First hour

Summary:

• The hospital will not allow large groups of visitors because of swine flu
scares and the cost of training everyone. Instead of this, we are going to
ask students if there is another group of people that they would like to read
to, and give them the option of skyping with Mr. Elate's class. They would
be able to read books to the class via skype or video camera based on a
theme that they choose. They could possibly team up with 6th hour, and
have the theme be about bullying.
• Another option would be for students to help organize the "moving literacy"
display piece. They can create short works of fiction to put on it, organize
the visual display, and maybe have a reading of their pieces while showing
off the display.

• I will bring in information about volunteering at hospitals for those who are
interested.

Summary:

• Starting next quarter, this class will create new student kits for students
that come to Edison.
• New students already recieve Edison folders, pens, and bookmarks, as well
as information about clubs, policies, and teachers names/room numbers.
Students in this class can write a letter to new students to include in the
packet that talks a little bit about the climate of Edison, what students like
about Edison, who they are, etc... We can also think of more helpful
supplies to include in the packet. Pamela suggested a map of the school, a
page about the history of Edison, a list of winter sporting events, and a map
of where buses pick students up - if we do this, Pamela would like it ready
for the Nov. 17 Edison showcase.
