Welcome

RadPuff is a PC-based simulation software for projecting dose dispersion of Radiological

Dispersal Device (RDD), commonly known as Dirty Bomb. Gauss puff model is used for
calculating the thyroid and whole body dose according to varying meteorological conditions.
The software is developed by Micro-Simulation Technology of U.S.A.
When running Setup to install, you may encounter installation failed due to iertutil.dll was
not found error. It is actually harmless, just click OK. You may also see -- ieframe.dll was
not registered. Click Ignore and you should get the success signal.
After initiating RadPuff the banner appears for a few seconds, it is followed by selection of
radiological source:

The default source is from one typical PWR spent fuel assembly offloaded 5 years after
shutdown to be released evenly in 1000 seconds time period. For an explosive devise you
can change the time period much shorter for a strong puff release. You may click the upper

right corner Next arrow in Select Set for other sources, e.g. a typical BWR spent fuel
assembly, or single isotope Co-60, I-131, Kr-87, Pu-238, etc. Each individual isotopes
radioactivity is default to 1 Curie. You can change it to any value and save it as you wish.
Clicking Close will set your total radiological release source as stated.

Next the program main mimic will show up.

User can choose the map from old collections or using Google Map. Clicking the button will
open up the subdirectory \Maps with a list of bitmap files. Make sure NOT to click those with
xxx.Scale.bmp extension. Those are the scale meter for measuring the range of
corresponding map. Once the picture is shown, please use a ruler to gauge the range of the x
and y range (for the square map they are the same) by referencing the scale and type it in the
Range box. You can choose either km for kilometer or Mi for miles. This is important for
the dispersion calculation to know the scale of the map.
1. If you need a new map, click that button will automatically enter into Google Map. Your
computer should be connected to the Internet and its firewall allows this access. You can
then enter either the street address or latitude/longitude. Zoom and center your RDD at
the center and click the left borderline arrow to remove the left pane information. Make
sure the miles/kilometers/feet/meter scale visible in the lower left corner. This is

important since RadPuff will cut-and-paste the scale icon by our main mimic after
downloading. Then you should type in the range in miles or kilometers and submit. The
range should be less than 20 miles since dirty bombs are known for affecting only close
neighborhood area.
Click the upper right square to maximize the window display and the Runner icon to
start the run. Execution speed default is real-time or the same as the clock time.
Type in Wind Speed, direction (0 is blowing to east) and Pasquill stability class (A to F).
A is most unstable.
Click OK to start dose assessment.
Click the number 1 right to the bottom status bars atom icon for fast time. Maximum
speed is 16 times faster than real-time. So you can project the dose distribution well
ahead actual adversity.

6. Soon a colored plume appears indicating the biological effect to human thyroid and total
effective dose equivalent (TEDE), in rate or timely integrated according your selection in
the left panel.
7. Change the wind speed and/or direction as you wish during the course. Watch the
plume shift.
8. Click anywhere in the plume you will see the dose rate or integrated dose will be digitally
displayed in the left panel. Note only iodine sources have thyroid dose.

At the end of a run, you will be prompted to the question Do you want to save a transient
report? Click yes and give it the text file a name, you can use Notepad to view the report:
