Health is most often being related to solely the physical well-being of an
individual. Little do people know that health is more than looking healthy. As we
learned in the previous module, health has various dimensions: physical,
emotional, mental, social, moral- spiritual, and environmental. Aside from
looking healthy, an individual must also be feeling, thinking, and interacting
healthily to achieve wellness.

1
Understanding Stress

Do you think that stress is always something negative? Stress can either be
negative or positive!

STRESS – physiological (physical) and emotional responses to a significant or

unexpected change or disruption of one’s life (Payne, et al., 2005).

STRESSOR – refers to the things that make a person stressed.

TWO KINDS OF STRESS

1. EUSTRESS refers to a positive and healthy response of the body from a stressor. It
produces good effects on one’s well-being. For example, a person who studied for a
long hour and took and got an outstanding grade in the exam may feel happiness and
enjoyment.
2. DISTRESS refers to a negative reaction of the body towards a given stressor. It may cause
problems in health, alter the mood and emotions and even affect the way a person
thinks. For example, when a person woke up late for work, he or she may feel anger
and disappointment

COPING WITH STRESS (COMMON AREAS OF STRESSOR)

As a student, they need to know what their eustress and distress are to handle things
properly. Stress management skills are techniques that can be used to cope with the harmful
effects produced by stress. Thinking positive at all times, having a smiley face, and laughing
are the best ways to lessen the stress in life.

COPING WITH STRESS (Healthful from Unhealthful Strategies)

Coping strategies pertain to specific efforts, both behavioral and psychological, that
could affect the person's stress management skills. These are actions that we employ
consciously or unconsciously to deal with stress, whether eustress or distress, problems, or
uncomfortable emotions caused by some factors or changes in our
environment/situations. It could be healthful and or unhealthful. Unhealthful coping
strategies tend individuals to feel good in a short period. However, it could have adverse
and harmful effects on one's life. On the other hand, healthy coping strategies, for
instance, may not provide instant relief to specific problems, but they could bring long-
lasting positive

skills to cope and aim to control stress's harmful effects. Since stress is both psychological and
