TUTORIAL 1 (CHAPTER 2: FORCE VECTORS)

21. If = 30 and T = 6 kN, determine the magnitude of the resultant force acting on the
eyebolt and its direction measured clockwise from the positive x-axis.

Step 1: Resolve the forces into x and y axes/ components:

x axis/ components (FR)x

y axis/ components (FR)y

(T)x = 6 kN sin 30 = 3 kN

(T)y = 6 kN cos 30 = 5.196 kN

(8kN)x = 8kN cos 45 = 5.657 kN

(8kN)y = -8kN sin 45 = -5.657 kN

Step 2: Find the resultant force by summing up all forces components:

+(FR)x = Fx = 3 kN + 5.657 kN = 8.657 kN
+(FR)y = Fy = 5.196 kN 5.657 kN = -0.461 kN
Step 3: Find the magnitude
The magnitude of the resultant force:
FR = [(FR)x]2 + [(FR)y]2
FR = [8.657]2 + [-0.461]2
FR = 8.669 kN

Step 4: Calculate the direction

= tan-1 [(FR)y/( FR)x]
= tan-1 [(0.461)/(8.657)]
= 3.048

22. If = 60 and T = 5 kN, determine the magnitude of the resultant force acting on the
eyebolt and its direction measured clockwise from the positive x-axis.

Step 1: Resolve the forces into x and y axes/ components:

x axis/ components (FR)x

y axis/ components (FR)y

(T)x = 5 kN sin 60 = 4.33 kN

(T)y = 5 kN cos 60 = 2.5 kN

(8kN)x = 8kN cos 45 = 5.657 kN

(8kN)y = -8kN sin 45 = -5.657 kN

Step 2: Find the resultant force by summing up all forces components:

+(FR)x = Fx = 4.33 kN + 5.657 kN = 9.987 kN
+(FR)y = Fy = 2.5 kN 5.657 kN = -3.157 kN
Step 3: Find the magnitude
The magnitude of the resultant force:
FR = [(FR)x]2 + [(FR)y]2
FR = [9.987]2 + [-3.157]2
FR = 10.474 kN

Step 4: Calculate the direction

= tan-1 [(FR)y/( FR)x]
= tan-1 [(3.157)/(9.987)]
= 17.54
