A Filipino-American moves to Manila on a quest for one hundred dates. But things goes awry when something tracks to
claim him.

The polished surface of brass reflected the image of a man. An old mirror hung on the wall in a relic house tucked
in the belly of the old city. Bits of faint binary light filled the veranda as the iphone clock ticked closer to midnight GMT
800 Manila time.
If I take a shot of this vile concoction I will finally see her
A cat perched on the wall yawns, oblivious that I have the blood of its kin on my hand. Tonight I invoke the dark
magic of my mother country. Tonight I will call upon the spawns of another world to gaze into the eyes of the fairest and
wealthiest of beauty.
Trembling hands steadied the shot glass.
Encanto, motherfucker. Bottoms up.
The taste was foul, as rabid as they come. But the seven-up after shot I prepared took the nastiness away. Always
prepared, always rational. This is the way of men.
And it is not the way of men to tremble in fear in the midst of dark arts and the supernatural - this I told myself.
But the doa of the casa said drinking a black cats blood at this precise time would cure it. I almost vomited at the
thought. But it didnt matter, for it would save her. I clutched the wooden amulet that hung around my neck.
There was a large, forceful hissing sound before the cat darted to darkness.
HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
When the brass reflection touched my eye. I saw her. Well, not her, but I saw her eyes.
Green eyes.. it cant be!
*** BOSTON LOGAN INTERNATIONAL: 6 months ago***
Everything was pointing me this way. Towards the international terminal to my motherland. I admit, they called
me crazy. I already had a good life in the USA. Everything was in place, everything was prepared. I had a decent 401k a
decent job amidst the technology driven sphere of innovators the birthplace of missiles and facebook. In this land, the
rational prevails.
Why then am I taking a one trip to the ends of the earth?
Coming back to the motherland was a travesty for my family. We were all upwardly mobile in the new land of
America. You do not simply leave. But Ive lost something precious in this land.
Bro you think you can find me Filipina woman in Manila?

Yeah, man. But I dont think they date Indians.

Whats wrong with Indians?
Nothing, really. Except the odor part. Im joking with you bro. I hunched over to give my housemate Indian
engineer a hug. And besides you have a white girl anyways.. isnt that what youve always wanted? Now you have the
American dream.
But you also a whi--- he said before contracting his statement. Sorry, about Lesley man
Dont sweat it. I closed my notebook shut. My black book: where I planned to journal each experience.
So are you really going to do it?
Yeah
One hundred Filipina Dates?
Haha. Yeah
You are one crazy flip!
I nodded. The exit sign hung ominously. I clutched the blue passport stamped with an eagle.
Before you go here is something from my culture. My Indian roommate turned to give me a wooden item, Its
an amulet to protect you from bad karma. Dont you philliiiipinnos believe in Karma?
They do. But I dont. Ive lost my faith.
Who doesnt? Thanks! I said, clutching the wooden amulet.
**Yesterday**
She looked at me with curious eyes. I had seen this many times. The batting of her eye-lashes. The crossing of her
legs. The slight tilt of her chin towards me.
Do you like the sisig? she asks, a lawyer from the Palace. A highly educated rich girl whose driver waited for
her outside of this empty restaurant.
The trivialities of our conversation are lost to me. My dating life had been drenched in gasoline by okcupid and
sparked by tinder. I was growing bored of the empty distraction of these dates, but still did not find what I was looking
for.
But I persisted. Now, I run on auto-pilot. A collection of armed routines that I have learned in the dating market
of the western world which had increased in potency as a Fil-Am in the motherland.
I moved closer to touch her thighs and noticed the pulsing of her vein on the side of neck. Like a viper, I swayed
back and forth waiting to pounce on her lips. I smiled as the crackling of thunder marked the start of a dance.
*CRACKLE!* *BOOM!*
Her breathing turned deep. Shes not used to this type of aggression. The western aggression.
I did not relent. I went for the kiss. But she pulls away.
Ok fine. Ive played this before.
I grabbed the base of her neck, holding her, and locking her in place. When a tongue excitedly meets me, I had all
the encouragement that I needed, our tongues lathered in a hot, slippery embrace.
The rain intensified, drumming the rooftop, and masking the sound of smacking lips.
Brad my date whimpered before clutching my arm to take even more of me.

Locked and loaded. Another for the list. Number 79..

The pouring rain turned furious as I slowly edged my hand upwards her waist. But the violent cracking of thunder
had made me lose my zen. It was as if I heard a voice.
*CRACKLE!* *BOOM!*
It was a presence that I felt. A pair of sinister eyes that locked me from behind. My alpha instinct kicked in. There
was danger. I released my kiss on the lawyer-girl.
*CRACKLE!* *BOOM!*
In front of the restaurant stood a girl. She was completely drenched. Her hair like vines reminded me of the
movie, the grudge. Her white clothing clung to her skin revealing the silhouette of a young body.
This drenched girl stood, unmoving. Her eyes were vaporous. Her pearly white skin clanged with the darkened
patches encircling her eyes.
SINO YAN? the lawyer demanded.
I squinted my eyes to get a better look.
I think I know her
DO YOU KNOW HER? the lawyer demanded.
Busted?
I think I do, my attention finally focused to the girl in front of me. Finally, something exciting was happening to
my life.
A flicker of her undead-looking pupil fixated on both of us.
*CRACKLE!* *BOOM!*
I know her..
SINO KA? GUARD! PAKI- before the lawyer could finish her command, she was interrupted by a large
hissing sound.
HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
The lawyer next to me must have felt something, as her eyes widened but the rest of her body froze. Maybe it was
the feeling of being in the presence that falls outside the realm of her profession - for all the laws of man means nothing to
the eternal.
Now, every part of me had been invigorated. I was attuned to the moment. The rush of excitement flowed from
my veins. I felt alive.
Brad ummm the lawyer said adjusting her mini-skirt, I have to go. Ill call you nalang.
I paid no attention to my date. I was deeply absorbed by the haunting appearance of the girl. I did not even notice
that my date had left.
There was emptiness in the way the girl stared deeply at me. I leaned closer, scratching my chin. In the depth of
her eyes, there were shifting colors. From the black of her eyes came green.
HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
*CRACKLE!* *BOOM!*
Encanto, motherfucker.
