IMPORTANCE OF NEIGHBORS IN ISLAM AND DAWAH

The duty of calling towards Allah starts from oneself, then his family, then his relatives,
then the society he is living in and then the rest of humanity. One of the important
members of the society about whom Allah orders us to have good relations with is our
neighbors.

Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good,
and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor
farther away, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom
your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not like those who are self-
deluding and boastful.
(Surah An-Nisa-36)

Each and every Muslim is required to convey the message of Islam to all people. Allah
SWT says in Quran:

And who is better in speech than one who invites to Allah and does
righteousness and says, "Indeed, I am of the Muslims."
(Surah Fussilat-33).

The importance of rights of neighbors can be understood from a hadith of Prophet
Mohammad (PBUH):

Hadith
Narrated Abu Shuraih: The Prophet said, "By Allah, he does not believe! By Allah, he
does not believe! By Allah, he does not believe!" It was said, "Who is that, O Allah's
Apostle?" He said, "That person whose neighbor does not feel safe from his evil."
(Sahih Bukhari-Volume 8, Book 73, Number 45).

A Muslim should maintain good relations with his neighbors irrespective of their
religion. Besides maintaining good relationships, the best favor we can do for ourselves,
our families and our neighbors is to save them from hell fire on the Day of Judgment by
conveying the true message of Islam.

BENEFITS, GUIDELINES AND PROCESS

BENEFITS
1. Encourages participation by more and more community members to fulfill the
obligation of Dawah.
2. Anyone can do it from the comfort of their home.
3. Spreads the cost of Dawah across the board and makes it affordable for most of
us.
4. Enhances effectiveness as an increasingly larger number of people will receive the
message at the grass roots level on an ongoing basis.

PROCESS
1. Get the addresses of your neighbors by going on to www.zillow.com and type in
your address to start the search. Click on properties next to yours to get the
addresses. There may be other websites to get this information for free. Or, drive
around in your neighborhood and write down the addresses.
2. Similar process as above can be followed with discretion and good judgment for
businesses, offices and apartments as well. Many commercial properties may
have suites and one may have to go inside and get the suite numbers from the
directory in the lobby of the building. Apartment complexes may have many
buildings with their own addresses. One would have to write down apartment
numbers in each building. Many apartment complexes have maps inside the
main entrance.
3. Make a list of at least 50 neighbors to begin with and add more if you can.
4. Print labels or type addresses by hand on the envelopes. Use following address as
sender in order to protect your privacy and safety: WhyIslam Sacramento, PO
Box 1353, Orangevale, Ca 95662
5. Order or obtain WhyIslam brochures from our Chapter by emailing us at sac-
shura@whyislamsc.org . Cost of each brochure is about ten cents if you would
like to pay for it.
6. Sign up with our Chapter by emailing us at sac-shura@whyislamsc.org to let us
know that you are doing this so that we can help and advise as needed. Besides,
this will help us in putting you in touch with your neighbor once they call our toll
free hotline 1 877 WhyIslam or email us at www.WhyIslam.org in response to
your mailing them the brochures.
7. If you are uncomfortable to talk to your neighbor once they contact us, then we
can assign someone from among our gender appropriate volunteers to reach out
to them.
8. Mail one or two brochures at a time along with the enclosed sample cover letter.
It is illegal to open someone elses mailbox and deliver directly. All mailings must
go through the US Postal Service with proper postage due.

9. Cost of mailing two brochures including postage stamp, envelope and copy of
cover letter is estimated to be 75 cents per neighbor. Cost of mailing to 50
neighbors is only $37.50!
10. Repeat the mailings every three months with brochures on different topics.
11. Keep a log of brochures mailed in each campaign to avoid duplication if needed.
12. 500 community members participating in this campaign and mailing to 100
neighbors each will reach 50,000! If youre interested in a larger campaign in
your zip code, please contact us.
13. We are planning to maintain a database of all mailings. Please share your
database with us to enable us to match and contact you in case any of your
neighbors are interested to learn more.
14. If you need help in understanding details of this project or have any questions,
simply call 1-877-WHY-ISLAM, select Option 7 and an associate will help you
with the details.

SAFETY
Due to prevailing circumstances as some members of the general public we try to reach
may behave unpredictably, we do not recommend doing Dawah door to door for this
particular project. This mailing campaign helps in reaching out to the neighbors in a
decent, educated and well informed manner without sacrificing safety. Once the
neighbors show interest and have responded via the hotline or email, we should be
happy to meet those who are sincere and serious in learning about Islam.

IN A NUTSHELL

This campaign has a specific purpose and that is to share the message of Islam starting
out with our neighbors. Let us continue to improve to be good neighbors by greeting
them, sharing food and letting them know that we care if they need us Inshaallah!
