GROUP DISCUSSION
Was the backlash against Maria Sharapova by Indian netizens
justified?
Yes
Being a world renowned sporting celebrity, it is
expected that she knows her fellow sportsmen
Having a huge fan base in India, antagonizing the
Indian sporting community would be justified since
many in India consider Sachin to be a national
legend
After the fact that Sachin had come to attend
Sharapova's Wimbledon match, it would be
reasonable for fans to expect her to know who
Sachin Tendulkar is
No
The image of Indians across the world would be that
of crazy fanatics after the backlash and would
definitely have a detrimental effect on Indians all
over the world
Only around 12 countries play professional cricket in
the world and it would be unreasonable for any
Russian to expect to know good cricket players, no
matter how famous they are in their home countries
It would be rare for any of the Indians who put
venomous comments online to know any of the
hockey players/women cricket players/ football
players in India, let alone any famous
rugby/polo/Olympic athletes the world over
GROUP DISCUSSION
Was Facebook's emotional contagion experiment ethically or
morally justified?
Yes
In this digital age, it is crucial to know the effect of
digital space on human behaviour. Such experiments
must be encouraged to get a deeper understanding of
the human behaviour with respect to social media
Facebook has all the right to conduct any experiment
since it is their intellectual property and as long as no
people are hurt physically or mentally. Many sites
conduct experiments to figure out ways to enhance
clicks and grab eye balls
The results of this experiment would go a long way in
determining the type of content to put in the digital
space which would prove invaluable for social media
companies in the near future
No
Facebook has no right to mess around emotions of its
users and it is highly unethical of them to conduct
experiments on them without their knowledge
Experiments on this scale require permissions from
governing bodies which FB did not take. This could
prove to be a bad precedence for other sites to
conduct experiments on their users obliviously
If any brick & mortar company were to conduct similar
experiments with their products or services, it would
have had to face strict government action and severe
blowback from ethics committees. Why must web
space companies be exempt from moral or ethical
guidelines?
GROUP DISCUSSION
What is more important to business: Technology or People?
Technology
Cutting edge products are what drive demand
Technology helps in cutting costs, e.g.,
automation and thus contributes to
improved profits
It is the technology that stays with the company,
people leave
People
It is the people who produce the technology
The Company which markets a technology better
wins the race. It is the people who market the
technology
The Company which attracts top talent stays on
top
Take, for instance, Microsoft and Google. In 1990s
Microsoft attracted top talent, thus it was doing
great business. In 2000s top talent preferred
Google over Microsoft and that impacted
Microsofts revenues
Reality
Recent trial of Indias fastest Train on Delhi-Agra
route at 160 km/h (average speed of bullet rain is
350 km/h)
Pet project of the new Prime Minister
Countries much smaller than India including
Taiwan, Turkey, South Korea have developed high-
speed trains
High speed trains reduce travel time by 30%
Hype
Question marks over financial viability, as the
project is capital intensive
The cost of developing high speed corridor
between Mumbai-Ahmedabad is 70,000 crore
Railways are struggling to develop infrastructure
(only 9000 km of tracks have been added since
1947), safety remains major concern
Importing expensive trains to run them at slower
speeds on mixed Indian tracks could hugely
impact Indias long term plans
GROUP DISCUSSION
