Speech Title: Licenses for Parents!

General Purpose: To persuade

Specific purpose: To persuade my listeners that it is important to support issued initiatives to
protect children from abuse, even licensing parents.
Introduction: Eight year old Samara was the second of three children born to parents of age
twenty and 36. Samaras parents constantly neglected her and her siblings, emotionally and
physically abuse them for things like asking too much questions. Samara received a burn to her
face, with boiling water, from her father because she tried to tell some one her parents were
hurting her. This is just one of the countless stories of children suffering from abuse by their
parents who are unfit to care for another human being. This brings about so many questions;
should children continue to suffer everyday because their parents are unable to care for another
human being? Can the quality of parenting even improve? Should more steps be taken to ensure
protection of the future of our society? Should parents be licensed?
Credibility Material: According to statistics from Childhlep.org every ten seconds a report of
child abuse is given. Child abuse statistics from American Humane Association stated that 68.3
% of these reports would be for children being neglected by their parents.
Thesis: Today, I would show you that without a doubt steps must be taken to ensure that the
quality of parenting improve, even if it means issuing license to parents.

Preview: Firstly I would explain the adverse effects on children in homes with parents unfit to
care for them. Secondly I would show you how these effects affect the society and finally state
what you can do to improve the care that children receive from their parents.

Transition into body: Lets begin!
Main Point #1: We sometimes turn a blind eye to children whose parents cannot care for them
but these children are affected gravely.
Sub point #1: According to statistics from Childhlep.org (Statistic). Children would suffer from
other negative effects such as (List some effects)
Transition into Main Point #2 Not only is the child affected, lets see how these affect the
society that you and I live in.
Main point #2: A large number of who suffer from abuse would become adults who are
menaces to society

Sub Point #1: This increase in psychological disorders can only spell trouble. If we dont take a
stand now there would be increased pressure on our essential services (Law enforcement,
medical services) and there can cause increase worry for your own personal safety.
Sub Point #2:
Transition into Main Point #3: Now I you see without a doubt a good society stands on the
quality of parenting our children receive, lets see how you can play your part.
Main Point #3: If you would convince a man that he does wrong, do right. But do not care to
convince him. Men will believe what they see. Let them see. Henry Thoreau
Sub Point #1: The first and most important step needed for change to happen is the step you
need to take. Sitting around and hoping things would change would not help the children who
suffer every day by the hands of persons they should be able to trust.
Conclusion: In essence, you need to make a decision to be a good parent, get trained! Be a
protector of children whether they are related to you or a stranger to you. Take a stand against
abuse of children be ready to support issued regulations even if they are to issue a license to
parents.
Summary: I have explained the adverse effects on children in homes with parents unfit to care
for them and shown you how these effects affect the society as well and I know you are now
convinced that you should support initiatives to improve the care that our children.
Tie back to audience: Little Samara could have been your cousin, your niece, the child living
down the street. She could have become your doctor, your nurse, the lady who sells for you at
the bakery. Instead she was deprived and scared by her unfit parents, scars that will remain with
her for the rest of her life.
Concluding memorable remark: We must take a stand! Dont let another child be a part of the
statistics. You can be the difference! Support the cause, even if it means licenses for parenting.
Thank you.

Speech Rough Outline
Salutation
Good Afternoon Everyone. I am Nazinga Smith and I am going to convince you that issuing a
license for parents is without a doubt necessary.
Introduction:
(Pause for ten seconds). Ten seconds has just passed, according to statistics from Childhlep.org a
child abuse case is reported every ten seconds. Through out this speech approximately twenty-
four child abuse cases will be reported. Statistics from the American Humane Association states
that 68.3 % of these reports or 15 of those cases would be for children being neglected by their
parents. This is eight year old Samara she is the second of three children born to parents of age
20 and 36. Samaras parents constantly neglected her and her siblings, emotionally and
physically abuse them for things like asking too much questions. Samara received this injury,
from her father, with boiling water, because she tried to tell some one her parents were hurting
her.
This is just one of the countless stories of children suffering from abuse by parents who are unfit
to care for another human being. This brings about so many questions; should children continue
to suffer everyday because their parents are unable to care for another person? Can the quality of
parenting even improve? Should more steps be taken to ensure protection of the future of our
society? Should parents be licensed? Today, I would show you that without a doubt steps must
be taken to ensure that the quality of parenting improve, even if it means issuing license to
parents. : Firstly I would explain the adverse effects on children in homes with parents unfit to
care for them. Secondly I would show you how these effects affect the society and finally I
would state what you can do to improve the care that children receive from their parents.
Body: I am pretty sure we have all experienced that moment when we see a parent
disciplining their child in public and we turned a blind eye. Now I am not talking about the
necessary caution or spanking or the eye some of us know all too well that our parents give when
we act out of hand as they say. I am talking about brutally abusing a child, physically or
verbally a child to the point where you fear for the childs life but you turn a blind eye claiming
its not your business. A lot of times we turn a blind eye to children whose parents cannot care
for them but these children are affected gravely.
According to statistics from Childhlep.org; In at least one study, about 80% of 21 year olds that
were abused as children met criteria for at least one psychological disorder. On the website
Helpguide.org in an article on Child abuse and Neglect children suffer from negative effects
such as lack of trust and relationship difficulties, core feelings of being worthless or damaged
and some have trouble with even controlling their emotions
Now it is not only is the child affected, lets see how these affect the society that you and I live in.
It can be observed that large number children who suffer from abuse from their parents can
become adults who are just menaces to society. First this chance for increase in psychological
disorders can only spell trouble. And with child abuse statistics rising each year, this can only get
worse. If we dont take a stand now continued pressure would increase on the essential services
such Law enforcement and medical services that you and I need. And too add with all that
happen there would be increases worry for your personal safety.
Now you see without a doubt a good society stands on the quality of parenting our children
receive, lets see how important it is for you to play your part. Henry Thoreau once said If you
would convince a man that he does wrong, do right. But do not care to convince him. Men will
believe what they see. Let them see. This is so applicable for the first and most important step
needed for change to happen is the step you need to take. Sitting around and hoping things would
change would not help the children who suffer every day by the hands of persons they should be
able to trust.
Conclusion: In essence, you need to make a decision to be a good parent, get trained! Be a
protector of children whether they are related to you or a stranger to you. Take a stand against
abuse of children be ready to support issued regulations even if they are to issue a license to
parents.
