THE PHILOSOPHY OF OUR PROGRAM
We believe in a comrehensive theatre education at the undergraduate level. There!ore, all our students
are re"uired to study and actively articiate in all areas o! theatre. Per!ormance$oriented students must
also study and ractice theatre technology. Technology+design$oriented students must also study and
articiate at some level in the er!ormance e%erience. The same is true !or students whose emhasis
is on management, design, directing, or theatre education. In .ddition, everyone in theatre must also
understand its history and imortant theories.
Theatre is a disciline that one cannot master just by taking classes. It must be racticed as well as
studied. The !aculty and sta!! regard deartment roductions as teaching laboratories. There!ore, we
lace e"ual imortance on course work and on roduction e%erience. In order to ensure that every
theatre major gets roduction e%erience .// 0.1)2, .23 234UI235 T) P.2TI6IP.T3 I7

is not enough; articiation in the technical asects o! utting a show together is an essential art o! the
theatre e%erience. While this re"uirement is, on the one hand, a ractical necessity i! lays are going to
be roduced, it is also, on the other hand, the best way to ut knowledge learned in the classroom to use.

DEGREE DESCRIPTIONS
The theatre rogram o!!ers a *... and a *.F... degree.
The *... degree is a comrehensive, liberal arts degree with courses in all the basic asects o!
theatre. This degree contains a !airly e"ual balance o! academic, technical and er!ormance
courses. It o!!ers the student with a general interest in theatre the oortunity !or a good
undergraduate education with a certain amount o! seciali&ation. . student who graduates with
this degree will be a good candidate !or graduate school in a number o! di!!erent discilines.
With the addition o! a second course in directing and a small number o! seci!ic education
courses 'o!!ered in FIUJs 6ollege o! 3ducation(, you can become eligible !or certi!ication to
teach theatre in FloridaJs ublic education system. For more in!ormation about becoming
certi!ied to teach, lease contact the deartmentJs academic advisor.
The *.F... is a re$ro!essional selective degree designed to reare you !or a ro!essional
theatre career, and+or advanced ro!essional theatre training. *.F... and *... candidates
comlete a similar curriculum in the !irst two years o! study. Pending deartmental aroval,
*.F... candidates then go on to take advanced courses in er!ormance or design. *.F... students
are evaluated each semester with er!ormance juries and ort!olio reviews by the !aculty.
,tudents who graduate with this degree either go on to graduate school, ro!essional internshi,
advanced conservatory rogram or roceed directly to work in ro!essional theatre or a related
!ield using other media.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
FRESHMEN
.ll !reshmen are assigned an advisor in the 6ollege o! Undergraduate ,tudies and must be
advised there as long as they are in that college. Freshmen theatre students must also be advised
by their academic advisor in the theatre deartment, and need to do this *3F)23 they meet with
their Undergraduate ,tudies advisor whenever ossible. The reason !or this is that it is much
easier to !it your 6)23 classes around your theatre schedule than vice versa. The theatre degree
rogram is designed as a !our$year rogram, which means there are some theatre courses you
need to take as a !reshman i! your rogress towards comleting the degree is to roceed in a
timely manner. 2egardless o! what you are told by the Undergraduate ,tudies advisor, you are
not to wait until you have !inished your 6)23 classes be!ore starting courses in your major.
Please re!er to the major mas on ages to see the course rogression through the core and the
major.
TRANSFER STUDENTS
,tudents trans!erring !rom indeendent Florida and out$o!$state colleges into the UniversityJs
uer division must have maintained a minimum <.A grade oint average based uon a C.A scale.
6oursework trans!erred or acceted !or credit toward an undergraduate degree must be
comleted at an institution accredited as degree$granting by a regional accrediting body or at an
institution accredited as degree granting by a national accrediting agency recogni&ed by the
United ,tates 5eartment o! 3ducation that articiates in the statewide course numbering
system at the time the coursework was comleted. 3ach academic deartment reserves the right
to determine how trans!er credits may be alied to satis!y the seci!ic re"uirements !or the
F
major and+or degree. ,tudents must contact their academic deartment to obtain any additional
re"uirement needed !or their rogram o! study.
,tudents who trans!er !rom any Florida ublic community college with an .... degree are
admissible to the university. 9owever, that does not mean they are automatically admitted to the
theatre rogram. .dmission to our theatre degree rogram is redicated uon comleting a
success!ul audition !or all *.+*F. Per!ormance candidates or an interview+ort!olio review !or
all *.F... 5esign candidates. *.F... er!ormance candidates must reare two audition ieces
and suly a resume o! their theatre e%erience and at least two letters o! recommendation.
,tudents who audition !or the *F. in Per!ormance who are not acceted but who are acceted
into the *. rogram, may, uon comleting .cting I= and =oice and 0ovement II, re$audition
!or the *F. er!ormance degree. .dmission is selective and based on observable talent and
ro!essional otential. 6andidates reare one classical monologue and one contemorary
monologue to be resented to the er!ormance !aculty. The studentJs work in classes will also be
!actored into the decision. ,uccess!ul candidates will demonstrate otential in the !ollowing
areas#
$Te%t analysis and the world o! the lay.
$9igh stakes and strong deely !elt objectives.
$Use o! language, rhythm, and musicality in er!ormance.
$2ela%ed and articulate body and voice.
*... candidates need to resent and are re"uired to have one recommendation letter.
*.F... design students do not need to reare audition ieces but should reare !or an e%tensive
interview, at which they must resent a ort!olio o! their work, resume and two letters o!
recommendation.
*... candidates whose interest is in technical theatre or stage management need to reare !or an
interview, at which time they will resent a ort!olio o! their rior work, resume and one letter o!
recommendation.

The same admission rules aly to students who trans!er !rom other !our$year institutions. In
regard to trans!erring theatre credits, FIU will only trans!er in a ma%imum o! GA credits, and
these credits will all be lower division credits. .ny uer division theatre credits or credits
beyond the GA credit limit that you may want to trans!er in have to be evaluated by the academic
advisor !irst.
The theatre !aculty has the right to deny acceting any credits not deemed alicable or
e"uivalent to the re"uired FIU theatre curriculum. .ll trans!er students who are acceted as
theatre majors must bring a coy o! their transcrits !rom their revious institutions to their !irst
advising aointment so the theatre credits can be evaluated and the roer aerwork can be
started i! credits beyond the automatic GA the university accets are acceted !or trans!er by the
deartment.
I! there is a "uestion about the alicability or e"uivalency o! a given course, the student will
need to rovide suorting materials, such as catalogue descritions and+or syllabi to hel in
determining whether to accet the course. In most cases we will accet the credits !or trans!er,
with the notable e%cetion o! er!ormance classes. Placement in the acting se"uence really is
deendent on the audition and interview results, regardless o! the number o! acting, voice or
movement classes taken elsewhere. The same e%cetion is true !or uer division design related
classes. Placement o! Trans!er students in the design se"uence is determined by the ort!olio and
interview, regardless o! revious course work in design.
D
Please be aware that FIU has a re"uirement that all students must take at least ?A credits in
residence to receive a degree !rom FIU and that at least hal! o! the re"uired curriculum in your
major must be taken in residence. .lso, the last ?A credits that you take !or your FIU degree
must be taken at FIU, regardless o! whether the courses are in your major.
ADVISING
7ew theatre students will be assigned to an advisor. .t your initial advising session you will
receive a coy o! the theatre curriculum !or the degree rogram !or which you have been
acceted. The advising system will be e%lained to you and you will receive your schedule o!
theatre courses !or the coming semester. .cademic 9olds are ut on all majors to make sure you
come in !or advising. Iou wonJt be able to register until the 9old is li!ted. While 9olds are not
ut on !or the summer terms, you still need to see your advisor i! you lan on taking any theatre
classes because most o! them re"uire advisor ermission in order to register.

SPECIAL COURSES
There are two tyes o! secial courses in the deartment# T93 C@-G N 2esearch and
T93 C@BA N Theatre Internshi. While a certain number o! credits in these secial
courses are re"uired in the *.F... design curriculum, these courses are not reserved
e%clusively !or design majors.
In the case o! T93 C@-G N 2esearch, you may, with the rior aroval o! the ro!essor
who will direct the study and the 5eartment 6hair, earn credit !or study in seci!ic areas
not normally covered in the regular course o!!erings. ,ome seciali&ed studies in the ast
have included intensive study in ,hakeseareJs language, seciali&ed vocal studies,
intensive study in the work o! one laywright or one theatre ractitioner that resulted in a
signi!icant !inal roject, etc. ,ince directing a research study involves additional work
!or the ro!essor, the decision as to whether to arove a research roject is at the
discretion o! that ro!essor and the 5eartment 6hair. .roval is not automatic.
2esearch credits are not to be used to just get an e%tra credit to bring a class schedule u
-G
to !ull time status !or scholarshi uroses, say, with no real e%ectation that work has to
be done. 2esearch credits cannot be used in lace o! courses normally o!!ered.
Iou must rovide a written statement describing the scoe, content and intent o! the
research, how the work will be suervised and the basis !or grading to the ro!essor and
the 6hair be!ore you can register !or the course. *ecause the number o! credits !or
research is variable, all arties must agree in advance on the number o! credits !or which
you can register. The advisors must sign o!! on this agreement or you will not receive a
ermit number to register !or the course.
INTERNSHIP
T93 C@BA N Theatre Internshi, is a course designed to give credit !or work done in a
concentrated theatre situation. It is a re"uired art o! the curriculum !or design majors,
but it has otential alications in other theatre discilines as well, articularly in the
areas o! stage management. Internshis are meant to be conducted o!!$camus in
ro!essional settings and advanced workshos to comlement the work you do within the
deartment. Iou must make all the arrangements !or doing an internshi well in advance
o! actually beginning it. The criteria !or granting ermission to register !or an internshi
include#
-. The organi&ation must be recogni&ed by the !aculty as one with a ro!essional
standard and strong record o! accomlishment
<. The e%erience should be di!!erent !rom that which can be obtained at FIU.
?. Iour work will be ade"uately suervised and evaluated.
C. Iour internshi e%erience will be worthwhile in terms o! ac"uiring new
knowledge and skills.
.nyone needing or wishing to take an internshi must resent a roosal to the ro!essor
who will be the teacher o! record !or the course and to their !aculty mentor. This
roosal should contain seci!ic in!ormation about the nature and scoe on the internshi
work as well as the method o! evaluation. Internshi alication !orms are available in
the back o! the handbook or in the deartmentJs main o!!ice. .t the conclusion o! the
internshi you need to hand in a detailed journal and ensure that your internshi
suervisor submits an evaluation and a suggested grade to the teacher o! record so your
grade can be roerly submitted.
COURSE AIVERS
0ost o! the in!ormation about trans!er credits was covered in the T2.7,F32
,TU537T, section. 9owever, there are a !ew other imortant ieces o! in!ormation
about which trans!er students need to be aware. *esides the GA credit limit on trans!er
credits, students need to recogni&e that not all courses are created e"ual, esecially
courses that may carry the same title as a lower division course at a community college as
they do at the uer division level at FIU. While a course may have the same title that
does not mean that it is the same course. *e!ore we will waive a re"uired course, the
-F
student must convince the instructor o! the course that he or she knows all the material
covered in that course. I! the instructor agrees that a articular course can be waived, the
student will still o!ten have to take another course instead in order to have enough credits
to graduate. Please be aware articularly that a lower division directing course is not
e"uivalent to the FIU directing course and that a waiver in this instance is not ossible.
2emember also, that lacement in the er!ormance se"uence is not determined solely on
ast acting, voice and+or movements classes but on how well the audition and interview
session is conducted. Placement in the design se"uence is not determined solely on ast
classes taken but on how well the ort!olio review and interview session is conducted.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
Atten#an$e: The Theatre 5eartment uholds a strict unctuality and attendance olicy.
Iou are ermitted one eG$use# absence during the semester. Fou! aFsen$es will result in
!ailing the class. 3%cused absences are allowed onl- in eGt!eme $i!$umstan$es and
re"uire aroriate documentation within a week o! the absence. 3%amles o!
documentation might include a doctorJs note, death certi!icate or obituary notice o! a
!amily member. 3%cused absences also include recogni&ed religious holidays. 9owever,
i! you ac"uire !ive or more absences !or a #o$umente# me#i$al o! e!sonal eme!6en$-
you may be re"uired to reeat the course.
Con#u$t: Iou should also be aware that i! you engage in any unro!essional or unsa!e
behavior during class you may be ask to leave the classroom. T"is 5ill $ount as an
uneG$use# aFsen$e. I! you leave class early this can be counted as an absence i! the
instructor desires.
Pun$tualit-: reeated tardiness is unaccetable. I! you arrive 4i,e minutes a!ter the
attendance has been taken you will be marked as being late. T"!ee late a!!i,als eHual
one uneG$use# aFsen$e. I! you are absent or tardy !or a class you are resonsible !or the
material and in!ormation covered in the class that day.
Iou should also be aware that i! an assignment is due and the entire class is unreared
the instructor has the right to cancel the class session that day and may give each student
an une%cused absence i! the situation warrants such action.
SUMMER ATTENDANCE
Atten#an$e in t"e Summe!: The Theatre 5eartment uholds a strict unctuality and
attendance olicy. Iou are ermitted one eG$use# absence during the semester. T5o
aFsen$es will result in !ailing the class. ,ee attendance olicy above !or more detail
about e%cused absences, unctuality and conduct.
GRADING POLICY
Iou must ass all your theatre courses with a O6P or better in order !or them to count
towards graduation. 'O6$Pis not accetable.( .nything below a O6P is considered a
!ailing grade, meaning you will have to retake the course. FIU does have a OForgiveness
PolicyP whereby you may reeat a course, !ile a O2eeated 6ourseP !orm with the new
-D
grade and get the !ailed grade o!! your :P. but this olicy is soon coming to an end. Iou
may still do this a ma%imum o! three times without aying a enalty !ee. .!ter three
times, you must ay an e%ensive enalty !ee to use the O2eeated 6ourseP otion, so it
is in your best interests to get it right the !irst time.
7ot doing well in your theatre classes can also a!!ect your !inancial situation i! you are on
scholarshi, since all scholarshi students must ass their theatre classes with a O*P or
better to maintain their scholarshi. Please re!er to the Probation Policy in this 9andbook
!or more in!ormation on how grades can a!!ect your standing in the 5eartment.
I! you are lanning on attending graduate school you should also be aware that most
graduate rograms re"uire a O*P :P. or better !or admission.

ACADEMIC COMPLAINTS
I! you have a comlaint about a course or roduction e%erience, the !irst ste is to
discuss your concerns with either the directly involved !aculty. .ll !aculty and sta!! are
oen to discuss your concerns 'i.e. grades(. I! you take this initial ste and you !eel the
roblem still e%ists, talk to your area head 'design or er!ormance( or mentor !or more
assistance. .ll conversations are con!idential and nothing you say will be reorted to
anyone else without your ermission. I! your mentor or area head cannot solve the
roblem he or she will re!er you to the 5eartment 6hair !or more hel. I! the comlaint
or concern is still not solved you will be re!erred to the .ssociate 5ean o! .cademic
.!!airs o! the 6ollege o! .rchitecture and the .rts.
INCOMPLETES
The o!!icial FIU olicy on incomletes is that they are to be given only i! you are unable
to comlete the course because o! circumstances beyond your control. This usually
means serious illness or !amily roblems. Involvement in a roduction is not a legitimate
justi!ication !or allowing you to take an Incomlete. 6ollege olicy re"uires that when
an Incomlete is given, an agreement be drawn u identi!ying the work le!t to be done
and a comletion date. The instructor must submit this !orm to the o!!ice when the
grades are !iled. It is used as a re!erence when the work is comlete and a 69.7:3 )F
:2.53 !orm is comleted by the instructor and sent to the 2egistrar.
,tudents are allowed a ma%imum o! < terms 'this includes the summer term( in which to
make u the Incomlete. .!ter that time the grade automatically reverts to an OFP and
you will have to take the course again. There are certain secial case e%cetions to this
rule, but they re"uire e%tra aerwork and signatures all the way u to the ProvostJs
o!!ice and are not always aroved. I! you do receive an Incomlete !or a class, it is your
resonsibility to make it u according to the terms o! the agreement. The instructor is
under no obligation to remind you. Iou cannot graduate with an Incomlete on your
record. For !urther clari!ication about the universityJs olicy on Incomletes lease re!er
to the University course catalog.
SCHOLARSHIPS
. limited number o! scholarshis are available !or theatre majors. The !unding !or these
scholarshis mostly comes !rom the University ,cholarshi Fund and the 5ade 6ounty
-@
Fair )rgani&ation. The amounts o! money vary. The actual number and amount o!
scholarshis deend on the !unds available. Please remember that these are scholarshis,
not !inancial aid stiends.
In order to be considered !or a scholarshi a student must be a !ully admitted and
o!!icially declared theatre major. 9e or she must have received a * or better in all theatre
classes !or the last semester and must have articiated satis!actorily in a er!ormance or
roduction within the last two semesters.. ,cholarshi reciients should be e%emlary,
both academically and in roduction articiation.
,tudents need to be !ully enrolled with a credit load o! a minimum o! -< credits. In some
rare cases, seniors in their last semester may be considered !or a scholarshi even i! they
are only taking a hal! load o! G credits. This would be an e%cetion, not the rule.
,cholarshis do not automatically renew !rom term to term. ,tudents who want to be
considered !or scholarshis must realy each semester.
7oti!ication letters sent to the students will state the amount o! award as well as the term
awarded. ,cholarshis are awarded !or the !all+sring semesters. 7o scholarshis are
awarded !or the summer term. .n alication !orm is at the end o! this handbook or
available !rom the main o!!ice.
7otices are osted around the building near the end o! each term in!orming students that
scholarshi alications are available in the theatre o!!ice !or students to !ill out.
,tudents who are eligible should avail themselves o! this oortunity. *esides heling to
ay !or your education it looks good on your resume!
MAINTAINING ACADEMIC STANDARDS
.s a theatre student you will always have the roblem o! balancing the time demands o!
your classes along with roductions. *oth are imortant. The best theatre education
comes !rom being as busy as you can manage. The key to being a success!ul theatre
student is e!!icient ersonal time management. Iou must kee u with your class
assignments. .void the tendency to ut o!! doing work, because you will be caught with
due dates aroaching and insu!!icient time to catch u. Plan ahead to allow !or the
heavy time demands created by oening nights. *egin the major term rojects early to
avoid the end$o!$term and show$oening crunches.
Using your time e!!iciently may mean that you have to sacri!ice some o! your social and
recreational time, but the rewards you gain N a better education and less stress N are well
worth it. ,tudents who have jobs must lan to either work !ewer hours or carry a reduced
load and take a longer time to comlete the degree.
It is ultimately your resonsibility to determine how much o! a class and roduction load
you can manage. While there are certain restrictions in terms o! minimum course loads
and roduction articiation re"uirements, donJt over$commit to the oint where you end
u doing nothing well.
PRODUCTION PROGRAM
FIU Theatre is the roducing side o! the theatre rogram. The deartment roduces
shows in three di!!erent er!ormance saces; the Wertheim 0ain ,tage, the *lack *o%
Theatre and the ,tudio Theatre in 50 -BA. The main theatre contains a roscenium
<A
stage, !ly lo!t, orchestra it and a <-D seat auditorium. The *lack *o% theatre is a !le%ible
staging sace with a -BA seat caacity. *oth saces are suorted by dressing rooms, a
student lounge, a library, e%cellent lighting and sound caacities and scenery and costume
shos. The deartment also roduces lays in the ,tudio Theatre 50 -BA. This sace is
rimarily used !or student$directed shows, senior rojects and class$related roductions.
FIU Theatre announces the shows !or the ucoming season in the sring. The deartment
roduces !our main, !aculty+guest directed shows. .uditions are held late in the sring
term !or !all semester roductions and in late 7ovember !or sring semester shows. *F.
er!ormance students are re"uired to audition !or all roductions in the main season. .ll
er!ormance majors must accet the role !or which they have been cast. I!, !or
comelling reasons, you cannot accet a role in a given semester, you must discuss this
with both the director and 6hair o! the deartment be!ore or at the time o! the audition.
Work schedules outside o! the deartment do not constitute comelling reasons.
Theatre is a very demanding undergraduate major because it re"uires the student to juggle
academic courses and a busy roduction schedule. We understand that the cost o! higher
education has become e%tremely high and many college students may have to work.
9owever, theatre classes, lab hourJs crew calls and rehearsals !or our rogram run on a
set time table that we cannot change, !or each individual studentJs work schedule.
I! you have to work you must work your schedule around our schedule in order to be
success!ul theatre major. 0ake sure that you arrange your hours with your emloyer
accordingly and give them a lot o! notice when you are needed !or crew calls and
rehearsals, etc.
)ur major roductions serve several uroses. First, we regard them as the rimary
training laboratory !or our students. We reare the roductions using standards and
rocedures as close to a ro!essional level as ossible. 2ehearsals are lanned and run in
an organi&ed, discilined manner. .ctors are re"uired to adhere to attendance and
rearation olicies, and to ut !orth their best e!!ort in both rehearsal and er!ormance
situations. The sets, ros, costumes, lights and sound are o! ro!essional standards in
design and e%ecution and oeration. .ctive articiation in these roductions is essential
rearation !or advanced academic or ro!essional work.
The roductions also rovide live theatre e%eriences to the FIU and 0iami
communities. )ur roductions are one o! the imortant contacts the community has with
FIU. There!ore, it is imortant that we resent the best theatre ossible with our
resources.
CASTING POLICY
.ll students registered in .cting III through =III are re"uired to audition and accet roles
in our theatre roductions. )nly those students who have comleted and assed .cting I
and .cting II will be eligible !or casting. 5ue to the high skill level re"uired !or musical
theatre roductions we reserve the right to cast outside the deartment when necessary.
.ny student laced on robation will not be eligible !or casting in any roduction taking

****PRODUCTION ORK ASSIGMENTS
.ll theatre majors are re"uired to do roduction work on major roductions. 6asts and
roduction assignments are osted at the same time, and all students involved must initial
a!ter their name to acknowledge the accetance o! their seci!ic role and+ or assignment.
,tudents will also receive a contract seci!ying their assignment which they must sign
and return to T5. It is imortant to check the callboards everyday as notices are osted
with great !re"uency during the roduction rocess.
The !aculty and sta!! regard these assignments as being very imortant. We evaluate each
studentJs er!ormance o! his+her roduction articiation at the end o! each semester.
Failing to !ul!ill roduction assignments directly a!!ects eligibility toward scholarshis,
!uture !aculty recommendations and end o! the year evaluations. 3ach student will sign a
contractual obligation !or his+her articular roduction assignment and+or role.
P!o#u$tion Assi6nment Poli$-:
-. Freshmen will get one roduction assignment each semester o! their !reshmen
year. This assignment will be art o! the re"uired work !or ,tagecra!t and

ADVICE ABOUT A CAREER IN THEATRE
In choosing to reare !or a career in theatre, you have selected one o! the most
demanding and cometitive o! all ro!essions. There is an overabundance o! good, well$
trained eole !or every available job. This means that i! you are to have a success!ul
career you must have talent, training, disciline, dedication and assion.
Talent is the most roblematic ingredient. It can be recogni&ed and develoed when it
aears, but not created. Theatre talent usually takes some uncovering, so it is not always
<B
ossible to determine immediately whether one has it. It usually reveals itsel! gradually,
rather than in a sudden rush. I! asked, we will give you our oinions about your talent,
but remember that these oinions will be limited to what we have been able to observe in
your work.
.t this level, training, goal setting, disciline, and drive are more imortant than talent.
.ll o! your work should be aroached with this in mind. It is !oolish to e%ect success in
the theatre i! you do not ut your ma%imum e!!ort into every work session and rehearsal,
and i! you do not do your at$home rearation. Iou are going to be in cometition with
many others who have talent, and who regard theatre as the most imortant thing in their
lives and work accordingly. The surest measure we have !or redicting your !uture
success in theatre is to observe the degree to which you commit yoursel! to every theatre
activity at FIU.
SELECTION AND REJECTION
Theatre !unctions by selection# casting choices have to be made; roduction jobs
assigned; designers selected. ,ome eole are not chosen. This is as it should be. ,imly
deciding to major in theatre and taking classes will not make you a theatre ro!essional.
.t each ste u the ladder the numbers are reduced# !rom high school to community
college or lower division university; !rom there to uer division work; to graduate
training and !inally to ro!essional work. .s a theatre student you must be able to !ace
rejection. Failure to be cast in a lay does not mean that you have no !uture in the theatre.
The director will, i! asked, give you a ersonal evaluation o! your audition and reasons
!or the casting choices. In the meantime, use your oortunities. Take a small role, i!
o!!ered, and make the most o! it. 0ake the most o! your class rojects in scene study and
er!ormance e%ercises. :et involved with student roductions and reare well !or the
ne%t audition. Whether in class or in a roduction work hard and maintain a ositive
attitude.
I! you are continually turned down and not encouraged by your instructors you might
want to reconsider your career otions. Iour lace in theatre may be better suited as a
devoted amateur. *ut make this decision only a!ter you have worked as hard as you are
able and have done your very best.
LIFE AFTER FIU
. *achelorJs degree !rom FIU is not a assort to instant success in theatre. In most
cases, !urther training is necessary. For actors this usually means enrolling in a graduate
or ro!essional rogram. The good ones are highly selective, with entrance by auditions
that are usually held in the winter. It is absolutely essential to have a well$selected,
immaculately reared audition and a good grade oint average to be admitted into any
o! the "uality rograms.
<G
In the design !ields, graduate work in an 0.F... rogram is usually necessary. . good
ort!olio is essential !or admission. Iour advisor will hel you to reare. It is sometimes
ossible to secure jobs in the technical and business !ields with an undergraduate degree
i! you have e%tensive e%erience and strong recommendations. 9ere, too, !urther training
is re!erred.
THEATRE MINOR
The 5eartment also o!!ers a minor in Theatre, which comlements a number o! majors
in the university, including elementary education, hositality, sychology, olitical
science etc.
The minor in theatre is a <C credit minor. The !ollowing courses are re"uired# as is true o!
the theatre majors, theatre minors must earn a grade o! O6P or higher in all re"uired
courses to earn the theatre minor degree.

courses have lower division rere"uisites which must be

disciline will consult with and make a recommendation to the 5eartment 6hair, who
will have !inal aroval. We re!er our students to seek out ro!essional theatre+!ilm
oortunities in the summer. Please consult with the !aculty and visit the in!ormation
board in the hallway to !ind out about ossible summer oortunities.
The outside roject must have a clearly de!ined schedule with a de!inite end date.
