Bye, bye objective; Hello results

Toss out that pass Objective section of yesterday and replace it with a well-branded,
focused statement that gives the reader a clear message about who you are in less
than 5 words. Here are a few examples: Consumer Marketing Executive
Leadership Summary or Financial Executive Leadership Summary or Technical
Writer Professional Summary

Are Keywords from job opening, occupation, or field

incorporated into your rsum? If the job asks for teamwork skills,
you have clearly shown you have developed your teamwork skills
somewhere in your rsum, perhaps in a profile (summary of skills),
job, or campus involvement. Review keyword guides for sections
relevant to your area. Use job descriptions or ads to be sure you are
hitting as many of these as possible.

Does your education section quickly identify your background?

Clearly identifies your degree, major and minor, when you will
graduate, and where you went to school.
Lists relevant coursework (in a logical order) (unless work
experience or campus involvement is more impressive).
Discusses GPA, hours worked, or percent financed as is relevant
to your situation.
Highlights major course activities if your work experience section is
weak or if you need filler (e.g.. Conducted marketing research project
for the City of Maryville with a group of 3 students).

Do your Work and Leadership Experience sections make the

best of the experience you have to offer?
Descriptions clearly identify what you did at a position (Google a
job description for your position for help with wording)
Action verbs are used to describe all positions; you have varied
the action verbs used, you have avoided using helped or assisted.
Internships are clearly labeled.

Irrelevant, long-ago jobs are eliminated or grouped together in a

Work History or Other Work Experience section.
All jobs have a title, organization, location, and dates listed.
Use present tense for present situations and past tense for past
jobs and experiences.
Use active descriptions Managed and avoid passive
constructions such as was responsible for managing.
You have eliminated statements such as Duties included.

Have you included at least one Accomplishment or Transferable

Skill for each position?
Emphasis is on skills & accomplishments, not just responsibilities
(Skill ex: Obtained the ability to handle pressure and work in a team) .
(Accomplishment ex: Consistently received positive evaluations from
superiors and coworkers).

Have you used concrete examples whenever possible?

Quantifyuse numbers, percentages, or dollar amounts (Ex.
Organized events for groups of 2030).
Qualify any statement you can (eg. Trusted by Academic Dean to

uphold confidentiality).
Is your rsum completely error free?
Have you included enough words? (Ex. Check your word count and
compare it to samples similar to yours).
Did you run it through grammar and spell check?
Have you read it out loud word by word?
Have you asked a friend and professional to review the document?

Does your rsum look highly professional?

Overall appearance makes an excellent first impression (passes the
12 inch test).- See On the Edge Rsums for the latest trends

Name and contact information is formatted in a manner so that your

name is prominent and the top looks attractive..
Professional E-mail address is included without hyperlink.
At least 2 fonts were used in the documentFont type and size is
easy to read
My favorite is Times New Roman for Headings (12 or 13) & Calibri (10
or 10.5).
All bullets and lines are highly professional (Dont use * or as a
bullet).
Section headings clearly separate sections and identify the material in
their section; section headings and words that follow are separated with
adequate white space.
Formatting within sections is uniform and consistent (spacing, font
size, bullets, slashes, numbers, dates, punctuation).
Layout on the page utilizes paper space appropriately (not too much
or too little white space).
You only have one space after periods
Margins on sides are equal (fold the paper in half to test this you
can go down to .6 if needed).
Underlining, italics, and bolding are appropriately used.
Key information is easy to find (toward the top 1/3 of resume).
Professional 24 lb. bond 100% cotton white or off-white rsum paper
and laser printing are used.
No typosspelling and grammar are perfect.
No use of I, me:, or my; minimized use of articles (a, an, the).
Length appropriate for your level of education and experience (usually
one page).
Critical information is listed at the beginning with less important
details listed toward the bottom.
Most college students sections will follow this order: Profile or
Summary, Education, Work Experience, Leadership or Organizations,
Honors/Achievements (You may not have ALL of these sections).

Consider adding your portfolio address.
