Sampling Techniques in Music Production

Track 1 samples the opening of London Grammar's "Nightcall" and James Brown's "Funky Drummer" drums. Effects were added to manipulate the samples throughout the track to add variety. Track 2 samples Lorde's "Ribs" vocals and Cameo's "Word Up" drums. Filters and tremolo helped add an atmospheric feel, while EQ addressed muddiness in the mix. Track 3 samples Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech, London Grammar's "Wasting My Young Years", and Massive Attack's "Teardrop" drums. Effects like reverb were used to make the speech sound open and fit together experimental elements from different sources.

Track 1- Nightcall-Funky Drummer Samples Track

For my First track i wanted to make something more upbeat and edgy so i decided to
take inspiration from my favourite band London Grammar. I did this by sampling the
first few seconds from their hit song Nightcall. I ran It through the EXS24 and added
some compression, tremolo and an amp designer as well as some other effects to
make it sound different to the original then I decided to duplicate the EXS24 instrument
so that I had multiple versions of that one sample to work with. After I had arranged the
first sample i then decided to sample the drums off of a very well known song called
Funky Drummer by James Brown. This sample is used so much and it has a history
of being taken and used in many tracks. I Heard this sample in the song Heaven by
emeli sande. So I sampled the drums and decided to experiment with some delays and
reverb to get that big room feel to the track. I then wrote a chord pattern and added
build ups were appropriate from the drum sample talked about earlier. I tried to
manipulate the samples all the way throughout the track so that it would add variety.
Finally I structured the song and began to add EQ and other tools were necessary.

Track 2- Cameo and Lorde Samples Track

After completing the first track I thought that I should vary up the genre and go for something more
chilled. So I began to look for a sample, I took along while to find a
sample that I wanted but in the end I took a part of Lordes song Ribs I
began to then make variations of the sample that I had so that I could
begin to manipulate it in the EXS24. Once I had done that I remembered
how I used an old drum sample in the last track. It turned out well so I
thought I would do it again but this time I used the song Word Up by
cameo. This worked out extremely well as then I began to edit it and add
reverb and stereo delays to get an almost more atmospheric track.
Tremolo and the use of the EXS24 really helped me with this track as it
added a certain element that it missed when I was just using the Lorde
Sample. After That I automated the track and used filters to buildup the
track. EQ on this track proved to be a bit tricky however as the drums
originally overpowered the mix so I had to lessen the lower frequencies
so that it would make the track less muddy and more clear.

Track 3- Massive Attack, London Grammar and Martin Luther King

For My last piece I wanted to make something a little more experimental
and different. I had an idea to take vocals or a speech and use it in one
of my tracks. So I Decided to use Martin Luther Kings I have a Dream
speech and I worked around that. I Then researched into a sample that
would fit to the speech. I eventually used a short sample from London
Grammars song Wasting my young years. I then began to change it with the EXS24
and swell as edit it so that it looped and went with the the speech. After that I tried to
make a drum beat that would somewhat fit however i had a bit of a struggle finding
one that would fit the overall feel of the song. So I did a bit of research and came up
with a solution. I sampled the drums from Massive Attacks Teardrop and automated
them with filters so that they would fit into the mix. I then began to add effects such as
Reverb to the speech to make it sound much more open.
