Introduction
An alloy is a homogeneous ixture
of two or more metals or a metal
and non-metal.
They are generally harder than
their
components with reduced
malleabilitycom
and
.
ductility. Alloys are prepared to
enhance
certain characteristics of the
constituent
metals as per re!uirement.
In this pro"ectiCBSEweshall

to get the soln of 0inciCBSESulphide. It precipitates out in the
form of 0nCl8 in an ammoniacal soln. of Ammonium
Cu dissol#es in -8S to gi#e blac( ppt. of CuS.
It is 'ltered
chloride. The precipitate is dissol#ed in dilute
-Cl and then treated with .otassium
ferrocyanide to get a bluish-white ppt. of
0n8=+e6 ,7>?.
%ron$e
%ron$e contains Cu and Sn. Their nitrates are
obtained by dissol#ing the sample in conc.
,itric acid. The nitrates are precipitated as
sulphides by passing -8S through their
solution in dil. -Cl.
The CuS is insoluble in yellow a onium
sulphide while SnS is soluble. The ppt. is
separated by 'ltration.
The ppt. is dissol#ed in conc. -,41 and then
Ammonium hydroxide solution is com
passed through it.%lue
colouration con'rms the presense . of Cu.
The 'ltrate is treated with conc. -Cl followed
by 0inc dust
to obtain SnCl8 . Then -gCl8 solution is added.
+ormation of slate-coloured ppt. indicates the
presence of Sn.

%rass:
A small piece of brass was placed in a
china dish and dissol#ed in
minicomum !uantity of
<;Aconc.-,41.
The soln. was heated to btain a dry residue.
The residue was dissol#ed. in /ilute -Cl.
-8S gas wasiCBSEpassed
and a blac(.ppt. was obser#ed. The
soln. was 'ltered and the ppt. was
dissol#ed in ,-94- soln. A blue
coloration obser#ed indicates the
presence of Cu.
The 'ltrate was tested for presence
of 0n. Ammon um hydroxide and
chloride solutions were added and
then -8S gas was passed. A dull
grey ppt. was separated and
dissol#ed in dil.
-Cl followed by addition of
.otassium
ferrocyanide. A bluish white ppt.
con'rms the presense of 0n.
