Sample Quantitative Aptitude Questions

1) The percentage of numbers from 11 to 75 which are divided by 5 or 7 is:

a) 31 b) 35 c) 36 d) 41

Answer : a) 31

Solution:

Clearly, the numbers which divided by 5 or 7 from 11 to 75 are 14, 15, 20, 21, 25, 28, 30, 35,
40, 42, 45, 49, 50, 55, 56, 60, 63, 65, 70, 75.
The number of such numbers = 20
Total numbers from 11 to 75 = 65
Then the required percentage = (20/65) x 100 = 30.76% = 31 %
Hence the answer is 31%

2) If A has weight 9kg more than B and his weight is 56% of the sum of their weights
then their weights are :

a) 31,40 b) 33,42 c) 36,45 d) 41,50

Answer: b) 33,42

Solution:

Let B's weight be X then A's weight is X+9.
And,
X+9 = 56% of X+X+9 = 56/100 (2X+9)
25(X+9)= 14(2X+9)
3X = 99 => X=33 and X+9 = 42
So, their weights are 33kg,42kg

3) Find the odd man out : 1900, 1876, 1855, 1837, 1821, 1810, 1801
a) 1855 b) 1837 c) 1821 d) 1900
Answer: c)1821

Solution:

The above series is formed by subtracting multiples of 3 starting from 24 in reverse order.
1900 - 24 = 1876
1876 - 21 = 1855
1855 - 18 = 1837
1837 - 15 = 1822
1822 - 12 = 1810 ... and so on.

The odd one is 1821 which has to be 1822.

4) Find the odd man out : 28, 29, 60, 123, 736, 3685
a) 29 b) 123 c) 736 d) 3685
Answer: b)123

Solution:

The given series are in the following form,

28 x 1 + 1 = 29
29 x 2 + 2 = 60
60 x 3 + 3 = 183
183 x 4 + 4 =736
736 x 5 + 5 =3685

Instead of 183, 123 is given in the series. So 123 is the odd one.

5) Veer invested an amount of Rs.9000 for 2 years at a compound interest rate 15%
per annum. How much amount will Veer obtain as interest?

a) Rs.2902.50 b) Rs.2900.50 c) Rs.2899.50 d) Rs.2899

Answer: a) Rs.2902.50

Solution:

When interest is compounded Annually, we have to use the following formula:

Amount = P x [1+ (R/100)]n where P = principal, R = rate of interest and n =
time(years) Here P = Rs.9000, R = 15%, n = 2 years.
Then, Amount= Rs.9000 x [1 + (15/100)]2 = 9000 x (23/20)2 = 23805/2 = Rs.11902.5

The amount obtained by the way of interest in compound interest = Amount - principal
= Rs.(11902.5 - 9000) = Rs.2902.50

Hence the required answer is Rs.2902.50

6) What is the difference between the compound interests on Rs.10,000 for 2 years at 5%
per annum compounded yearly and half-yearly?

a)Rs.6.00 b)Rs.6.25 c)Rs.6.50 d)Rs.6.75

Answer: b) Rs.6.25

Solution:

Here, P = Rs.10,000, n = 2 years, and R = 5%

Amount invested for compound interest (yearly) = Rs. 10000 x [1 + 5/100] = Rs.10000 x
21/20 = Rs.10,500
Amount invested for compound interest (Half-yearly) = Rs. 10000 x [1 +(5/2)/100]2 = 10000
x (41/40)2 = Rs.10,506.25

Difference = Rs.(10506.25-10500) = Rs.6.25

7) In a certain year, the number of girls who graduated from City High School was twice the
number of boys. If 3/4 of the girls and 5/6 of the boys went to college immediately after
graduation, what fraction of the graduates that year went to college immediately after
graduation?
Answer : 7/9
Assume that number of boys graduated from City High School = B
Therefore, number of girls graduated from City High School = 2*B
It is given that 3/4 of the girls and 5/6 of the boys went to college immediately
after graduation.
Hence, total students went to college
= (3/4)(2*B) + (5/6)(B)
= B * (3/2 + 5/6)
= (7/3)B
Fraction of the graduates that year went to college immediately after graduation
= [(7/3)B] / [3*B]
= 7/9
Therefore, the answer is 7/9

8) A mule and a donkey were carrying full sacks on their backs. The mule started complaining
that his load was too heavy. The donkey said to him "Why are you complaining? If you gave

13) Which one of the following conditions must p, q and r satisfy so that the following system
of linear simultaneous equations has at least one solution, such that p + q + r not=0?
x+ 2y 3z = p
2x + 6y 11z = q
x 2y + 7z = r
a) 5p 2q r = 0
b) 5p + 2q + r = 0
c) 5p + 2q r = 0
d) 5p 2q + r = 0

Answer : d) 5p 2q + r = 0
Solution:
It is given that , if we consider the first option, and multiply the first equation by 5, second by
2 and third by 1, we see that the coefficients of x, y and z all add up-to zero.
Thus, 5p 2q r = 0. No other option satisfies this.

14) In a 4000 meter race around a circular stadium having a circumference of 1000 meters, the
fastest runner and the slowest runner reach the same point at the end of the 5th minute, for
the first time after the start of the race. All the runners have the same staring point and each
runner maintains a uniform speed throughout the race. If the fastest runner runs at twice the
speed of the slowest runner, what is the time taken by the fastest runner to finish the race?
a) 20 min
b) 15 min
c) 10 min
d) 5 min
Answer : c) 10 min
Solution:
The ratio of the speeds of the fastest and the slowest runners is 2 : 1. Hence they should meet
at only one point on the circumference i.e. the starting point (As the difference in the
ratio in reduced form is 1). For the two of them to meet for the first time, the faster should have
completed one complete round over the slower one. Since the two of them meet for the first
time after 5 min, the faster one should have completed 2 rounds (i.e. 2000 m) and the slower
one should have completed 1 round. (i.e. 1000 m) in this time. Thus, the faster one would
complete the race (i.e. 4000 m) in 10 min.

Answer: 3) RJJWZY
Solution:
