Integrated Controller ICs Help Eliminate Design Constraints in LED

Lighting Applications

LED bulb types otherwise known as B series

or candela, F series or flame tip, MR16, PAR
and A series are requiring the LED driver
designer to work within a smaller volume
cavity or limited circuit board footprint while
still meeting efficiency, protection requirements,
global regulatory standards, and reliability
demands.
The LED driver designer needs a collection of
solution and technology choices to help meet
these constraints - imagine the solution choices
as knobs for a designer to turn and optimize
across different LED driver designs. The choice
of driver topology is one knob a designer has
available to satisfy their design requirements. The
uniqueness of packaging the driver electronics,
heat sink form factors, and the LEDs themselves
can be other knobs. However, the reduction of
components to implement a design can become a
designers significant knob and Fairchilds
integrated MOSFET solutions are the answer.
Fairchild solutions include the following controller
options for the designer to choose from: the smart
non-isolated Power Factor Correction (PFC) buck
LED driver FLS0116 with integrated MOSFET or
the single stage PFC Primary Side Regulation
(PSR) flyback FLS3217 and FLS3247, both with
integrated MOSFETs. Before the benefits of these
controllers are highlighted, a few words on when
to integrate the MOSFET are required.
Eliminating the MOSFET saves the space required
to place the MOSFET as a separate package.
For example, using a 600V, 4.5A, 900m rated
MOSFET like the FCD900N60Z in a TO-252
(DPAK) package would require a printed circuit
board area of 6.7 x 10.4mm excluding additional
tolerance for manufacturability. Even using the
FCU900N60Z in a TO-251 (IPAK) package,
the printed board space would be 2.5 x 6.8mm
without additional manufacturing tolerances. Apart
from the space savings, an integrated MOSFET
controller solution would save on the cost of the
separate MOSFET packaging. The limitation of
using only the integrated MOSFET instead of
optimizing the design for specific MOSFET sizes is

offset when considering the inventory management

of one of these Fairchild integrated solution
controllers versus a controller and several
or more MOSFET part numbers. From a part
count consideration, the reliability of the system
increases provided the package thermal design
is adequate.
The FLS0116, FLS3217 and FLS3247 with their
integrated MOSFETs are able to support designs
targeting worldwide input voltages. These designs
also integrate PFC, making these optimal solution
knobs for low power LED applications. With the
addition of the integrated power MOSFET, these
devices help decrease design time since the
MOSFET is included into the controller. Equipped
with cycle-by-cycle current limiting and integrated
protection features such as over-temperature
protection (OTP) and under-voltage lockout
(UVLO) these devices help to significantly improve
LED system reliability.
The FLS0116 utilizes an adopted digital
technique that automatically detects AC and DC
input voltage conditions, enabling and disabling

STLUX385A Digital PWM Controller for Lighting and Power Conversion

Digital Solution Introduces State Machine,

Event Driven (SMED) Technology and
Allows New High Efficiency Power
Conversion Applications
STLUX385A is the first fully digital solution to
be introduced in lighting and power conversion
applications. STLUX385A has been successfully
integrated in a wide range of architectures and
applications, starting from simple buck converters
for LED driving, boost for power factor correction
(PFC), half bridge resonant converters for LED
street lighting and TV power supplies, up to full
bridge control in HID lamp ballasts and wireless
power chargers.
Digital Innovation
STLUX385A is first to introduce the SMED digital
technology for PWM generation and brings a
previously unseen degree of customization in
power conversion architectures. Designers can
use STLUX385A to easily implement new
application specific algorithms to increase the
overall system efficiency.
STLUX385A replaces expensive DSPs, reduces
the application cost and time to market and
embraces lighting applications thanks to the
integrated Dali Slave interface, compatible with
both IEC60929 and IEC62386.
Power Conversion Made Easy
SMED is a hardware state machine where the
state advancement is automatically triggered by
internal or external events. SMED is designed to
replace and extend the functionalities of traditional
analog architecture. In a power supply application,
for example, a SMED can close the regulation loop
and automatically switch OFF the circuit when it

detects an overcurrent or a short circuit, avoiding

serious damages. Since the SMEDs are entirely
implemented in hardware, they guarantee an
event reaction time shorter than the one provided
by any standard interrupt driven microprocessor.
STLUX385A includes 4 analog comparators with
internally generated and external references, an
ADC with 8 channels sequencer and an integrated
low power microcontroller.
The device is released with software drivers and
application examples, minimizing development
time. The development tools include a powerful
graphical SMED configurator which generates
C code.

i.MX6 Single or Dual Core at 1GHz Multimedia Processor

Small community sponsored Linux boards get a lot of attention these days, especially
given the price point of some proprietary ARM11 System on Chip processors with POP
memory. While this is fantastic for educational purposes, if you eventually want to bake
your own pies, you soon conclude it would really be nice to actually have somewhere
to buy the raw ingredients such as flour and eggs, and evenraspberries.
The magic of Wandboard is that not only is it an open community supported board,
which uses the powerful ARM Cortex-A9 Freescale i.MX6 family of single, dual and
quad core processors, but both the complete datasheets for the chips and the board
itself are all published. If your philosophy is to start building from the first stone,
you can even buy a single piece of an i.MX6 chip and separate memory from Future
Electronics.
But youre a Wizard at electronics and after experimenting, learning and prototyping
with a community board youll want to get down to work building your own custom
product quickly. Because Wandboard is a modular System on Module (SOM) solution based on the open EDM standard, Future Electronics can help you transition to a
production product using a commercially supported version of the module with 10+
year life and extended temperature operation.
