Magazine Analysis

Magazine 1 Magazine 2
Colour
Colours can have different
associations or
connotations.
What
mood/impression/tone do
the colours create?

NME
Front cover: The headline and
coverlines are big and bold
which show that these fonts
are important and shows the
reader the articles which are
inside the magazine. The
black background with the
white words makes them
even more impacting and
underlining each coverline
with vibrant colours (blue red
yellow) makes it even more
eye-catching. The main image
is normal however, he is
wearing a crown of thorns like
Jesus only it has a modern
twist with huge needles
showing you imagery of
thorns.
Contents Page: The contents
page is actually colourless
apart for a few bits of red
dotted around the page. The
red is used well because its
addressing the main stories
and features inside the
magazine. The white text
surrounded by a black
background for certain parts
also shows importance
however, this isnt as
impacting as the red used on
the page
Double page spread: This uses
a mix of different colours such
as the Black writing with a
yellow border and behind the
border you have a black
background you are
immediately attracted to this.
The white subheading is also
impacting because the font is
large and the text is white so
its attracting to the reader but
youre immediately attracted
to the short sentence in the
yell9ow box which the
magazines aims to do to show
the artist to the reader.

MOJO (the music magazine)

Front cover: is full of colour it is
split into 3 separate colours (blue,
red and white) this is probably
signifying that it is an English
magazine focusing mostly on U.K.
bands. The main image is full of
cover as well the red dip dyed hair
the black eyeliner and other make
up used to show her emotions.
The image goes well with the
coverlines and masthead because
the colours of the musician are
exactly the same to the colour of
the text surrounding her.

Contents page: The magazine is
full of advertisement so the
contents is put on a double page.
The contents page 1 is rather
unique because of the colourful
picture in the background and the
outfits the two people are
wearing. The contents heading is
bold in your face and the different
stories in the issue all have sub-
headings (features, cover story,
regulars, what goes on, mojo
fixtures). The colours for these are
in red to show them as headings
and words of importance. It also
directs you to the pages for each
story covered by giving you the
page number and a small
description of each story.

The pictures on contents page 2
are full of colour and this entices
you to see what the images are
relating to the text in the
magazine.
Double page spread: There are
quite a few dps but theres one
which really attracts you to see
what it is all about. The heading is
in a format where its meant to
give the impression of wet paint
dripping down and this then leads
on to a blue and white coloured
paragraph which also gets your
attention. This then leads on to
the article and even the drop
capital has the same effect of wet
paint dripping. This infused with
the black and white image makes
the colours that more effective.

Design
How do the words and
images fit together?
What fonts and styles of
lettering have been used,
and what do they suggest?

The design of the image
relating to the text right next
to it shows representation
and the words being sons-
serif fonts adds impact and
having his name in a larger
format shows that he is the
main story that is going to be
covered in the magazine.

Contents page: This page also
uses sons-serif font and the
name of the magazine is
present and this is a recurring
image inside the magazine.
The two images on the
contents page link with the
headlines underneath them.

Double page spread: The
double page spread is
incorporating then images in
the background with the text
in the front and the text is
also using sons-serif font and
this typeface is used
throughout the magazine. The
design of the four separate
images coming together and
split into corners by the text
in the middle of the page is a
good idea and makes you
focus on the text and the
added vibrancy also makes it
eye catching
Front cover: The front cover is so
vibrant and in your face you
couldnt miss it whether you
wanted to. The main image being
directly in the middle of the page
is so impacting and the coverlines
and masthead covering the
outside of the image makes it that
more important. The buzzword
and promotion of the FREE CD!
also makes it that more impacting
on the readers eye. The colours
of the coverlines and masthead
make every article look like it is
the main story and this just makes
you want to buy it and see whats
inside.

Contents page: The colour yet
again makes you want to see
what articles are being covered
and the image of the man in the
military uniform with the logo
music in the reflection of the
mirror makes it a bit comical. The
subheadings giving the illusion of
a document being opened and
seeing the contents inside it is a
inquisitive and new to the reader.

Double page spread: The double
page spread has a great layout
with the black and white image in
the background with the
overlapping text giving off the
impression of wet paint which can
be linked to the black and white
image and the blue text
incorporated is also eye catching
and makes you want to read that
one paragraph at the very least.
Images
Usually, the image on the
cover and contents page(s)
represents the ideal that
the target reader would
like to aspire to. Or it is
directly related to a main
story. Or it is directly
related to VALS.
Who or what is featured,
and what does it
represent?

Front cover: The main image
is eye catching because the
artist has a distinctive look on
him with the tattoos,
jewellery, direct gaze and the
crown of needles on his head.
Which is in the very least
unique! This draws you in and
makes you wonder why he
has it on so the reader may
find interesting enough to buy
the magazine to see what the
article is about. The red
colour is also showing blood
or it depends on the readers
opinion on the certain colour
and the emotions it brings
out.

Contents page: There are only
two images on this contents
page and the text is right
main thing used in this
contents page to show
importance however, the
images also show some
importance on the stories
which are inside the
magazine. This also
introduces the bands.

Double page spread: The
double page spread shows
four separate images of him
with boxing gloves showing
him fighting and this is
related to the text in the
middle of the page and to the
side of the page. Where he is
doing these poses to signify
he is fighting against the
corporate media.

Front cover: The main image is so
intense with the direct gaze and
the immersion of all the colours
coming together really makes it
impacting and just draws you in to
pick upon the magazine and look
at the contents of the magazine.

Contents page: The image on the
contents page is the very first
thing you look at the man in the
chair looking directly at you,
looking confident and sitting as if
he was an authority figure this can
be established by the clothing he
is wearing this contrasts with the
woman in the background who is
wearing a pink dress this all
comes together to give a powerful
photo full of colour and gives of
mixed emotions.

Double page spread: The double
page spread has a massive image
that spreads across the two
pages. The image is in black &
white and is shown in this light
because the text is what they
want you to focus on to see what
the article is all about.

Pose, style, hair, make-up
What impressions do these
create for the reader?

Front cover: The main image
of Johnny Marr is relatable
because of the clothing and
body art however, the
decorative headpiece is rather
unique The clothing is
normal relaxed wear, you can
see he is an artistic person
because he has jewellery,
tattoos and painted nails! The
only odd thing apart from the
painted nails is the crown of
metal which is supposed to
signify the crown of thorns
that Jesus had to wear this
gives you the impression he is
fighting for what he believes
in and is starting a revolution
on how people think about
certain issues of the world.

Contents page: In the
contents page there are two
separate bands both posing in
the same fashion laidback and
rebellious this is shown by the
style of the music they play
from the description
underneath the picture:- Her
new power-punk trio unveil a
superb debut.

Double page spread: This
musician is also showing a
different attitude and
appearance, in the pictures
we can see him striking a
number of different poses
with different camera shots to
show his facial expressions
and body language the boxing
gloves show hes a fighter but
this might signify he is fighter
in a different sense which is
supported by the quotation
The Radiohead frontman
declares war on the industrys
self-elected gatekeepers.
Front cover: The main image of
Siouxsie and the banshees is full
of colour and has her own unique
look. The red and black dip-dyed
hair, the white make-up, black
eyeliner and red lipstick all make
the blue eyes become even more
vibrant. All these colours show
she has a whole range of
emotions in her personality. The
colours she has and uses all
entwine as one with the colours
used on the coverlines.

Contents page: The contents page
has lots of different images and
bands/artists present. The main
image has the man sitting in the
chair looking like an authority
figure while the smaller compact
images all have tons of colour
included. The Leonard Cohen
image is full of vibrancy as well as
the green man in the festival
Glade in flame.

Double page spread: The dps has
the image of Vic Godard from
1982 and this old black and white
image is shot without him posing
it was just free flowing. The image
incorporates the use of colour
very well.
How are words used
cover, contents page, dps?
Title and strapline
Cover lines
Puffs/buzz words
What do they suggest
about whats inside?
How do they suggest the
interests of the readers?
Can you identify the
contents at a glance?
Size and layout are they
big enough to be read from
a distance?
Will they stand out on a
shelf?

Front page: The words are
bold and impacting, the main
story or feature inside the
magazine is in a larger format
while the other coverlines are
in smaller text although all
the stories are underlined to
show their importance. The
quotation hes not the
Messiah, hes a very naughty
boy which is relatable to the
image and is well known
because it is from Monty
pythons Life of Brian is also
attracting for the reader.
Surprisingly there are very
few buzzwords on the front
cover to attract the readers
eye, although the image with
the direct gaze and the bold
impacting words are what the
magazine use to draw you in
to buy the magazine. The
other stories also show that
inside the magazine the
stories will be mainly
surrounding certain musicians
and the festivals that have
taken place and are going to
take place in the future.

Contents page: The contents
page has quite a lot of text
about the stories inside and it
is split into a three column
layout with the each different
type of issue covered. The
sub-headings are Regulars,
features and band list this
means you can choose which
parts you wish to look at in
the magazine.

Double page spread: The dps
is spotted with text and this
comes together because the
layout of the dps somehow
brings it all together and the
language used is sophisticated
and full of descriptive
language about his thoughts
and feelings on certain issues.
Front cover: The front cover is
showing the masthead as the
biggest word on the page this
differentiates to NME and I think
it works really well. The coverlines
are all in capitals and the text is in
serif font to make it easier to
read.

Contents page: The contents page
is in an arranged format with the
subheading in white bold capitals
with a red background and the
names of the bands are in bold
large text capitals also. The small
descriptions however, are in
normal 12 pt. text because the
description of what the article is
about is much more in depth
when you get to the story on the
page it is on.

Double page spread: The text of
the story is using sophisticated
language and the layout shows
the title in huge paint dropping
text and the large coloured text
underneath is also impacting. The
rest of the story underneath is in
smaller text although there is the
large drop capital that seems to
be melting down the page that
gives a nice effect

Language
How does it address the
reader and grab their
attention?
What language features
can you identify?

The language used is simple
and not sophisticated on the
front cover although in the
contents page and dps there
is a lot of descriptive,
sophisticated language used
as well as terminology about
music such as The guitarist-
turned-frontman talks vice,
virtue, and outside music
ahead of the release of his
second solo album Why the
intensely private New Order
singer is finally giving his side
of the story in a new
autobiography.
The language is colloquial in some
sense because you need to know
the certain styles of music being
played and the text is also
intellectual for some parts and
simple in others.
Overall impression how
effective is the cover,
contents page, dps?
Does it give a good
indication of whats inside?
Who is it designed to
appeal to, and how does it
represent the readers
interests?
What sort of readers are
not addressed and why?

Front cover: The front cover is
without a doubt an attention
grabbing page with lots of
bold text and vibrant colours
to attract your attention, The
masthead is bright and in
your face while the main
coverline and other coverlines
also attract you because they
are underlined in different
vibrant colours. The main
image is also impacting and
the detail of the crown and
the medium close up of the
musician with the tattoos and
jewellery is also interesting to
the reader. The added direct
gaze given off also entices you
to look at what the
magazines about.

Contents page: In my opinion
I think the contents page is
actually dull and destitute but
it does use some features that
are attracting. It is spilt into
three separate columns
(regulars, features, band list),
and the simple black and
white infused with the read
heading/sub-headings are
also impacting and shows the
importance of these words.

Double page spread: The
double page spread is
interesting and the layout is
Front cover: The front cover of the
magazine is full of colour and the
image is what made me want to
see what was inside the magazine
because it just drew me in, the
added CD which was free
(included in the price!) also made
me want to buy it the buzzwords
always make you want to buy
something. The text is nice and
colourful although I dont focus on
it.

Contents page: The contents page
is what really grabbed my
attention the image is full of
colour and gives off so many
emotions. This image followed by
the bold text and information
given really made me want to
read every bit of text on the page
to see what this has to offer. The
second contents page is full of
images put together like a
montage and this all relates to the
text next to it.
The double page spread is done in
a really professional way with the
melting lettering smearing the
image and the blue text being
right in your face.
presented in an interesting
format. The images used and
the bold vibrant yellow
sentence in the middle of the
page which connects the rest
of the dps is what really
catches my attention and
makes me want to know
about this guy and what type
of message he is trying to
send across.
