INTRODUCTION TO FEM
Syllabus:
Basic concepts, historical back ground, application of FEM, general
description, comparison of FEM with other methods, Variational approach,
Galerkin Methods. Co-ordinates, basic element shapes, interpolation function,
Virtual energy principle, Rayleigh- Ritz method, properties of stiffness matrix,
treatment of boundary conditions, solution of system of equations, Shape
functions and characteristics. Basic equations of elasticity & Strain
Displacement relations.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of this unit student can understand
The importance of FINITE ELEMENT AND MODELLING METHODS in the working life of an engineer.
Finite Element Method for analyzing many engineering problems.
To Know the Structural area problems like stress analysis i.e., components, load, constraints, deformation,
strain, stress.
To Know the Structural area problems like Buckling and Vibration analysis.
To Know the Non Structural area problems like Heat transfer, Fluid flow and Distribution of electric or
magnetic potential.
Engineering applications of the Finite Element Method.
Know equilibrium problems like static analysis of aircraft wings, fuselages, fins, rockets, spacecraft and
missile structures.
Know the Stiffness, flexibility, Inertia, damping and stability characteristics of an element.
Obtain Degree of freedom.
