The Big Picture
Manage and build web pages
from reusable static or dynamic
components with no coding in a
secure, manageable way

Traditional web content management solutions aim to make it easy for non-technical users
to create content with simple-to-use, fill-in-the-blanks forms and WYSIWYG (What You
See Is What You Get) editors. The concept is to separate content development from layout
and let the web professionals manage how web content is targeted, published, and
presented to customers.

Rapidly design web pages,

contribute content, or launch new
microsites that show how live
content and layout will appear

But this approach has proven to be lengthy and expensive, requiring significant IT
involvement and creating a web development bottleneck for new business initiatives. In
addition, it has provided business users with little direct control over the layout, functionality, and management of their intranets, extranets, and public sites. These professionals
are looking for greater control in order to ensure that this critical communications vehicle
is meeting their business objectives.

Next-generation web content management

such as Dreamweaver, and import
its templates to Page Builder
Utilize the XML storage format,

schema validation, efficient
parsing-processing, and rendering
to multiple markup languages

Customers, partners, employees, and investors have turned to the Web as a primary
communications channel because it has proven itself as a relevant, timely, personalized
form of communication. As the Web has become business critical, so has involving
business professionals directly in how information is communicated. These professionals,
often referred to as knowledge workers, are demanding greater control over the
process: creating content, modifying the design, deploying web applications, setting
personalization, creating new sites, and so forth.
Built on EMC Documentum Web Publisher, the next generation of web content
management solutions gives business professionals greater control over websites by
increasing ease-of-use and leveraging the IT efficiencies of a centralized infrastructure.
Responsibility for individual sites is devolved to the business users closest to day-to-day
operations. The result is a streamlined web content creation-to-publishing process that
is aligned with business requirements and that makes the overall management of web
properties far more efficient and less expensive.

EMC Documentum Web Publisher Page BuilderWYSIWYG editing for content and web design

EMC Documentum Web Publisher Page Builder takes full advantage of established
publishing processes and all the content services available from an enterprise content
management platform, including digital asset management, compliance, and enterprise
scalability. Page Builder combines content creation roles and tools with site design in a
revolutionary user interface.

A revolutionary approach
Page Builder is a revolutionary approach to web content management that allows
non-technical business users to utilize the WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get)
editor to create content and layout (page design) and to deploy web applications such
as Java script, blogs, and other external content sources. The new editor combines
ease-of-use with powerful capabilities formerly found in complex design tools. Both content
creators and web designers use a full browser-based editor, requiring no programming
knowledge. The browser-based editor easily fits in IT environments without the need
for downloading applets or ActiveX controls.

EMC Documentum Web Publishing Architecture

How it works
Using Page Builder, knowledge workers can navigate through existing websites and
select the page or individual component to edit. Or they can build a web page from
scratch simply by adding rows and columns and defining the sections: header, footer,
navigation, content area, and others. During the creation process, users have the ability
to lock and unlock every component, as well as select the preview function to see what
the page looks like in context of the entire site.
When creating a web page, Page Builder supports the editing and deployment of multiple
content types, such as rich text, plain text, images, hyperlinks, navigation, movies
(Flash, Windows Media Player), layouts, and external components.
With the help of simple, context-sensitive menus, users can create practically an unlimited
number of arbitrary page layouts. The content is stored in the repository as an XML file
and rendered using XSLT. Each page template is stored on the server as an XML document
and the structure is driven by the XML Schema. Among other things, Schema defines
which elements are allowed and where they are allowed. It also defines the details of
each content element, for example, its attributes and default values.
Unlike other editors, Page Builder supports web content transformations out of the
boxweb developers do not need to design a new XSL Content validation and updates
are performed on the server-side using XSL. In certain cases this is done asynchronously, while browser-side updates (non-persistent) are performed to improve user
interface responsiveness.

Page Builder in in-context-editing mode, where the non-technical user simply clicks on the components
and edits the content. The user has selected the rich text component and is able to make edits "in-line"
with the page

A more advanced user has the ability to edit the layout as well as the content, including the ability to
insert a row, insert a new component, or lock both the content and the layout
