Lesson Analysis and Reflection
For my first videotaped lesson and reflection I conducted a reading lesson. This
lesson was on their current story, The Astronaut and the Onion. In this lesson there were
three learning goals; students will use comprehension skills to respond to questions
related to the text, students will be able to complete a character traits chart by using
information found within the text, students will be able to use the think-pair-share
strategy. After watching the video and reviewing the in class work I believe that the
students met the learning goals. First off I provided them with in-class questions on the
SmartBoard as well as independent questions. These questions required them to use
comprehension skills and higher order thinking. The independent questions also held
them accountable to go back to certain pages within the text to find the answer. The third
learning goal was also accomplished through the SmartBoard guided reading questions.
When I had the students answer these questions I used the think-pair-share strategy. This
was the first time that many of these students had used this strategy so I was given the
chance to explain it to them before they had the chance to try it out. The second goal was
also met. As a class, students completed a character traits chart for the two main
characters, Gloria and Dr. Street. While reading the story we would pause at different
points and discuss character traits and fill in the chart. Student work or evidence to show
that these goals have been met will be included in this paper.
Two weeks ago my supervisor came to observe my lesson. He provided me with
feedback to use for future lessons. I was sure to begin using his feedback immediately.

One thing he suggested was that I should write the objectives on the board. When he
came to observe me I just stated the objectives at the beginning of class. He said that it
would be beneficial for the students to hear the objectives as well as to see them. So the
next day I began writing the learning objectives on the board. Within my video I will
refer to the writing on the board and I will go over the objectives at the beginning of
class. Another thing he suggested was that I should add in more independent work. Prior
to his feedback I had not noticed that I was depending more on whole class and small
group work. In my videotaped lesson I was sure to include whole class and small group
work while also adding in more independent work. I added in a trifold that had five
questions about the story. The students were asked to refer to pages within their text to
help them answer the questions.
While I was writing and teaching this lesson I was thinking about Danielsons
Framework. I wanted to make sure that I was reaching each domain. Domain 1 involves
planning and preparation and I believe there are a few ways that I reached this domain.
First off I was able to demonstrate my knowledge of content and resources by visiting
different content related websites to obtain information and questions to use in class, as
well as a trifold that was used for independent assessment. I also showed that I am able to
set instructional outcomes and write a coherent lesson. I showed this when I wrote the
objectives on the board. I also showed this when I wrote a lesson that was aligned with
the standards for 4th grade and followed a sequence that involved coherence.
The second domain involves the classroom environment. I also reached this
domain in a few different ways. From day one of school I was sure to create an
environment of respect and rapport. I believe this is evident in my video. I had positive

interactions with my students and my students had positive interactions with each other
when they were working together for their think-pair-share activity. Also in the video it
was evident that I have worked on established a culture for learning. My students were
engaged throughout the lesson and actively participating. I also believe I showed my
management of classroom procedures when my students and I effectively used our
classroom time.
Domain 3 of Danielsons framework involves instructional delivery. First off I
showed that I communicate with my students. I showed this when I clearly explained to
the students the purpose of the days lesson and the assignments that would be
completed. I engaged my students in learning by giving them the chance to read their
story. I also provided them with in-class activities that allowed them to work together and
on their own. I used assessment in class when I provided my students with a trifold to
complete independently.
The last domain involves professional responsibilities. I believe I have
accomplished this domain but it may not be particularly evident within this lesson. I do
keep an accurate record of grades. I have a grade book that I write grades as well as a
website that parents can visit to check grades and I also keep all student tests file. Thus
far, I have not had a lot of opportunities to communicate with parents I have met a few
within the school and at a porting event but that is the only contact I have had with them.
In two weeks, at the end of the quarter, I will have the chance to meet parents at parentteacher conferences. Lastly I believe I show professionalism everyday. I am always on
time, I dress appropriately and I am positive and helpful to my students.

Over the last few years I have thought a lot about how I want to teach and run my
classroom. In thinking about my future classroom I have thought a lot about my personal
teaching goals. I want to ignite a passion for learning in my students and I can
accomplish this by reaching my own goals. One personal goal I have is to inspire my
students. I plan on doing this by taking pride in my accomplishments and helping my
students realize their potential. I can inspire my students by believing in their abilities and
by providing them with support. A second goal I have is to make sure I always remain up
to date with new research and innovative methods. I can do this by attending webinars,
workshops, conferences, etc. A third goal I have for myself and my teaching is to
recognize that people make mistakes. I have to learn that I will make mistakes but I can
learn from these mistakes. I should not dwell on them but take them as a chance to
flourish and grow.
