the mosthyped video games of the lasttwo years, and the dastardly hilarity of South Park: The
StickofTruth.Thoughnoteverythingreleasedthisyearquiteliveduptoourloftyexpectations,we
asgamerscertainlyhaventwantedforholys***!moments,beitaweinspiringusesofnextgen
tech,gamesthathelpedreinventthegenre,controllerthrowinglyinfuriatingmissions,awesome
bossfights,devastatingdeathscenes,andprettymucheverythinginbetween.Iftheremainderof
the year can continue withthis level of momentum, then despite the absurd number of games
recentlybeingpushedinto2015,weregoingtohaveablastwiththelikesofDestiny,SuperSmash
Bros.,Evolve,FarCry4andsoonandsoforth.BearinmindthatSPOILERSWILLFOLLOWforsome

10.PrepareForTitanfall -Titanfall
One of the mostanticipated games of the year was Respawn Entertainments Titanfall, a game
created by former Call of Duty developersJason West and Vince Zampella, who following their
unceremonious dismissal from Infinity Word, sought to bring the CoD franchise to its knees.
Though Titanfall as a franchise still has a long way to go before itll make a significant dent in
Activisions commercial juggernaut, it was a true breath of fresh air for the FPS
genre,throwingfreerunning and giant mechs called Titans into the mix and crafting one of the
most fiendishly addictive multiplayer titles in years. The first time our jaw dropped was after
spending a few minutes playing as a mere pilot, and finally being able to call in our first Titan.
Hearingourcommsdeclare,PrepareforTitanfallaswewatchedthe20footmetalbeastdrop
fromtheskywaslikenothingwedeverseeninagamelikethis,andtheimpactastheTitanlands
ontheflooraptlyconveysthetremendousweightofthemechs.Withalittleluckandadashof
skill,maybeyouevenmanagedtolandyourfirstTitanontopofsomeoneelsesTitan.Theresbeen
nothrillquitelikeitthisyear.
9.RainbowRoadMarioKart8
Iftheresone thingwealwayslookforwardtoinaMarioKartgame,itstacklingtheinfamously
challenging Rainbow Road track, one which has plagued gamers for decades throughout the
variousiterationsoftheseries.Withitsdevilishlysharpturnsandperilouslynarrowtrack,Rainbow
Roadissimultaneouslyafanfavouriteandalsothemostinfuriatingtrackinthehistoryoftheentire
franchise, and its glossy Wii U equivalent is certainly no exception. Its safe to say that Rainbow
Roadhasneverlookedbetter:theWiiUmaydragitsheelsbehindthePS4andXboxOnetechnically,
thoughyouwouldntknowthatfromtheeyewateringlybeautifultextures,whichcombinedwith
theadditionofantigravitysectionsmakethisthemostenjoyableinterpretationofthefamedtrack
yet.AsbrilliantlyfunasalmosteverytrackinMarioKart8is,itsRainbowRoadthatblewmostof
usaway,andensuredthatNintendoeffortlesslycreatedanotherclassicinstallmentintheseries.
8.HackingQuinnsPacemakerWatchDogs
WatchDogsmayhavefallensomewhatshortofourratherinsaneexpectations,butdespitebeing
adisappointment,itwasasolidlyentertaininggameforthemostpart.Easilyourfavouritemoment
came near the end of the game, when Aiden finally got to confrontDermot Lucky Quinn, the
crustyoldguyresponsibleforthedeathofhisniece.Afterblastinghiswaythroughafleetoffixers,
AidenfinallygetstoQuinn,thoughhehashimselflockedinasaferoomwithbulletproofglass.So,
what do we have to do? Thats right, hack the guys pacemaker. This causes Quinn to fall to his
knees,andasheremainsindignantthathelldieahero,theplayerthenregainscontrol,ableto
hackhispacemakeronceagain,thistimeshuttingitoffcompletelyandkillinghim.Thoughitmay
havelackedthethrillofanexcitingfinalbossfight,propstoUbisoftfordefyingconventionyetstill
givingusasatisfyingwaytotakeouttheoldcoot(afterall,agunfightagainsttheguywouldhave
justbeensilly),allowingforourselvestodecidewhentoblowhispacemaker.Forallofthethings
WatchDogsdidntquitemeasureupon,thisisoneshrewdcreativedecisionthattotallyworked.
7.InfernoIVTrialsFusion
The Trials franchise prides itself on completely putting its players through the wringer,
psychologicallyabusingthemwithitsinsanelydifficulttrackslaterinthegame,trackswhichmost
of us will simply never be able to complete. The latest discsnappingly challenging zinger from
RedLynxisInfernoIV,atrackfromthebonusExtremesectionofthegamethat,toputitbluntly,
isoneofthemostdiabolicalanddementedconceptionsinthehistoryofgaming.Watchingeven
selfappointedTrialsexpertsfailrepeatedlyisatestamenttohowgettingthroughthetrackrelies
onacombinationofpinsharpphysicscontrolanddumbluck.Withitsabsurdnumberofintricate
jumps and explosives littered throughout the track, Inferno IV trulyseparates the men fromthe
boys,andthatmomentwhen,afterspendinghourstrying,youfinallybeatthetrack,itsafeeling
morepurelyrewardingthananythingelseweveplayedthisyear.
6.PazDiesMetalGearSolidV:Ground
Zeroes
HideoKojimasbitesizedtasterfornextyearsMetalGearSolidV:ThePhantomPainmayhavefelt
likeaglorifieddemogivenits80minuteplaytime,butitcertainlyfilleduswithconfidencethat
thefinalproductwillstopnothingshortofbeingamasterpieceandoneofthefirstgamestotruly
pushnextgentechtothenextlevel.OneofBigBossmissionobjectivesthroughoutthegameis
to rescue Peace Walkers Paz from Camp Omega, though after doing so, Big Boss comes to a
horrifyingrealisationinthegamesconcludingcutscene.Firstly,itisdiscoveredthatPazhashada
bomb surgically implanted into her stomach by Skull Face, who anticipated that Big Boss would
cometorescueher.Aftersomeunpleasantemergencysurgery,thebombisremoved,thoughPaz
declaresthatanotherbombhadbeenimplantedinsideher,theimplicationbeingthatitwasplaced
ineitherherladybitsorinsideherwomb.Eitherway,Pazdecidestosacrificeherselfbeforethe
bomb detonates, diving out of the chopper, though the explosion still rocks the craft, sending it
into another chopper and kickstarting the events of The Phantom Pain. There has been
considerable debate online about whether Kojima went too far with a bomb planted inside a
womans private parts, though the sheer shock of the moment was enough to ingrain it in our
mindsforevermore.TrustKojimatodowhathealwaysdonesobrilliantly:pushthemediumasfar
ashepossiblycan.
5.UmbraBossFight -ChildOfLight
Ubisofts superbly artistic RPG is without question one of the best games of the year so far, a
spellbinding journey that didnt serve up too much difficulty, but was an utter delight for every
minute of itsroughly 12hour story. The final fight has Aurora and co. fightingUmbra, Queen of
theNight,whotransformsintoagiantdragonandbringswithhertwofierceminioncreatures.This
iseasilythemostintensefightinthegame,inlargepartbecauseitbeginsalmostimmediatelyafter
defeatingthepreviousboss,Nox,givingplayerspracticallynochancetoregaintheirmarblesand
prepareforthefinalboss.Still,abarrageoflightattacksisverymuchtheorderofthedayhere,
andthoughUmbrasownattacksaredevastating,sensibleuseofhealingandthegamesexcellent
partysystemshouldkeepthisonefrombeingtoodifficult.Afteralengthyfight,Umbrawillfinally
fall,andAurorasquesttorestorelighttoLemuriaiscomplete.Itmaynothavefilleduswithquite
thesamesenseofdesperatesatisfactionasTrialsInfernoIV,butwithitsgorgeousvisualstyleand
epicscore,perhapsnogamehasbeenasartisticallyaccomplishedasChildofLightthisyear.
4.ReggieDiesInfamous:SecondSon
Infamous:SecondSondidntquiteliveuptoourhighexpectations,buttheresnodenyingthefact
thatitwasabreezyblastofagame.Oneofitsmostsuccessfulaspectswasinmakingusbuyinto
therelationshipbetweenConduitprotagonistDelsinRoweandhisbrotherReggie,theSheriffof
Salmon Bay who finds himself torn between loyalty to his brother and his absolute disgust for
Conduits.Neartheendofthegame,ReggierescuesDelsininordertohelphimdefeatAugustine,
though she retaliates, causing Delsin and Reggie to end up dangling off the edge of a cliff. With
Augustine continually encasing Reggie in concrete while Delsin desperately tries to pull him up,
Reggietellshimtolethimgo.Eventually,Reggietellshisbrother,Dammit,Imsoproudofyou.
Alwayshavebeen.Iloveyoubroandletsgo,plungingtohisdeathasDelsinlooksoninhorror.
Itsapivotal,tideturningmomentinthegame,butwhatreallysellsittousisthejawdropping
graphics, namely the insanely realistic lipsync and facial capture, helping convey the agony and
desperationofthescenesuperbly.
3.YourFirstDeathDarkSoulsII
Dark Souls II is one of the most brutally difficult video games released since, well, the last Dark
Souls,butwhatkeepsbringinggamersbackisthefactthatthegameisforthemostpartincredibly
fair about how it tears you asunder: clever planning and some sharp combat skills will see you
improveyourskillsand(eventually)comeoutontop.DespiteworriesthatDarkSoulsIImighthave
endedupcasualisedtoappealtoawiderplayerbase,ourfearswerequelledwithinmeremoments
of loading the game up, when the warm, fuzzy You Died screen appeared after we made a
colossalscrewup.Howdidyoufirstdieinthegame?Maybeyoufelloffaledge,decidedtogofor
aswim,attackedalocalzombie,orgoteatenbysomeofthegameslovelywildlife,butthatfirst
death made it clear to all of us that Dark Souls II was just as relentlessly unforgiving as its
predecessor,andwasgoingtohaveusforalongtimebeforeweendedupreachingthatcredits
screen.Rarelyhasdyinginagameeverbeensoridiculouslyentertaining.
2.LuigisDeathStareMarioKart8
Theresnothinglikeanawesomegamingmeme,andthereleaseofMarioKart8broughtwithit
the socalledLuigi Death Stare, which originated withthis hilarious videoof Luigi hitting Waluigi
withagreenshellandgivinghimthescariest,creepieststareimaginable,settoChamillionaires
Ridin.Theslowmotiononlyenhancesthehilarity,andtheclipcausedaworldwideInternetLuigi
sensation which was even picked up by several major news outlets, while enterprising players
begancreatingtheirownvideossettoavarietyofdifferentsongs.RainbowRoadmaybethebest
track in Mario Kart 8, but checking out our replays and scouring for the creepiest Luigi face has
prettymuchtakenupjustasmuchofourtimeplayingthegame,andwhynot?WhetherNintendo
placedthecreepymuginthegameintentionallyornot,theyhavetransformedMarioKart8into
asocialmediadarling,anditcanonlyhelpitsalreadysubstantialprofile.

SouthPark:TheStickofTruthisoneofthefunniestgamesevermadeandquitepossiblythebest
evervideogameadaptationofaTVshow,andassuchitsdifficulttopickjustonemomentthat
risesabovetherest,butwevedecidedtogowiththegiantKhloeKardashianabortedNazizombie
fetusboss.WhentheNaziZombieVirusendsupslatheredalloveranabortionclinic,ittransforms
the fetuses into Nazi zombies, before Dr.Poonlover declares thatKhloe Kardashian was in here
thismorning.ShehadthebiggestabortionIveeverseenandatthatmoment,Kardashiansgiant
reanimated Nazi fetus bursts through the wall, tearing soldiers in half and setting upone of the
mostf***edupbossfightsinvideogamehistory.Combatmaynothavebeenthegreatestaspect
ofTheStickofTruth,buttakingdownthisenemybroughtusanindecentamountofjoy,simply
becausewecouldntbelievethatMattStoneandTreyParkerwereabletotaketheirdeliriousbrand
of sick humour this far inavideo game. Perhaps the most surprising thing isthat the game was
releasedwithsuchaminimaldegreeofcontroversy
