Background

Description of
project

Services provided

Guddu Barrage is located in the District of Kashmore in the north of


Sindh Province. It is the first of three barrages on the Indus River
within the Province of Sindh. Construction of Guddu Barrage
started in 1959 and it was commissioned in 1962.
The barrage structure is 4445 long and is designed to pass flood
discharges of 12 lac cusecs. It consists of 64 spans of 60 each and
one navigation lock with a span of 50. Four canals offtake
upstream of the barrage; two on the left side and two on the right
side.
The current study is tasked with:
i)
Reviewing the operation of the barrage and its overall
condition;
ii)
Making recommendations for any necessary rehabilitation
measures or enhancements to the barrage's general configuration;
iii) Making recommendations on any adjustments to the barrage
operating rules to ensure sustained operation in the immediate
future;
iv) Reviewing and updating a previous Feasibility Study for the
construction of a hydro power plant at Guddu;
v)
Carrying out detailed designs and preparation of contract
documents for any elements of the work approved;
vi) A separate consultancy agreement will be negotiated for
Construction Supervision of the approved Works.
i) Condition survey of mechanical, electrical and civil elements
of the barrage and associated structures;

ii)
Topographic survey extending 15 miles upstream and 7 miles
downstream of the barrage including river channel, riverine areas
and embankments;
iii) Generation of environmental and social impact assessment,
including gender-specific survey, and environmental management
plan;
iv) Generation of Resettlement Framework Policy and production
of Resettlement Action Plan;
v)
Production of mathematical and physical models;
vi) Review of 1990 feasibility study for the generation of hydro
power at the barrage;
vii) Review of silt management strategies to minimise silt
entrance to canals;
viii) Review of river alignment options with a view to straightening
the approach section of the river leading to the barrage including
provision of addition spurs;
ix) Detailed designs and production of contract documents;
x)
Economic and financial analysis of benefits of proposed
works and their alternatives.
Results

Completion of feasibility study and tender designs for a package of


works worth approximately US$ 550 million.
