Aristotle once said this - Those that know, do. Those that understand, teach.

I want to
be such a teacher who does not just know but understands the information thoroughly
and then imparts this valuable knowledge to students clearly. I wish to pursue the
Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in England.
My passion for teaching goes a long way back. I had my first experience with teaching
at the age of eighteen, right after I completed my A level examinations in Singapore.
Though I was only a relief teacher to teach physics to secondary two and secondary
four students, this experience turned out to be a life-changing one. I clearly remember
my first day as a teacher, standing in front of forty people. I was very nervous, as it was
my first time standing and talking in front of that many people. But with time, I started
feeling more confident about myself and very soon, I enjoyed it so much that it did not
seem like work anymore. That is when I realized I definitely wanted to be a teacher.
Teaching turned out to be more challenging that I had anticipated. I had to completely
switch my mindset from being a student for the last twelve years to someone who is
now viewed as an expert in that field. When I was a student, I used to question teachers
and criticise them if they were not able to answer my questions. However, that same
approach has now inculcated a learning spirit in me that ensures that I am well prepared
to answer any questions about the topics I will be teaching. I completelyenjoy this
process of constant learning and this is why I love teaching.I alsolove interacting with
youths and see how they think. I want to become such a teacher who does not just
focus on imparting knowledge to students but also in developing them holistically.
Furthermore, the skills I possess from my school days will definitely help me with my
teaching career. In spite of a highly demanding academic schedule, I was very active
with the chess club. Being the Head of Training for the chess club, I learnt to work well
in teams and delegate tasks as a leader. I was also an active member of the junior
colleges Scholar Development Programme. In 2007, I participated in a focus group
discussion in the National Education Symposium and was also part of a dialogue
session with the Minister of State for Education. Doing so many extracurricular activities
besides my classes allowed me to be more efficient with time management. I was also
the elected class representative for two years in my university. This further gave me an
opportunity to hone my leadership skills.
Having studied in the Cambridge system, I am very familiar with the UK system of
primary as well as secondary education. Hence, pursuing this Postgraduate Certificate
in Education (PGCE) in England will be an ideal step towards my goal of becoming an
inspiring teacher. Being an international student, pursuing this highly reputable teaching
course in England would give me a broad exposure and equip me with the necessary
skills to become a proficient teacher.I strongly believe that I possess the qualities and
the skills to become a successful teacher, and that my strong motivation coupled with
my teaching experiencewill make me a highly suitable candidate for this teaching
course.
