Analysis of the Problem

9:30 a.m. What kind of cereal should I have this morning? 12:45 p.m. Is it lunch time
yet? Im starving. For most of us these food complaints are silly exaggerations, and sadly, for
some children in the Orlando area, these are the facts of life. It goes without saying that global
hunger is an issue, but what also commonly goes without saying is how you can help resolve that
global issue. Feeding Children Everywhere a non-profit organization allows students, families,
and friends to come together and assemble healthy meals for hungry children in an event called
Pack to Attack Hunger.
Pack to Attack Hunger is an adrenaline filled event hosted by the Panhellenic Council
at the University of Central Florida to help fight world hunger. On November 9, 2014 University
of Central Florida students, friends, and families will have the unique opportunity to package
200,000 meals that will be distributed to starving children in the Orlando community.
Pack to Attack Hunger allows people to make a tangible difference and realize the little
amount of effort it takes to feed those who cant feed themselves. Although we live in the United
States, one of the wealthiest nations in the world, 14.5 percent of U.S. households struggle to put
food on the table. The Unites States has enough resources and power to end hunger and provide
food to American citizens.
Feeding Children Everywhere aims to feed starving children across the world.
Unfortunately, more than one in five children are at risk of hunger. In Florida alone, there is a
14.1 percent chance an individual will go hungry. According to the United States Department of
Agriculture, of the children who receive free or reducedprice lunch each school day, less than
half receive breakfast and only 10 percent access summer feeding sites.
You may be asking yourself, how do we put a stop to hunger? In the United States,

hunger is not caused by a shortage of food. Although we have enough resources and
transportation options, hunger is caused by poverty. Therefore, Pack to Attack Hunger benefits
Feeding Children Everywhere because of the resources Feeding Children Everywhere provides.
Feeding Children Everywhere give the opportunity for food to be packaged, and then delivered
to those who need it most.

Pack to Attack Hunger aspires to motivate students to come to the event and package
meals for just one hour of their day on Sunday, November 9. As the student director of Pack to
Attack Hunger I oversee all aspects of this event. My board has taken time to strategically think
of how to make this event the best it can be. We have used many rhetorical strategies to inspire
students and people in the Orlando community to get involved with Pack to Attack Hunger and
advertise the event to the right audience. Our rhetorical audience mostly consisted of students
and we had to cater to their likings. The only way to get people to participate at the event was to
physically show them. Through social media we were able to do that. Social media is an
important part of this event because it helps us raise awareness about hunger and the solution we
have created to stop hunger. We have also held one-on-one meetings with student leaders at UCF

to explain exactly what Pack to Attack Hunger is and our mission for the event.
Kairos timing was definitely a rhetorical strategy we as a team referred to when putting
this event together. Kairos is an ancient Greek word referring to the supreme time. After
researching the correlation between Kairos and rhetoric I managed to come up with a timeline
that would include the different times through out the month that we would contact organizations
to participate. Although I started planning the event in Spring 2014, I wanted to wait to announce
the date and the idea of the event until the Fall 2014 semester. As Kairos is explained as a
passing instant when an opening appears which must be driven through with force if success is to
be achieved. The timeline explained the different events the would lead up to Pack to Attack
Hunger, chapter visits that would be used to invite different chapters in Greek life, and the
meetings that needed to be held with UCF athletics to ensure their participation in Pack to Attack
Hunger.
This year will be the third year that the Panhellenic Council at UCF hosts Pack to Attack
Hunger. In the past, this event has been advertised through social media and has been
successfully inspiring people to make a change in our community. It is important to understand
the audience you are reaching when speaking about this event. Whether a student or working
adult is reading this is a vital aspect with trying to create a markerting plan. Therefore, we use
Facebook and Twitter to reach our targeted audience, students. College students check their
check their Facebook and Twitter pages more than they eat food. That is why we focus on using
these two specific outlets to update the students on the event. Rhetorically speaking, when
creating a timeline for this event and the events leading to Pack to Attack Hunger is it important
to realize who you are reaching and at what moment your audience is being reached.
