BEST FORM OF GOVERNMENT FOR THE PHILIPPINES

People would always complain about the government and its institutions.
Come to think of it what would be the best form of government for the
Philippines?
As for me, Democracy is the form of government that best suits the
Philippines. Some would say Im crazy and some would say Im not but before
we go to any conclusions let us first discuss what democracy is and its
mechanics as to prove my claim that it is best for our country.
Let us first define what democracy is. Democracy is a form of
government in which all eligible citizens are meant to participate equally either
directly or, through elected representatives, indirectly in the proposal,
development and establishment of the laws by which their society is run. As
the famous quote states it is the government of the people by the people and
for the people. Freedom and democracy are often used interchangeably, but
the two are not synonymous. Democracy is indeed a set of ideas and principles
about freedom, but it also consists of practices and procedures that have been
molded through a long, often tortuous history.
Democracy is a form of government where the people of legal age votes
for their ideal leaders for any particular position in the government. This alone
convinces me that it is suitable for the Philippines. Let us now go further and
discuss the characteristics of democracy.
The following are the characteristics of democracy. Democracy is
government, in which power and civic responsibility are exercised by all adult
citizens, directly, or through their freely elected representatives. Democracy
rests upon the principles of majority rule and individual rights. Democracies
guard against all-powerful central governments and decentralize government to
regional and local levels, understanding that all levels of government must be
as accessible and responsive to the people as possible. Democracies
understand that one of their prime functions is to protect such basic human
rights as freedom of speech and religion; the right to equal protection under
law; and the opportunity to organize and participate fully in the political,
economic, and cultural life of society. Democracies conduct regular free and
only rights, but also the responsibility to participate in the political system
that, in turn, protects their rights and freedoms. Democratic societies are
committed to the values of tolerance, cooperation, and compromise. In the
words of Mahatma Gandhi, Intolerance is itself a form of violence and an
obstacle to the growth of a true democratic spirit.
Those mentioned above are the characteristics of a democracy at first
glance it is very ideal but the real question is it really suitable for the
Philippines? I would commit myself in arguing that this kind of government is
best for the Philippines from its characteristics to the main goal of such
government who would argue that this is not best for our country.
Still some people would argue that if such kind of government is best for
our country why are we still one of the poorest country in the world or some
would call the third world country. I myself ask myself about it asking is too
much freedom bad for the country?. Then after reading articles and watching
the news I realized that I am asking the wrong question, the right question to
be asked is that did we voted the right persons in the government?.
Here in our country there is what we call political dynasties where a
certain family is those who are in these government positions for a long period
of time. No wonder why our country is one of the most corrupt governments.
All we can see in the news are about ill-gotten wealth by high ranking officials
and other personalities tied with these politicians. We forget to feature people
suffering from the wrong doing of those people sitting at their offices paid by
the taxes of the suffering masses.
In short it is not the kind of government we have that is the problem but
rather the people who are voted in these government positions that is. Imagine
a government with no corruption, would people still insist of changing the form
of government we have? Finally even though I strongly recommend democracy
as a form of government as long as the statement above happens which is close
to impossible any form of government will do for our country.
