Teaching consumers the ABC of shopping for 8 years ago
CHALLENGE
Fernando Caballero: Hi, Im Fernando Caballero, Vice President of Grey Peru.
Diana Mandujano: Im Diana Mandujano, Account Director for all our brands at Grey Peru. Ive been working on this P&G project for 8 years ago.
Miguel Rodriguez: Im Miguel Rodriguez, General Creative Director of Grey Peru.
FC: It could be really unusual to imagine a market where low income consumers need basic information about how to use products which most of us take for granted. But thats our LIC situation. This story is about how we developed 8 years ago an educational campaign driving both, category and P&G brand growth; and that has given us across these years many satisfactions.
DM: The challenge was to find a single program that could drive growth across all P&G categories and without having huge resources for production. The team realized that theres no point selling sophisticated brand benefits to low income consumers when they arent yet even at the stage of knowing how products work or how to use them. For example, they bought very small sizes, even individual sachets, because of their low daily budget and that they didnt understand larger sizes can save money. Nor did they know how to use products properly thus wasting their products, money and time.
What was needed was a way of connecting with the audience in a familiar, non-condescending and yet authoritative way, so that basic category education messages could be delivered.
The challenge was to find a single program that could drive category and P&G brand growth, while educating our LIC.
IDEA
MR: The communications idea was to put education rather than the brand at the forefront of a P&G-produced series of infomercials. Fronted by a friendly Muppet-like shop-keeper, Don Pepe could represent the close relationship most low income consumers have with their local retailer. In each episode a different consumer pops into Don Pepes shop and is always given helpful tips, delivered with warm humour in colloquial language.
SOLUTION
DM: Don Pepe only stocks P&G products, so although no actual brands are mentioned the source of the good, money-saving advice and product usage tips is visually clear, positioning P&G as a category leader with trusted brands always there to help you rather than just sell you things. RESULTS
FC: This format has been running successfully for 8 years, in which time, Don Pepe has become a familiar and much loved national personality, both for High Frequency Stores owners and potential mass consumer. There have been great results across all brands starting initially with detergents, where Ace big sizes share grew from 0.8% to 2% (+150%). Since then, + 48% has happened on Head & Shoulders, +18% on Pampers and + 14% on Pantene (Bottle vs. sachet). The team now continues developing episodes as support to P&G brand campaigns, timing specific product points to support individual brands.
DM: Dont forget to mention that it also has given us many satisfactions across this years, winning Gold Effie Awards in 2001, an inside P&G Awards XXXXXX and in the last Team P&G Awards, a bronze in the category of Best Innovation Thinking.
