Abstract (summary)
Kearney will make the point that Ireland was used to the problems of poverty and lack of wealth which
"created a cohesion for the mass of society".
British supermarket Tesco appears to be making strong inroads in the Irish groceries market, judging by new
research that will be presented at a conference this week.
About two out of three shoppers said they did their main household shopping at Tesco, compared with just 39
per cent who used Dunnes Stores.
German discounter Lidl ranked in third position with 22 per cent of interviewees saying they did their main
shopping there.
Some 19 per cent of shoppers said they did their main shopping at SuperValu, while 16 per cent favoured
German discounter Aldi, according to the research from leading market research consultancy Amarach.
Eleven per cent of shoppers said they did their main shopping at Superquinn, while 5 per cent favoured Marks
& Spencer.
Tesco and Marks & Spencer were the supermarkets most associated with ready meals, while Superquinn was
the most associated with fresh food, Irish food and meat traceability.
The research will be unveiled at the Efficient Consumer Response conference, which takes place at the O'Reilly
Hall in UCD on Thursday.
Jane Kearney, research director at Amarach Consulting, will tell the conference that Ireland has never had it so
good. "We are in a place that is so advanced that previous generations did not even dream about it," said
Kearney.
She is predicting strong economic growth and increasing consumer confidence this year, boosted by SSIAs.
However, she will warn that there are "issues with competitiveness in some sectors of the economy, which
over-dependence on building masks.
"We face challenges in relation to productivity and competitiveness, infrastructure provision and government
services," she will tell the conference.
"The core issue in the next election is not the unlimited supply of funding, but our ability to extract value from

Kearney will make the point that Ireland was used to the problems of poverty and lack of wealth which
"created a cohesion for the mass of society".
"How well equipped socially are we to deal with the problems of affluence and inherited wealth?" Kearney will
ask.
In other findings, Amarach says the Irish population will increase to 4.5 million by 2010, with the 25-45 group
emerging as Ireland's fastest-growing age group.
However, in the medium term, there may be tough times ahead for marketers selling to the youth market, as
the 18-29 age group is set to shrink in size by 11.5 per cent from 2015.
