BBC SCOTTISH SYMPHONY

ORCHESTRA
FRI 05 MAR 2010 | 20.00
EMPIRE THEATRE

Our first appointment for 2010 is with the world-renowned

BBC SSO and British-born conductor Andrew Manze.
Andrew Manze is a passionate and articulate advocate of
early music. As a violinist he specialises in repertoire from
1610 to 1830. As a conductor, Manze is in great demand
among period and modern-instrument orchestras around
the world. He also teaches, edits and writes about music,
as well as broadcasting regularly on radio and television.
He is a presenter of BBC radio's Early Music Show, and has
established a reputation as one of the most stimulating and
energetic conductors of his generation.
Here he opens and closes the programme with works by
Brahms. The Tragic Overture, composed in 1880, has no
particular drama in mind, but perhaps evokes the mood of
high tragedy in general. The shadow of Beethoven loomed
heavily over Brahms, resulting in the 15-year gestation of
his First Symphony, only finished in his early forties - but
what a masterpiece. To complete the evening Stella
McCracken, principal oboe with the BBC SSO, plays EDEN COURT PRESENTS

ALL ROUND EDEN COURT
Joe Longthorne’s amazing career stretches back more than 30 years to
appearances on Junior Showtime, swiftly followed by an extended spell on the
Northern club circuit. He has battled and beaten cancer and bounced back from
bankruptcy. He is still one of Britain’s favourite recording artistes, with a string of
million-selling albums and high profile appearances under his belt.

Joe's repertoire of voices is almost endless and includes hundreds of the world's
top singers – he is however, best known for his uncanny impersonations of
Shirley Bassey who believes that "Joe can do me better than I can do myself".

It’s rare to find an artist these days with such universal appeal – Joe is one
of the old school; a true entertainer in the purest sense of the word.

Tickets will fly out of the door for this amazing, one night only event.
