CHARACTERISTICS OF
PHILIPPINE FOLK DANCES
OBJECTIVES
• Discuss the following:
✔ Characteristics of Philippines Folk Dances
✔ Do’s and don'ts's in folk Dancing
✔ Fundamental Positions of Arms and Feet in Dancing
• Understand the nature of Philippine Folk Dance.
• Execute with proficiency and confidence the basic step
of Philippine Folk Dance.
OBJECTIVE OF RHYTHMIC
ACTIVITIES
1. Develop skills necessary for recreational
enjoyment.

2. Maintain good posture and physical


efficiency.

3. Promote emotional freedom.

4. Develop a balanced and well-coordinated


body.
OBJECTIVES OF TEACHING
• To foster patriotism and nationalism through the study of our
dance.
• To arouse better appreciation of Philippine music and folk
dances.
• To provide through dancing, a healthful form of relaxation and
recreation.
• To develop a graceful and rhythmic coordination of body
movements that will improve posture.
• To preserve for posterity, folk dances and music indigenous to
the different regions of the Philippines.
• To demonstrate the growth of Filipino culture through the

DO’S IN FOLK DANCING
1. Dance in a natural, simple and direct manner.
2. Dance with ease and smoothness.
3. Use the proper costume for the dance.
4. Follow directions and dance instructions as closely as
possible.
5. Dance with feeling and expression.
DONT’S IN FOLK DANCING
1. Do not exaggerate the dance steps.
2. Do not make the dances too dainty and graceful
like ballet.
3. Don’t make entrance and exit long.
4. Don’t make steps too elaborate and
complicated.
5. Don’t call a dance a folk dance unless steps come
from traditional dances.
FUNDAMENTAL POSITION OF
ARMS IN DANCING
1st POSITION
• Arms are raised
forward in a
circle in front of
the chest with
fingertips of
both hands
about an inch
apart .
2ND POSITION
• The arms are
placed sideways
a little below
shoulder level
with palms
facing up.
3 RD POSITION
• One arm is raised
in a semi-circle
slightly in front of
the head
(amplified
position while the
other arm remains
as in second
position).
4TH POSITION
• One arms is
raised in
amplified
position, while
the other is an in
first position.
5TH POSITION
• Both arms are
raised to form a
circle over and
slightly in front
of the head
(amplified
position)
FUNDAMENTAL
POSITION OF
FEET IN DANCING
1st POSITION
• The feet
position is
executed with
the heels
together and
toes apart at an
angle of about
ninety degrees
2ND POSITION
• The feet
position is
performed with
feet sideward
about a pace
apart with heels
parallel each
other.
3 RD POSITION
• The heel of
one foot is
close to the in-
step of the
other foot
4TH POSITION
• One foot is
forward,
about a pace
distance,
with toes out.
5TH POSITION
• One foot is
placed in font of
the other foot
with the heel
close to the toe
of the other
foot.
