WHY DID I ASK YOU TO DO THAT?

That is

for NOI-CHI-GIA: Regularly run 4 km

for KIEM-SI: Do Nhat-Luyen-Kim every day
for KHI-PHAP-GIA: Do Bai-Di-Xa every week-end
for VIET-CHI RANGER: 108 push-ups every day
For those who are enrolled in our Black-Belt Programs this year, the primary response to this question seems
that that is part of our technical training, and moreover also for our mental training. Correct!
However, there is also another of my deep concern: I want to train you for having a good HABIT; the habit
of caring about what we do and about making good activities our HABIT OF DOING THEM REGULARLY.
Remember: HABITS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR A LARGE PART OF OUR SUCCESS OR FAILURE. The
aim of our training is creating good habits in life and changing bad habits for ever. Running creates the habit of
being dynamic; NHAT-LUYEN-KIEM is for precision and spontaneity; BAI-DI-XA cares about our breathing
and inner power; and 108 push-ups is the habit of strong people who would never give up without reaching the
goal.
You could also notice, while reading these lines, that master Phan Hoang has created for himself the habit of
writing something rather than sitting idle at some coffee shop, but he avoids having the habit of visiting coffeeshops regularly.

INTRODUCTION. For years you have probably seen many pictures of Master Phan-Hoang at
various places in the world standing in the posture of I-BNG KNH-THIN / SKY-EAGLE.
Why did he do it?
I-BNG KNH-THIN / SKY-EAGLE is a common exercise for several disciplines
including VIETVODAO , NOI-CONG CHI-LUC (hard way), VIETTAICHI (middle way),
VIET-KHI-PHAP (soft way), and CHI-CUOC (the art of legs), with different manners of
execution: Static (inner work) vs Dynamic (combat).
This document is for those who are enrolled in the three Black Belt Programs 2012 (VIET-KHIPHAP; NOI-CONG CHI-LUC, VIETCHIKIEM) and to RANGER Members.
Since this practice implies a high risk of falling on ground one must carefully consider the risk
and take full responsibility for his or her own safety in doing it.
15

DESCRIPTION. The posture represents an eagle firmly standing on one leg in equilibrium
between sky and earth. The two wings could be in various positions.
MISSION OF I-BNG KNH-THIN (DBKT). Belonging to the group of DIEU-BO
(iu-B/Birds Techniques) DBKT has several missions, especially the following:
-to show a representative example of bird technique in the Viet-Chi System: combination and
integration of Beauty, Efficacy, and High Spirit,
-to offer a specific training technique which combines body-mind and combat
-to express, as a symbol, message and guidance.

MESSAGE (SYMBOL). Whenever a Sky-Eagle comes to a place and executes this posture,
the meaning is: I AM STANDING HERE, SKY AND EARTH BEING WITNESSES, THAT I AM IN EQUILIBRIUM
POSITION WITH THE UNIVERSE AND AS ALWAYS I AM LOYAL TO THE IDEAL OF SKY- EAGLE.

The hands and arms could express metaphors using hand-seals as language. For example the
two hand-seals vo-uy/no fear with one pointing to the sky and the other to the earth (or the
sea in the attached picture at Palma, Nov. 2012) express the teaching of Master Phan-Hoang
that said: Being in connection with the universe in perfect equilibrium one is part of the
universe, nothing could affect ones mind.
When the two hands are open-upward, the meaning is for HAPPINESS; when the two hands
are open-downward: ALL PROBLEMS DISAPPEAR. To know more about hand-seals
please refer to the book SU-LO (Viet-Chi Post).

TECHNICAL TRAINING
For VIET-KHI-PHAP members: Please execute this exercise very slowly and change the
position of your legs and hands smoothly. Personal preference for breathing methods could be
selected. A brief movement of gong/ muscular contraction is to be applied at the end of
exhaling. Alternate your breathing with the two methods of Tho-Phoi and Tho-Bung (Lung
breathing, and Belly breathing) is recommended.
For the other disciplines:
Level 1. To train legs and equilibrium: Stay still in this posture for two minutes (then later 3 to
5 minutes); deep breathing (applying alternatively Tho-Phoi/Lungs Breathing and ThoBung/Belly Breathing), then change legs and hands for the same during of time. Standard
training is for 5 times of change.
16

Level 2. From ground jump up on top of a small wall directly in the posture of DBKT. If failed,
you should train yourself until you are skilled enough to successfully jump up on top of a wall
(standard of height is for 60cm). Then do the same exercise as for Level 1, except that after
each change of legs you must jump down then jump up again.
Dont be discouraged: YOU ARE A NOI-CHI-GIA, A TRANG-SI, or a RANGER!
Level 3. At this level you dont stay still; you jump up then execute: Da-Thang/Front-kick, DaNgang/Lateral-kick, Da-sau/Rear-kick, Da-vong/Circling-kick; then change legs; then moving
left three steps then back, then moving right three steps while deploying attacks in the style of
i-bng-chuyn-dc: The Eagle Moving Its Wings. Then jump down in order to restart by
jumping up.
It must look like a Majectic Dance of The Sky-Eagle or in other term, the deadly attack of the
King Eagle! You do it and you will discover How Great To Be A King Eagle.
PLEASE TAKE SOME PICTURES OR VIDEOS of your actions and send them to me.
Be Strong

BUDO KAN CENTER TOKYO, Tokyo 12th October 2012

BUDO KAN in Tokyo is a beautiful place of martial arts.

During the last 30 years the world has been changing tremendously; the
question is:
What is the missions of Martial Arts today?
If Martial Arts are simply the arts of fighting, so no much needs for
change; some adaptations would be enough. On the reverse, if Martial
18

Arts are understood as effective methods of education using the fighting

arts as a way to educate people, in this case the question of Mission must
be seriously reviewed. But Who really are in charge of this vital question?
So far, we do not see much serious and competent people in this field. So
we count on. YOU! Its up to your generation to make change.

This non-edited LETTER is a first draft and private document. If there is any disturbing resemblance to actual persons, events or
localities please consider that is entirely coincidental.

ALMATY MY DISCOVERY
Hello all,
I am back home safely in Canada after two months travelling widely through France, Portugal, Poland, Spain and
Kazakhstan. Thousands photos are now in my external hard drive under all kinds of classification: landscapes,
mountains, old monuments, modern buildings, churches, women and men, animals, street life, and of course many
other groups of our eight disciplines through Stages in Porto, Les Sables dOlonne, Vo-Viet Competition, ChiVat Championship, and Chi-Kiem School in Poland. We can make many exciting PowerPoint Shows if someone
volunteer to help.
Almaty in Kazakhstan could surprise you. This nice garden-city, surrounded by high mountains, having one and a
half million inhabitants is a very dynamic center of scientific, cultural, historical, financial and industrial activities
as I can notice during my stay there. Once I wandered around the old part of Almaty I incidentally got into a
beautiful modern shopping center named Silk Way, suddenly I awakened to the realization that thousands years
ago the Silk Road passed by where I was happily standing. What a pleasure!
At Kainar University, for two weeks I taught intensive MBA courses plus a seminar on Dynamic Finance, a kind
of seminar I designed for Black Belt MBA people, we mean the executive people who would like to know how
to successfully apply Martial Art Spirit and Strategy to Business activities under globalized world. My learners
were exalted and I was very happy, however I do confess that the hot weather and many long days of teaching
made me, in the end, more tired than usual. The good thing is you clearly feel that here, in this former Soviet state,
people really want to learn and to contribute to the growth of their new republic. Kainar is among the first private
universities in this country, a university with clear vision and high mission, but it is not among the most
prestigious and wealthy universities in Almaty and that is why I admire the efforts of its rector, deans, and faculty
members in running this promising institution through challenges. Here, in Almaty, students fight hard for having
an opportunity to learn, while in Paris or elsewhere in Western Europe some students also fight hard but for having
the right to strike! So, in life, there are two different kinds of challenge on the same issue of learning. If asked I
would advise our youth to travel far away and learn how people elsewhere today are so willing to learn. Travelling
is to open the eyes and see how we often miss to see what is missing around us.
Charles Phan Hoang ( June 2008)

BEST WISHES
THE WROCLAW BRIDGE
On the 14th November 2011 Master HO-GAN arrived by train in Wroclaw for the first time. Wroclaw
is 340km south-west of Warsaw.
Imagine you arrived, one evening to a place, an unknown place, probably very beautiful, with old
churches and elegant houses, but you cannot know that much because it was a thick foggy evening.
What you could see was the sign of a nearby coffee shop and some people moving around like
phantoms through the diffused lights coming from everywhere which allowed you to guess that the
central place of this city was very large. Perhaps, it could be as large as the Red Square in Moscow
when imagination worked your mind. Plus, you did not speak the language and you did not have a
map of this city at hand. You got lost. Happily, getting lost gives us the opportunity to choose
between being afraid or to be quite detached from the reality of the moment for any possible dream.
For Master HO-GAN, that evening, Wroclaw was the most beautiful city in the world, the world of his
dream. He did not try to find the way to his hotel. He just sat at that nice coffee shop and admired the
large place under heavy fog. He hope that he could one day come back to this city, on a foggy
evening, and find the way to the famous bridge of Wroclaw.
Phan Hoang (from POLAND I LOVE)

LE PONT DE WROCLAW
26

-1. Libre ton cur de la haine.
-2. Libre ton esprit des inquitudes.
-3. Vis simplement.
-4. Donne plus.
-5. Attends moins.

The donkey in the well

One day a farmer's donkey fell down a well. The animal was moaning piteously for hours,
and the farmer wondered what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old and the well had
to go anyway, it was not profitable for him to retrieve the donkey. He invited all his neighbors
to come and help. They all grabbed a shovel and began to bury the donkey in the well.
At first, the donkey realized what was happening and began to scream terribly. Then to
everyone's amazement, he was silent. A few shovelfuls later, the farmer finally looked in the
bottom of the well and was amazed at what he saw. With every shovelful of earth falling on
him, the donkey was doing something amazing. He was shaking to remove dirt from his back
and rode it. While the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel on the animal, he shook and
rose above. Soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey is out
the well and began to trot! Life will try to put on you all kinds of garbage. The trick to getting
out of the hole is shaking to move ...
Each of your troubles is a stone that can help grow. We can get out of the deepest wells by
never stoping. Never give up! Shake up and go for it!
Remember the five simple rules to never forget, especially in the darkest moments. To be
happy:
-1. Free your
heart from hatred.
-2. Free your
mind from worries.
-3. Live simply.
-4. Give more.
-5. Wait less.
