2014

INTRODUCTION

An initiative of the Charles Correa Foundation, DWELL is a workshop for

Architects, Designers and Students of Architecture and Design to instigate
thought on mitigating increasing urban densities especially in the context of
housing. The workshop intends to introduce the many perspectives, forces and
pull-push factors that influence life in a city.
The workshop also aims to zoom in and zoom out to micro and macro issues of
living and housing in super-dense urban conditions. The dialogue is intended to
revolve around design of a dwelling, its many contexts and the fundamental
amenities that are critical to the success of a vibrant housing layer in any city.
DWELL will also provoke thought on both ends of a spectrum: on one end, it will
discuss issues of privacy, gender, use, comfort and delight - the basics of a
dwelling unit while on the other, it will locate all ideas within a specific typology
and context.
India does not have one urban focus - we have a web of Metros, Tier 1 Cities, Tier
2 Urban Centers, Suburban Centers, Towns and Villages. If by 2050, 75% of the
worlds population is to live in cities, cities need to be planned for this 75%. This
thought forms the basis of the workshop.
6 teams will ideate on designing a unit in 6 urban centres of varying scales,
capacities, character and climate. This will open the discussion to a spectrum from a need for densification to a limit on saturation.
All ideas will be documented and chronicled by the Charles Correa Foundation
for further research and action.

1.
Design a dwelling for a 2 + 2 + 2 (2 Children, 2 Working Adults and 2 Retired Elderly) Family in your city. The dwelling
can be imagined in any context within the city - the site is to be hypothetical but has to refer to a real condition.
2.
The dwelling unit has to have fundamental spaces for all life activities - living, sleeping, washing and cooking.
3.
The dwelling unit has to support incremental organization and thus has to be imagined as a cluster / block condition.
Other than this, the team is free to debate issues like minimum space, spaces for all age, common and community
spaces, shared amenities, services and structure and the design of the interior space.

Keywords
Context

In the purview of the workshop, Context is referred to as climatic, social, economical and cultural
landscape of the urban center - immediate and broad.

Typology

Typology refers to the character of the dwelling unit / cluster / block. Tenement, apartment, tower,
studio, kutcha/pukka squatter etc. are all typological references.

Amenities

Amenities refer to playground, schools, hospitals, marketplaces, spaces for elderly

etc. Amenities are independent of the basic services and are referred for planning.

Cluster/Block The Cluster and Block definitions are open to interpretation and refer to scalability,
incremental capacity and adaptability of the unit as per proposed design.
