Turning the pages of a book, drinking water, using the telephone, or changing channels on
TV using a remote are some things that we do effortlessly. Yet these seemingly simple things
are impossible to do for a quadriplegic like Gary Finkle. He is paralyed after an accident
and cannot use his arms and legs. He has lost almost all sensation and mo!ement below his
shoulders due to se!ere in"uries to the spinal cord. #ut he has recei!ed help from an
une$pected quarter. %ead on to find out more.
There was Garys house. He lives on a hilltop near the village Andes, near New York. Gary
was totally dependent on his wife, Micki, and a feale capuchin onkey naed !o. Gary was
confined to a wheelchair. He was using a outhstick to control a sall laser pointer attached
to his wheelchair. "ith it, he use to direct !o to do what he wants.
The outhstick was Garys ain tool. He was using it for practically for everything # to turn
the pages of a $ook, to use the telephone, to change channels on television, to work on the
coputer, and to direct !o. %f the outhstick drops to the floor, !o picks it up andputs it $ack
into Garys outh.
Gary and !o are insepara$le. !o has $rought a$out a real difference in Garys life. &% definitely
