ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

Dear Reader,
Infrastructure developments.
After a hiccup in which the first couple of pours were grey concrete, this
has been rectified and the shared bike/walking path is going ahead with the
tan colour we expected along the foreshore. At the time of writing
approximately 1/3 of the area between Port Willunga and Snapper Point is
laid.
Despite many peoples best efforts, the new Telstra tower at Snapper Point
is now in place.
We also have pipe work in place for our long awaited Snapper Point toilet.

Council Elections.
These are being held this month and those who attended our October
meeting had a chance to hear from twelve of the Wine Coast Ward
candidates. Two mayoral candidates were also present, and although
unplanned, they also took the opportunity offered to speak to us.
I believe candidates also addressed the recent community forum.

Traffic interruptions.
Many people have commented on how frustrating it is with the widespread
traffic interruptions due to prolific road and infrastructure works lately.
At least we know work is being done and hopefully we will reap the
benefits at its conclusion.

This issue.
You may note this months issue is considerably thinner. Weve had to
reduce the mag back to 40 pages due to advertising cancellations. I
apologise that some of our regular features are missing due to space
limitations.

ANZAC Centenary.
November is the month the first convoy of ships carrying AIF & New
Zealand Expeditionary Forces (NZEF) left Albany 100 years ago. These
later became the ANZACs. Merchant ships and three cruisers left and
joined two more ships at sea carrying troops from South Australia and
Western Australia along with a Japanese cruiser. They were all bound for
Egypt for training before many of them took part in the landing at
Gallipoli the following April.
This is a good opportunity to remember and be grateful to all the service
and lay personnel who have given the ultimate sacrifice or sacrificed their
physical and mental health to protect our freedom and way of life over the
years and their families. (My thanks to Bob Moore for lending me his copy
of Vetaffairs Spring 2014 in which this information was published.)

I hope you enjoy the issue.

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL

Willunga Uniting Church hosts its annual Christmas Tree
Festival on the first weekend in advent, November 29th &
30th. 10am to 4pm.
This annual community event is a showcase for creative
minds, either as a collective or as an individual submissions have been received for dozens of Christmas trees to
be displayed.
This year the festival delves into the past, present and
future as part of the Willunga 175 celebrations.
There will be many things to investigate for all ages, including workshops for the very popular advent wreaths.
Explore the kids trail, visit our community complex, indulge in a Devonshire tea and browse through the Christmas crafts and food stalls. Musicians will also entertain
with Christmas songs.
Enjoy a display of over 50 decorated trees and be part of
the peoples choice for your favourite Christmas tree.
Many groups delight in the communal activity of creating
a special tree, which is then used for their Christmas celebrations.
The Willunga Pre School always creates a standout
Christmas tree with little hands making a wonderful and
colourful entry.
Entrance to this inspirational display of Christmas trees is
still only $3, kids free.
Proceeds to Act for Peace and the Christmas Bowl Appeal and Uniting Church projects.
Bus tours by appointment, December 1st to 4th.

Green waste and cardboard / paper - Environmental

Protection Authority (EPA) legislation bans all councils
state wide from sending these materials to landfill.
As of 1 September 2012 computers and televisions will
also be part of this ban. Therefore these materials can no
longer be accepted as part of our hard waste collection.
The collection point is the Southern Waste Resource
Management on Bakewell Road Seaford Rise (the
Council dump off South Road N of the bridge).
There is no cost. All you need to do is take your Ewaste
to the appropriate tip and they will direct you to the
Ewaste section.
You leave your stuff near two containers and exit the tip
depositing the card they issue you with. This card will
take you off their computer.
This can be done any day of the week.

Fluorescent light tubes (this includes Compact

Fluorescent lights now widely being used to replace
incandescent globes) contain mercury.
If disposed of in landfill (through your garbage bin) this
can leach into the soil and water table with disastrous
results.
They should be disposed of properly through recycling.
Do not put them in your rubbish bin. Collection points
are available at Mitre 10 stores and the Willunga
Environment Centre.

CINEMALLUNGAS AGM
Local band Ripcord are ready to rock
Brothers Jacob & Jesse have spent months on the road
every year touring through outback locations with their
musician parents. Rebelling against the country music
surrounding them, their headphones were constantly filled
with songs from artists such as The Living End, Foo
Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Silverchair, Nirvana and
Rage Against the Machine.
Travelling, spending time in remote communities and
performing became normal and the freedom of thought
this allowed inspired Jacob to begin writing. 9 songs later
he took a breath, came back to Willunga and was ready to
start
Joining with their good mate Carl, the boys began pulling
Ripcord together two years ago. Now with their first full
year home, Ripcord have recorded their debut EP, 77.
Ripcord perform songs with passion, power and energy.
Thirteen year old Jesse belies his age and thunders on the
drums, Carl holds down the low end and Jacob covers the
rest, strong, exciting and melodic vocals and guitar.
Australia is screaming out for new young rock bands and
Ripcord are ready if you are.
Be part of discovering Ripcord at their EP Launch.
Saturday November 15th 2014.
Willunga Show Hall, Main Rd, Willunga. Doors from
7pm. Tickets $5, $10 with EP.

a great success.

In all 18 teams took part in this event to raise

money for the Cancer Council of SA.
Held on McLaren Vale oval on 11th and 12th October, teams had members carrying a baton around the
course constantly for the 19 hours of the event, including
overnight, to remind us that cancer never sleeps.

time of writing, $ 40,001 was raised to help support the
hostels provided for cancer sufferers from rural areas
who have to attend treatment in the city.

friends of the GKR karate club won the best banner prize
and raised a commendable $ 10,614.00.

CHRISTMAS CAROLS
IN ALDINGA BEACH
The excited squeal of happy children playing, the rustle of animals on hay, the whir of a good coffee being made, the smell of
sizzling sausages and the sweet melody of a community choir
practising their Christmas tunes. That's just some of the magical
sounds and smells that will greet you when you arrive at
Aldinga Bay Community Carols 10th Anniversary Celebrations
this December.
Put the 14th December 2014 in your diary and meet us at Symonds Reserve, Stewart Avenue, Aldinga Beach for FREE
Carnival activities running from 4 till 7pm. These will include a
new design jumping castle for the kids and a chance to ride a
Rainbow Ponies pony around
the event. You may like to get
your face painted, or try your
hand at one of the craft activities.
The carnival activities will be
complemented by a range of
stalls. Along with a variety of
hot and cold drinks, stalls will
sell exquisite cup-cakes, steaming coffee and of course no carnival is complete without a super sausage sizzle. You may also
like to purchase glow-sticks for the carols which will begin at
7:30pm.
As the sun sinks low over Aldinga Bay, set up your chairs or
picnic rug and settle in for an evening of entertainment. Be
touched by the items and join
with the community choir as
they lead us in some wellloved carols. This year, the
Aldinga Bay Community
Carols are pleased to welcome Etypejazz a classy five
piece act from SA who have
independently sold over
28,000 albums with their polished show filled with energy and
jazz. With Etypjazz we are also excited to welcome Tyndale
puppets as the guest artists. These are amazing children's performers that will entertain and enthral your kids with their energy and humour.
The organising committee would like to thank all the sponsors
who have supported this community event. In particular, they
wish to acknowledge their Gold Sponsors: Aldinga Central,
Aldinga Beach Community Bank Bendigo Bank and Home
Grain Bakery.

We officially open our newest school structure

which the students have built by hand
On Friday 7 November at 3.30pm the first Willunga Waldorf School teacher, Marita Huxholl, will visit
the school to open the brand new, hand built, mud brick,
chicken house.
As part of the Steiner/Waldorf Class 3 curriculum,
students study building.
The students spent 3 weeks looking at different
types of building techniques from Aboriginal shelters to
African Adobe shelters. In addition to this, the class
teacher, Andrew Banks, arranged for some trades people
to come and talk to the students including a carpenter and
designer. The students were then asked to design and create a model of a chicken house, taking into account materials, function, features and appearance. The teacher then
incorporated as many elements of the students designs
into one design.
After the school approved the proposal, the students spent three weeks building the chicken house that
included nearly 400 bricks they have been making by
hand since the beginning of the year.
The chickens will be placed in their new home as
part of the official opening ceremony.
Janet Molloy, Principal says Were excited to
open our newest building what a triumph for the students, parents and teacher who have worked together so
beautifully to create a new home for our chickens.
Class 3 student, Katja McCumiskey, was excited to
talk about the building project. Katja said We made the
bricks by hand! We got wooden squares then we mixed
20 clay, 10 sand and 5 straw, put this into the moulds and
let them dry. Its quite a big chicken house for 4 hens and
the run is very big. When we put the hens in, thats going
to be good and other people have said that its going to be
like a hotel for them!

So, circle Sunday 14th December on your calendars and join us

this year for this community event created with you in mind. It
falls 'smack-bang' in the middle of the busiest month of the year
and is a great opportunity for a
change of pace.

THE FLYING FINN

News from the Aldinga Bay Bowling Club.

Showing more than just a glimpse of talent, local MP
Chris Picton joined members of Aldinga Bay Bowling
Club at the Official Opening of its 2014 -15 bowling season recently.
Chris
rolled
down the
first bowl
of the
season
after
eldest
club
member
Doug
Johnsson
rolled the jack. Members then all joined in to enjoy a
friendly fours competition followed by a delicious afternoon tea.
Selectors were unsuccessful though in their attempts to
sign Chris up for this years Pennant team!
Pennant Competitions are held at the Club on Thursdays
and Saturdays with both men and women bowlers
welcome.
Budding young bowlers from the Southern Vales Christian College recently took part in a come try bowls
programme conducted by Aldinga Bay Bowling Club,
with President John Clissitt providing valuable
introductory coaching. The year 12 SACE Stage 2
Physical Education students had approximately ten sessions that formed part of their terms sports curriculum.
Dean Hawkins from the College said that the moderator
who assessed the progress of the student bowlers was
impressed with the way the young bowlers gained a good
knowledge of the game and in particular how they
understood some of the technical aspects.
It is envisaged by Aldinga Bay Bowling Club that the
development of junior bowlers will be ongoing during
the bowling season this year, with other local schools
and community groups expressing keen interest.
Thirty senior students from Tatachilla Lutheran College
have recently commenced a seven week come try
bowls programme and a special needs group from Onkaparinga Council has also recently visited ABBC for a
roll-up.
Very popular Nightowls bowling commenced in midOctober with 64 keen bowlers competing in two
divisions - and for people whod like to try lawn bowls,
Twilight Bowls commencing from 6pm every
Wednesday evening provides a friendly social
opportunity to Get OnThe Green!
Contact the Aldinga Bay Bowling Club on 85576467
or call President John on 0417820596 for more
details.

Initially finding success in the aero-modelling field

(Australian high flying champion two consecutive years)
Finn decided to try his wings in the bikey scene. He was
part of the very early club life in South Australia.
He was big, strong and tough - but not indestructible. And
along came a guard rail that got in the way of this drunkas-a-skunk rider on his precious Kawasaki 900; not far
from 'devil's elbow'. Finn actually died but was resuscitated and finally restored to a useful life. Looking back on
it he says, 'I realised my life had been hanging on the
edge of eternity with no means of saving myself - lost
without God!' But the accident didn't change him.
'Weazel', tough as an ox, totally undisciplined, and able to
beat up six people at one time, threw in his patch saying
to Finn, 'I can't continue because I've found Jesus Christ
as my Saviour'. Finn thought he'd gone around the twist;
but then his own brother (not a bikey) and totally opposite
to Weazel in disposition - said, 'I'm here to tell you specifically, "Jesus is real"'. Finn said whilst this rocked him,
it still didn't change him.
But unable to believe in evolution, he one day got to his
knees at home and said, 'I must know the truth - if You
are real it changes everything.' He said, 'As dero as I was
I believed God probably existed, but hadn't understood.'
The events that followed convinced him, and when he
publically gave his life to Christ in a church, he says the
teeth-breaking level of pain from the accident - which
would cause him to writhe on the ground - suddenly decreased. And his sewer-mouth instantly disappeared.
Now Finn is a gentle pioneering pastor with a fledgling
home church in Mount Compass. Phone 0468 381 884

Compliments of Willunga Veterinary Services

You wouldnt even know if your cat had aids (FIV)!

What is FIV (Feline Immuno-deficiency virus)? Think HIV
for humans, but for cats! (Humans cannot contract FIV).
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is a cat-only virus
that causes a suppression of their immune system. IT CAN
BE FATAL and once a cat has contracted the virus, it has it
for life (the virus lives in the blood of an infected cat and is
carried in its system throughout life).
The sneaky part about FIV is that cats infected with the
virus can actually remain healthy for a number of years
without showing any signs! Just like walking down the
street can you tell who has HIV and who doesnt?
Some of the symptoms that can show up include a fever,
loss of appetite, diarrhoea, lethargy, and swollen lymph
nodes. Cats can lose weight, have a poor coat, suffer from
dental disease or other sores in their mouth and as
mentioned, can develop chronic infections or cancer.
BETWEEN 14-29% OF CATS IN AUSTRALIA TEST
POSITIVE TO THIS VIRAL DISEASE.
How is the virus transmitted? Infected cats have high
concentrations of virus in their saliva and the most
common route of infection is via catfight wounds.
Can FIV be treated? At present there is no specific
treatment for cats infected with FIV. That is why
understanding the disease and preventing it with
vaccinations is so important.
Which cats are at risk? Any cat that spends time outside is
at risk. Most outdoor cats will at some stage be involved in
a fight with other cats and therefore be at risk of being
infected. The more they fight, the greater the chance of
contracting FIV
How is FIV detected? A simple in-clinic blood test will
detect FIV infection in most infected cats. On occasion a
laboratory test (called a PCR test) may be required to
confirm a diagnosis.
Can FIV be prevented? FIV vaccination prevents viral
infection. It is as important as the cat flu vaccine in some
areas it is THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE!
In the Aldinga area, we consider this to be a high-risk
virus and any cat that spends time outside should be
vaccinated. We regularly see cats with FIV.

Family Mental Health Support Services (FMHSS)

38 Beach Rd, Christies Beach SA 5165
Ph (08) 8202 5200

Welcome to our fourth in a five part series giving tips on

how we can support our community to better mental
health!
Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (formally known as self
harming)...
Self-injury is not a mental illness in itself, but is usually a
symptom of either a mental illness or serious psychological
distress which needs treatment. People who harm themselves
often have a desire to escape from unbearable anguish in their
life, or to gain relief from tension or distress. In some cases, it
may be a cry for help.
What to look for?
You may notice physical evidence of self-injury, which can
include:
cutting, scratching, tearing or pinching skin
banging or punching objects or self to the point of bruising or
bleeding
interfering with the healing of wounds
burning skin with cigarettes, matches, lighters, spray cans
or hot water
compulsively pulling out large amounts of hair.
Next steps...
If youre deliberately injuring yourself, its vital that you speak
to a trusted adult or to your GP immediately.
If you suspect someone you care about is injuring themselves,
you may choose to calmly discuss it with them. Let them know
that you have noticed their injuries and ask if they would like
to discuss it with you. You should always encourage a person
who is deliberately injuring themselves to speak to a GP or
trusted adult.
If youre unsure of how to respond to your friends answers,
seek advice from a trusted adult beforehand.

If you witness someone injuring themselves, you may need

to call 000 to request emergency assistance if the injury
appears to be life-threatening. Ask your friend if there is
anything you can do to help reduce their distress, and
encourage them to speak to a trusted adult or GP immediately.
If you suspect someone has taken an overdose of
medication or consumed poison, call 000 immediately for
an ambulance.

If you would like to use our service and talk about your
circumstances, call us on 8202 5200 to make a time to
meet with one of our team members.
