
to 2 hours 40 min-
utes. It was not the
first assembly line
in the world but its
success with Ford
started an era of
mass-production.
Back in the States, the frst automobile
road across the country was fnished and
dedicated. Then it was the Lincoln Highway
from New York to San Francisco. Nowadays
it is mainly US Route 30. Originally it was
3,389 miles long and ran across 13 states.
Its centenary will be celebrated this year with
travellers setting out simultaneously from ei-
ther end and meeting in the middle Kearney,
Nebraska where you can assemble with all
the other petrol heads at the Great Platte River
Museum on July1. (Oh, and dont forget to
send me a card!)
Though the Lincoln Highway follows the
road through Nevada where the Donner
Party met their dreadful fate in 1846, it is
still 80 miles from Death Valley where on
July 10, 1913, the highest temperature ever
recorded on earth was logged: 134 degrees
Fahrenheit.
WEATHER
Whilst Im on the subject of weather and
with Sandy fresh in all our minds, perhaps
here is where we should remember the Great
Lakes Storm of 1913, aka The Big Blow, the
Freshwater Fury and the White Hurricane.
This November gale devastated the Great
Lakes Basin and Ontario for four terrible

100-YEARS AGO
1913 The Day Before Yesterday
November days. Winds of up to 90mph and
35 feet waves caused the deaths of over 250
people and sank a score of ships.
Worst hit was Lake Huron which recorded
24 inches of snow to add to the general
misery. As with all natural disasters the scale
of the damage led to great improvements in
maritime safety and storm warnings. In that
sense it was a very modern catastrophe.
A few names stand out from that year.
Pancho Villa led the Mexican revolution. Igor
Stravinskys ballet Rites of Spring caused
a classical music riot when it was staged
in Paris. President Woodrow Wilson trig-
gered the explosion of the Gamboa Dyke by
pressing a telegraph key in the White House.
The explosion blew away the last remaining
stretch of land stopping the Panama Canal
from joining the Atlantic and the Pacifc.
Thats all there is to it. Gamboa is busted,
said the President.
ENDED
The year ended with a beautiful woman go-
ing back to where she belonged: Italy returned
the Mona Lisa to France. It had been stolen
from the Louvre in 1911, by Vincenzo Perug-
gia who hid in a broom cupboard till everyone
went home. He then stuck her under his coat
and simply vanished into the night.
He believed that the painting belonged in
an Italian art gallery and hung onto it for two
years before being arrested for trying to sell
it to the Uffzi in Florence. It was exhibited all
over Italy before return to France. Peruggia
served six months in jail for the theft.
Finally, heres one for those who like
puzzles:

I wish you all a happy and healthy 2013.

Starbucks Promises
To Pay More UK Tax
STARBUCKS bowed to mounting pres-
sure over its tax affairs in Britain and re-
vealed last month that it would pay about
10m in each of the next two years.
Having been slammed by the coun-
trys lawmakers of immorally avoiding
tax, Starbucks UK managing director
Kris Engskov said the frm had agreed to
pay more than required by law.
With the backdrop of these diffcult
times, in the area of tax, our customers
clearly expect us to do more, he told the
London Chamber of Commerce.
The Seattle-based coffee company
has 700 British outlets, but has paid
just 8.6m in corporation tax in 14
years. Starbucks Corp says this is due
to a process involving paying royalties
to its European headquarters in the
Netherlands.
The company hasnt done anything
illegal. Companies operating in Europe
can base themselves in any of the 27 Eu-
ropean Union nations, allowing them to
take advantage of a particular countrys
low tax rates.
Last month, Parliaments Public
Accounts Committee criticized multina-
tionals such as Starbucks, Amazon and
Google for using the letter of tax laws
both nationally and internationally to im-
morally minimize their tax obligations.
Starbucks, which also has been the
target of demonstrations by the protest
group UK Uncut, announced that it was
reviewing its tax approach.
Engskov said the company was pro-
posing to pay a signifcant amount of
corporation tax dur-
ing 2013 and 2014
regardless of whether
our company is prof-
itable during these
years.
He estimated that
woul d amount to
somewhere in the
range of 10m in
each of the next two
years.
Labour lawmaker
Margaret Hodge,
who chaired the par-
liamentary commit-
tee, said Starbucks
change of heart was
proof that people
power works.
Earlier this week,
UK Treasury chief
George Os borne
earmarked an extra

als.
BRITAIN has renamed a large chunk of
icy waste in honor of Queen Elizabeth II.
The Foreign Office announced last
month that a 169,000-sq mile section of
the British Antarctic Territory has been
renamed Queen Elizabeth Land to mark the
monarchs 60 years on the throne.
The announcement was made as the
86-year-old queen visited the Foreign Of-
fce in London December 18. It was the
last offcial engagement of her Diamond
Jubilee year.
Foreign Secretary William Hague said
that to be able to recognize the UKs
commitment to Antarctica with a perma-
nent association with Her Majesty is a
great honor.
Queen Elizabeth Land, which is twice
the size of the United Kingdom, covers
about a third of the Antarctic territory
claimed by Britain in 1908.
The territory has no permanent popula-
tion but is home to three research stations
run by the British Antarctic Survey.
Several other countries, including Nor-
way and New Zealand, claim other parts
of the uninhabited continent, which is
regulated by an international treaty.
Government Renames Chunk
Of Antarctic In Honor Of Queen
The new name will feature on British
maps, but other countries will decide for
themselves whether to use it.
The queen also attended a Cabinet meet-
ing last month, and was presented with 60
placemats as a gift from the government.
What do you get the woman who has
everything? Britains Royal Academy of
Arts has presented Queen Elizabeth II with
works by some of the countrys leading
artists to mark the monarchs 60 years on
the throne.
The 97 works on paper include a royal
portrait by Tracey Emin, a celebratory
Diamond Jubilee drawing done on an
iPad by David Hockney and pieces by
Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor and
Grayson Perry.
All the artists are members of the Royal
Academy, the elite artistic society founded
in 1768.
The artworks will go on public display
at Buckingham Palace next year.
Unemployment Down By
Biggest Amount Since 2001
OFFICIAL DATA shows that unemploy-
ment in the United Kingdom dropped to
7.8 percent in the three months to October
as the number of jobless fell by its largest
amount since 2001.
The Offce for National Statistics said
last month that the fall from the previous
quarters eight percent came as 82,000
people came off the unemployment regis-
ter, which stands at 2.51 million.
The improvement came at a time Britain
emerged from a nine-month recession. In
the third quarter of the year, the British
economy grew by a quarterly rate of 1
percent.
The agency also says that total pay
growth continued to lag infation, rising
1.8 percent compared to a year earlier.
Consumer price infation in October was
2.7 percent.
UK Catholics Urged
To Lobby Against
Gay Marriage
THE LEADER of Roman Catholics in Eng-
land and Wales has urged followers to
write to their representatives in Parliament
to oppose the governments plans to allow
gay marriage.
In a letter read to congregations
last month, Archbishop Vincent Nichols
called for Catholics to express their views
clearly, calmly and forcefully.
Nichols says he is concerned about
how a change in the law would affect what
children are taught about marriage.
He says he wants members of Parlia-
ment to defend, not change, the bond of
man and woman in marriage as the essen-
tial element of the vision of the family.
Prime Minister David Camerons
Conservative-led government plans to
introduce legislation this month to allow
gay marriages. Recent opinion polls sug-
gest a large majority of the public supports
the change.

QUOTE of the month: Trust me. Phil
Mitchell
Yes, THAT Phil Mitchell. But frst... The
Masoods have trust issues of their own.
While everyone thinks that Syed is saving
the family business, he actually raids the
business piggy bank and uses the money to
cover his own losses instead of paying the
mortgage. He also cheats on Christian (who,
with Zainab, is busy planning their wedding),
having a fing with a pretty boy who seduces
him, promises him in on a big business deal,
then feeces him out of 6K cash. Who, you
might ask, is dumb enough to invest cash
with a stranger they met in a club? Syed,
thats who. Christian and doubting Syed do
get married but the bayliffs come to shutter
the Arjee Bargee during their reception, and
they break up shortly after the honeymoon.
Masood also tosses Zainab out, furious that
she trusted Syed again (turns out shed
given him the 6K from Tamwars education
account, behind Masoods back, so they are
left broke. Again.)
Janine and Michael argue and he manipu-
lates her into thinking that she will damage
her baby just by being her Mum. Gutted,
Janine disappears, and leaves the baby (who
Michael wants nothing to do with) behind.
Oh, and he then fnds out she freezes all their
bank accounts when she goes. He wanted rid
of her but not like this Kat confesses her
trangressions to angry and gutted Alfe, who
tries to forgive. They want to make a go of it
so they go off on holiday and while theyre
away, Phil takes over the Vic and installs
Roxy as manager
Across the Square Ian continues to
slowly recover from his breakdown (though
whenever he gets too stressed out, like when
Phil tries to get him to do something he
starts scratching, scratching, scratching)
Denise has a fing with Fatboy Joey Bran-
ning has still got his shoes under Lucys bed,
but it seems that his frst cousin Lauren has a
weird revulsion/attraction too him and wants
to break them up. She insists that Whitney tell
Lucy that Joey kissed her and then the two set
to convince her to toss him out. He had one
foot out the door anyway, and now it seems
has set his sights on Lauren
Elsewhere in Branningville Tanya is
busy planning her wedding/remarriage to
Max... Abi decides shes back with Jay
(regardless of the charges)... Carol returns to
prep the house for Biancas return, ridding it
of Dereks dodgy gear and counterfeit notes.
But Derek is a man of secrets (all bitter) and in
his lock box he has placed a letter addressed
to Carol, that he has stolen out of the post.
Its from David Wicks, asking her to just say
the word and hell come running. Another
reminder of why this love is long lost. If only
hed sent her a text
Unlike Michael, Lola adores her baby and is
trying her best but shes got the Social breath-
ing down her neck. Just when she seems to
be approaching the clear, hoodies from her
past turn up in the Square bullying her and
set her up, making a false assault report with
the Old Bill and they come to arrest her and
take Lexi away. Even though the charges are
dropped, Lexi remains in care with her getting
only short visits with her. Phil has no interest in
helping Lola and Billy with The Social, refusing
their desperate pleas for intervention from his
lawyers. After a visit, as the social workers are
trying to snatch her back, Lola in desperation,
blurts out that Lexi is Bens baby. At frst Phil
still refuses to help, then he decides to try
help only if its on his terms. His terms being
that he is seeking custody for himself, as the
grandfather. Behind Lolas back Billy agrees,
only because he is desperate to keep Lexi out
of care the care that he, his son and Lola
all grew up in. Phil asks Sharon (whos now
all loved up with Jack) to pretend to be his
fance so he passes the home inspection. At
frst Lola is reluctant to sign the papers, but
Phil says trust me and so unaware of Phils
designs, she signs, thinking it will get her her
baby back. Someone needs to introduce poor
Lola to Lisa

JUST WHEN you think crazy Kirsty cant get
any worse, she only goes and does. First off,
poor Fiz gets her sewing machine tangled
when it stops working at Underworld. Julie
turns the machine off at the mains as Fiz tries
to sort the machine out and just as shes do-
ing that, Kirsty turns the machine back on,
sewing Fizs thumb to a knicker gusset. Ouch.
And then I almost couldnt bear to watch as
Kirsty kicked and punched Tyrone across
their living room foor. It doesnt take much
to set Kirsty off and this time it was texts and
calls from Fiz, trying to support Tyrone, that
made Kirsty see red. She locked Tyrone in
the house with baby Ruby and then when she
came home from work, she beat him up all
over again. Tyrone tries to do a runner with
Ruby but when Fiz fnds out she convinces
him to stay, dreadful though it is, with crazy
Kirsty at home. Fiz goes to see her solicitor
who advises Tyrone to marry crazy Kirsty
so that he can get legal custody of Ruby
and then divorce Kirsty. It seems a mad idea
to me but then Im neither a solicitor nor a
soap writer.
Sophies home from hospital and walking
on crutches with help from physio Jenna.
Sophie likes physio Jenna, the problem is, so
does Sophies dad Kevin. Its a love triangle
with a difference, thats for sure. Even Lloyd
cant believe his eyes when he spots whats
going on in the pub: Is Kevin Webster chat-
ting up my daughter?
Nick proposes to Leanne again and this
time she says yes. They have an engagement
bash in the Bistro but David and Kylie stay
at home instead, shouting at each other on
the sofa because David wants a baby and
Kylie doesnt.
Rita gives Dennis his own ATM card this
month. She shows him how to use it after he
admits he hasnt used one before. But Dennis
goes slap happy with Ritas plastic and gets
drunk in the Rovers, buying rounds he cant
afford from Ritas bank account. Shes not
best pleased, especially when her card gets
declined in the Bistro when she tries to pay for
a meal with Emily. Dennis knows hes done
wrong so decides to put things right and gets
a job as a Traffc Management Operative with
Weatherfeld Council. Thats a lollipop man,
to you and me.
Over at the Bistro was left to Gail to clear
up after Lewis who, very carefully, lay down
on the foor then threw a tray of glasses all
over, smashing them all. Gail rushed to his
aid, took him home to the sofa and nurses
his poorly soul better. Every time the camera
pans to Lewis face, you expect him to be
twirling a moustache he doesnt have and
giving an evil laugh. Gails loving having
someone to smother with love and Lewis is
happy when he searches for and fnds her
bank statements. What he does next with
them will be anyones guess.
News of Tinas pregnancy spreads after
Norris blurts it, on purpose and against Ritas
advice, to everyone in the pub. Of course,
everyone assumes the baby is Tommys and
hes as fed up with the surrogacy storyline
as the rest of us are, so he drinks the pints
that are being bought for him and gets mer-
rily drunk, which is probably the best way to
handle such a dull storyline.

SO, HAPPY New Year! As I write this, the
fscal cliff is looming and future tax rates are
a major topic of conversation. I have every
confdence this will be resolved, either before
or just after the beginning of January, and that
overall it wont make too much difference to
most of us.
Amongst all the various options on offer,
one thing you can be sure of there will be
no breaks for people with foreign income
and/or assets. As Ive mentioned over the
past year, more and more information will
be fnding a way to the IRS, who will then be
at liberty to use it to check it off against US
tax return entries.
One of my recommendations for 2013
would be to consider moving money and
investments to the US. I suggest this, not
because of any particular knowledge of the
markets or investment strategy, but because
I think many people remain with the known
investment in the UK, rather than face the
unknown here. US investment personnel can
be convincing, if rather more assertive than
we are used to, which can be off-putting as
well as inducing fears that one is being taken
for a ride.
New Year, New Tax Resolutions
OPTIONS
I have felt like this, but I have decided the
some day when I am going to investigate
the options here and try (wet-towel-on-the-
head time) to make sense of them has to be
now. If you are planning to return to live in
the UK at some point, this will probably not
be something you want to do, but if you are
likely to remain in the US, transferring your
money here will relieve all the issues of fling
foreign asset forms.
I am often asked questions about making
international bank transfers. The US Treasury
wants to know about these transfers, whether
they are inward or outward, but it will obtain
the information needed from the banks in-
volved. When a bank asks you why you are
making a transfer, they are not personally that
interested! They will be passing the informa-
tion on to Uncle Sam! The limit for notifcation
purposes is generally $10,000, but banks will
also look for associated transactions, so a
number of transfers at just below the limit
will also be picked up.
UK TAX
My second piece of advice regarding taxes
for 2013 concerns the payment of UK tax. If
you are someone who pays UK tax, rather
than simply having it deducted from some
investments, I strongly suggest you keep
all records showing the amounts involved,
Claiming foreign tax credit has a number of
conditions not surprisingly, one of them is
that you can substantiate the payment. It can
be diffcult to obtain receipts from HMRC,
so it is worth keeping the awful statements
the HMRC computer produces if nothing
else, they will meet this purpose! As you
would expect, the more foreign tax credit
you are claiming, the more important this is.
I believe this is an area the IRS will be looking
at much more closely in the coming years.
After all, it may give them the opportunity to
deny the credit!
And on that cheery note, Ill end as I
began, offering you every good wish for a
happy 2013!
2012 has been very good for Mary-Heather
Styles she celebrated a 0 birthday, grew
her business and got married! But, ever the
optimist, she is looking forward to the chal-
lenges of 2013 which she hopes will include
giving advice on international tax issues to
people who contact her at (602) 845-1420 or
at mhstyles@transatlantictax.com.
THE CHURCH of England has taken a
tentative step toward trying again to get
its governing General Synod to approve
female bishops.
The church said last month the Arch-
bishops Council agreed that the issue
needed to be resolved as a matter of
urgency and should be restarted when the
General Synod next meets in July.
A brief statement from the 19-member
council did not indicate when another vote
could be taken. The council recommended
that all the bishops, at their meeting next
month, put in place a clear process for
discussions in the new year with a view
to bringing legislative proposals before
the Synod in July.
Church legislation authorizing female
bishops failed earlier last month when laity
in the General Synod failed to muster the
necessary two-thirds majority, falling just
Church Of England To Start Again On Female Bishops
six votes short.
Prime Minister David Cameron has
expressed his disappointment and urged
the church to get on with it.
DISCRIMINATION
He said it was a matter for the church
to resolve, but some lawmakers have sug-
gested forcing the issue by abolishing the
churchs exemption from the law against
gender discrimination.
Much of the debate in the General
Synod was about provisions for church
members who believe only men can be
priests and bishops, and do not want to
be supervised by a female bishop. A com-
promise proposal to respect the views of
opponents was opposed by some people on
both sides of the debate.
The Times newspaper has reported that
William Fittall, the secretary general of the
Synod, has proposed that the next vote be
on a simpler measure, which simply says
yes or no to allowing women to be conse-
crated as bishops without any provision
for opponents.
The Church of England has refused to
confrm or deny that report.

The Jowett Jupiter
WELL, ITS been well over seven years since
I started writing this column about Great Brit-
ish Cars and during this time I have written
about some history on every major British
car maker past and present. Or so I thought.
In fact, I missed one, not purposely I assure
you, as this company produced many very
fne motor cars. I missed it simply because
it slipped my mind, or was it perhaps that its
roots were in a very unusual place for car
manufacturing.
Most car makers, you see, started out
in the midlands for logistical purposes as
their products could be delivered equally
north or south of the country. However, this
company started out up north and remained
there throughout their manufacturing life;
this meant that the majority of their products
would need to be delivered south of their
factory. The place was the Yorkshire City of
Bradford and the company was Jowett.
Jowett was founded in 1901 by brothers
Benjamin and William Jowett and Arthur
V Lamb. The siblings were initially in the
cycle business, yet soon started produc-
ing V-twin engines for driving machinery.
These engines soon found their way into
other makes of cars for replacements. The
brothers developed their frst car in 1906,
but as the company was very busy with the
engine part of the business plus the lack of
space in their facility, this frst car didnt go
into production until 1910. By this time their
frst car had undergone over 25,000 miles of
exhaustive tests and trials. It turned out that
the Bradford area was the perfect location
for the production of the frst Jowett motor
cars as these cars could be described as
Englands frst real light car.
The car had been designed specifcally
for the surrounding area of Bradford and its
heather moors and rolling hills. The engine
and gearbox were specifcally designed for a
light car and made largely of aluminum. Its
low speed torque and gear ratios were ideally
suited to the hills about Bradford and York-
shires terrain where poor roads provided little
use for a high top speed or quick acceleration.
Construction of the engine and the rest of the
car were robust. Benjamin Jowett held that
the light car class was suffering from engines
from cycle-cars that possessed suffcient
power but were subject to rapid deterioration
because of inadequate bearing surfaces, or
engines from larger cars too heavy for the
rest of the cars structure leading to a different
set of troubles.
These first production cars quickly
became popular using an 816cc fat twin
water-cooled engine of 6.4hp and a three-
speed gearbox with tiller steering. The light
car and engine were perfectly suited for
negotiating the landscape of the Yorkshire
Dales and the narrow twisting roads in the
area. It was a niche market that Britains other
car makers had either not discovered or failed
to capitalise upon.
Car production ceased during the WWI
years as the Jowett Company was tasked
with munitions production until 1919 when
motor car design and production resumed.
That same year, a new works site was
bought at Springfeld, Bradford Road, Idle,
outside Bradford it was the site of a disused
quarry. Car making started in the new factory
in 1920, and the frst vehicle was the Jowett
Seven using an enlarged version of the pre-
war fat twin. First, it was enlarged to 831cc,
then to 907cc in 1921 when the claim to 8hp
was dropped from advertising. Thereafter, all
Jowetts were Sevens until the introduction
of the four-cylinder engine in 1936. This
engine developed its maximum torque at
low revs and was soon famed for its pulling
power, reliability and economy. Business in
the period between the wars for the Jowett
motor car company was booming, and this
lead to several newer models being produced.
The Jowett motor cars were now suited for
all types of terrain throughout Britain and sold
well up and down the country, but they were
Yorkshires cars and many people there were
faithful to the Marque.
The post WWII years started well for the
company with the introduction of the Jowett
Javelin, a streamlined saloon with excellent
handling characteristics capable of 80mph.
The success of the Javelin which sold well
throughout Britain prompted the design of a
sports car, the famous Jowett Jupiter. With
the combined production of the Javelins,
Jupiters and Bedford vans, production levels
had risen to a peak that Jowett had never
attempted before.
Unfortunately, it turned out that the tim-
ing of Jowetts success was to become a
disaster. As the company kept up with the
demand, Javelin and Bradford body produc-
tion was out-sourced to Briggs Motor Bodies
who built a new plant in Doncaster. Briggs
supplied the bodies fully trimmed and ready
to be applied to the mechanicals. The Jupiters
were always built in-house at Idle.
Prior to 1953 purchase tax on new cars
was at 66.3 percent, this was at a temporary
level due to the cost of the war. Then, on
April 15, 1953 this tax rate was lowered to
50 percent, and this move triggered a surge
in demand for new cars. This should have
been good for business for the Jowett motor
company, but it didnt turn out that way, as
the Ford motor company bought the Briggs
Motor Bodies company, the sole suppliers of
the Jowett vehicle bodies. The Briggs facility
was adjacent to the Ford factory in Dagenham
and Ford needed the Briggs Company to
facilitate the demand increase due to the new
car purchase tax reduction. As it turned out,
just after the purchase, Ford decided that the
Briggs Motor Body company was surplus to
their requirements and sold the company to
Fisher and Ludlow who in turn sold it to the
newly formed British Motor Corporation.
This signalled the end of the line for
Jowett. In 1953 a column appeared in the
Times newspaper stating that Jowett Cars
had run into diffculties that year after the
acquisition of the motor body suppliers
Fisher and Ludlow by BMC was completed in
September 1953. Since the company ceased
manufacturing Javelin and Bradford vehicles
it became impossible to keep the main factory
operating at an economic level.
So the most successful period in Britains
motor car history was not to be for Jowett
motor cars. But for Ford the Jowett Motor
Car Company could today have been a
major player in the car manufacturing busi-
ness. They will live on in memory though;
many famous people drove the great Jowett
Jupiter including MotoGP and F1 champion
John Surtees. The Jowett was truly a great
Yorkshire Motor Car.
Happy Motoring.

The statement said he was briefly
hospitalized last week when it was deter-
mined no more treatment would help him.
Instead, his wish to spend his fnal days at
home were honored.
Over the past few years, Patrick, an
inspiration to generations of astronomers,
fought his way back from many serious
spells of illness and continued to work
and write at a great rate, but this time
his body was too weak to overcome the
infection which set in a few weeks ago,
the statement said.
It was signed by various staff members
and friends, including Queen guitarist
Brian May. May said Moore was irreplace-
able and had stirred millions through his
broadcasts.
Patrick will be mourned by the many
to whom he was a caring uncle, and by all
who loved the delightful wit and clarity of
his writings, or enjoyed his fearlessly ec-
centric persona in public life, May said.
FIRST
In its obituary, the Daily Telegraph
reported that Moore believed he was the
only person to have met the frst man to
fy, Orville Wright, as well as the frst
man in space, Russian Yuri Gagarin, and
the frst man on the moon, the late Neil
Armstrong.
Moore, who received a knighthood in
2001, had recently celebrated the 55th an-
niversary of his program. He only missed
one episode, because of an illness caused
by food poisoning. He was known for his
trademark monocle and his occasional xy-
lophone performances and his frequently
professed love of cats.
He wrote dozens of books using a 1908
typewriter he received as a gift when he
was 8.
Moore had long expressed an interest
in traveling into space, but said he wasnt
medically ft to do so he said he was
so large that a special rocket would be
needed.
Anglican Leader Rowan
Williams Steps Down
THE HEAD of the Church of England is
leaving offce after a decade as the spiritual
leader of the worlds 80 million-strong
Anglican Communion.
Rowan Williams, the 104th Archbishop
of Canterbury, will be replaced by 56-year-
old former oil executive Justin Welby, the
Bishop of Durham.
The ten years in which the 62-year-old
Williams held offce saw him struggling to
maintain unity within the Anglican Com-
munion amid bitter disagreements over
female bishops and church teachings on
gay relationships.
Williams has been praised for engaging
with church critics and atheists including
Richard Dawkins, but he has also raised
eyebrows with his opinions on controver-
sial issues including the war in Iraq and
Sharia law.
Williams stepped down to start a new
role as Master of Cambridge Universitys
Magdalene College.
UK Police Say They
Wont Charge Hacker
BRITISH authorities say theyve opted not
to charge a computer hacker who waged a
decade-long struggle to avoid trial in the
US for breaking into military computers.
Prosecutors had to decide whether
Gary McKinnon should be tried in Britain
over alleged breaches of US military and
NASA networks, after he successfully
fought extradition to the US Prosecutors
said last month the appropriate place for
trial would have been the US. That means
no further charges will be leveled.
The 46-year-old, who has been diag-
nosed with Aspergers Syndrome, was
accused of one of the largest ever breaches
of military networks, carried out soon after
the September 11 attacks.
In October, the British government
ruled that McKinnon was unft to face
charges in the US

IN HONOUR of Robbie Burns night events
that will be going on, thought I would
feature a really Scottish favourite that is
often served. Originally it contained beef
as well as chicken, so it could be included
if you like. As usual with most of my soup
I like to use the crock pot, it makes things
so tender, and you can make it up ahead
of time. Nowadays prunes are called dried
plums, which they are, but why the name
needs to be changed I have no idea!
Hope you enjoy my version
Cock a Leekie Soup
2 Tbsp butter
About 1 lb chicken breast pieces
1 lb leeks, trimmed
2 cups good chicken stock
1 bouquet garni
Salt and pepper
6 prunes, stoned and halved
fresh parsley sprigs to garnish
Melt the butter in a large saucepan
and fry chicken quickly until golden on
all sides
Cut the white part of the leek into four
length ways and chop into one inch pieces
reserving the green parts Wash well. Add
the white parts to the pan and fry about
fve minutes or until soft. Add the stock
and bouquet garni and season to taste.
bring to the boil and simmer for 30 minutes
or until the chicken is tender. Shred the
reserved part of the leeks then add to the
pan with the prunes. Simmer for a further
few minutes
To serve, remove the chicken and
discard the skin and bones, and cut into
pieces. Put the chicken into the serving
tureen or bowl, and pour over the soup.
Garnish with the parsley Yield four serv-

Census: UK Getting Less Religious, More Diverse
By Robert Barr
TREASURY chief George Osborne said
December 5 that the recovery of the UK
economy is taking longer than he had
hoped and warned more spending cuts
will be needed to get public finances
under control.
With official growth forecasts cut,
Osborne had little room for maneuver
but said he was trimming departmental
spending to generate more investment in
infrastructure.
It has taken time, but the British econo-
my is healing, Osborne told the House of
Commons, though the latest estimate from
the independent Offce for Budget Respon-
sibility forecasts a 0.2 percent contraction
in the economy this year.
In his scheduled update to budget poli-
cies, Osborne essentially stuck to his plan
of cutting government defcits to promote
recovery. But he did accept to increase
investments to stimulate employment and
demand, as called for by the opposition
Labour Party.
Osborne said the paltry recovery in the
UK and a recession in the 17 European
Union countries that use the euro will mean
Britains economy would only grow by
1.2 percent next year, down from the two
percent it predicted in March.
Its not the rest of the worlds fault, it
is your policies which have failed, said Ed
Balls, speaking for the Labour Party.
TARGET
Osborne confrmed that his target for
public sector debt to start dropping as a
percentage of GDP by 2015-2016 has also
been pushed back a year.
As a result of the revised forecasts, gov-
ernment spending will be cut a further one
percent next year and two percent the year
after. As well as spending cuts, Osborne
also announced a cut in tax relief on the
pensions of higher-rate tax payers and a
cap on welfare payments.
The taxation and spending measures
announced last month were forecast to
yield an additional 3.9bn to government
income this year. Some 3.5bn of that sum
is expected from a one-time auction of 4G
mobile telecoms licenses.
Osborne announced that the govern-
ment would crack down on tax avoidance,
increase infrastructure investment by 17
percent, raise tax deductions for capital
investment by businesses 10-fold and cut
corporation tax to from the current 22
percent to 21 percent in 2014-15. Osborne
said this compares with corporation tax of
40 percent in the US, 33 percent in France
and 29 percent in Germany.
IMPACT
Economists noted the investment
projects would help to create jobs, though
some suggested the overall impact on the
economy would be negligible.
Toby Ryland at HW Fisher & Co. char-
tered accountants said Osborne was sup-
porting the corporate sector at the expense
of ordinary taxpayers. The reduction in
corporation tax is being funded through
below-infation increases in (personal) tax
bands and the restriction of pension tax
relief, he said.
Households were promised an increase
in the personal exemption from income
tax and, for the elderly, a 2.5 percent
boost in the basic state pension to 110.15
a week.
Banks were excluded from the lower
corporation tax, and the government is
increasing the Bank Levy a tax on the
balance sheets of banks to 0.13 percent
to keep annual revenue at 2.5bn.
The Treasury also estimates that it will
be able to recoup up to 5bn in lost tax
by 2015-16 thanks to a new agreement
with Swiss banking
authorities.
Osborne also an-
nounced several capital
investment projects in-
cluding tax incentives
to promote the pro-
duction of shale gas.
At the same time, the
Department of Energy
and Climate Change
announced plans to
build more gas-fired
generating plants to replace aging coal,
nuclear and gas plants. A 1bn loan was
also announced to extend the London tube
network.
OUTLOOK
While the UKs safe-haven status still
looks secure, todays statement does noth-
ing to alter the poor fscal and economic
outlook, said Vicky Redwood, chief UK
economist at Capital Economics.
Osborne said the government was
considering allowing stocks and shares
ISA (tax-deferred individual savings ac-
counts) in smaller stock markets such as
AIM, which lists smaller companies with
less traded shares.
Flora Maudsley-Barton, director of
Parsonage Financial Planning, said: The
vast majority of investors dont understand
illiquid, but they will do so very quickly
if they go down this route, she said.
Osborne then presented a series of
unpopular measures that not only gave
a tax cut to the wealthiest taxpayers, but
eventually led to embarrassing reversals on
his plans to raise taxes on hot meat pies,
reduce tax relief for charitable donations,
and to go ahead with a hike in the tax on
auto fuels.

CENSUS FIGURES show Britain is more
ethnically diverse and less religious than it
was a decade ago.
In the 2011 census, 86 percent of
residents of England and Wales identi-
fed themselves as white, down from 91.3
percent in 2001.
London is the most diverse place in
the country, with 45.8 percent of the 8.2
million residents classing themselves as
white British.
Thirteen percent of British residents
were born outside the UK of whom half
have come to Britain in the past decade.
Some 59 percent of residents said they
were Christian, compared with 72 percent
in 2001. A quarter said they had no religion,
up from 15 percent a decade earlier.
The fgures released December by the
Offce for National Statistics are based on
data from 26 million households.
Wiggins Voted 2012 BBC
Sports Personality
CYCLIST Bradley Wiggins was voted
BBC Sports Personality of the Year for
2012 last month after winning the Tour de
France and Olympic time trial gold in the
space of 11 days this summer.
What a year to stand on this stage
with the people next to me is incredible,
said Wiggins, who was presented with the
prestigious award by the Duchess of Cam-
bridge and football star David Beckham.
Wiggins is the second cyclist in suc-
cessive years to win the prize, after Mark
Cavendish in 2011 capping another suc-
cessful year for British cycling.
He became the frst Briton to win the
Tour his sports most gruelling race
and then the equal most decorated British
Olympian after capturing gold at the Lon-
don Games for his seventh medal.
Id like to thank my teammates, I
wouldnt be on this stage without them,
the Team Sky rider said.
CONTESTED
Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica
Ennis was runner-up and Olympic and US
Open tennis champion Andy Murray was
third in the hotly contested 59th running
of the event.
Eight other Olympians or Paralympi-
ans including Mo Farah, Chris Hoy and
Ben Ainslie and PGA golf champion
Rory McIlroy were also on the 12-person
shortlist for the award at the end of a stellar
year for British sport.

Ireland To Legislate For Life-Saving Abortions
IRELANDS government says it will
draft a new law spelling out the right
of women to receive abortions in cases
where the pregnancy poses a risk to
their lives including from a womans
own threats to commit suicide.
For two decades, successive govern-
ments have resisted passing any law
in support of a 1992 Supreme Court
judgment that such abortions should be
legal in Ireland.
Catholic conservatives particularly
oppose the suicide-threat justifcation,
arguing it could be used to expand ac-
cess to abortion beyond relatively rare
cases where a pregnancy endangers a
womans life.
Last months announcement follows
international uproar over the October
death of a miscarrying Indian woman
in an Irish hospital.
Her widower said she was denied a
prompt termination because the fetus
had a heartbeat.

Heritage Britian & Ireland a historic
journey through Great Britain and Ireland by
Heritage Handbook Co Ltd.
IT IS a new year. Since you are reading this
column, we have survived the Mayan calen-
dar doom date. Celebrate your survival by
dreaming and planning your next vacation. It
is one thing to review books written by other
people, yet we as individuals you and me
all of us have stories to tell or create with
new adventures.
Let us be the
author of future
books by setting
foot and flight
back to the land
of our parents
and forefathers.
Ti me t o be a
tourist instead
of just worrying
about vi si ti ng
relatives. Dont
get me wrong, I
love my relatives in Ireland and Great Britain
yet after spending three months abroad in
2011 in hopes of reconnecting with cousins,
aunts and uncles, I came to realize that they
are busy with their own circle of friends and
family. We as immigrants are visitors, no
matter how much a part of the auld sod we
think we are. So in saying that, lets create
our own new circle of friends abroad. A
book like Heritage Britain & Ireland gives the
reader over 500 pages flled with pictures and
descriptions of fascinating places to visit.
Find out who said There shall be but one
mistress here and no master. (Hint: It was
a royal response to the Earl of Leicester.) The
joy of travel is to seek out the secrets of other
lands with their landmarks be it manmade
like castles or natures wonder like Giants
Causeway in Northern Ireland. By exploring
the wonders and ways of other people, we
as travellers can compare and contrast their
world to the ways and land we have tempo-
rarily left behind.
Included in the book is a listing of the
World Heritage Sites in the UK. Do you know
what a World Heritage Site is? I didnt, yet
now I do. So here it is A world heritage
site is a historic monument, site or group of
buildings, which has outstanding universal
value. On that list of 26 there are the familiar
like the Tower of London and the Canterbury
Cathedral, St Augustines Abbey and St Mar-
tins Church but other ones like the Derwent
Valley Mills, Saltaire, and New Lanark which
I have no idea about. The Publishers Notes
include jewels and oddities like The Judges
Lodging in Powys, Mid Wales which was
once called the most commodious and
elegant apartments for a judge in all England
and Wales (Lord Chief Justice Campbell,
1855) From the stunningly restored judges
apartments to the dingy servants quarters
below you can explore their gaslit world.
Damp cells remind you of the buildings true
purpose, aling with the vast courtroom where
your imagination in captured by the echoing
trial of William Morgan, local duck thief.
This book is a handy guide to enjoy before,
during and after your travels. It is a tour guide
so there are paid advertisers as well as travel
articles. The guide is divided into the different
countries, cities and counties. The slick print
pages are easy on the inquiring fngers. Oh
yes, I know, someone out there is saying,
There must be an app for that or I can
goggle it. Well books are friends that never
fail us or need a power plug to recharge. The
Heritage Handbook Co Ltd can be contacted
at PO Box 291, Beckenham, Kent BR3 1XL,
UK or email at mail@heritagehandbook.

the Newsnight program, the review found
last month.
The Newsnight investigators got the
story right, Nick Pollard, who led the
review, told journalists following its
publication. They had found clear and
compelling evidence that Jimmy Savile
was a pedophile.
When the rival ITV network broadcast
a similar expose in October about Savile,
who died in 2011 at age 84, the BBC came
under fre for both harboring an alleged se-
rial sex abuser for decades and for killing
its own story about him.
The scandal quickly metastasized,
tainting the reputation of the BBC the
publicly-funded British broadcaster known
worldwide for its news and entertainment
divisions. It also prompted the resignation
of the BBCs brand new director-general,
George Entwistle, and raised questions
about its former leader, Mark Thompson,
who has since become chief executive at
The New York Times.
EMBARRASSING
The BBCs decision to cancel its initial
investigation was particularly embarrass-
ing, since it preceded a glowing tribute
program honoring Saviles career. A host
of misleading and contradictory statements
about the investigation in the weeks that
followed only deepened suspicion that se-
nior executives had tried to bury the story
to protect the corporations reputation.
Pollard cleared the executives of that
the most serious charge, saying that
although the decision to scrap the program
was clearly fawed ... I believe it was
taken in good faith.
Pollard had a harsh verdict on the
BBCs behavior in the aftermath of the
scandal, saying the corporation took more
than a month to get its story straight in
the midst of what he called a complete
breakdown of communication.
HARSH
The review which cost the BBC about
2m had harsh words for several execu-
tives in particular. One of those criticized,
the BBCs Deputy Director of News Steve
Mitchell, announced his resignation as the
report was made public.
The BBC said that other members of
staff still faced disciplinary action or were
being moved to new jobs.
Pollards report does not appear to chal-
lenge Thompsons account of his role in
the scandal, which has disquieted some at
The New York Times. Chris Patten, head of
the BBC Trust, said after the review was
published that he has no reason at all for
disbelieving the former director general.
Meanwhile, the scandal over Savile
continues to draw more arrests. So far eight
suspects have been questioned, the latest
only last month when police said that a
man in his 70s had been detained in con-
nection with the investigation. Police say
Savile is a suspect in 199 crimes recorded
so far, including dozens of cases of rape.
A separate report also published last
month found the BBC had committed a
grave breach of its editorial guidelines
when it aired a Newsnight broadcast last
November wrongly linking a politician to
child sex abuse allegations.
Two additional internal inquiries are
still in the works. One, led by former Ap-
peal Court judge Janet Smith, is investigat-
ing the culture and practices of the BBC
during Saviles tenure there. Another, led
by lawyer Dinah Rose, is examining how
the corporation has handled complaints of
sexual harassment.
CAVALIER
Meanwhile, a group of British lawmak-
ers is accusing the BBC of being cavalier
with taxpayers money by paying 450,000
in severance to its director-general when
he quit after 54 days in the job.
Parliaments Public Accounts Com-
mittee says George Entwistle should not
have been paid the sum, twice what he
was entitled to.
Chris Patten, head of the BBCs gov-
erning trust, said Entwistle was paid off
because the alternative would have been
a lengthy and costly employment tribunal.
But he said the BBC was seeking legal
advice on whether it could get any of the
money back.

Belfast Leaders Decry Petrol-
Bomb Attack On Police
A NORTHERN Ireland lawmaker facing
death threats because of her partys sup-
port for fying the British fag less often
on government buildings has condemned
a petrol-bomb attack on a policewoman
guarding her Belfast offce.
The lone officer wasnt injured
when a 15-strong gang surrounded
her unmarked police car in Protestant
east Belfast, smashed its windows and
tossed a lighted Molotov cocktail into
the back seat. She was keeping watch
on the offce of Naomi Long, who has
been instructed by police to avoid her
home and offce.
Police say they have made no arrests
over last months attack but are treating
it as attempted murder.
Long, who represents east Belfast in
Parliament in London, says Northern
Ireland police are holding the line be-
tween mob rule and the rule of law.

Authorities Arrest
Three In LIBOR
Rate Probe
By Danica Kirka
POLICE arrested three people December
11 as part of their investigation into the
manipulation of a key benchmark interest
rate the frst British arrests in a scandal
thats had global ramifcations.
The three men aged 33, 41 and 47
were not named by officials. Search
warrants were executed at the homes of all
three, who are British nationals working in
the United Kingdom.
The arrests follow an investigation from
Britains Serious Fraud Offce. It opened
its probe in July after Barclays was fned
$435m by American and British agencies
for creating false reports on its borrowing
costs between 2005 and 2009, specifcally
related to the London interbank offered
rate, or LIBOR.
LIBOR is the rate banks use to borrow
from each other and it is critical. The
rate indirectly affects the cost of loans that
people pay when they take out loans such
as when consumers buy a home or car.
MANIPULATING
News that Barclays and likely other
banks were manipulating a rate that
underpins so many fnancial transactions
prompted outrage among British lawmak-
ers. Parliaments Treasury committee
demanded sweeping changes to oversight
of the banking industry and called for a
tightening of laws to make it easier to
prosecute rate-fxing offenses.
The Financial Times has reported that
at least 16 banks including three based
in Britain are under investigation by US
authorities.
But Barclays has been the bank most
closely associated to the scandal, partly be-
cause of its cooperation with authorities. The
scandal that followed forced Bob Diamond
to resign as Barclays chief executive.
THIS MONTH brings about the launch of the
long awaited new UK/USA pension transfer
product AMVE$T from Alexander Beard
Group (ABG). For a number of years now ABG
have operated in California, Texas and New
York looking after a wide and varied client
base of Brit Expats living in these states!
In October last year ABG celebrated 25
years in business and are one of the worlds
leading independent advisers in the feld of
international pensions; interestingly the Group
advises a number of large US Corporations,
Charities and NGOs on their international and
overseas pension plan requirements.
For a number of years ABG have been
working on a legal alternative to the barrier
that the US Internal Revenue Service have put
up against pension transfers coming into the
USA. There have been a number of options
currently available, namely:
Leave the UK pension plan alone but
have the funds managed by a UK authorised
adviser
Use of offshore jurisdiction such as
Gibraltar or Malta under the QROPS rules
Unauthorised back-door transfers
through New Zealand
Both of these options, whilst viable, are
problematic, why?
Because If you leave it in the UK then
the benefts are paid in GB currency and
therefore your spending power could be
affected by the exchange rate; your adviser
is in a different time zone and there are cost
implications
-- -- -- ADVERTORIAL -- -- --
Transferring Your UK
Pension To The USA
If you use an offshore jurisdiction it
may not have a tax treaty with USA and the
funds could be treated as a Passive Foreign
Investment Company (PFIC) and subject to
onerous taxation. Even places such as Malta
which do have a tax treaty will still not be
immune from the new Foreign Account Tax
Compliance Act (FATCA) which means that
tax arising from income and capital growth
year-on-year would be subject to taxation
by the IRS. Offshore QROPS plans are also
expensive to administer
Will you be advised by a properly regu-
lated and authorised fnancial planner?
Unauthorised transfers can be punitively
taxed by HMRC and they will fnd out!
AMVE$T solves all these problems:
Your pension remains under UK rules
(therefore exempt from FATCA)
Your pension funds are invested in US $
funds.(therefore not classed as PFICs)
Funds advised upon and managed by
our FINRA authorised USA based Registered
Investment Advisers in conjunction with one

groups.

Sikh Soldier Wears Turban
On Palace Guard Duty
BRITAINS Ministry of Defense says a Sikh soldier has become the frst guardsman
to parade outside Buckingham Palace while wearing his traditional turban.
Fifty family members were on hand December 11 as Guardsman Jatinderpal
Singh Bhullar as he took part in the changing of the guard at the London home of
the Queen.
Bhullar, a 25-year-old
soldier with the Scots
Guards regi ment , was
quoted by Britains Press
Association as saying:
Conducting public duties
while being a practicing
Sikh and wearing my turban
is a great honor for me.
Other Sikhs have taken
part in guarding the queens
palace, but they wore tradi-
tional bearskin hats rather
than turbans.
Publicist Max
Clifford Arrested
In Savile Sex Case
By Gregory Katz
FOR YEARS, the affable, white-haired
Max Clifford has been the go to guy for
British celebrities seeking help with public
relations fascos. Now it is Clifford who
may need help: He was arrested last month
as part of a wide-ranging UK inquiry into
sex abuse.
Clifford called the allegations damag-
ing and totally untrue as he left a London
police station to a furry of photographer
fashbulbs.
News of the arrest shocked Britains
entertainment and media communities;
Clifford has long been seen as a sage ad-
viser with an uncanny ability to shape the
news in his clients favor.
It is too early to judge the impact of the
December 6 arrest on Cliffords formida-
ble reputation. Few details were available,
and it is not clear if the 69-year-old will be
charged with any offenses.
Police did not name Clifford, as is
customary, but his lawyer, Charlotte Har-
ris, confrmed his arrest, which had been
widely reported in the British media. She
said he was cooperating with detectives.
The police statement does not link the
arrest to child sex abuse. It was not clear
what Clifford was being questioned about,
and other people arrested as part of Opera-
tion Yewtree have not been charged with
criminal offenses.
Clifford said the allegations date back
to 1977, but he declined to go into further
detail after giving a brief statement outside
the police station where he had been ques-
tioned and released on bail.
Anyone who really knew me all those
years ago and those who have known me
since will have no doubt that I would never
act in the way I have today been accused,
he said, adding that the allegations were
very distressing to him and his family.
Cliffords clients include entertainment
mogul Simon Cowell, former Harrods
owner Mohamed al-Fayed, and the late
reality TV star Jade Goody, as well as
dozens of ordinary people who found
themselves at the vortex of the news and
who sought to sell their stories to the press,
which is a common, and lucrative, practice
in Britain. In 1994 Clifford represented OJ
Simpson following his murder trial acquit-
tal of his wife.
To date, six people have been arrested
in the investigation of the alleged abuse.
No one has been charged.
British media have identifed the sus-
pects as including comedian Freddie Starr
and former glam rock star Gary Glitter, and
BBC host and commentator Stuart Hall.

India, winning their frst Test series on the
sub-continent in 27 years prevailing 2-1 in
the four match series. After losing the First

digressions were forgiven and he was
brought back for the second Test at Mumbai,
where his run total of 186, aided England
to a ten wicket victory. India 327 and 142.
England 413 (Alistair Cook 122) and 58-0 at
close. At Kolkata in the third Test, Englands
confdence persisted and they won by seven
wickets. England 523 (Alistair Cook 196) and
41-3 declared. India 316 and 347. The fourth
and fnal Test at Nagpur was drawn, thus
giving England the series. England 330 and
352(Jonathan Trott 141, Ian Bell 116)-4 at

South Africans Win Down-Under

Smith 120) and 248 (Francois Duplessis

ies skipper Rick Ponting, announced his
retirement from Test cricket at the closure
of the three match series with South Africa.

appearances for his country, scored over
13,000 Test runs and knocked some 71 Test
centuries. The third and fnal Test at Perth,
saw the South Africans win by 309 runs and
the series 1-0. South Africa 225 and 569

Boxing: Price Batters Skelton,
Cricketer Wins,Fury Unbeaten
Loads of pugilistic aggression the frst
weekend of December, where Liverpudlian
David Price, the unbeaten British and Com-
monwealth heavyweight champion, retained
his crown with a second round knockout of
Matt Skelton at Aintree. The 45-year-old
Skelton (28-8), a former British and Euro-
pean champion came under a barrage of
blows by the six foot eight inch
Price (15-0) and tumbled to the
canvas after a vicious attack
that he never recovered from
At Manchester, former England
Test skipper Andrew Flintoff,
commenced a new career as
a heavyweight boxer beating
Richard Dawson in a four round
contest. The man from Okla-
homa (2-1) had the 34-year-old Flintoff on the
canvas in the second, but the man who aided
England to win the Ashes against Australia
in 2009, persisted for a points decision
Former British & Commonwealth champion
Tyson Fury, pushed his unbeaten record to
20-0, after a decision over Kevin Johnson in
Belfast. The Atlanta resident (28-3-1) took the
fght at just three weeks notice, and three
years ago lost to Vitali Klitscho after going
the whole twelve rounds. Fury was made
to earn his victory, against a man who has
never been knocked down before, stubbornly
thwarting the Manchester fghters efforts to
get him canvas bound.
The following weekend, Northern Irelander
Brian Magee fought an uphill battle against
Mikkel Kessler, in the frst defence of his
WBA world super-middleweight crown, at
Herning, Denmark. Kessler (45-2) stopped
the 37-year-old Magee (36-5-1) in the third
round, after sending the Lisburn Irishman to
the canvas twice in the second round. The
Danes only defeats have been to Brits, Joe
Calzaghe and Karl Froch At Las Vegas, the
fourth match-up between Juan Manuel Mar-
quez (55-6-1) and Manny Pacquiao (54-4-2)
saw the Mexican knock out Pacquiao cold in
the sixth round. Previously, the Philipino had
beaten Marquez twice and the other contest
had been drawn.
Amir Khan Wins In Los Angeles
Up and coming super-middleweight
George Groves scored a unanimous deci-
sion over the highly experienced veteran
Glen Johnson (51-18-2) at Londons ExCel
Arena, December 15. The 24-year-old
Londoner pushed his record to 16-0, over
the Jamaican from South Florida, who has
chalked up victories over Antonio Carver and
Roy Jones Jr, in an illustrious fght career. A
day later, at the Memorial Sports Arena in Los
Angeles, Amir Khan (27-3) came back with
a victory after two consecutive defeats that
had left him without his WBA and IBF titles.
Carlos Molina (20-6-2) did not come out for
the eleventh round. The Bolton boxer, and
former Olympic silver medalist, now under
the tutelage of Virgil Hunter, did not spare
the rod against his Mexican opponent in a
fght he desperately needed to win to keep
his career relevant.
Rugby & Golf
The last scheduled autumn rugby union in-
ternational fxtures November 30, witnessed a
great victory at Twickenham, where England
beat World Champions New Zealand 38-12.
It was the frst loss for the All-Blacks in twenty
games. At Cardiff, more misery for the Welsh
who lost 14-12, to Australia; making it their
seventh consecutive home defeat.
Graeme McDowell ended his 2012 golfng
year on a high note, after winning the World
Challenge at the Sherwood Country Club at
Thousand Oaks California, December 2. The
2010 US Open champion fnished with a 17
under 271, three strokes better than Keegan
Bradley and ten strokes better than last years
winner, Tiger Woods.
Brazilians Foil Chelsea
The FIFA World Club Championship hosted
by Japan, December 6-16, featured six club
champions from the six FIFA regions, plus
the Japanese champions. The format is a
straight forward knockout competition, with
the European and South American cham-
pions automatically seeded to start in the
semi-fnals. The fnal drew a 70,000 plus
crowd, the usual tight game, and a victory
for Corinthians of Brazil over the European
champions Chelsea, where the only goal
of the game by Paolo Guerrero, in the 69
th
minute gave the South Americans a 1-0 win.
Near the end, a dramatic couple of minutes
unfolded that saw Gary Cahill sent off, and
Fernando Torres headed what he thought
was an equalizer in extra-time, but the ref
ruled it offside. Its the frst victory for a South
American side since 2006. Manchester
United won here in 2008.
The preliminary rounds saw Japanese
champions, Sanfrecce Hiroshima beat the
Oceanic Champions, Auckland City 1-0,
but then lose 2-1 to African Champions, Al-
Ahly of Egypt. CONCACAF club champions
CF Monterrey of Mexico overcame Asian
Champions, Ulsan Hyundai of Korean 3-1.
In the semifnals, South American champions
Corinthians beat Al-Ahy 1-0, after a Paolo
Guerrero netting on the half-hour. Chelsea
eased passed Monterrey in their semi-fnal
3-1. Juan Mata got the ball rolling in the
17
th
minute, followed by a Fernando Torres
scoring just after the break, while two minutes
later, Chavez put one in his own net to give
Chelsea three. The Mexicans got one back in
the fnal minute.
English League Cup
The quarter-finals of the Captital One
League Cup, December 11-12, saw home
side Bradford City oust Arsenal 3-2 on
penalties after a 1-1 tie. The second division
outft went ahead in the 16
th
minute, while
a late goal by the Gunners from Thomas
Vermaelen two minutes from time, forced
the encounter to extra-time. Aston Villa has
hardly set the Premier League alight this
year, but at Carrow Road against Norwich
City, the Villains roared to a 4-1 victory. The
Canaries went in front after 19 minutes, the
Villa equalized two minutes later, followed
by three more goals; two them courtesy of
Andreas Weismann. Swansea City beat
Middlesbrough, by the only goal of the game,
after Seb Hines put one in his own net in the
81
st
minute.
United, Arsenal & Celtic Move
Forward In Europe
The sixth and fnal matches of the Euro-
pean qualifying groups concluded December
4, 5, & 6. Chelsea bounced Nordsjaelland
6-1, at Stamford Bridge, in a game that
opened with two missed penalties, one
from each side; before David Luiz scored
from the spot in the 39
th
minute to put the
blues ahead. Later, Fernando Torres would
hit two, Gary Cahill and Juan Mata would
fnd the net, before Oscar would make it six.
However, Chelsea became the frst reigning
European Champions unable to make the
knockout phase of the competition, after the
away goals rule favoured Shaktar Donetsk,
after both clubs fnished on 10pts a piece.
Chelseas third place group fnish sees them
continue in the Europa League. Arsenal lost
2-1 in Greece to Olympiakos, after taking
the lead with a Tomas Rosicky goal seven
minutes before the break. The Greeks came
back with goals in the 66
th
and 73
rd
minutes.
Manchester United were beaten 1-0 by CFR
Cluj-Napoca where a Luis Alberto goal in the
56
th
minute, saw the Romanians become only
the third foreign side to win at Old Trafford. At
Parkhead, Celtic overcame Spartak Moscow
2-1. Gary Hooper put the Hoops ahead to de-
lirious celebration as 60,000 fans went wild.
The Russians leveled the game six minutes
from halftime, before Kris Commons put a
penalty away in the 82
nd
minute for victory.
Manchester City needed a win in Germany
to salvage their European dreams, but a
Julian Schrieber goal in the 57
th
minute for
Borussia Dortmund, shattered that illusion.
Result 1-0. Manchester United, Arsenal,
and Celtic will move on to the Champions
League knockout round, while the sky blues
who finished bottom of their group, will
channel their enthusiasms towards another
Premiership title.
Pardews Gamble, Spurs Dominate,
Tense Liverpool Thriller
All three British clubs in the Europa League,
made it through to the knockout round. New-
castle coach Alan Pardew, fully aware the
team was already through to the next round,
left some of his frst team men at home for the
clash in France with Bordeaux. The French
side won 2-0, with Cheick Diabate getting
both goals. At White Hart Lane, Tottenham
beat Panathinakos 3-1. Emmanuel Adebayor
set the Spurs on the victory trail in the 29
th
min-
ute, but the Greeks equalized nine minutes after
the break. An own goal by Orestis Karnezis in
the 76
th
minute, and a Jermain Defoe netting
seven minutes from time gave them the points.
In Italy, Liverpools Jordan Henderson hit the
only goal of the game against Udinese in the
23
rd
minute. The Italians were down to ten men
at the end after Giovanni Pasquale was sent
off eleven minute before the fnal whistle.
Scottish League & Cup Action
The fourth round of the William Hill Scot-
tish Cup, December 1-2, witnessed Rangers
beat third division rivals Elgin City at the Ibrox
3-0, courtesy of Dean Shiels, Kevin Kyle
and Kal Naismith. Celtic struggled in their
home encounter with Arbroath where the
visitors scored both goals for a 1-1 result.
Alex Keddie found his own net in the 36
th
minute to put the Hoops ahead, before Steven
Doris leveled the score three minutes from
time. The replay saw Adam Matthews secure
Celtics next round appearance where his 18
th
minute goal gave the green and whites a 1-0
win. Kilmarnock beat Queen of the South
2-1, who are still unbeaten in division two.
An own goal by Marius Zaliukas, six min-
utes from time gave Hibernian a 1-0 home
win over Hearts. One of the two remaining
Highland League sides left in the competition,
Deverondale, went out 2-1 at Raith Rovers,
Autumn Series
Sorts Out Rankings
THE EUROPEAN autumn fxtures clarifed
the standings of the top eight sides in the
world, ending as they did just before the
2015 World Cup was made.
At the beginning of the series, three
teams were certain of top seeding in their
pools: New Zealand, South Africa and
Australia. That left the fourth group with
a vacancy, hotly contested by France,
Wales, Argentina
and England, in
that order based
on the resul ts
from last years
World Cup.
France stole
an early march
on the opposition with a handsome home
victory over Australia. If England were to
mount a serious challenge, they had to
beat South Africa and Australia. This they
narrowly failed to do.
Waless chances of top seeding were
simply dismissed by four consecutive
defeats. They went down badly to Samoa,
Argentina and New Zealand. In their last
game, against Australia, they stood on the
brink of victory but lost in the last move
of the game unable to stop a Wallabies
break-away try.
Magnifcent England Beat All Blacks
At the same time in Twickenham,
England had recovered from defeats,
albeit narrow against Australia and South
Africa, and were giving the All Blacks a
genuine thrashing.
This was the New Zealand side un-
defeated since their victory at the World
Cup last year which many were hailing as
the greatest All Black side ever. England
simply blew them away with a 38-21
margin of victory, beating a record that
had stood since Prince Obolenskys 13-0
win in January 1936.
One swallow may not make a summer
but this English performance was stupen-
dous and perhaps signals a sea-change
in world standings.
Sadly and unfairly it did not lift them
into the worlds top four, the vacant spot
being awarded to France. While England
were heading upwards in the ratings,
Wales were slipping out of the top eight
into the list of third seeds.
Scotland fared even worse. Despite
their summer success in the southern
hemisphere, they lost all their home
games in November, including one
against Fiji. This was enough for coach
Andy Robinson who jumped just before
he was pushed.
RUGBY WORLD CUP 2015 DRAW
Pool A: Australia, England, Wales,
Oceania 1, play-off winner.
Pool B: South Africa, Samoa, Scotland,
Asia 1, Americas 2.
Pool C: New Zealand, Argentina,
Tonga, Europe 1, Africa 1.
Pool D: France, Ireland, Italy, Americas
1, Europe.
To make sense of the pool order, the
frst side is the top seed, the second is
next in strength and so on. England were
drawn in the same pool as Wales who
immediately offered to host their meet-
ing at the Millennium Stadium. England
politely refused!
Scotlands draw looks quite a kind one
though they are seeded below Samoa
which is not a very encouraging position.
For the frst time in World Cup history they
failed to get beyond the pools last time.
The World Champions and Argentina
should proceed quite comfortably into

Non-Leaguers Make Third Round
There were no big surprises in the second
round of the FA Cup, December 1-2, and a
number of minnows made it through to third
round where the big clubs join the draw.
Isthmian Premier side Hasting Utd, travel to
Middlesbrough, the Blue Square Conference
challengers Luton Town welcome Wolves.
Mansfeld Town secured a money spinner
of a tie with a home draw against Liverpool.
Fellow Conference outfits Barrow and
Macclesfeld were still battling after a 1-1 tie,
for a home tie against Championship leaders
Cardiff. A frozen pitch had postponed several
replay dates. Curiosity of the second round
was Bradfords expulsion from the competi-
tion having played an alleged ineligible player
during their 1-1 home tie with Brentford.
It was later overturned on appeal and the
replay saw Brentford win 4-2. Third round is
scheduled January 5-6-7.

Misfring England Suggest
Shootouts In Friendlies
ENGLAND coach Roy Hodgson believes us-
ing penalties to settle deadlocked friendlies
could help reverse the countrys dismal
record in tournament shootouts.
England lost its sixth shootout from seven
attempts to be knocked out of the European
Championship quarterfnals in June by Italy.
Hodgson said his players need to over-
come the weight of failure in shootouts
ahead of the 2014 World Cup, so he is
focusing part of his preparations.
Maybe in one of the friendly matches, if
the game fnishes in a draw, you should sug-
gest to the opponents that, Lets fnish it on
a penalty shootout, Hodgson said.
In 2013, England will play two friendlies
against 2014 World Cup host Brazil, as well
as fxtures against Scotland and Ireland.
second-minute lead on a Steven Gerrard
penalty kick. Stewart Downing earned his
frst Premier League assist on a Gerrard goal
and also scored himself in a 4-0 dismantling
of Fulham. The Reds overcame a Gerrard
own goal and the suspension of Suarez to
win 3-2 at West Ham with goals by Glen
Johnson, Joe Cole, and Jonjo Shelvey. The
new year game against Sunderland saw them
gain a 3-0 win.
Manchester City: Edin Dzeko
struck goals twice within the
frst four minutes at Norwich and
Sergio Aguero also scored, yet
City still needed an own goal to prevail, 4-3.
City launched 23 shots at Sunderlands goal
in a 1-0 defeat after beating Reading by the
same score when Gareth Barry struck deep
into stoppage time. Aguero, Javi Garcia and
Yaya Toure were the scorers in a 3-1 victory
at Newcastle. Goals Toure and Pablo Zabaleta
brought City back from a 2-0 defcit in the
Manchester derby before a stoppage-time
goal and a thrown object that struck defender
Rio Ferdinand in the head turned the game
ugly. Keeping up with neighbors United, City
beat Stoke 3-0 at home on New Years day.
Manchester United: Robin
van Persie scored his 17
th
goal
of the season to clinch a 2-0
triumph over West Bromwich
Albion after an own goal had provided United
an early lead. Defender Nemanja Vidic played
his second game after sitting out three
months with a knee injury. Javier Hernandezs
stoppage-time stunner capped an incredible
4-3 defeat of Newcastle in which Jonny
Evans scored for both teams, and van Persie
and Patrice Evra also scored. Evra headed
home from a van Persie corner kick in a 1-1
draw at Swansea City. United kept their lead
at the top by beating Wigan away 4-0.
Newcastle United: Demba
Bas double barely registered in
a 7-3 pummeling at Arsenal. The
Magpies led Manchester United
three times at Old Trafford but lost, 4-3;
James Perch scored in the fourth minute, an
own goal provided another lead, and Papiss
Demba Cisses goal midway through the
second half established a 3-2 advantage that
didnt last. Shola Ameobi fred home a superb
low shot in the 81
st
minute to secure a 1-0
defeat of Queens Park Rangers. Starting the
new year with a 2-1 defeat to Everton.
Norwich City: Russell Martin
scored twice after Anthony Pilk-
ington had connected in the 15
th
minute and the Canaries played
with a man advantage for the entire second
half, and still lost to defending champions
Manchester City, 4-3. An own goal that
bounced into the net off keeper Mark Bunn
decided the outcome. The Canaries had won
their ffth straight at home and extended an
unbeaten run to 10 matches by beating
Wigan Athletic, 2-1, with goals by Anthony
Pilkington and Wes Hoolahan. First game of
the new year saw them defeated by West
Ham 2-1.
Queens Park Rangers:
Keeper Robert Green fumbled
a ball into his net and though
Djibril Cisse scored midway
through the second half that own goal turned
out to be the winner in a 2-1 home loss to
West Bromwich Albion. Adel Taarabts double
brought QPR their frst Premier League victory
of the season, 2-1 at home against Fulham.
The winless run had been extended to a
record 16 games in a 2-2 draw at Wigan in
which Ryan Nelsen equalized and Cisses
goal brought a 2-1 lead that lasted only three
minutes. A further 3-0 home loss to Liverpool
was washed away when they beat Chelsea
1-0 in a surprise win.
Reading: A New Years day
3-1 loss at Tottenham came eight
days after halting a seven-game
losing streak with a Boxing Day
draw with Swansea, Reading beat West Ham,
1-0, for their second victory of the season.
Pavel Pogrebnyak scored his third league
goal in the ffth minute -by stealing a back
pass and steering his shot home. The Royals
ended a seven-match losing streak by tying
Swansea City, 0-0, despite taking only three
shots and putting just one on frame.
Southampton: The Saints
earned a very respectable 1-1
tie with Arsenal in their opening
game of the new year. After
opening up a 3-1 lead at Stoke City the Saints
were pulled back into a 3-3 draw. Rickie Lam-
bert opened the scoring in the 10
th
minute,
Jay Rodriguez cashed in a giveaway and an
own goal provided the trio. Lamberts penalty
kick with fve minutes remaining secured a
1-1 draw at Fulham. Jason Puncheon scored
after an earlier effort had been annulled to
down Reading, 1-0, and lift Saints out of the
cellar for the frst time this season.
Stoke City: Cameron Jeromes
spectacular volley in the 90
th

minute rescued a 3-3 draw with
Southampton in which the Potters
went down to 10 men yet still fought back
from a 3-1 defcit. Kenwyne Jones and Matt
Upson scored before Steven Nzonzi was
sent off with the score 3-2, and Jerome
slammed in a shot off the underside of the
crossbar moments after a correct offside
flag denied him a goal. Jones equalizer
early in the second half cancelled out a Ryan
Shawcross own goal and earned the Potters
a 1-1 draw with Everton. A 3-0 away loss to
Manchester City got them off to a poor start
to the new year.
Sunderland: In the last
game of the year the Black
Cats were defeated 2-1 by
Spurs. Adam Johnson took
revenge on the team that sold him for 10
million by beating former teammate Joe Hart
with a dipping shot in a 1-0 defeat of defend-
ing champions Manchester City. Steven
Fletchers goal just before halftime brought
the Black Cats a 1-0 victory at Southampton
that rewarded the 1,814 fans who made
the long trip. Sunderland went to Anfeld on
January 2, coming away with no points after
a 3-0 loss.
Swansea City: Danny Graham
and Jonathan De Guzman scored
in each half as the Swans won
their fourth away match of the
season 2-1 at Fulham. They won four road
games all of last season. After Michu briefy
took over the lead atop the scoring charts
by netting his 13
th
of the season in a 1-1
draw with Manchester United Swansea tied
0-0 with Reading. Michu started the long
December schedule by getting both goals,
both of them late, as the Swans upended
Arsenal, 2-0.
Tottenham: Another 3-1 victory
against Reading saw Spurs stay in
the top tier. Spurs stunned Sunder-
land with goals three minutes apart
early in the second half to overturn a
1-0 defcit and win away, 2-1. Aaron Lennon
got the winner after an own goal had tied it up.
Gareth Bale rattled in a hat trick after Jermaine
Defoe broke open a goalless game as Spurs
pummeled Aston Villa, 4-0. Jan Vertonghens
frst league goal for Spurs following his 12
million move from Ajax downed Swansea
City, 1-0; he swept home a Kyle Walker free
kick in the 75
th
minute.
West Bromwich Albion: After an
end of the year 2-0 loss the league
leaders Manchester United the Bag-
gies were defeated at home 2-1 by
Fulham. A Chris Brunt shot from about 30
yards out and an own goal brought the Bag-
gies a 2-1 victory at Queens Park Rangers.
Zoltan Geras goal ended a goalless run of
nearly six hours and Romelu Lukaku strike
with eight minutes left provided a 2-1 defeat
of Norwich City.
West Ham United: Starting
the new year with a useful 2-1
home win against Norwich. An
errant James Collins back pass
was converted into a Reading goal fve min-
utes into the match and the Hammers futilely
chased the game in a 1-0 defeat. They had
started the month in spectacular fashion,
thumping Chelsea, 3-1, with a Carlton Cole
equaliser and winning strikes goals from
substitutes Mohamed Diame and Modibo
Maiga. Cole scored against Everton in the
14
th
minute then was controversially sent off
in what became a 2-1 defeat.
Wigan Athletic: A 4-0 home
loss to Manchester United came
after a victory at Villa. Ivan Ramis
scored in the third minute and
Emmerson Boyce and Arouna Kone scored
four minutes apart early in the second half of
a 3-0 victory at Aston Villa. Shaun Maloney
equalized early in the second half at Norwich
but 13 minutes later the Latics conceded
the winner and this time couldnt catch up.
Goals by James McCarthy twice brought
back the Latics after falling behind QPR but
all they could take out of the match was a
2-2 draw.
Arsenal: Thierry Henry watched
from the stands as Theo Walcotts
hat trick and two goals by Oliver
Giroud powered the Gunners past
Newcastle, 7-3. Walcott scored the frst,
fourth and seventh goals and set up Girouds
double; Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Lucas
Podolski also hit the net. Santi Cazorla was
the hat-trick hero of a 5-2 romp at Reading
in which Podolski and Walcott bagged the
other two goals. Managing only a 1-1 draw
with Southampton on New Years Day, left
Arsenal out of the top three.
Aston Villa: Three crushing de-
feats by combined scores of 15-0
against Wigan, Tottenham and
Chelsea the latter an 8-0 hammer-
ing eradicated the goodwill of a 3-1 win at
Liverpool. Christian Benteke sandwiched his
two goals around Andreas Weimanns strike
as Villa ran a soon-to-be-forgotten unbeaten
streak to fve matches. A good 2-2 draw
was gained at Swansea kept them out of the
drop zone.
Chelsea: Frank Lampard cel-
ebrated his return to the starting
lineup by scoring an equalizer late
in the frst half and a second-half
winner as Chelsea rallied from a 1-0 defcit to
win at Everton, 2-1, after theyd conceded a
goal in the second minute. It was their fourth
straight victory. A moment of brilliance from
Juan Mata produced the only goal of an away
win at Norwich. Seven different players tallied
in an 8-0 rout of Aston Villa; Ramires got
his second in stoppage time to fnish as top
scorer. January 2 saw Chelsea beaten in a
shock 1-0 to QPR at the Bridge.
Everton: Steven Pienaars goal
in the second minute stunned
Chelsea but the visitors recovered
to take a 2-1 win at Goodison
Park. Leon Osmans goal broke open a goal-
less game against Wigan Athletic early in the
second half and Phil Neville marked his 500th
Premier League appearance by serving up the
chance Phil Jagielka put away for the winner.
In a 2-1 win at West Ham Piennar notched
the winner nine minutes after Victor Anichebe
equalized. Maroune Felliani sat out all three
games serving a suspension for callously
head-butting Stokes Ryan Shawcross, who
had provided Everton with an own goal in a
1-1 draw. Everton gained a 2-1 away victory
at Newcastles expense in the new year.
Fulham: Bobbles by backup
keeper Davi d Stockdal e gave
Swansea City a pair of goals in a
2-1 defeat in which Bryan Ruizs
shot defected into the net off an offside
Sascha Riether. Stockdale had been recalled
from his loan stint with Hull City to replace
an injured Mark Schwarzer. Dimitar Berbatov
knocked home a rebound in the eighth minute
to give the Cottagers a 1-0 advantage over
Southampton at home, but with fve minutes
to play Chris Baird handled the ball in the
box and Southampton converted the penalty
kick to earn a 1-1 draw. Another good 2-1
away win at West Brom saw them hold their
place in the table.
Liverpool: Luis Suarez scored
twice six minutes apart in the frst
quarter of an hour in a 3-0 romp
at Queens Park Rangers. Daniel
Agger nodded home the third in
the 28
th
minute to provide a get-well gift for
manager Brandan Rodgers, who was too
sick to man the bench. The Reds collapsed
at Stoke, losing 3-1 after taking a shock

AUSTRALIA, host country England and
Wales were herded together in the same
eye-catching group for the 2015 World
Cup December 3, ensuring one of the
worlds leading rugby nations will fail to
qualify for the quarterfnals.
It didnt take long before organizers
and coaches dubbed Pool A the Group of
Death and with some justifcation.
Already pitched into the toughest pool
for the 2015 Rugby World Cup, England is
now faced with the prospect of playing one
of its matches in Wales against Wales at
its own tournament.
Last months draw produced one of the
most intriguing pools in the tournaments
history, with the English and Welsh
fierce rugby rivals herded together
with two-time winner Australia. It has
also thrown up a logistical nightmare for
organizers.
England is the host team but relied on
fnancial support from Wales to get the
tournament. The Welsh now want some
payback and are calling for their games to
be played at Cardiffs Millennium Stadium
including the match against England.
It is very important to remember that
Wales was included in Englands bid for
matches in the Millennium Stadium, said
Roger Lewis, chief executive of the Welsh
Rugby Union. What was pencilled in was
eight games and I think they (England)
would embrace the opportunity to play in
the fnest rugby stadium in the world.
Wales cheeky attempt was rebuffed, as
expected, by England.
APPRECIATE
We appreciate the kind offer and its
a lovely place to go and play rugby but
we do have a nice stadium of our own,
Rugby Football Union chief executive Ian
Ritchie said. Its always important for all
of us to have a sense of humour in terms of
making that invitation, but we feel we have
a decent spot here to play rugby.
The RFU, however, do not have the
fnal say and organizers have yet to rule
out the scenario.
I am not going to say one way or the
other, ER2015 chief executive Debbie
Jevans said. I understand where Roger
is coming from.
Now we know what the draw is we can
go away and look at the appropriate venues
for the appropriate matches.
The match schedule and venues will be
published in March next year.
France captain Thierry Dusautoir
described his teams group as a little
Six Nations and had one eye on gaining
revenge over the All Blacks after losing
to them in the 2011 fnal.
At least we are not in the group de la
mort (Group of Death), France coach
Philippe Saint-Andre said.
The identities of the eight remaining
qualifers for the four fve-team pools will
be known at the end of the global quali-
fying process in 2014. The 2015 World
Cup takes place from September 18 to
October 31.

Bale Defends Himself After
Being Booked For Diving
TOTTENHAM winger Gareth Bale has accused
referees of booking him for no reason after
being given a yellow card for diving for the
third time this season.
The pacy Wales international has picked
up a reputation for being a diver and he was
cautioned for going to ground too easily in
Tottenhams 2-1 win over Sunderland in the
Premier League on Saturday.
Bale says theres nothing I can do, the
referees need to look a bit closer. People think
Im diving when theres contact.
Its the ffth time Bale has been booked for
diving over the past two seasons.
Bale says if people kick me, Im going to
go down. It doesnt bother me, people keep
saying Im diving but it doesnt bother me
whatsoever.
Nottingham Forest Hires Alex
Mcleish As Manager
SECOND-TIER English club Nottingham For-
est has hired former Birmingham and Aston
Villa manager Alex McLeish, a day after fring
Sean ODriscoll.
Forest said on its website last month that
McLeish will be in charge for their next home
game, and the club is hoping he can replicate
his feat with Birmingham and lead the team to
promotion to the Champions League.
McLeish led Birmingham to the 2011
League Cup title, but left after the team was
relegated that same season. He had a tough
stint with archrival Aston Villa, where he was
never accepted by the fans. He was fred in
May after just avoiding relegation.
Beckham In No Rush To
Join New Club
NEARLY a month after leaving the Los An-
geles Galaxy, David Beckham is considering
a number of serious proposals but is in no
rush to fnd a new team.
He has been linked to clubs in France,
Australia and Asia in what would be the
fnal chapter of the illustrious career of the
37-year-old midfelder and former England
captain.
A host of clubs have made offers,
Beckhams management company said in
a statement to The Associated Press on
Thursday, but it remains early days in the
process.
David is in no hurry to make a decision,
the key is making the right one as he has
always done successfully in his career, the
statement said.
Beckham ended his fve-year stint in the
United States by helping the Galaxy win the
MLS Cup on December 1.
Struggling Blackburn Sack
Coach Henning Berg
BLACKBURN Rovers has sacked its coach
Henning Berg after less than two months in
the job following a poor run of form for the
second-tier club.
Blackburn announced the departure of
manager Henning Berg, assistant manager
Eric Black, frst-team coach Iain Brunskill
and goalkeeping coach Bobby Mimms with
immediate effect last month citing a very
disappointing sequence of results.
A former Blackburn defender during his
playing career, the 43-year-old Norwegian
was in charge for 10 league games win-
ning just once and losing fve of the last six
matches.

BRITAIN IS pumping record amounts of
cash into its Olympic sport programs, aim-
ing to win more medals in Rio de Janeiro in
2016 than it did as host nation in London
last year.
Despite continuing austerity measures
in Britain, the sports body pledged last
month to invest 276m an increase of
fve percent to meet a target of winning 66
medals in Brazil, one more than its record
total in London.
Its a very, very tough ask, Sports
Minister Hugh Robertson told The Associ-
ated Press. But there are sports that didnt
perform particularly well in London. If we can
get them right and continue the improvement
in other sports, theres no reason why we
shouldnt do it.
Roared on by passionate home crowds,
Britain fnished third in gold medals in London
with 29, behind the United States and China.
Britain was fourth in the overall medal count
with 65, behind the US, China and Russia.
We want to be the frst nation in recent
history to be more successful in both the
Olympics and Paralympics, post-hosting,
said Liz Nicholl, chief executive of UK Sport,
the body that distributes government and
National Lottery funds to Olympics sports.
Britain Increases Funds
In Bid For Olympic Medals
Cycling produced Britains most med-
als in London with 12, followed by rowing
with nine, and both sports will receive at
least 30m in an attempt to maintain their
supremacy. Boxing was the biggest winner
after being given 13.8m 4.25m more
than the 2009-13 cycle.
British swimming, which performed below
expectations in London, was one of five
sports to have its Olympic funding slashed,
while four more basketball, handball,
wrestling and table tennis will receive no
cash at all.
We have learned how to invest the money
strategically it isnt about being popular, its
about using compassion without sentimental-
ity, said Sue Campbell, the chair of UK Sport.
We will continue with our athletes-centered,
no-compromise approach.
With funding for Paralympic sports up 43
percent to 70.2m, it is a huge commitment
by the British government at a time when
families and businesses are feeling the
economic pinch.
The London Games inspired the public
and moved politicians to make a commit-
ment, Nicholl said.
UK Sport said a breakdown of medal
projections by sport for Rio will not be made
until months before the games.

Wiggins Backtracks As He Eyes
Another Tour Title
BRADLEY WIGGINS says he wants
to defend his Tour de France title after
previously indicating his focus in 2013
could be on the Giro dItalia and the Span-
ish Vuelta.
The 32-year-old Briton had said he
would probably help Team Sky teammate
Christopher Froome, who fnished second
behind him in July, win the 2013 Tour.
But Wiggins said last month: My goal
is to win the Tour next
year ... whether that is
realized or not I dont
know really. Were still
in this planning phase at
the moment.
The decision falls with Sky general
manager Dave Brailsford, but on the BBC,
Wiggins said maybe well have two lead-
ers, which is more than likely I guess.
