OBJECTIVE
The Alan Shepard Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Award recognizes the outstanding achievements of one individual,
team, or organization in the Ryerson University community, who advanced equity, diversity and inclusion at Ryerson through
outstanding dedication and excellence in providing services for diverse populations, fostering an inclusive environment inside
and/or outside the classroom, and/or addressing equity.

The award for the individual recipient consists of a certificate and a monetary award of $1,000. The team achievement award,
presented to a group of 2 to 10 individuals, consists of individual certificates and a total monetary award of $2,000 to be shared
equally amongst the team members, should a team be selected.

ELIGIBILITY AND OBLIGATIONS
Who can be nominated?
Ryerson students and student organizations can be nominated.
NOTE: Individuals who have equity, diversity, and inclusion responsibilities and duties are not excluded from
consideration; however, it is understood that nominees contributions and work that is above and beyond their basic
responsibilities are being considered.
No individual can be nominated for more than one award in any given year, however the Awards Selection Committee
may choose to reassign a nomination to a different award category, based on the best fit with the evidence, with the
nominees agreement.
The nomination is valid only for the year in which it is submitted.
Nominations must be based on achievements within the past year.
By agreeing to be nominated, the nominee commits to cooperation with the nomination facilitator in providing
supporting evidence. The nominee will also commit, if selected as the recipient, to attending Ryerson Awards Night.

Who can submit a nomination?
Faculty, staff or students can submit nominations.

The award will celebrate people who advanced equity, diversity and inclusion at Ryerson in one or more of the following areas:

1. Regularly demonstrates behaviors reflecting equity, diversity and inclusion, and champions the ideals of equity,
diversity and inclusion.
2. Takes action to identify and address systemic barriers to full participation in University life and supports the University
community to be an inclusive and welcoming learning, working and living environment.
3. Develops unique/innovative programs that significantly enhance Ryersons ability to facilitate full participation, and
provide opportunities for the entire Ryerson community to reap the benefits of studying and working in an equitable,
diverse and inclusive environment.
4. Committed to and takes action to serve underrepresented populations (among students/ faculty/ staff) to provide access
and opportunities to those who might not otherwise be part of our community, and once here may not be fully
welcomed and included.

Supporting Evidence Requirements
Evidence in support of the criteria must include some of the following:
A clear description of the specific initiatives, demonstrated qualities, or actions by the nominee as they relate to the
criteria.
Direct and indirect evidence of the impact on student experience or the work of others at Ryerson.
Samples of reflections from the nominee and from other participants on the goals, objectives and results of a specific
initiative related to the nomination.
Description and samples of work to demonstrate the relevant area of excellence.
Any additional evidence addressing a focus on the relevant criteria.

The range and diversity of support for the nominee (e.g. from students, alumni, colleagues, administrators, etc.) will be
reviewed as well as the range and complexity of contributions.

NOMINATION PROCESS
Any member of the Ryerson Community (faculty, staff or students) can nominate someone for the Alan Shepard Equity,
Diversity and Inclusion Award. To do so, they must:
1. Obtain the nominees permission.
2. Prepare, in collaboration with the nominee, a nomination package of their accomplishments and contributions that meet
the award criteria and eligibility.
3. Submit the nomination package to Elsie Nisonen enisonen@ryerson.ca by the specified deadline for consideration by
the selection committee.
4. If the nominator is a student, they are encouraged to contact the Dean or Senior Directors Office for assistance in the
compilation of the nomination package, in order to ensure that the submission reflects a full range of the nominees
contributions of which a student nominator may not be fully aware.

There is no limit on the number of nominations for the Alan Shepard Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Award from any given
individual. All submitted nomination files will be reviewed by the selection committee. The committees mandate is to ensure
that high quality candidates are identified and to ensure an appropriate match exists between the candidates achievements and
the criteria for the award.

NOMINATION PACKAGE
The completed nomination package must not exceed a total of 10 pages. The nomination file should clearly address the award
criteria.

The required components of the award nomination package are:

A Nomination Brief (1 to 2 pages) prepared and signed by the nominator. The Nomination Brief should clearly
address the nominees achievements according to the awards criteria. In essence, it should function as an executive
summary, including specific examples, and reference to specific details included in the package.

Team Nomination Instructions:

o Teams must have between 2 and 10 individuals.
o Submit the nomination under the team lead's name.
o In the Nomination Brief, include a list of all team member names and roles. Briefly describe how team
members contributed and worked together.
o Download the Team Member Nomination Consent Form and have each team member complete a separate
form. Submit each team member's completed form with the nomination package.

A Citation (no more than 150 words) suitable for public release, to be prepared by the nominator. Should the nominee
be selected as the recipient, the citation will be included in related University communication materials.
Letters of support (not exceeding one page in length each) that provide specific examples of why the nominee should
be considered for the Alan Shepard Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Award. There should be a minimum of 3 letters
from people who know the nominee and their work; the letters, as much as possible, should reflect a broad spectrum of
the Ryerson community faculty, students, and staff.

SELECTION PROCESS
The selection committees mandate is to help advance Ryersons values of equity, diversity and inclusion by ensuring that high
quality candidates, whose achievements meet or exceed the awards criteria, are selected for the recognition awards available to
students. The selection committee will be broadly representative of the Ryerson community, including faculty, staff, and
students. The Assistant Vice President/Vice Provost, Equity Diversity and Inclusion will serve as chair and identity members to
serve on the committee.

Selection committee members are responsible for reviewing all nomination packages received individually, and will together
determine the award recipient through consensus.

NOTE: An award will not be given if there is no suitable candidate nominated that clearly demonstrates the criteria in the
opinion of the selection committee.
