English is the most
international language in the
world, spoken by millions of
people. It is the language of
politics, pop music and of
most
films
and
TV
programmes.
A
lot
of
vocabulary in the areas of
computing, business, science,
medicine and air and sea
travel is also in English: British and American English. That is why many languages have
imported English words. For example, 5% of French vocabulary comes from English.
Most recent estimates suggest that 377 million people speak English as a first
language. The two largest concentrations are the USA (226 million) and the UK (56 million).
The number of people who use English as a second language is not known. Estimates suggest
that between 300 and 750 million people speak English as a foreign language.
Many people are learning English for reasons as diverse as listening to rock music and
understanding computers. Three quarters of the worlds mail is written in English.
English has for a century and a half been called a world language, but only recently the
world language.
