Jaguar Land Rover To Build New UK Engine Plant
JAGUAR Land Rover is investing in a new plant in Britain to build low-emission engines. The company said last month that the new plant near Wolverhampton will cost 355m and will employ up to 750 people. Jaguar Land Rover is part of Tata Motors, which acquired the company from Ford in 2008. Ralf Speth, chief executive of Jaguar Land Rover, said the company plans to invest 1.5bn a year over the next five years to develop and expand its product lines.
BRITNEY SPEARS has raised some hackles in Hackney. Officials in the east London borough, which was scarred by the August riots, are miffed that the singer filmed a video in the area that shows her robbing a store and brandishing a gun. Spears shot the clip for her upcoming single Criminal while she was on tour in Britain this month. The singers public relations firm says the video depicts Spears and boyfriend Jason Trawick in a Bonnie and Clyde-style setup, holding shops up while on the run as armed robbers. For Hackney Council, that was in poor taste. It said officials had approved the video shoot but did not agree that a replica gun could be used on location. The council is taking this up with the production company.
JUDGES in London are hearing appeals from 10 individuals jailed for involvement in the rioting and looting that hit Britain in August. The defendants are arguing against what they deem excessive sentences. They include two men sentenced to four years in prison for setting up Facebook pages inciting others to riot. More than 1,700 people have been charged and nearly 200 jailed for offenses connected to the riots that started in London and spread to several other English cities. Three judges at Londons Court of Appeal will hear the cases and decide whether the sentences handed down were proportionate to the crime. The judges are not expected to rule until a later date.
ACTOR DAVID WALLIAMS has battled diarrhea, polluted waters and strong tides to complete a 140 mile charity swim along the River Thames. Walliams, best known for his role in the television comedy show Little Britain, raised more than 1m ($1.58m) for the charity Sport Relief with his grueling, eight-day challenge. The 40-year-old started at the source
of the Thames in Gloucestershire, and nished at the Big Ben clock tower in London. The journey is almost seven times the distance of the English Channel. It saw him brave strong and unpredictable currents, busy river trafc, and sewage-polluted waters. He also endured vomiting and diarrhea along the way.

IS THERE gold in them thar Scottish Hills? There is according to a company called Scotgold Resources, but they are having problems getting mining permits with various environmental groups concerned about the destruction of the landscape through slurry and waste run-off. The community of Tyndrum, located in Loch Fyne, in Loch Lomond National Park, has been the site of lead mining for some years up to around the 1920s. Innovative geologists suspected that where there is lead, there could be gold and silver too. An Irish company did a survey some 25 years ago and found traces, but considered the recovery costs fiendishly high. In 2005, an Australian company tried their luck and also decided it would be exorbitantly expensive to mine the gold. During that time however, the price of gold has risen to some $1,800 per ounce and the costs associated with mining the mineral have now become a profitable possibility. Scotgold projects an annual recovery of 20,000 ounces of gold and 80,000 ounces of silver, from a 2,200 sq km location in an area 40 miles north of Glasgow. The company says itll bring much needed jobs to the area, but the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park and Scottish National Heritage have turned down two applications from the mining company, citing concerns over the decimation of one of Scotlands most pristine panoramas. The company is deadly serious about the project however, and has already sunk a 1.2km exploration tunnel into the mountainside. It is aware that the mine will produce a lot of waste, but has promised to take measures that will deter any kind of eyesore on the Glen. Scotgold would be the first operating gold mine in Scotland, for over 500 years, and pledges to work out it differences with both the NPA and the SNH.

He was held with his bag of loot, until police arrived. Detective-Inspector Michael Fenton, called it an extremely brave, public effort to bring a criminal to justice, but warned that the police do not encourage members of the public to put themselves at risk in such circumstances, especially when someone is armed. The unnamed man is due in court on robbery charges.

The Rev King Arthur Pendragon, appeared in court in flowing robes, denouncing the removal as sacrilegious, as they were the bones of either the royal line or priest caste, and were the true guardians of Stonehenge. The 57-year-old ex-soldier who changed his name through deed-poll, told the court that once the remains got into the university and archeological systems, they would end up in a museum, and never be returned to their places of burial. He said it was just common decency, to leave the dead where they lay. The Court ruled the University of Sheffield had legal possession until 2015, and challenges could only take place at that time. The Rev King Arthur Pendragon who signed court papers Arthur Rex, says hell continue his fight. More Bark Than Bite So All Bets Off On Vegas The Dog
A GERMAN shepherd by the name of Vegas, appeared to have all the qualities for making a top rate police dog. She showed no emotion to the sound of gunfire, could leap over a variety of obstacles, jump out of windows, and even bark on command. Problem was however, she wouldnt bite anyone. She could do everything the police dog training school at Ponteland, Northumberland, asked of her, except for actually apprehending offenders that included getting her teeth tightly around any miscreants. They tried everything but Vegas was just not an aggressive dog. It was with much sorrow that trainers at the centre had to say goodbye to Vegas, who was not regarded as good police dog material because of her friendly attitude. The dog was put up for adoption. Shell make a lovely pet, said Trainer Sergeant John Sim.
ROBERT GOULD has had a few fenderbenders in his time and has sometimes lost a little paint during parking attempts. But a on a recent house-hunting expedition travelling down a near-deserted country road, near Leek, in Staffordshire, a cow came out of nowhere and landed on top of his Citroen C5. It took him some eighty yards to bring his vehicle to a halt, and when he phoned 999 for police assistance the first thing they did was breathalyse him after hearing his story about the cow. The car was total write off. The windshield was cracked and loose, a wheel had fallen off and the bonnet was severely dented and damaged. Any questions about the bovine were soon resolved when the body of the animal was found lying dead on the road. The farmer who owned the cow reckoned something must have really scared the cow to leap over a three foot fence and into the road. He said it was highly unusual for cows to jump over fences and was without an explanation on why the creature did what he did. Gould, 24, of Darlaston, got a few cuts and bruises and is grateful there were not any other vehicles approaching from the other direction. He admitted it would make an interesting insurance claim and it had made him much more aware of unusual motoring
TEA DRINKERS are in a kerfuffle after Twinings reformulated their Earl Grey tea and re-launched the new blend some months ago. Renowned for its smooth and genteel taste, Twinings has added more lemon and bergamot to the blend, which has left fervent Earl Grey drinkers furious. A facebook page sprang up protesting the changing of a recipe that has endured since 1830, and unhappy tea drinkers added their complaints on Twinings web page. Apparently, the new Earl Grey is a little bit more lemony and with a stronger hint of citrus. Bergamot is a genus of orange that originated in southeast Asia, but if now grown commercially in Italy. It is not a sweet tasting orange, but is not as tangy and bitter as grapefruit, and is used in cake making and other confectionaries. Its always been part of the Earl Grey formula, but the portions of lemon and bergamot have been increased. The second Earl Grey was prime minister back in the 1820s, whose fame rested on changing Britains ancient electoral districts in his authored Reform Bill. He lived at Howick Hall in Northumberland, where the drinking water had a terrible lime taste, and he requested a tea merchant blend a brew of tea that would hide the waters sour flavor. It was soon requested by friends and relatives, and in 1830, Jacksons of Piccadilly, began producing it commercially. Most of the bidders plan to use at least part of the building in Fulham Broadway as an hotel. The council, which runs most of its services from Hammersmith town hall, plans to name a preferred bidder by December. The man who brought laughter to millions of Americans and Brits in the US, and was awarded the OBE by Queen Elizabeth II in 2002, for syndicating the top British comedy TV shows from the BBC and, Thames Television, has died. Donald L Taffner, an, independent American distributor of television progamming was believed to have suffered an aneurysm or blood clot in the heart. He was 80. had told him that standards were lowered to help black and ethnic minority recruits. The claim was astonishing and an insult to anyone from such a background who wanted a career in policing, Winsor added. He suggested that the public could be at risk if poor academic skills damaged the effectiveness of potentially vital evidence. Home Secretary Theresa May asked Winsor to look at entry requirements for the police in order to widen the pool of talent for top officers. This could include allowing leaders from other areas of the public sector of industry to enter the top ranks directly. Police training could also be opened up to universities, colleges and specialist companies in the private sector. Winsor admitted that many people who were totally unsuitable to be police officers could pass academic tests. It takes more than a clever person to be a cop, he said. It takes maturity, judgment, bravery and the ability to deal with people. FINALLY Grave advice from Lawrence Yogi Berra: Always go to other peoples funerals, otherwise they wont come to yours. And hes dead right about that! sholmes168@gmail.com Taffner began his career in showbiz in 1952, working at the William Morris Agency with a job in the mailroom, and later became an agent. Four years later he went to Paramount where he helped to begin their TV Distribution Programme Dept. After his marriage to Eleanor Bolta in 1961, he and his, wife started their own business as a worldwide distributor of TV programmes and later added TV and stage productions. In the 1970s, in a deal with Thames Television in the UK, Taffners company produced an American version of Man About the House that became Threes Company on ABC, and likewise with adapting Thames Keep It in the Family that became Too Close for Comfort, on ABC. He also packaged the very popular The Benny Hill Show for syndication in the US. Taffner later added the very popular BBC comedy series My Family and Judi Dench in As Times Goes By. On the theatrical side the company owns and manages the Shaftesbury Theatre in Londons West End. His contributions to the TV industry were recognized by the International Council of the National Academy of TV Arts & Sciences, which presented him with its Founders Award Emmy in 1986 for setting new levels of creativity in the worldwide exchange of television programmes. Taffner is survived by a son, producer Donald L Taffner Jr, two daughters Karen Butler and Rhonda Taffner Cantor, and three grandchildren. His wife Eleanor died a year ago.

THIS MONTH, wed like to take a little break from the everyday romance and mayhem of Albert Square to tell you about something special that weve been working on here at the E20 Launderette Institute for EastEnders Research. It is a Special Edition of The E20 Chronicles to benefit Children In Need. If youve been following along, you know that in the last two years weve published two issues of The E20 Chronicles magazine to benefit EastEnders on PBS here in the US. Each of these glossy, full color issues is chock full of brand new, exclusive interviews with some of your favorite EastEnders stars. They are available only by pledging to your PBS station, and so far those two issues have raised over one hundred thousand dollars for these stations, to help keep the EastEnders flag flying on this side of the pond. We truly appreciate all the time these actors, writers and producers have taken out of their very busy schedules to assist us. Everyone involved in EastEnders and its production company have been so supportive, in helping us with the two magazine projects, that we thought it would be nice to do something to benefit a British charity. And we chose Children In Need because we know that EastEnders supports them, (in fact, if you search YouTube, youll find some of EastEnders contributions to the annual telethon. So here is where it gets exciting for you (we hope!): Coming out this month, and available on-line in both the US and the UK, is a new edition of The E20 Chronicles that benefits Children In Need. This edition of The E20 Chronicles is different: Instead of a magazine, it is an 80 page softcover book that features fun, exclusive interviews with stars Gary Beadle (Paul Trueman), Charlie Brooks (Janine Butcher), June Brown (Dot Branning), Leslie Grantham (Den Watts), Martine McCutcheon (Tiffany Mitchell), Sid Owen (Ricky Butcher), Patsy Palmer (Bianca Butcher), John Partridge (Christian Clarke), Shane Richie (Alfie Moon), Jane Slaughter (Tracy the Barmaid), Lucy Speed (Natalie

I HAVE just reached my fiftieth year in teaching, having started in Stoke Newington in September 1962, the month before the Cuban Missile Crisis. Ahead of me lay hundreds of pupils, thousands of lessons and millions of unread words. My first school was a inner-city secondary modern school of the To Sir With Love type. Tough. The pupil qualification for being there was to have failed the eleven-plus. Corporal punishment was still available yet by and large the children respected the teachers, as long as the battle lines were firmly drawn. That said, any number of supply teachers came and went often on the same day. The Head was Mr Bone whose view of life was deeply informed by his Christianity plus an unquenchable optimism that inside the worst of kids there was a nugget of goodness. The classes were still large forty or more but behaviour was never a serious concern. It helped too that the school leaving age was 15 and that children would be leaving as soon as they reached that age. MOVED A year later I moved to a Shropshire grammar school, as an assistant English and games teacher. The school had just been formed by amalgamating a boys grammar school and a girls high school and the headteacher wanted a young man with experience of coeducation. The pupils were impeccably behaved. The boys were addressed by their surnames and the girls by their Christian names (at a time when everyone was assumed to be Christian). Staff were also called by their surnames. Academic gowns, not mortarboards though, were worn. To have reached a grammar school was the highest honour a working-class child could attain. Depending on where you lived, the percentage of boys going to one was barely 10 percent, while for girls it was more difficult, with far fewer places available: one of the many injustices of the eleven-plus system. Five pleasant years passed until I was expected to be ambitious and obliged to apply for a senior post somewhere else in the country. TRANSIENT Chance took me to Wiltshire, my second secondary modern school but this one had a large intake of army children. The offspring of non-commissioned officers did not receive special payments from the army to enable them to attend public/private schools. Since they were subject to two-year postings, the school population was largely transient. It made them articulate and good at settling down but their education lacked consistency as they were shuffled from pillar to post. My new head lacked a couple of useful attributes: managerial skills and a brain. He was of the generation that had served in the war and on being demobbed was eligible for a one-year teaching qualification, clearly insufficient to teach him anything. I endured three years of misery till I got the chance to move to a school that was going comprehensive. At this point, the leaving age was raised to 16 and money poured in to equip schools to face the problems of preparation for external exams. This enabled schools to build extra teaching rooms with the so-called ROSLA (Raising of the School leaving Age) money. UNFIT Legions of extra teachers were required: an extra quarter of the secondary teaching
greatly diminished respect for teachers. Nowadays, it is impossible to say anything negative about your pupils so every child grows up believing they are Gods gift to the world and they have abundant examples of people living rich lives without ever having exerted themselves in schools so why work? Ultimately, schools cannot be seen as establishments that stand outside society. They faithfully reflect the values of that society. David Cameron is fond of talking about our broken society, a meaningless phrase. Society has certainly changed in the two generations since I first went into a classroom. Then everyone had two married parents. Television was in its infancy. Education was valued and scarce. People had careers not short-term contracts. Money was tight for everyone you knew. Professional footballers travelled to Saturday games on the same buses as their fans. Look at the crowd at the World Cup Final of 1966 and youll see it was almost exclusively composed of men in hats, wearing collar and tie, waving wooden rattles and shouting Two, four, six, eight. Who do we appreciate? E-N-G-L-A-N-D. ENGLAND!!!! TEMPTATION Todays children are far more worldlywise. They have infinitely more temptations than we ever dreamt possible. They are heading into a world where they will have to fight for survival. What they need from their teachers is respect, affection and a firm hand. Above all they need to be expected to achieve high standards. It is this expectation which determines how successful a student will be. Thats what the last fifty years have taught me. john.polley1@ntlworld.com

She later played a rousing tune announcing the formal cutting by the Mayor of the ribbon guarding Jameson Cottage front door. Congratulations to all!! The UJ and Agoura Hills Canyon Club marketing director Mark Jason are running a joint promotion in the LA area for the British group, The Yardbirds (For Your Love and Heart full of Soul) that was hugely successful, offering special promotional tickets to Pubs and British shops alike. THE BRITISH Home in Sierra Madre this month celebrated 80 years of continued service to the British Community and reopened Jameson Cottage, after extensive alternations. Mayor John Buchanan and his wife Teri gave a speech to 70 area representatives of the Daughters of the British Empire, residents, and friends for recognizing the changing world in which more people live longer, thereby creating greater needs for 24 hours nursing care. He applauded the re-opening of Jameson Cottage, now designed with the express purpose of accommodating residents with special needs. He congratulated and thanked the Home for this, his community, for the last 80 years with a reminder that his wasnt the end but the beginning of the next 80 years

After the show we continued celebrating back stage with the Yardbirds and what a great bunch of Brits! Weve a feeling Sharon wont forget this birthday! www.theyardbirds.com The Brits came out, flags waving, to keep the show on the road as it were. Henry Winkler (The Fonz) has been made an Honorary Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, being presented by Sir Nigel Sheinwald in recognition of his services to children with dyslexia and special educational needs. Henry has spent much of the last two years touring the UK, educating school children, educators, and policy makers alike about dyslexia and other learning difficulties, talking about his own childhood struggles with school and the resulting bullying. He is living proof that difficulties can be overcome and that for those suffering challenges and self-doubt, happy days can nevertheless lie ahead. Congratulations Henry. Ive met him several times at Paramount Studios and hes a delightful man. LANDING IN a foreign country gives an immediate fresh eye on that countrys mores and differences. Clearing out boxes last week, I found three forgotten handwritten pages ripped from a 1988 journal, random observations on my first six months on American soil (Tennessee, not Florida). Over 23 years later, some American traits have seeped into the UKs way of life. For example, Halloween was then a non-event in the UK till we copied Americans. Following are those unedited, fly on the wall jottings: OBSERVATION AMERICA: Commercialisation of even the most insignificant event, over-promoting of every occasion on TV even the TV Weatherman tells viewers to buy a Mothers Day card Valentines Day (the lovers holiday) everybody gets a card here, even the postman or your childs teacher ludicrous. All to push people into the shops Never seen a people who buy, buy, buy like this, acquiring stuff. Christmas is such unbelievable mushy kitsch with giant red velvet ribbons tied to lamp-posts No real, lived-in faces on TV unlike the BBC. Everybody on TV is pretty, characterless, bland, witless. Every newswoman has perfectly-coiffed hair. In UK its substance in BBC newsreaders, not looks very unsophisticated nation, easily shocked at anything, scandalized by things Europeans have accepted for centuries. The TV here bleeps out the word Goddamn from films. No breasts allowed in love scenes on TV, so realism jettisoned for prudity wonderful food, excellent quality and value for money, eating out cheap compared to UK custom here of baby showers, before the baby is even confirmed as a live birth, so expectant parents can grab, grab, grab. I refuse to attend any in UK we wait till baby arrives and hold a Christening to celebrate birth, not pile up tons of presents Americans think frankness gives offence so superficiality is common awards-obsessed with a
plaque / medal / trophy given for absolutely everything in USA, mediocrity is elevated doing that of course, trivialises the truly meritorious they even have a graduation ceremony with robes and mortar boards for tots leaving Kindergarten Guns are huge focus and their Wild West heritage remains where brawn before brains seems to be the way they go the cinema more than Brits, seeing anything the moment it comes out, regardless of quality or reviews. Stench of popcorn as they shovel vast buckets into their mouths like a cement-mixer never seen so many fat people in other countries Americans have such beautiful white teeth unlike most Brits Constant mispronunciation of words and poor grammar (azma for asthma, erbs for herbs, Ko-Lin for the name Colin I should have went instead of I should have gone examples too numerous to list elections most cumbersome way of electing a leader you could devise events called political conventions which are truly big-top circus, compared to concise, dignified (and cheap!) process of UK elections stunned to see bank tellers dressed in Halloween costumes and counters draped in cobwebs and pumpkins utterly inappropriate in a bank rampant hypochondria with endless commercials pushing medications culture of gulping prescription drugs instead of first waiting to see if body cures itself obese people loading up on blood-pressure drugs when dropping some blubber would lower it naturally woman on TV refuses to let her child play outside in case he gets lyme disease the roads are so wonderfully wide and driving here a pleasure they seem thrilled by hearing my English accent and behave properly around me as if Im the Queen funny but nice Americans unpolished but kind demonstrative patriotic flag-wavers with hand on heart during anthem we Brits should show more country pride. Rejected Beatles Toilet Oops, Wrong Hotel; Only 12,000 Miles Out and were with Majestic Roll Worth A Load MICHAELarrive Sunette Adendorff to be Parade was, theresthe hotel here. Hotel. I excited to in Eastbourne only said: Oh no, no I looked
HARD AND SHINY was the complaint by the Beatles about a toilet roll that is now said to be worth 1,000 a sheet. Apparently the Fab Four refused to use the roll while recording the Abbey Road album. It was deemed to be too hard and shiny and the band was also unhappy with the fact it had EMI stamped on every sheet. Beatles fan Barry Thomas snapped up the toilet roll for 85 at an auction in 1980. It came complete with a jokey letter of authentication by EMI manager Ken Townsend. The letter, signed by Townsend, reads: Most things went very smoothly with the Beatles at Abbey Road but not this roll of toilet paper which they complained was too hard and shiny. They thought it disgraceful that the management should stamp each sheet of paper with EMI Ltd. The paper was immediately withdrawn and things became much smoother for staff after that. Experts have told Barry it is impossible to price such an odd object but he has since been offered 1,000 just for one sheet. frustrated at not being able to nd their hotel the reason being, they had made their reservation at the wrong Eastbourne. The South African couple had booked a room in the 90-a-night Majestic Hotel in the UK Eastbourne, which promised splendid views of the Sussex seaside towns pier. But, to their disappointment, when they travelled to Eastbourne, New Zealand, they found their planned destination didnt have any hotels, reported the Daily Telegraph. Mrs Adendorff thought something was wrong with their hire cars GPS as they drove around in circles in the Wellington suburb. It was only when they stopped at the local chemists shop to ask directions, they discovered where they had gone wrong. OFFERED Shop assistant Linda Burke said: They just walked in and asked me where Royal at it and said: Thats in the UK, thats in England. Burke then rang around but discovered all the local bed and breakfast places were full, so she offered them a room for the night in her house. The couple, who were planning to explore New Zealand while visiting the country to watch South Africa play in the Rugby World Cup, had mistakenly booked into the hotel in Eastbourne, Sussex, on the internet. I booked into the right hotel, just in the wrong country, Adendorff told the Dominion Post newspaper.

the rear part of the car which didnt help the appearance, in fact it looked bloody awful. Like its much bigger brother the Countryman it has the same 1600cc four-cylinders, turbo charged of course, like the entire S range. But, with its John Cooper Works package, which is also available on the conventional Mini Cooper S, power is a whopping 208hp, more than enough to leave some rubber on the road. So, there you have it, two more Minis added to the range, The now full range of the Mini marque is the intermediates, Hatchback coupe and convertible, the little bigger Clubman, the much bigger Countryman and the wee JCW S coupe, and an upcoming JCW S convertible Roadster is planned for late 2012. Missing from the line is a Mini Cooper Van, I dont believe there is one planned, but I for one think that this could be a great and successful addition. The original Mini Van sold well in Europe and was very practical for the small tradesman advertising their businesses on the side paneling. Almost a van is the Clubman without the rear side windows, I cant imagine why they havent implemented a van conversion. There is no doubting the success of the new Minis though, a short while ago the two-millionth Mini popped off the production line, and its looking like there will be many more to follow. Time will tell if they can surpass Sir Alexs original Mini production figures, they made 5,387,862 of those in their various guises. There is one nice thing that the current Minis have going for them that the originals didnt you can have them built to the specifications of your choice, and there is a myriad of choices to be made. It is well worth the three months wait to have one built for you as opposed to picking one out of the dealers showroom. Some of the options can increase the base price quite considerably but its a choice you make. Build your own is the manner it is advertised, in fact the choices are so diversified that of the two-million Mini Coopers on the road I doubt is there are any two alike. Four years ago (time flies) I wrote an article on the Mini Cooper S after I had just bought one, I still have it and after four years of driving it I know the ins and outs of it as much as anyone, and in the next few months I will give you the low-down, the whole skinny on the car after my years of driving it. If you are considering buying one I promise you it will be worth reading, it might make or change your mind and could save you a few thousand bucks. Happy Motoring
I WONDER what Sir Alex Issigonis thoughts on the new 2012 Mini-Cooper-on-steroids would be? Turning in his grave possibly. Im referring to the Mini Countryman, which is the latest model in the very successful Mini Cooper range of products to hit the showrooms. In my wildest dreams I would have never imagined making a sports utility vehicle based on the Mini Cooper, but BWW, owners of the Mini marque, have done just that. My first look at the Countryman was when one pulled up alongside of me when, coincidentally, I was on my way to take my first look at that very model in the showroom. My first thought was that it looked pretty revolting, like as if some radically extensive customization had been done to a normal Mini Cooper, then I realized that it was a new stock Mini Countryman. The one I viewed later at in the showroom looked a bit less displeasing to my eye, probably because the wheels were smaller on the showroom model. The standard wheel size is 17, but 18 wheels are an option, and 19 wheels are a dealer option which blows the whole car out of proportion in my opinion just as it had done on the one that I saw on the road. There is no mistaking its SUV look alike connotations, with the roof side rails which are popular on many Sports Utility Vehicles these days. The Mercedes ML was the first to have these I believe, about 10 years ago, and since then they are pretty much standard on many of these vehicles, so the Mini SUV followed suit. To be honest, I have never quite figured out what the purpose of them is, as they seem to have no practical use, look like a partial roof rack, but cant be used as such. My wife drives a Mercedes ML, and we use it as a family car, but I have never figured out why it has these rails and now the big Mini has them too. This Mini oxymoron has increased somewhat proportionally to its smaller mentor:
JCW Coupe. 16 longer, four inches wider and six inches is ample for a lot of drivers. In fact, if you taller than the standard Mini Cooper, except havent noticed, on weekdays about 90 for the wheels which are two or three inches percent of the cars on the road only have a larger than the standard Mini. The spoiler rises automatically this maxi Mini loses much of the oomph of when the car reaches 50mph producing 88 its smaller cousin. The normally aspirated additional pounds of down-force to keep 1600cc four-cylinder engine has its work this puppy glued to the road. So, perhaps the way to a sloping rear line on this JCW coupe six-speed manual may be the better option hence the need to eliminate the rear seating, or go for the Turbo-charged S model with its luggage space however has increased. Union Jack this month welcomes our new Book Reviewer Lorraine Chambers. We hope you will enjoy Lorraines work as much as we do! Book Review of The 1926 Miners Lockout Meaning of Community in the Durham Coalfield by Hester Barron through Oxford University Press (2010). The Miners Lockout book is so packed with details from an extensive 21 pages of bibliography references of manuscript and archival sources. This book explores the relationship between class, region and nation, while arguing that the concept of community needs to be re-evaluated. The bookcover, a black and white photo of two young children walking by the dozens of miners on strike in South Shields, County Durham brings a snapshot of the connection of family and work. This book contains only six chapters amongst 272 pages. The first chapter covers many facets of this rough labor trade profession The Tensions of Class and Region with reminders of the suppression mixed with honour to be part of the compelling community of a pit village of miners and their families. New terms like blacklegs are mentioned throughout the book, which means scab due to crossing the protest line. One would think this book was written by an older male author yet the book is based on the doctoral thesis written by a young female. The author, Dr Hester Barron teaches at the University of Sussex as a Lecturer in History, having completed her D.Phil. at Magdalen College, Oxford. This is my first book review for the Union Jack newspaper which I have enjoyed as a reader for years. Next month I will review The Firm The Troubled Life of the House of Windsor by Penny Junor. I studied as a Comparative Literature major at UC Irvine during the mid 90s. Libraries are one of my favourite places. Books are friends that never fail us! Lorraine Chambers lorraine92627@ gmail.com

There are many others but I just have to have these, and it is great we can now get them at our local import shop or on line. So many British companies are also being bought up, the most controversial one being Kraft buying up Cadburys, promising not to close the main factory, but in the end did. There is a huge boycott in the UK by many in buying Cadburys products now because of it. Recently Twinings which is a 300-yearold company, decided to change their Earl Grey tea, by adding more bergamot and lemon to it. However there was such an avalanche of complaints that the company have gone back to the original version. Then I read in last weeks Daily Mail that Heinz are messing around with the HP Sauce sacrilege!!! Again this is another company that Kraft bought, and they decided to change the 100 year plus recipe by limiting the salt. Even famous chefs like Marco Pierre White complained about it! The sauce is made in Spain and Holland by an American company so I guess they could argue it isnt British any more. However I dont know why they think a good old favourite standard should be mucked about with changes! Somewhere in my collection of articles and recipes I had a recipe for the sauce, which I may have to dig out and experiment with, Cant imagine having bangers and mash without it!! Well this months recipe uses another British/Indian condiment, Major Grey chutney, which is great, but also if you can find the South African chutney Mrs Balls, that is superb too. Even though the recipe is not a

Even though I have lived a wonderful life here in the States for over 40 years, I still consider myself to be British, and despite being a from scratch cook, and love to experiment with different quality foods and meals, there are some items I just cant do without. For a long time we werent able to get British Foods unless our Mum sent them or we brought back with us from a trip. However I have always loved things like Birds Custard, Oxo, Bovril, Bisto, Marmite (love it or hate there is no in-between!), Dundee marmalade (although my friend Eileens homemade is terrific!) traditional British one, I felt the use of the chutney almost qualifies it to be at least honourary, plus it also uses Worcestershire sauce! I plan to feature chutney next month, and am currently experimenting with a couple of recipes. This recipe was adapted from an old fund raising cookbook I was given years ago, and it is always popular with both my Brit and American friends, I recently served it at the last Board meeting for the Sarasota British Club. Hope you enjoy my version, its very easy. I find Carrs water biscuits to be a good complement for the spread.

pop-culture imagery. Born in London in 1922, Hamilton studied at the Royal Academy Schools and the Slade School of Fine Art, and made his name in the 50s with Just What Is It That Makes Todays Homes So Different, So Appealing? A collage showing a physically idealized naked couple the man holding a red lollipop marked Pop in a product-strewn home, it was a seminal work of Pop Art. For half a century Hamilton produced images that were striking and often political, from Mick Jagger in handcuffs after a drug raid to portraits of prison protesters in Northern Ireland to an image of former British leader Blair as a cowboy in a 2007 piece entitled Shock and Awe. One of his best-known works is the antithesis of Pop Arts colorful cacophony: the monochrome cover of The Beatles White Album, a simple white square embossed with the bands name. Hamilton also designed the collage-style poster that came with the album. In an interview last year with The Guardian newspaper, Hamilton said he was surprised how little he was paid for the cover only 200. I thought that was a bit mean, he said. Hamilton also worked for decades on a mammoth project to illustrate James Joyces novel Ulysses. He told The Guardian that acclaim had come because Ive lived longer than all my peers. But others saw him as a major artistic gure. Tate director Nicholas Serota said Hamilton was one of the most inuential and distinctive artists of the postwar period. He is survived by his wife, Rita Donagh, and son Rod. Funeral details were not immediately available.

Somerset 127-9 at 20 overs. A full day of cricket at Edgbaston, witnessed the semi-finals played on the same day too, though rain interference saw the Duckworth/Lewis method used to determine the winners. Somerset beat Hampshire and Leicestershire beat Lancashire. Losing finalists Somerset, failed again at the Clydesbank 40 Final at Lords, September 17, where Surrey won by five wickets and rain forced the introduction of the D/L method. Somerset 214 at 39.2 overs. Surrey 189-5 at 27.3 overs. Andy Murray warmed up for the US Open at Flushing Meadows, New York, with his second ATP victory of the year after winning the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, Ohio, when Novak Djokovic pulled out half way through the final with an injury. The US Open, August 29-September 12, saw him power past Somdev Dewarmann of India, and after being two sets behind, beat the Dutchman, Robin Hasse in five sets. Next to go was Spains Feliciano Lopez, followed by Donald Young (US), while a two day rain stoppage did not halt the Scots momentum and he won a four setter in the quarter-finals over John Isner. The semi-finals saw him up against old rival Rafael Nadal, who has beaten Murray in their last two Grand Slam semis and did it for a third time with 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory. Novak Djokovic overwhelmed Nadal in the final 6-2,6-4, 6-7,6-1, during a battle that went over four hours. even though the Greeks missed a penalty, and, it had to be retaken, Spurs will consider this goalless game a triumph. Stoke looked to have Dynamo Kiev on the ropes after a Cameron Jerome netting in the 55th minute, but the hosts hit back in injury time, claiming a 1-1 draw. Fulham hosted FC Twente and Andrew Johnson put them in front in the 19th minute. Mark Schwarzer, unfortunately, deflected the ball in to his own net four minutes before half-time for a game that ended 1-1. Birmingham Citys second European home game in nearly fifty years ended sadly as Braga, came away 3-1 winners. The Blues were down after six minutes, and down two after 59 minutes. Marlon King got one in the 71st minute, but the Portuguese scored again with just two minutes left. More 2014 World Cup qualifiers were played last month, that included plenty of nettings across the globe. South Korea slammed Lebanon 6-0, Haiti may still have its earthquake problems, but demolished Curacao 6-0, and won the away leg 4-2. China traveled to Laos and won 6-1. Canada beat St Lucia 4-1. Antigua & Barbuda took the US Virgin Islands to task 5-2 and beat them 8-1 in the away leg. Australia playing in Saudi-Arabia won 3-1. An incredible penalty shootout in the Johnstone Paint Trophy, September 7, where Dagenham & Redbridge playing at Leyton Orient tied 1-1 after extra time, but won the game 14-13 on penalties. Paula Radcliffe was third in the Berlin Marathon, September 25, and though disappointed, did make the qualifying time for the 2012 Olympics with a run of two hours 23 minutes and 46 seconds. Radcliffe finished behind the winner Florence Kiplagat. It was her first Marathon since she ran fourth at the New York Marathon in 2009. In the mens race Patrick Makau of Kenya, set a world record of two hours three minutes and 38 seconds, beating the previous record time of Haile Gebrselassie. The Ethiopian had won the Berlin marathon four times previously, but dropped out this time with stomach problems. Brit Scott Overall finished fifth, with an Olympic qualifying time too. Mark Cavendish claimed the gold medal in the 266km road race in the World Road Cycling Championship in Copenhagen, September 1925. Its been 46 years since a British world road race champion. There was also Gold for Lucy Garner who won the womens junior road race, while Olympic champion Bradley Wiggins took silver in the time trial. New Australian skipper, Michael Clarke, steered the Antipodeans to a 1-0 series win over Sri Lanka, where he debuted in his first, Test match series. Australia won the first Test and drew the second and third Test matches at Colombo and Pallekele. The second round of the Carling Cup saw two premier sides hit the dust to lower division opponents with Sunderland losing 1-0 at Brighton, and Crystal Palace claiming a 2-1 home victory over Wigan. The third round, September 20-21, saw the big clubs holding their own. Manchester United won 3-0 at Leeds, Wolves slam Millwall 5-0 at Molyneaux, and Stoke edged Tottenham in a goalless game that the potters won 7-6 on penalties. Carling Cup holders Birmingham City tumbled out 2-0 against Manchester City at the Eastlands. Rangers financial situation is getting a public airing with the news that the club owes millions in unpaid taxes to the Inland Revenue. Since Craig Whyte, took over from Sir David Murray, as top shareholder the rumour mill has persisted. Recently, former CEO Martin Bain was granted a warrant by the Court of Session in Edinburgh, ordering 480,000 of the clubs assets be held in lieu of a 1.3m loan that Bain made but has not been paid back. The gossip continues. There was satisfaction on the pitch, September 17, however, when the Gers beat City rivals Celtic 4-2 at the Ibrox. Steven Naismith hit two, Nikica Jelavic and Lyle Lafferty added to the scoreline. Celtics Gary Hooper and Badr El Kaddouri were the marksmen for the Hoops, while Charlie Mulgrew got his marching orders five minutes after the break. Rangers led the SPL late September. The third round of the Scottish Communities League Cup, September 20-21, saw Cupholders Rangers ousted at Falkirk by a 3-2 result at the hands of the Bairns. The home side fielded ten teenagers. One stroke behind was David Lynn, and two distant Rory McIIroy. In Paris, September 15-18, the Great Britain and Ireland team beat Continental Europe 15.5 to 12.5 in the inaugural Seve Ballesteros Trophy. England edged closer to qualifying for the European Championships, where three first half goals at Sofia, saw Bulgaria beaten 3-0. Wayne Rooney hit two, one in the 21st minute and the other on half-time, while Gary Cahill snatched one in between. At Wembley, a 77,000 plus crowd watch an England side that did not sparkle, but a goal by Ashley Young in the 35th minute gave them a 1-0 result over Wales, and leaves them with just one point to qualify. Wales chances of qualifying are long indeed, but Welsh hearts beat a little faster at Cardiff, where a 2-1 win over Montenegro gave them their first victory in seven games and a chance to celebrate for new coach Gary Speed. Steve Morison forged a lead in the 29th minute while skipper Aaron Ramsey, made it two, five minutes after the break. The visitors hit back in the 71st minute, but the Welsh held on much to the delight of the 17,500 crowd. A last gasp penalty at Hampden Park, robbed Scotland of three points as the Czech Republic earned a 2-2 tie with a very, very late netting. Kenny Miller put the Scots in front one minute before the break, while the Czechs leveled it up in the 71st minute. Darren Fletcher scored the supposed winner seven minutes from time, before the controversial spot kick. A Steven Naismith goal five minutes after the break at Hampden gave the Scots a 1-0 win over Lithuania, although a missed penalty by Darren Fletcher would have improved the result. At Belfast, Northern Ireland let a sloppy back pass in the 67th minute lose them the game against Serbia. The opportunistic netting by Pantetic was enough to give the Serbs a 1-0 win. Away against Estonia, the Ulsterman went down 4-1, an own goal by Paio Piroja put the Irishmen on the scorecard. Goal-feast of the round saw the Netherlands slaughter San Marino 11-0, and Germany beat Austria 6-2, and then Liechtenstein 6-0. World Champions Spain were 0-2 down against Chile at a friendly in St Gallen, but came back to win 3-2. Disaster for the Chileans however, who returned to their hotel and found a thief had cleaned out their rooms. New US coach Jurgen Klinsman, was looking for his first victory, but did not find it at Carson, California. Costa Ricas Rodney Wallace found the American net in the 65th minute which gave the central American visitors a 1-0 win. Against Belgium in Brussels, Klinsmanns third game in charge saw him still awaiting his first win after a Nicolas Lombaart goal gave the hosts a 1-0 result. Former US manager Bob Bradley has signed to coach Egypt. Argentinas newly appointed coach Alejandro Sabbella, soon got down to business and made Lionel Messi the skipper. After a poor Copa America, the Argentines emerged in Kolkata, India, where a goal by Nicolas Otamendi in the 67 th minute witnessed Sabellas debut match produce a 1-0 win over Venezuela. The first matches of the group stage of the Champions League began September 13-14, with Manchester United forging a 1-1 draw in front of a 59,000 crowd at Benfica. The Portuguese went ahead in the 24th minute, while Ryan Giggs netted three minutes before the break for a scoreline that held. David Luiz and Juan Mata gave Chelsea a 2-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen at Stamford Bridge. Rangers went out on in the final qualifying round of the Europa League Cup, after a 1-3 losing aggregate against NK Maribor of Slovenia. Celtic however, got a second bite of the apple. After losing (1-3 agg) to Sion, UEFA expelled the Swiss side for using ineligible players. The start of the Europa Group games, September 15, saw the Hoops visit Atletico Madrid, where a 2-0 loss did not make coach Neil Lennon a happy man. Tottenham visited PAOK Salonica, and

The IAAFs recent updated ruling on false starts, had its repercussions at the World Track & Field Championships at Daegu, South Korea, August 27-September 4, where some twenty athletes who jumped the gun were immediately disqualified. No second chances. One false start and you were out. British Olympic 400m champion Christine Ohuruoga, Dwain Chambers, and world record holder Usain Bolt of Jamaica, who planned on keeping his 100m title, were all false started and ousted in the qualifiers. Bolt later won the 200m gold. Disappointment raged for Britain at the Championships however, where medals proved a difficult commodity. Dai Greene got Britain off on the Gold medal trail by winning the 400m hurdles, while world heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis, had to be satisfied with silver behind Tatyana Chernova of Russia. Hannah England produced a fiery finish in the 1500m to collect the silver medal, while Andy Turner took bronze in the 110m hurdles. Japan Indy, September 17, Franchittis Target Chip Ganessi team-mate, Scott Dixon took the chequered flag, Power was second and the Scot eighth. Just two more races will decide the IndyCar championship with Power on 542pts, and reigning IndyCar champion Franchitti with 531pts. Britain topped the medal table at the World Rowing Championships in Bled, Slovenia, August 28-September 4, with seven Gold, three silvers and four bronze. Katherine Grainger and Anna Walker captured Britains first gold in the double sculls, while Kieron Emery and Peter Chambers took gold in the mens lightweight pairs, and the womens lightweight quadruple scull scored gold also. FABIO CAPELLO says England players are still struggling with a problem in their heads that is proving impossible to solve. The coach was frustrated by Englands dismal display in Euro 2012 qualifying last month when the fourth-ranked team labored to a 1-0 victory over Wales, ranked 117th. Capello says he knew even before kickoff that his players would struggle based on how they looked in the pre-match warmup. Asked why he couldnt find a solution back in the dressing room, Capello replied: I tried to do, I spoke with the players but it is impossible the team that I saw to change. It is impossible. Pressed on the problem, the Italian said: It was not to change the shirt. Pointing to his head, Capello complained: Here is the problem.

t involving Armand Traore, two brought the Rs a 1-1 home draw with Aston Villa. Traore was adjusted to have committ the foul by which Villa took ted a 1-0 lead before being sent off in the 89th minute, but a Heidar Helguson cross eventually brought a reward for QPRs 19-11 edge in shots. Captain Joey Barton scored his first goal for the club in a 3-0 rout of Wolves at Molineux; he converted a cross from Shaun Wright-Phillips in the eight minute, and two minutes later Alejandro Faurlins strike doubled the lead. Substitute DJ Campbell opened his Rs account by tucking away Traores pass. Stoke City The Potters ended Manchester Uniteds perfect start to the season by earning a 1-1 draw. Peter Crouch blasted his first goal for the club from a Matt Etherington corner kick after attempts by Andy Wilkinson and Jonathan Walters had been thwarted. A run of nine games unbeaten in all competitions ended with a 4-0 loss at Sunderland that included a Jonathan Woodgate own goal. A Walters penalty kick downed Liverpool, 1-0, to preserve Stokes unbeaten record against the club since moving up to the Premier League. Sunderland After scoring just two goals in their first five matches, the Black Cats drilled Stoke City, 4-0, for their first win of the season. Titus Bramble scored his first Sunderland goal in the fifth minute and after an own goal, Craig Gardner made it 3-0 with a deflected shot and Sebastian Larsson curled home a free kick before the hour mark. Poor marking cost the Black Cats at Norwich City, who scored twice before substitute Kieran Richardsons late goal halved the deficit to 2-1, which lasted until the final whistle. Swansea City Ashley Williams grabbed a consolation goal in the 86th minute in a 4-1 loss at Chelsea in which the Swans played a man up for the second half but couldnt exploit the advantage. They ended their Premier League goal drought in emphatic fashion by pummeling West Bromwich Albion, 3-0. Scott Sinclairs penalty kick stopped the goalless clock at 374 minutes, Leroy Lita nodded home his first goal for the club, and Nathan Dyer added a third as manager Brendan Rodgers side posted their third straight home shutout. Tottenham Hotspur Rafael Van der Vaart opening the scoring and Gareth Bale netted to end a 14-match league scoring drought as Spurs beat Wigan, 2-1. Emmanuel Adebayor squared a ball for Van der Vaart to lash home and Bale doubled the lead midway through the first half by heading a goal from Luka Modrics corner kick. Adebayor scored twice on his home debut after Modric and Defoe had opened up a 2-0 lead as Spurs battered a nine-man Liverpool, 4-0. Goals by Adebayor and Defoe after more than an hour of scoreless play earned a 2-0 victory at Wolverhampton. West Bromwich Albion Goalie Ben Foster salvaged a 0-0 tie with Fulham by thwarting John Arne Riise and Bryan Ruiz with an excellent double-save. Chris Brunt had a powerful header saved and in stoppage time nailed a low shot narrowly wide. Peter Odemwingie failed to convert a penalty kick but his earlier goal sufficed for WBA to win, 1-0, at Norwich. Odemwingie scored in the third minute after a Nicky Shorey long ball prompted a poor back pass the striker poked into the net. Wigan Athletic Mohamed Diame scored to cut a 2-0 deficit at Spurs in half, but the Latics lost all chance of salvaging a point when Steve Gohouri went off with a second yellow card for a clumsy challenge and lost, 2-1. Franco diSantos goal in the 31st minute pushed Wigan briefly into a 1-0 lead at Everton; after allowing a quick equalizer, they held out at 1-1 until the 84th minute, then conceded again in stoppage time of a 3-1 defeat. Wolverhampton Steven Fletchers goal early in the second half brought Wolves to within 2-1 at Liverpool after a Roger Johnson header had glanced into his own net for one of Liverpools goals, but a Christophe Berra header that narrowly missed the target was as close as they would get to an equalizer. Keeper Wayne Hennesseys brave saves against Emile Heskey and Gabriel Agbonhalor produced a 0-0 draw at Aston Villa that gave Wolves seven points from their first three league matches.

Aiyegbeni scored in the 25th and 59th minutes as Rovers rallied from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits in a match preceded by a march of fans demanding the dismissal of manager Steve Kean. Bolton Ivan Klasnic was sent off for an apparent head-butt and though the 10-man Trotters managed a penalty kick by Martin Petrov it was not enough to avert a 2-1 home loss to promoted Norwich. An excellent save repelled substitute David Ngogs fierce header in stoppage time. David Wheater went off with a red card for a professional foul 10 minutes into the second half at Arsenal, and Wanderers surrendered two more goals in a 3-0 defeat. Chelsea Fernando Torres scored his second goal in as many games before being sent off as Chelsea downed Swansea City, 4-1. Ramires added the second and third Chelsea goals, the second coming after Torres was punished for a two-footed lunge on Mark Gower. Didier Drogba celebrated his return to the lineup with a goal in the final moments. Torres scored at Old Trafford but also fired wide from close range in a 3-1 loss to Manchester United. Everton With the third goal of his four-year stint at Everton, Phil Jagielka equalized two minutes after Everton had gone behind against Wigan, and late goals by Apostolos Vellios and Royston Drenthe brought a 3-1 win. Prior to kickoff, Louis Saha tweeted his displeasure of being left out of the team and left the premises. Everton surrendered a pair of one-goal leads at home provided by Leon Osman and Leighton Baines as they tied Aston Villa, 2-2. Kasami knocked in the rebound of a saved Clint Dempsey shot but did so from an offside position. Goals by Bobby Zamora and Danny Murphy brought them back from a 2-0 deficit against Manchester City to earn a 2-2 draw. Zamora got the equalizer in a 1-1 draw with Blackburn in which new signing Bryan Ruiz debuted following a 10.6m move from FC Twente. Liverpool Luis Suarez scored his fourth goal of the season in a 2-1 victory against Wolverhampton that ended a dismal run of defeats. Charlie Adams wayward shot was deflected into the Wolves net to give Liverpool a 1-0 lead and Suarezs goal, set up by a neat touch to unbalance a defender, turned out to be the winner. Liverpool finished with nine men in a 4-0 loss at Tottenham. Charlie Adam picked up a second yellow card for a late foul on Scott Parker and Martin Skrtel was dismissed for two second-half cautions. Manchester City Mario Balotelli and James Milner came off the bench to score the goals by which City beat Everton, 2-0. Balotelli broke open a 0-0 stalemate by latching onto Sergio Agueros back-heel to hit a shot was deflected on its way Agueros shot hit the post moments later, and Milner sealed victory in the final minute by running clear to steer David Silvas through ball into the net. Aguero scored twice within six minutes while recording his first Premier League hat trick as City destroyed Wigan, 3-0. Manchester United A perfect start to the season ended with a 1-1 draw at Stoke City. Javier Hernandez departed because of an injury early in the match and Nani scored in the 15th minute to claim a 1-0 lead. Ryan Giggs narrowly missed snagging a winner in stoppage time. United overpowered Chelsea, 3-1, with goals by Chris Smalling, Nani and Wayne Rooney his ninth of the season even though Rooney slipped while taking a penalty and scuffed his shot embarrassingly wide. Ba scored three minutes apart in the first half and connected again after Rovers had scored to close the gap to 2-1. Leon Bests goal 12 minutes into the second half brought the Magpies a 1-1 draw at Aston Villa. Norwich City The third home match was a charm for the Canaries, which beat Sunderland, 2-1, with goals by Leon Barnett and Steve Morison after a draw and a defeat in their first two games at Carrow Road. Anthony Pilkington and Bradley Johnson tallied six minutes apart late in the first half to secure the Canaries a 2-1 win at Bolton, their first road triumph in the Premier League since they won at Crystal Palace in 1994. They fell behind in the third minute and lost at home to West Bromwich Albion, 1-0, despite a superb penalty-kick save by Declan Rudd. Englands last 2012 European Championship qualifier at Montenegro this month and a potential November playoff. My ankle is little bit sore, but Im already looking forward to working hard to get fit and playing again, Wilshere said. Citys FA Cup final win over Stoke its first major trophy since 1976 and the clubs qualification for the Champions League for the first time. I feel totally recharged and as fit as Ive ever been in my life, Toure told Citys website. Hopefully, it will be like having a new signing because I am back and want to challenge for a first-team place. I know it wont be easy because the team is playing so well, but Ill be pushing hard for an opportunity.
SUNDERLAND defender Titus Bramble has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and drug possession. Police arrested the 30-year-old player September 29 in Cleveland, outside Middlesbrough, and he was being held for questioning. Sunderland says the club is looking into this matter but due to ongoing police investigations is unable to comment further at this stage. Bramble was arrested over an alleged rape in a Newcastle hotel last year but was released without charge. In 2002, charges against Bramble, Carlton Cole and Kieron Dyer for the alleged gangrape of a 17-year-old girl were dropped because of insufficient evidence.
ARSENAL midfielder Jack Wilshere will be out until at least January after undergoing ankle surgery last month. The Premier League club said the early indications were that the operation to repair a stress fracture in Wilsheres right ankle was a success. It is envisaged that Jacks rehabilitation will take a period of four to five months, Arsenal said on its website. The 19-year-old England international sustained the injury in June and hasnt played since it flared up again in a preseason game against the New York Red Bulls. Not only will Wilshere miss Arsenals entire Champions League group stage, but also
ENGLAND coach Fabio Capello raised concerns about striker Andy Carrolls lifestyle last month, advising the countrys most expensive player to curb his drinking. Carroll was bought by Liverpool from Newcastle for 35m in January and is yet to establish himself as a regular starter for club or country. The 22-year-old Carroll was not even named as a substitute in Sofia as England beat Bulgaria 3-0 in qualifying for the 2012 European Championship. He is not at the top of his form, Capello said ahead of last months qualifier against Wales, and said: If he wants to be a good player and a good sportsman, he needs to drink less than the others, Capello said inside Wembley Stadium. I spoke with him. It was a private discussion between two people. He understands a lot. He is young. We need to help him. We need to speak with him because he is a really important player.
AFTER completing a six-month doping ban for taking his wifes diet pills, Kolo Toure returned to action for Ivory Coast last month desperate to make up for lost time. The Manchester City center back failed a drugs test in March after taking pills that contained an unidentified banned substance. The 30-year-old Toure avoided the maximum two-year ban but still missed out on
REAL MADRID coach Jose Mourinho has donated a coaching trophy awarded for his treble-winning season with Inter Milan for auction in memory of mentor Bobby Robson. Former England and Barcelona manager Robson died of lung cancer two years ago at age 76. Proceeds of the sale of the FIFA coach of the year award Mourinho won in 2010 will go to the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and Breakthrough Breast Cancer. Mourinho had a low-key playing career and his break in football came as a result of being hired as an interpreter for Robson at Sporting Lisbon in 1992. Robson took Mourinho with him when he was hired as coach of Porto and the duo also worked together at Barcelona during the 1996-97 season.
