World Suicide Prevention Day

Suicide is a major public health problem. Te psychologic-
al pain that leads each of these individuals to take their lives
is unimaginable. Teir deaths leave families and friends be-
ref, and ofen have a major ripple efect on communities.
Suicide is the ffh leading causes of death among those
aged 30-49 years in 2012 globally, and is the second lead-
ing cause of death in the 15-29 years age group in 2012
globally. Overall, it is estimated that during 2012 for each
adult who died of suicide there were 27 others who made
suicide attempts.
Te International Association for Suicide Prevention
(IASP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are
committed to preventing suicide. Tese organizations rec-
ognize World Suicide Prevention Day as an important day
in the international calendar. World Suicide Prevention Day
brings together individuals and organizations with an inter-
est in suicide prevention, and mobilizes eforts to save lives.
Discussing suicide openly and frankly and reaching out
to those who have become disconnected from others may
be a life-saving act. If you are at risk or know of someone
who might be thinking of suicide, let them know there is

Community in Nel-
son. Judy was born
in Mufundi, Tan-
zania, the youngest
of three children.
She had many fond
memories of her
childhood on a cof-
fee and tea plan-
tation. Her family
was forced to return
to Germany during
World War II. Judy even-
tually took an agriculture
course, then later moved to
Canada and received train-
ing as a practical nurse in
Sarnia, Ontario.
Judy was baptized as one
of Jehovahs Witnesses in
1963. She moved to Kaslo
in 1978, where she became
known for her loving gen-
erosity. She lived a very
modest, environmentally
friendly lifestyle, nurturing
her small garden, teach-
ing others about the Bi-

Call for 2014 Project Proposals
The Grassland and Rangeland Enhancement Program (GREP)
provides funds to persons and organizations wishing to carry
out activities on Crown Land that will enhance Rangeland and
Grassland values.
The program is funded by the Columbia Basin Trust and
administered locally by the Kootenay Livestock Association.
The GREP is currently accepting project proposals for consid-
eration for the remainder of 2014 and for the upcoming 2015
funding year.
The overriding purpose of the Grassland and Rangeland En-
hancement Program is to maintain and/or enhance grassland
resources while meeting conservation, environmental and
recreational objectives.
Some examples of projects funded to date under the GREP
include rangeland fences, protection of wetlands, innovative
gates and cattle-guards, restoration of damaged areas, inter-
pretive and educational signs and invasive plant management.
Applications are open to associations or societies, individuals,
range tenure holders or partnerships across the Columbia
Basin Region.

Columbia Basin Trust is reaching out to identify small-
to medium-sized local and regional Internet service pro-
viders (ISPs) that are interested in expanding connectivity
and/or upgrading existing infrastructure to meet new fed-
eral standards for broadband in the Columbia Basin and
Boundary regions. Tis appeal is being done in cooper-
ation with the Regional Broadband Committee, com-
prised of the regional districts of Central Kootenay, Koo-
tenay Boundary, East Kootenay and Columbia Shuswap,
the Village of Valemount and the Ktunaxa Nation Council.
Trough the Digital Canada 150: Connecting Can-
adians initiative, the Canadian government has recently

Conservation Ofered $10,000 Prize
BC Hydro is ofering $10,000 awards to non-proft com-
munity organizations that are committed to making a dif-
ference around sustainability, conservation and environ-
mental leadership. Te 2014 Community Champions
program is open to non-proft organizations across Brit-
ish Columbia, and fve winners will be awarded $10,000
each. British Columbians will help determine the fnalist
through online voting.
All video submissions must be in the form of a two to
three-minute video and be uploaded to bchydro.com/
communitychampions by September 30. Participants
are also encouraged to share their conservation initiative
or show support for their favourite non-proft on social
media using the hashtag #BCHCommunityChampions.
BC Hydro will select 15 semi-fnalists and then the pub-
lic will determine fve fnalists by voting for their favourite
videos between October 15 and November 30. BC class-
rooms are also welcome to vote for a winner. By voting,
each class will be entered in a draw to win $1000 for a
sustainability project in their school.
Last years Community Champions showcased a wide range
of sustainability projects, ranging from a public bus service
on Gabriola Island that is lowering vehicle emissions to a
camp in Kelowna that teaches children how to protect the
environment by reducing waste and saving water and energy.

When Aurlien Dupuis ar-
rived in Nelson in 1991 re-
tiredwith children grown the
time had come: he would fulfl
a lifelong dream to become a
writer. Drawing from infuen-
ces from his French Canadian
farmstead childhood in Nol-
ville, Ontario, a working life in
the trades as a steamftter, and
a love of rural life and nature Dupuis went on to write 18
books in French for children and adults.
Dupuis launches his newest novel, Armand et Ginette ou
le plaisir daimer, on Tursday, September 11 at 7:00 pm
at the Nelson Public Library. Te presentation, hosted in
partnership with lAssociation des francophones des Koo-
tenays Ouest (AFKO), will be in French.
A launch for a new book by Aurelien Dupuis is long over-
due, says Nelson library adult service coordinator Anne De-
Grace. Hes so well-known and well-liked in this commun-
ity. Its a pleasure to be able to launch Armand et Ginette, and
to partner with AFKO, who has been such a help in develop-
ing our contemporary French language collection.
Armand et Ginette takes place during Qubecs quiet
revolution during the 1960s, a time of change in the Cath-
olic Churchs infuence on Francophone society. As the
modern world encroaches on tradition, Armand bound
for the priesthood from a tender age is faced with num-
erous obstacles, while what Ginette wants most is to win
Armands heart.
Book lovers will get a hint or two at the launch, as well
as enjoy book and informational displays by the library
and AFKO. Refreshments will be served, and books by
Aurelien Dupuis will be available for purchase.

Catch Dinner!
August has been a
great month for fshing
rainbows in Kootenay
Lake. A friend of mine
loves to fsh around
Woodbury Creek. Sev-
eral times a week she
grabs her kayak, heads
out just a little ofshore
and throws out a line.
On August 20 she
caught a beauty. Here is
the fsh! she exclaimed,
hoisting it in front of me
with only two fngers
tucked into the gills of a
whopper. Not bad eh!
From a kayak 30 inches,
14 to 16 lbs. Not sure my
weight scale is spot
on, so cannot be too
exact. Still, a lovely
fsh. I had to agree.
Te weekend be-
fore, my brother and
I had dinner at JBs
Restaurant & Pub
at Woodbury, and
chanced to overhear
a conversation about
fshing on Koote-
nay Lake. A couple
of tourists (I didnt
catch where they
were from) were
exclaiming about
their tremendous
fshing experience.
Tey said that afer
two hours, they had
caught 15 beauties, none under
fve pounds. Perfect eating fsh!
Teyll be back to Kootenay
Lake and Rainbow Country
next year, hoping for a repeat of
their holiday.

A longtime resident of Nelson, Kaslo, Comox,
and most recently Courtenay, Douglas Vincent
Askew passed away peacefully and quietly at
the Comox Valley Seniors Village on 14 August
2014. He had been a resident there since
February of this year. Doug was in his 91st year
and was still able to manage his life, and death,
with the utmost dignity and respect.
Doug was born in Bootle, England. His char-
acter was formed by his loving parents and the
incredible lifetime bond he enjoyed with his
brothers Cyril, Robert and Eric. It was forged
in the fres of WWII, frst in the Home Guard
as a teenaged frst responder to the bombing
raids in England, and later as a Lancaster Flight
Engineer fying with 419 Squadron, 6 Bomber
Group. He completed a full operational tour
in 1944 fying 30 missions over enemy territo-
ry, surviving where most did not, and he later
few missions in the Far East.
After the war Dougs character was further
polished and nurtured by the love of his life, his wife Georgina (Jean).
Doug and Jean followed the lead of his brother Eric and immigrated to Canada in 1948. Doug
frst worked at the Reeves MacDonald Mine at Remac BC, near Salmo, and later at the Cassiar Mine
and Kootenay Forest Products in Nelson. In 1970 he started with the Workers Compensation Board
of BC, eventually moving to Steveston to become one of the boards directors. Doug and Jean
maintained ties to the Kootenays, and upon his retirement they moved to Kaslo where they built
their dream home on the Kaslo River.
Following Jeans death he moved to Comox in 2008. In his fnal months, Doug charmed the
staf at the Seniors Village and was their favourite. He did this through his outstanding sense of
humour, his gentlemanly demeanour, and his sincere respect for others. Even though faced with
many medical challenges, Doug would always do his utmost to help himself, and he would never,
never complain.
A dear aunt shared a comment Doug recently sent to her after the death of another family
member. He wrote ...... life is a highway that we all travel and must leave when called. Since the war
I have cherished every day. I am in my 90th year and grateful for it, and am not afraid of the call.
Keep strong.
Doug is survived by his three sons, Graham, Ron and Wayne and their spouses, numerous
grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces.
He donated his remains to the University of British Columbia Medical School. A memorial will be
held in his honour at Kaslo BC in the fall. Like all of you, we shall miss him terribly, but know that he
had lived his life to the fullest. We should all be as lucky.
