CARABAO INDUSTRY PERFORMANCE REPORT

EXPLANATORY NOTES
This annual Carabao Industry Performance Report presents the
industry situation in terms of inventory by farm type and age classification.
Animal inventory in top producing regions is also presented. The upon
information on volume of production, supply and disposition and average
monthly farmgate prices.
The Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS) conducts the Backyard
and Commercial Livestock and Poultry Surveys and the Survey of
Abattoirs nationwide to generate information on inventory of stocks, births,
slaughter and deaths. The Backyard Livestock and Poultry Survey (BLPS)
covers one (1) of the four (4) replicate samples of the Palay and Corn
Production Survey (PCPS) consisting of 9676 sample households in 678
sample barangays nationwide. In the January 2007 survey round, the
Commercial Livestock and Poultry Survey (CLPS) has covered around 124
independent farms with greater than 20 head of carabao regardless of age.
Both surveys for carabao are simultaneously conducted every semester in
all provinces. The Survey of Abattoirs on the other hand, covers around
1,100 abattoirs nationwide and is undertaken in coordination with the
National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS).
The BAS also conducts an independent semi-annual survey of
dairy carabao to generate data on inventory and milk production from
backyard or dual purpose dairy carabao and from private institutions. On
the other hand, the Philippine Carabao Center (PCC) generates
information on milk production and inventory of dairy animals from their
assisted dairy cooperatives and centers in selected regions, which they
provide to BAS for consolidation on a quarterly basis.

HIGHLIGHTS
The total carabao population as of
January 1, 2008 was estimated at 3.34
million head, 1.31 percent lower than
last years inventory. The decline was due
to the lower inventory in backyard farms
which accounted for more than 99
percent of the total carabao population.
Likewise, the inventory in commercial
farms dropped by 3.34 percent. The top
producing regions were Region 8 for
backyard farms and Region 5 for
commercial farms. .
In 2007, the volume and value of
carabeef imports increased by 2.82
percent and 10.88 percent, respectively,
compared with the previous years levels.
The average farmgate prices of live
carabao in 2007 was P52.80 per kilogram
liveweight, 1.52 percent higher against
last years price of P52.01. The highest
price of P55.05 per kilogram liveweight
was recorded during the month of
December. The price was 5.70 percent
higher compared with the price in 2006.

INVENTORY
The total carabao inventory as of January
1, 2008 reached 3.34 million head, 1.31
percent lower than last years head count.
This was mainly due to the decline of
population from backyard farms which
contributed almost 99 percent of the total
inventory.
The number of caracow, caraheifers,
yearlings and others decreased by 0.63
percent, 5.72 percent, 1.94 and 6.58
percent, respectively. On the other hand,
carabull population increased by 1.3
percent, compared with last years figure.

Inventory of Dairy Carabao
The five (5) top producing
regions were Regions VIII, II, VI,
XII, and V. These regions
accounted for about 45.5
percent of the total carabao
inventory.
The total dairy carabao
inventory as of January 1, 2008
was estimated at 13,416 head,
1.98 percent higher than last
years level. The number of
dairy .carabao was merely 0.4
percent of the total carabao
population.
By classification, dams or
female breeders accounted for
around 51.42 percent; calves,
22.13 percent, and yearlings,
12.92 percent. The rest were
bulls and heifers.

In 2007, total carabao production was estimated at 136.96 thousand metric
tons liveweight. It recorded an increase of 5.02 percent against last years
output of 130.41 thousand metric tons.
Compared with the previous years output, the quarterly production in 2007
recorded increases ranging from 2.14 percent on the 1

quarter.

MILK PRODUCTION
The countrys inventory of carabao dairy dam was about 6.9 million head. Of this
number, 5.4 million or 78 percent were on the milkline.
Dams on the milkline increased by 3.4 percent in 2007 compared with those in
2006.

The total supply of carabao in 2007 was placed at 3.82 million head,
merely 0.76 percent higher than last years level. This was attributed to
the 0.68 percent growth of birth rate in 2007.
In the disposition of animals, the total number of carabaos slaughtered for
meat in 2007 reached 459,088 head. It posted a significant increase of
18.03 percent in comparison with last years disposal Also, the number of
carabaos that have died of diseases rose by 13.26 percent .

SUPPLY AND UTILIZATION
In 2007, the total carabeef supply increase by 11.70 percent from last years
volume of 144,751 metric tons. This was due to the increments in carabeef production
and importation which grew by 18.03 percent and 2.85 percent, respectively. Likewise,
the derived per capita consumption of carabeef was 1.66 kg./yr., or 9.21 percent higher
than last years consumption.

The 2007 volume of imports reached 62.11 thousand metric tons, or 2.82
percent higher than the previous years level of 60.40 thousand metric tons.
Total value of imports rose from last years US$ 68.67 FOB million to US$
76.14 million FOB in 2007, or 10.88 percent higher than the previous years
value.
Higher volume of imported carabeef was observed during the 2
nd
and 3
rd
quarters of 2007, when imports grew by 7.32 percent and 28.38 percent,
respectively, in comparison with the levels of the same period a year ago.
Correspondingly, the value of imports went up by 11.15 percent in the 2
nd
quarter and 40.29 percent during the 3
rd
quarter of 2007.
