Spiritual Quotient

Slide 2:
Spiritual intelligence, Spiritual quotient, Soul's intelligence, Self-actualization The words in Vogue

Slide 3:
According to Dana Zohar : Spiritual intelligence is: about the human need and talent for finding meaning in experience

Slide 4:
Higher Spiritual Truths are to be Experienced We may talk and reason all our lives, but cannot understand a word of Truth unless
we Experience it ourselves.

Slide 5:
Higher Spiritual Truths are to be Experienced The greatest power is lodged in fine, not in the coarse. The finer that is really the
seat of power

Slide 6:
That is precisely the reason why Spiritual Quotient is gathering more and more importance over IQ and EQ IMPORTANCE OF
SPIRUTAL QUOTIENT

Slide 7:
What is Spiritual Intelligence It is about having a direction in life and being able to heal ourselves of all the resentment It is
thinking of ourselves as an expression of a higher reality.

Slide 8:
In mid-1990s, Daniel Goleman revealed findings in neuroscience and psychology that stressed the importance of Emotional
Quotient (EQ). The Conscious efforts in study of Intelligence

Slide 9:
E_intelligence * Makes us aware of our feelings and that of others. * Gives empathy, motivation, compassion and an ability to
respond skillfully to pleasure and pain. The Conscious efforts in study of Intelligence

Slide 10:
E_intelligence Goleman argued that EQ was a basic requirement for the use of IQ. If the areas of our brain that feel are damaged,
our ability to think effectively is diminished. The Conscious efforts in study of Intelligence

Slide 11:
E_intelligence Emotional brain is supposed to be seated in Amygdala (limbic system), situated on top of brain stem. This was
primitive brain

Slide 12:
Dana Zohar and Ian Marshall introduced a new dimension to human intelligence. Spiritual Quotient (or SQ) is the ultimate
intelligence, they claim. This is the intelligence used to solve problems of meaning and value. "Is my job giving me the
fulfillment I seek?" "Am I relating to the people in my life in a way that contributes to their happiness and mine?" NEW
DIMENSION IN STUDY OF INTELLIGENCE

Slide 13:
Humans are essentially spiritual beings, evolved to ask fundamental questions. "Who am I?" "Where am I going?" "What do
others mean to me?" THE BASIS OF SPIRUTALITY

Slide 14:
Spiritual intelligence motivates people to balance their work schedules to spend time with the family. An executive with a high
SQ might look beyond profit margins and devote time for voluntary work with orphans. Spiritual intelligence also addresses the
need to place one's life in a shared context of value. THE BASIS OF SPIRUTALITY

Slide 15:
* SQ can not be quantified or measured, whereas IQ and EQ may assessed. The reason being that SQ deals with finer aspects
which are matter of personal experience DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INDICES OF INTELLIGENCE IQ SQ EQ

Slide 16:
The transformative power of SQ distinguishes it from IQ and EQ. * IQ primarily solves logical problems. * EQ allows us to
judge the situation we are in and behave appropriately. * SQ allows us to ask if we want to be in that situation in the first place.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INDICES OF INTELLIGENCE IQ SQ EQ

Slide 17:
Some simple questions we can ask ourselves. There answer may be Yes or No or Sometimes Remember that for nobody but your
own inner self will be hearing the answers. HOW TO EVALUATE SPIRITUAL INTELLIGENCE

Slide 18:
* Is it incorrect to consider all religio-spiritual activity to be the pastime of the elderly, or those who have time hanging heavily
on their hands? * Are you drawn towards places of worship (temples, churches, gurudwaras, mosques, etc.) quite often? * Do
you have a prayer room, or a place of prayerful focus, say an altar, in your home, where you devote some time to Communion
with the Higher Forces? * Do you feel the need to seek guidance and Blessings from God whenever you are at the threshold of an
important event in your life? EVALUATION OF SQ

Slide 19:
* Do you feel the inner need to be with Nature to calm yourself and commune with Natural phenomena? * Do you feel the urge
to pick up books, or articles, on religious, spiritual or metaphysical subjects, whenever you see them? * Do you feel the urge to
ask God's help, whenever any situation in your life seems to be out of your control? * Would you like to go on a holiday to a
place of pilgrimage to provide joy to your mind body and spirit, in a composite manner? EVALUATION OF SQ

Slide 20:
* If you suddenly heard a piece of devotional music, would it touch an unseen chord in your soul? * If somebody you know, or
do not know, needs help, whether physically, emotionally or financially, does an instinctive urge spring from within your heart to
provide whatever succour you are capable of giving? Give yourself 5 points for every 'Yes', 0 points for every 'No', and 3 points
for every answer that you give as 'Sometimes". EVALUATION OF SQ

Slide 21:
Researchers have identified a 'God-spot' in the human brain. This area is located among neural connections in the temporal lobes
of the brain. During scans with positron emission topography, these neural areas light up whenever research subjects are exposed
to discussion of spiritual topics.

Slide 22:
'God-spot' is culture specific Westerners responding to ideas of 'God' and Buddhists and Hindus responding to certain symbols.

Slide 23:
While the God-spot does not prove the existence of 'God', it does indicate that the brain is programmed to ask ultimate questions.
'God-spot'

Slide 24:
We use spiritual intelligence to transform ourselves and others, heal relationship, cope with grief, and move beyond conditioned
habits of the past. Spiritual Intelligence

Slide 25:
To develop high SQ, each person needs to approach the task according to his/her personality How to develop High SQ

Slide 26:
CONVENTIONAL TYPE: THE PATH OF DUTY SOCIAL TYPE: THE PATH OF NURTURING INVESTIGATIVE TYPE:
THE PATH OF KNOWLEDGE ARTISTIC TYPE: THE PATH OF PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION REALISTIC PERSON:
THE PATH OF BROTHERHOOD ENTERPRISING TYPE: THE PATH OF SERVANT-LEADERSHIP Types of personality

Slide 27:
EIGHT SIGNS OF HIGH SQ 1. Flexibility 2. Self-awareness 3. An ability to face and use suffering 4. The ability to be inspired
by a vision 5. An ability to see connections between diverse things (thinking holistically) 6. A desire and capacity to cause as
little harm as possible 7. A tendency to probe and ask fundamental questions 8. An ability to work against convention

Slide 28:
A high SQ is the best predictor of happiness serenity good self-esteem and harmonious & loving relationships Importance of SQ

Slide 29:
People who know how to translate life's problems and struggles into spiritual issues can often find more gratifying and rewarding
solutions to these problems through their spiritual IQs. Importance of SQ

Slide 30:
Can a person learn how to become more spiritual? Can they develop and "raise" their Spiritual IQ? You BET they can

Slide 31:
Three fold path of : Sadhana Aradhana and Upasana Need to be adopted

Slide 32:
Immediate gains are : Greater serenity Better self-esteem and Increased satisfaction

n todays world, we are ever looking to achieve happiness through material possessions. Would achieving these
provide us with a successful and a happy life ?
One way of finding out answers to this question could be to explore the Spiritual Quotient (SQ), relating to our ability
to understand and comprehend the spiritual aspects of life
We have heard about Intelligence Quotient (IQ) and Emotional Quotient
(EQ) so what is the Spiritual Quotient (SQ) we are referring to ?
To be born as a human being alone affords and provides a platform for attaining higher levels in realization. In a
recent research work on SQ, Danah Zoher and Ian Marshal say While computers have IQ and animals can have EQ,
it is essentially an SQ that sets human beings apart. Therefore, for the Wheel of Life to roll smoothly, all the spokes
of the wheel IQ, EQ and SQ have to be equally developed. The journey from IQ to SQ represents moving from
gross to subtle, finite to infinite and from tangible to intangible. SQ has several facets: Improving on reducing ones
ego, spirit of surrender and service to others, showing more compassion and expressing gratitude to others.
Bhagavad Gita has elaborated on all of the above issues and provided several workable solutions to enable a person
to grow his or her spiritual quotient. One of the main stumbling blocks standing in the way of a persons progress and
advancement is his or her ego. Ego issues have to be handled with maturity and tact and a person has to learn the
act of sublimation. Ego issues, if left uncontrolled can create problems in our personal, social and professional lives.
All our scriptures have attributed the cause of most of the problems to this one single factor! Therefore Gita says to
focus on the big I and not on the small I
Great spiritual masters have also echoed the fact that we should try and focus on the inner core rather than on
external appearances. They have also demonstrated the act of surrender to their gurus.
When surrender of ones ego takes place, there is just tranquility and peace in our interaction with the world. One
such exemplary devotee who exhibited complete surrender to the ultimate was Hanumanji.
As a person surrenders his ego.. the maanava becomes madhava.. Quality of goodness arises in him leading him to
Godliness and achieving spiritual realization.
We should try and show compassion and help others in any means possible by wealth, time or any other means.
After all we are the beads strung together in a same garland!
Just as a musk deer runs hither and thither not knowing where the good smell is coming from, but from its very own
navel, so also we have forgotten the fact that we are spiritual beings in a human form. Spiritual Quotient is all about
discovering of ones own inner self.
Mind is the function of autonomic nervous system (ANS). ANS is largely under hypothalamic control. Hypothalamus is
situated very close to optic chiasma known as sixth chakra or ajna chakra in Indian System of Yoga. Practice of
concentration to meditate at sixth chakra is considered superior to all other types of meditation. ANS has two sub-
system (1) Parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS) and (2) Sympathetic nervous system (SNS). PSNS is activated
during meditative calm and SNS is activated during stress. I, therefore, discovered a mathematical formula for
spiritual quotient (S.Q.) based on the above facts. In this relationship Spiritual Quotient can be expressed
mathematically as the ratio of parasympathetic dominance to sympathetic dominance. We can assign numerical
values to various physiological parameters activated or suppressed during autonomic mobilisation like heart rate, rate
of respiration, supply of blood to interior and exterior organs etc. and can put the values in the above formula for S.Q.
and can preditct the state of mind of an individual and can also infer about ones level of consciousness.
Yoga (Application) which was based on the control of the body physically and implied that a perfect control over the
body and the senses led to knowledge of the ultimate reality. A detailed anatomical knowledge of the human body
was necessary to the advancement of yoga and therefore those practising yoga had to keep in touch with medical
knowledge. (Romila Thapar, A History of India, volume one).
I suggest : Mind and brain are two distinct things. Brain is anatomical entity whereas mind is functional entity. Mind
can be defined as the function of autonomic nervous system (ANS). It is claimed that mind can be brought under
conscious control through the practice of meditation. But how? ANS is largely under hypothalamic control which is
situated very close to optic chiasma (sixth chakra or ajna chakra). Protracted practice of concentration to meditate at
this region brings functions of ANS say mind under ones conscious control.
ANS is further divided into parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS) and sympathetic nervous system (SNS). On the
basis of these facts I have discovered a mathematical relationship for spiritual quotient (S.Q.). Spiritual Quotient can
be expressed mathematically as the ratio of Parasympathetic dominance to Sympathetic dominance. PSNS
dominates during meditative calm and SNS dominates during stress. In this formula we assign numerical values to
the physiological parameters activated or suppressed during autonomic mobilization and put in the formula to
describe the state of mind of an individual and also infer his/her level of consciousness.
Meditation is the art of looking within and science of doing nothing. We dont use anything in meditation. We just try to
concentrate to meditate at some point in human anatomy known as chakra in Indian System of Yoga. The current of
mind is flowing outward through the senses and unconsciously. The mind comes at rest gradually through regular
practice of meditation. Then comes self realization and enlightenment. Protracted practice of meditation under
qualified guidance will help to manage all sort of psychological problems.
Emotional Quotient can also be expressed mathematically as the product of I.Q. and Wisdom Factor. E.Q. stands for
Emotional Quotient. An intelligent person may not be wise. But a wise man will always be intelligent. An intelligent
person having certain level of positive emotions can be said as wise. An intelligent person lacking wisdom will turn
autocrat. A wise man will always be a democrat who respects others existence.
Some may raise doubt that how could be the Wisdom quantified? The answer is simple -if Mental Age of I.Q. can be
quantified then Wisdom can also be quantified, of course, comparatively with more efforts. Wilhelm Stern had given
the formula of I.Q.. It is, Mental Age/ Chronological Age x 100. Spiritual Quotient (S.Q.) leverages both E.Q. and I.Q.

Maslow has given Hierarchy of Needs. At the top of it is need for self-actualization or self-realization.
In our society we should learn To Live and Let Live and help to satisfy others need. When the lower order needs,
physiological and sociological both, are satisfied then only a person think to satisfy need for self-realization in true
sense. Else he/she may spend all his/her life to satisfy at the most the need for self-expression instead of self-
realization.
It is, therefore, the duty of every responsible person, at the least, of our society to give serious thought over it.
For the satisfaction of need for self-realization i.e. establishment of harmony of individual consciousness with that of
universal consciousness we need following three things:
1. Master or Guru (A Self-Realized Soul)
2. Secret of Levels of Universal Consciousness
3. Method for traversing the path.

SQ is about asking the fundamental questions in Life
>Who Am I
>Focusing on the Big I and not the Small i.
>Monitoring ones Ego
>Moving towards the right direction in Life(refer the Gita
for the Right Direction in life)
>Revamping ones Basics with the higher knowledge
>Uplifting ourselves from the animal Platform to a Human
platform
>Motivating ourselves for the ultimate Goal in this human Life
i.e.,Understanding the Supreme Personality of Godhead
