Metabolomic Eye is a metabolic
snapshot of the diversity of cells
in a mouse eye retina, derived
from computational molecular
phenotyping. Neuroscientist
Bryan Jones, PhD, created serial
120-nanometer-thick slices of
the mouse eye and then stained
those layers with specialized antibodies that bind to three
molecules: taurine, glutamine and glutamate, which he assigned
to red, green and blue color channels on a computer. The resulting
image depicts more than 70 different cell types, each a unique
shade. This photograph won rst place in the 2011 International
Science and Engineering Visualization Challenge.

Ethics
Code of Ethics
All members of the Academy agree to abide by
the Code of Ethics as a condition of continued
membership. Learn the principles and rules
governing the ethical practice of ophthalmology to
ensure that the best interests of patients are served.
The Code of Ethics is now available in Spanish:

Bettman Ethics Lecture Program
The Academys Ethics Committee offers a unique
ethics lecture program, developed as a practical
educational tool for both residents and practicing
ophthalmologists. In addition to providing a
practical view of everyday ethics, the lectures
generally qualify for ethics-specic CME credit for
certication and recertication and state licensure,
and they satisfy ACGME ethics requirements for
resident education.

Three ethics courses are available in an engaging
interactive format that require user responses to
ethical dilemmas before moving forward.

Commercial Relationships,
Compensation and Advertising
For economic, social and political reasons, modes
of ophthalmic practice have changed drastically
in the last few years. Commercial relationships
of all varieties now abound. Many factors affect
levels of compensation. Advertising is seen as
a primary practice-building tool. What are the
threshold principles for the ethically responsible
ophthalmologist?
Informed Consent, Doctor-Patient
Relationship and Delegated
Services
Obtaining informed consent, engendering
physician-patient trust and delegating
duties appropriately are the traditional ethical
underpinnings of good health care. These ethical
concerns are central to the best interests of
the patient, and quality of service suffers if
these issues are not addressed.
Research, New Technology and
Collegiality
It is important to recognize the ethical issues
unique to research and the denition of innovative
therapies and standards of practice. At the same
time, promoting collegial interactions between
physicians helps the profession dene and maintain
performance standards. How does the ethical
ophthalmologist do all this and focus on the best
interests of patients?
