Welcome
EAGE Presidents welcome
On behalf of EAGE, I am delighted to welcome you
to Madrid for the 77th EAGE Annual Conference
& Exhibition. This important gathering of todays
leading specialists, innovators and doers in the
geoscience and engineering disciplines builds on
our long history of successful conferences since
the foundation of our Association in 1951.
By choosing the theme Earth Science for Energy
and Environment we want to demonstrate that our conference comprising a wide range of papers and posters, workshops and field trips,
exhibits and novel technologies represents the contributions of multidisciplinary geoscientists to society. We are focused both on meeting
the global needs for energy and on sustainable use of the earths many
resources. At EAGE, scientists and innovators will share their expert
knowledge and insights into a wide range of earth resource questions.
Informed debate and smart ideas should be our hall mark.
I am especially pleased that 2015 marks a resumption of our association with the Society of Petroleum Engineers EUROPEC conference. This
means that engineers and geoscientists can both dig deep into their
special areas of interest and at the same time challenge each other in
multi-disciplinary thinking and debate.
The opening plenary session and the executive sessions will address key
issues for today, setting pointers and giving a direction to our conference. In particular, the Executive Sessions on Boldness versus Risk in
Exploration and on Unconventional Regulations promise to be conference highlights.
EAGE has been working hard to make sure we have a programme which
is focused around the up and coming generation students and young
professionals. The student programme goes from strength to strength,
and our use of e-posters has been especially successful in helping young
enthusiasts share their new ideas. We have also been working hard
to build new special interest groups, so make sure you dont miss the
special sessions for Young Professionals and Women in Geoscience and
Engineering.
Madrid is a great cultural capital, and our social programme and special conference evening will be a great occasion for networking, meeting
old friends, and engaging in debate. Finally, I want to thank our Local
Advisory Committee, EAGE office staff and the many members who volunteer for the many committees, technical sessions and programmes
that make this gathering possible. EAGE is indebted to you for making
this Conference and Exhibition a big success.
Welcome to our 2015 Conference & Exhibition!

Invitation to Madrid 2015

Earth Science for Energy and Environment
Welcome from Marcos Mozetic, Chairman of the
Local Advisory Committee, EAGE Madrid 2015.
Society today, fed by a massive pool of knowl
edge and the speed of current communications, is
exerting a healthy pressure on our scientific com
munity to mitigate the dependence on fossil fuels
and, with that, improve our environment.
Nevertheless, I feel obligated to ask myself two questions: What if ef
ficient alternatives take longer than expected? What if fine tuning of
global climate models indicates more complex interactions between
natural and man-made effects than currently accepted? The only answer
to either a belief or denial position is a deeper scientific understanding
and further technology development. We require scientific debate to better understand the key underlying issues and technology advances to
continue providing the energy resources needed, without compromising
our future energy needs while assuring our communities of the smallest
possible negative impact.
The global nature of EAGEs annual convention and the multidisciplinary
assembly it is able to involve can expose several points of view on these
subjects. This is a golden opportunity to provide answers for the medium
term. Progress will not be achieved without an open sharing of knowledge, which is the basis of our convention.
Dont miss Madrid 2015. This is indeed an occasion to discuss Earth
Science for Energy and the Environment. After Bruces tempting offer of
infinite waterways and bridges for Amsterdam 2014, we can only promise you the same intensive technical presentations and debates, amidst
the warm and dry Castilian days and refreshing evenings in the shadows of the Guadarrama range. Madrid, in itself, is sufficient reason to
attend but should you need a bonus to entice you and your partner then,
Segovia, Toledo, Avila, El Escorial and Aranjuez are all within a stones
throw. I hope you can make it and if you do, I wish you a pleasant stay
at Madrid 2015.

EAGE Forum on Non-technical Risk in the Upstream Business

17:00 18:30 hrs

This year for the EAGE Forum we are going to focus the discussion on
two main trends, Boldness vs Risk in Exploration and Unconventional
Regulations where Earth Science and Environment are put together to
work. As new technical barriers are broken, new geological ideas are
put to test. Nowadays, ultra deep water prospects are now reachable
and very costly as well. Geoscientists have to be brave enough to overcome not just the geological challenges but also the financial risks that
companies are exposed to. They have also be very conscious when proposing new large-scale operation projects such as the unconventionals.
Sustainability, Safety and Environment are the main concerns and cannot
be ruled out of the equation.

Workshop 11

Convenors:

M. Esteban (Repsol)
F. Fernandez Ibaez (ExxonMobil)
B. Gauthier (Total SA)

Workshop summary

Diagenesis and fracturing in carbonates are often so intimately related

that one cannot be understood without the other. This workshop will be
dedicated to discussing the prediction of these processes and their interaction and impact on fluid flow from the time of deposition through
burial and uplift.
Workshop 9
Attenuation Estimation and Compensation from
Broadband Seismic Data

Convenors:
T. Blanchard (Total E&P)

N. Favretto-Cristini (CNRS Marseille)

D. Rappin (Total E&P)
B. Ursin (Norwegian University of Science and
Technology)
Workshop summary

Broadband data offer better ground for the study of attenuation than
conventional seismic situations. Insufficient frequency bandwidth
generally results in strong ambiguity between frequency-dependent
and frequency-independent attenuation, leading to ambiguous results via ad-hoc methods. The broadband situation reducing ambiguity opens the way for more accurate estimation and high-fidelity
compensation.

Workshop summary

Field trip description

The field of seismic interferometry has progressed swiftly over the past
decade. This workshop shows and discusses the recent innovations in
seismic interferometry including new imaging methods and novel
approaches for characterisation and monitoring of the subsurface.

The Cenozoic Madrid basin infilling is closely related to the tectonic evolution of the Central System and the Iberian Chain. Eight main depositional sequences are recognised from the Paleogene, where the latter
four were deposited in a continental environment. Structural and sediment logical analysis allows to reconstruct a complex evolutionary history with strong changes both in depocentres, sedimentary environments
and sources provenance.

Short courses
EAGE offers a selection of one- and two-day short courses on Sunday
31 May, Monday 1 and Friday 5 June. The instructors are acknowledged
experts (both industry professionals and academics). EAGE encourages
them to use a combination of theory, illustration and current best practices to deliver up-to-date information and theories, offering a better understanding of the upcoming challenges within the industry. Course material
is included in the course fee. Two special courses on the programme are
part of the EAGE Education Tour (EET). EET courses are subsidised by
EAGE and are therefore offered at modest prices and accompanied by a
dedicated course book.

anisotropy is such a fundamental concept, it covers topics in seismic acquisition, processing, imaging, and interpretation, all based on seismic
rock physics. This is not a methods course, but rather is a concept
course, familiarizing the participants with essential concepts, enabling
them to ask the right questions in future conversations, rather than to
operate particular software packages

The Benefit of Broadband Technology for Reservoir

Characterization and Imaging - the End User Value

This one-day course will focus on the methodology, numerical computation, solution strategy, and applications of 3D physical property inversions in both gravity and magnetic methods. It starts with the fundamentals of potential-field data observed in gravity, gravity gradiometry,
and magnetic surveys and then presents the formulation of 3D gravity
and magnetic inversions and the practical strategies for their efficient
solution and applications to large-scale problems. It continues with
the inversion of newer such as airborne gravity gradiometry data and
borehole gravity data, as well as that of magnetic data under difficult
conditions such as the presence of strong remanent magnetization and
self-demagnetization. Finally, it demonstrates the inversion techniques
through case studies in both mineral exploration and oil and gas exploration and productions.

Instructor:

C. Reiser (PGS)

Course summary

The main aim of this one-day course is to provide a very accessible

overview of the many concepts behind the broadband seismic (primarily offshore) and its implication for the reservoir focused asset based
geoscientist. The course will be aiming to objectively discussion the various broadband seismic technologies and commercial offerings available
today and their respective merits with regards to quantitative reservoir
characerization and reservoir imaging using real world application examples. The course will further attempt to identify possible pitfalls and
issues with regards to the treatment of broadband data that might lead
to flawed or erroneous QI.

Students
Introduction
We are serious about students!
EAGE provides students with the opportunity to grow, learn and prosper
at the next student programme, taking place at the 77th EAGE Conference
& Exhibition 2015. The theme of this years student programme is Fuel
Your Future.
The student programme continues to expand and develop, while maintaining core fundamental offerings in up-to-date industry knowledge and
skill development.

The EAGE FIELD Challenge promotes cross-disciplinary geoscience and

engineering integration within universities. In teams, students will be
required to analyse and propose a FIELD development plan for a discovered hydrocarbon resource. This year the data set is sponsored by Repsol.
University teams can apply for the FIELD Challenge opportunity via an
essay submission, 2,0003,000 words in length, with this years topic:
Professionalism: what it means and why it is critical to the Oil and Gas
Business. Deadline is 15 December. Essay guidelines and rules of the
FIELD Challenge are available on www.eage.org/students. The six best
essays will be selected and those finalists will receive travel grants to
Madrid 2015 to present their FIELD development plan to an expert
jury. The presentations will be held on Monday 1 June at the 77th EAGE
Conference & Exhibition 2015.

Student short course 1
Tectonics-sedimentation Relationships Importance in Oil Exploration

Tuesday 2 June, 11:00 13:00 hrs

Lecturer:

J. Poblet (Universidad de Oviedo)

Students interested in attending the conference evening on Wednesday

3 June will be subject to an additional charge.

This short course is intended to summarise the main features of growth

strata associated with theoretical, experimental and natural fold-related
thrusts and the information obtained from the analysis of their tectonicssedimentation relationships. This is achieved through practical exercises
that provide a better understanding of the geometry and evolution of structures and therefore, can help to improve oil exploration and exploitation.

Motivational speaker

Student short course 2

Do not miss the inspiring presentation from Juan Manuel Garca-Ruiz on

Patterns on the Rocks.

Potential Fields Methods for Hydrocarbon Exploration

Minerals are key materials for earth sciences investigations. In a very

few cases they show themselves as the large polyhedra that have fascinated mankind since remote times. Even more bizarre is to find colossal crystals other than those dreamed up in literature and comics
masterpieces. But there are exceptions. The Cave of Giant Crystals in
the Naica mine (Mexico) is one of the most amazing displays of mineral
beauty ever created by nature. Behind that beauty there is science that
tells us about the conditions at which these crystals formed and about
their later geological history. Deciphering the formation mechanism of
these crystals or of any other mineral growth pattern is a formidable
challenge. But the reward is immense. Understanding how crystals, their
morphology and their texture are related to growth conditions is the
gate to revealing bygone geochemical environments when no other
proxies are available. In this lecture he invites you to join him on a personal journey through rock patterns, from giant crystals to mineral selfassembly in the earliest earth.

Lecturer:

Wednesday 3 June, 10:30 12:30 hrs

A.M. Mantilla-Pimiento (Repsol)

This short course aims to provide a basic understanding of how conventional gravity, gravity gradiometry and magnetic methods are applied in
hydrocarbon exploration from the regional to prospect scale. Participants
learn about the qualitative and quantitative interpretation workflows
standard in the industry and some case studies highlighting the benefits
of integrated interpretation with seismic in areas where acoustic energy
is poorly transmitted.
Student short course 3
Environmental Impact and Exploration

Wednesday 3 June, 14:00 15:30 hrs

Lecturer:

M. Gallego (ERM)

The course is focused on providing an introduction to the management of

non-technical risks along an exploration projects lifecycle and the potential impact on the business. The attendees will learn about international
management tools and industry standards developed to manage risks
and opportunities and the increasing importance of the non-technical in
the overall companys performance.

Recruitment opportunities
The student programme is also offering a chance for students to advance
their career opportunities through advice and tips for professional development provided by recruiters and experienced senior industry experts
