INT. PLEASANT BUT SIMPLE APARTMENT - DAY

Dressed in a quilt robe as she stands by the living room
window. ANGEL, unmarried, mid-twenties, has had a lot of
changes over the last twelve months. She is more secure now
but still has worries. Anxious about what lies ahead, she
bites her lip and looks wistfully at the park across the
street.
ANGEL
On the phone
Of course Im worried. Im just
hoping for the best.
Let me know as soon as you can.
If were lucky, Ill see you in a
few hours.
Picks up a framed wedding photo of her parents from the
table by the window.
Yeah, thanks ... after they died I
knew I had to be strong. Heck I was
just a kid myself. Those next ten
years were tough...
Youre right, who could have
guessed just last year how things
would be now...
Flash back to:

INT. DIFFERENT APARTMENT, DREARY BEDROOM - MORNING

Same framed photo of parents wedding is on a old dresser by
a Virgin Mary figure and a small jewelry box.
Angel walks in from the shower, wrapped in a plain cotton
robe. She gets ready for work in front of the dresser.

INT. OFFICE - MORNING

Large open office space with private managers office in

desks or cubicles.

INT. FILE AREA

Large stacks of papers and files indicate lots of work to
do. ANGEL is busy checking material.
Enter Gwen
GWEN
Sorry Im late. Looks like you did
a lot already!
ANGEL
A little miffed.
Theres plenty more to do.
Gwen puts her coat on the rack, moves to a file cabinet and
puts her purse inside. Starts to say something and pulls
back, hurt that Angel has ignored her.
Both busy in silence for a while moving files, checking
lists. They work in a shared area with two computers.
Gwen finds it difficult to concentrate on work.
GWEN
I gotta find a better route to get
here. Those pro-life protesters had
ninth street blocked again. The
cops made me go all the way over to
Maple and the train was running.
ANGEL
Doesnt look up as she makes a computer entry.
I got caught by the train last week
too. I was only a couple minutes
late and Mr. Lopez gave me his
"dont do that" look.
Faces Gwen
It shouldnt have bothered me, but
since we moved here I cant afford
to screw up. I need the work.
More work in silence. Angel is methodical and efficient. She
hands several files to Gwen and indicates some piles on a

nearby table. Gwen flits between piles seeming to not really

accomplish anything.

off the desk
GORDY
Oh, yeah, sure...
Stands
Yeah, that Shirley, she stayed to
lock up after Al left. Yeah, after
I nailed the contract she and me
made a contract of our own, if you
know what I mean..
Looks around through window to see Gwen leaning over a file
drawer.
Looks like Ive got potential
action here too!
LESTER
The action I want from you is
sales. Besides shes been hit on by
every guy in here.
Flips papers on desk.
GORDY
Hey, how about that one?
Nods head toward Angel by the far wall, motions a female
figure in the air.

4.

LESTER
Angel? Shes pretty new, and so far
shes my best researcher. Very
serious though - maybe not your
style.
GORDY
Hey, am I your top sales guy or
not?
LESTER
Waves his hand "so - so"
GORDY
Whats the name of that account you
want to resurrect? You know the one
Chico lost.
LESTER
Templeton Industries
GORDY
Oh yeah... Ill see if I can nail
it and Angel too Motions having sex with a pelvis action.
What-a-ya-think?
LESTER
You need to work on sales figures.
Not the other kind.

ANGEL
Um - yeah, just seem to be in a
fog. I didnt get much sleep.
GWEN
So has Gordy been after you?
ANGEL
Oh- Gordy - no. He may be an OK
salesman, but hes not for me. No,
it was last night. A fellow came
into the diner -

27.

It was after midnight, the place

was dead. He stayed for over an
hour.
I cant get him off my mind. He was
so easy to talk with. And hes good
looking to boot!
I think I must have laid out my
whole life. Even told him about my
parents car accident and living
with my aunt.
It was amazing how everything
poured out of me. I dont remember
seeing him before but he says he
comes there often - must be on my
off nights.

EDUARDO
Our deal is pretty sweet, but I got

his deposit after ten. Its the
whole weeks take. We just wait til
he closes and goes to his car.
Quick and easy. Ill stop him, you
come up behind and take the bag.
You go with the money. I back off
and hes left standin! Too Easy!
Frankie is hesitant.

29.

FRANKIE
This is a lot different, Im not...
EDUARDO
Dont forget what I told ya. You
dont want no trouble do ya?
...Just one more thing - this is
for you.
Pushes the gun lying on the table toward Frankie.
FRANKIE
What do I need this for?

FRANKIE
Dont be such a worrier. I was with
Eduardo - we were drinking, so I
stayed with him.
ANGEL
Eduardo! Frankie, hes no good for
you! You promised me youd stay
away from him.
FRANKIE
Apologetically but with anger.
I didnt promise anything - Quit
trying to run my life!
ANGEL
Prison friends are not what you
need.
Angel reaches across the table to sooth him, touches the cut
on his hand.
Frankie tears his arm away knocking a plate with eggs to the
floor.

31.
ANGEL (contd)
Frankie!
FRANKIE
Damn!
He gets up, goes to the stove, grabs a worn towel from the

FRANKIE (contd)
Im sorry... youve been so good to

He wipes the floor and tosses food and towel into the
garbage. Wipes his hands and leaves the room.
Frankie returns
FRANKIE (contd)
Hey, I got something for you. Since
youre my guardian angel, I got
this for you. Sorry about...
As he says he is sorry, Frankie offers her a small object
wrapped in tissue. Angel wipes her hands and unwraps a
beautiful angel pin from the tissue.
ANGEL
Whered ...
She starts to ask where he got it, decides not to probe.
Admires the pin.
ANGEL
Thanks Frankie. Its beautiful.
FRANKIE
Its OK, I just wanted to give you
something after being so good to me
the last couple months.
ANGEL
Its alright, you needed a place to
stay. You can stay as long as you
need to.
FRANKIE
For all youve done for me Sis Nods toward the pin.

32.

Thanks
Angel admires the pin, puts her hand on his shoulder as a
gesture of thanks.
As he leaves, Angel looks the pin over carefully, looks
toward the doorway, and gently sets the tissue and angel pin
on the table.

INT. IPM OFFICE - DAY - MORNING

Gwen is working. Angel arrives
GWEN
Again this week, sales is asking
for more stats. Now on Wilson
Industries, Delano Pharma and
Carlson...
ANGEL
Seems sometimes that research is
more like spy-search. If we dig any
deeper were gonna know who wears
briefs and who wears boxers.
GWEN
And who goes commando.
laughs
Things any more exciting at the
truck stop?
ANGEL
looks shy, hesitant
Ever since the Highway got moved

more like a ghost-town.
pauses in her work - thoughtful
Did have a few more visits from
Nick, my Mr. Mysterious - hes very
seductive. I cant keep my eyes off
him. Hes kinda hypnotic.
GWEN
Sounds like hes coming back for a
reason - and Im sure its not for
the coffee.

33.

ANGEL
He makes me feel special. Hes got
me wanting him, but Im not sure he
feels the same.
GWEN
Be careful girl. I know how easy it
can be to fall for a guy - I dont
want you hurt.
ANGEL
Probably too late for that. He
knows how to push my buttons.
sigh
GWEN
Yeah specially when buttons and
zippers come undone.

95

INT. CAR ON THE WAY - DAY

GWEN
So has Gordy called you again?
ANGEL
He called and he makes come-on
moves, but hes just a big kid not really someone I could fall
for. Besides with him on the road
and my night job we cant really
get together anyway. Heck, I hardly
see my own brother and we live
together.
GWEN
Yeah, with him driving cab now.
Hows that working out?
ANGEL
At least its something. After
prison he really had a hard time
getting any job.
GWEN
That really sucks. He shoulda
never served time anyhow.
ANGEL
He was in the wrong place, hanging
out with the wrong people. Crossing
the state line with that stolen car
was really stupid.
Drive on in silence.
ANGEL (contd)
(Emotional)
Frankie was such a shy, sweet kid.
Now hes restless and hard to talk
to. I never know what hes
thinking. Im afraid hes headed
for trouble again.

39.

Pulling up to restaurant.
GWEN
If you think it would help, I could
talk to him - maybe hed open up to

FRANKIE

FRANKIE
You are desperate for a date!
they both laugh

108

EXT. STREET IN CHINATOWN - NIGHT

Her car pulls up to curb. Lots of people, couples and
families on street.
As they walk GWEN
So since your folks died, Angel has
been feeling responsible for both
of you?
FRANKIE
Yeah, our Moms sister took us in
for a while but "Uncle" Max wasnt
happy to have us. He treated us
like servants. Hed tell Angel she
was stupid and worthless. I really
hated him.

44.

GWEN
That sounds terrible
FRANKIE
Angel kept trying to protect me.

INT. BOOTH IN RESTAURANT

They are mid-eating - Thai food with chopsticks, finger food

FRANKIE
I was seventeen when I got involved
with the guys that were stealing

easy at the time. Wed figured wed
been fucked-with so stealing was
just payback. Unfortunately Id
turned eighteen when we got caught
so I had to do time as an adult.
GWEN
Thats rough. So getting a job now
has been tough?
FRANKIE
Yeah, but the cabs not so bad. And
I have time to do other things.
GWEN
(interested)
What kind of other things?
FRANKIE
pulls back - said too much
Things... like dating desperate
friends of my sister!
they laugh again
GWEN
Frank - thanks for understanding I do feel better knowing how you
and Angel look out for each other.

ANGEL
So you didnt think Frankie was
preoccupied at all?
GWEN
He was even OK after I explained
that it was a set-up to supposedly
find out about you.
ANGEL
Well, as sneaky as we were I still
worry about him and why hes moody
at home.
GWEN
Maybe youre just imagining it. You
have to expect some reaction from
being in jail. He seemed fine to
me. I could even see dating him for
real.
ANGEL
It might keep him out of trouble
when hes not driving cab.
They continue working quietly.

46.

Angel enters.
ANGEL
Sorry I was late. I had car
trouble.
LESTER
Angel, have a seat. Im not so
concerned with that, although if it
continues, I could be.
Lester takes up a file from his desk, then sits on the edge
above her.
The company has certain other
concerns about our employees even
extending into how they conduct
themselves outside the office.
ANGEL
I dont think its any of the
companys business. This is only
the second time Ive done it.
LESTER
Done what?
ANGEL
Stayed at the Mot...
What are you talking about?

48.

LESTER
Our other Divisions want to make
sure of an even playing field for
all sales reps. Since you have
shown some "contact" with Gordy
Wells outside the office, corporate
wants assurance that he doesnt get
"special treatment".
ANGEL
indignant
Special like what?
LESTER
You know, confidential research
information that only he gets.
ANGEL
I see.
LESTER
Has Gordy gotten "Special
treatment"?
ANGEL
NO! He has not! Whatever else the
company may suspect, I am an adult
and I can do as I like.
LESTER
I assure you our only interest is
in company affairs, not private
ones.
ANGEL
Are we done?
LESTER
Well,...yes.
Angel rises to door.
Oh, Angel.
She turns.
Lester smirking
Dont be late again - even if it
was only "your second time".

49.

121

INT. FILING AREA

GWEN
What was that all about?
ANGEL
Well at first I thought they were
spying on my every move. but its
just about not giving Gordy a hand
up on the other divisions in sales.
GWEN
Thats all?
ANGEL
Theres more. Lets talk at lunch.

GWEN
No wonder you jumped to
conclusions. Do you think Mr. Lopez
knows what you meant?
ANGEL
Lester Lopez is too caught up in
company policy to think about
anything else.
GWEN
Well, tell me more about Nick.
ANGEL
You mean other than I cant resist
him. I know Im not his only lover,
but Hell, I cant stop thinking
about him? Staying all night again
was wonderful.
Shakes her head - changes subject
Unfortunately it will be the last
Ill see of him for a while. He
does some kind of confidential

EXT. CEMETERY - LATE AFTERNOON

Through the trees the funeral service is ending. Several
expensive cars are parked behind one hearse. A small group
is gathered graveside. From behind the priest we see the
mourners.
FR. DOMINIC
... ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
Fr. Dominic closes his prayer book and steps toward the
widow (ANN MCGOVERN). She and her sister(RITA GRIMES) are
seated. Everyone else is standing.
Viewed from across the coffin, Dominic steps up to the widow
to speak to her, holding her hand in his.
The widow and her sister are late-forties and quite
attractive. The sisters neckline is rather revealing for a
funeral and she is looking intently at Dominic as he
consoles the widow. He nods to Rita and then steps away to
shake hands with other mourners.
Rita follows him with her eyes as she and Ann walk to the
car behind the hearse. ROBERT (the chauffeur) is waiting by
the car. As the two sisters talk the remaining mourners are
dispersing. Dominic is still with a small group by the grave
site.
RITA(TO HER SISTER)
Wait with Robert, Ill be back in a
minute.
Widow Ann enters back seat as Rita looks toward the
remaining cars. Dominic and the last few are approaching
their cars.
Rita walks toward Dominic. As he approaches she takes his
hand.

51.

RITA
Holding his hand in both of hers and pulling them close to
her.
Father Dominic, I wanted to
personally thank you again for your
kind words. I want you to know how
much our family has appreciated
your support in the past and today.
My sister asked me to let you know
that you are welcome to come back
to the house.
DOMINIC
Taking in her come-on attitude
Thank you so much, Mrs. Gaines...
RITA
Please, remember, call me Rita.
Dominic glances toward MONSIGNOR, who is standing near by.
DOMINIC
Rita - thank you for the kind
offer. Id love to be of service to
you and your sister...
however Ill have to make it
another time.
RITA
Im sad that you cant come now.
But I hope well see you again
soon.
Releases his hand slowly. He follows her with his eyes as
she turns to go in the limo .
Rita enters the limo. She gives him a flirting look as her
skirt rides up.
Dominic smiles to himself as the limo pulls away. A hand is
laid on his shoulder.
MONSIGNOR
Mrs. Gaines seems rather taken by
you Dominic. But neither I nor your
family approve of your counseling
technique.

MONSIGNOR (contd)
Remember they placed you at St.
Augustine to keep you out of
trouble.
These special assignments are meant
to keep you too busy to wander. You
dont want to disappoint your
family again do you?
DOMINIC
No, Monsignor, of course not.
MONSIGNOR
I do have another project for you.
Lately the clinic protests have
been getting more bad press. If you
were to make an appearance, you
could help by being a calming
influence at the next rally.
DOMINIC
Of course, whatever you want.
Dominic turns and gets into his Mercedes.

134

EXT. BY CROWD - DAY

Approaching a group with signs.
BARBARA
How long have you been involved in
the movement?
SPEAKER ONE
When I heard about babies being
murdered, I knew I had to do
something.
BARBARA
I understand your anger. How about
the other services provided by this
clinic. Prenatal advice, teen
pregnancy prevention, STD
information and treatment?
SPEAKER ONE
That dont count if they are still
murderers!
Barbara to priest
BARBARA
How about you Father, why are you
here?
FR. DOMINIC
wearing sunglasses
The people here need guidance and
support. Since the crowds are so
large, I felt a calming influence
is needed. We dont want trouble.

57.

BARBARA
Yes, the police dont want trouble
either and abortion is still legal.
SPEAKER ONE
Thats why Im here - Were gonna
change that!
SPEAKER TWO
Speaker two is a man with a large photo sign of a "partial
birth abortion" moves forward and advances on a police tape
barrier.
The unborn deserve to live!
He tosses the sign down and pulls a bag from under his
jacket. He heaves it toward the building. A bag of "blood"
breaks against the window of the waiting room.
Police move forward and roughly take the man away.
BARBARA
Did you get all that?
LUCY
Yes! Well maybe well make that
special yet.

about abortion next Sunday. He
OK-ed it if we make it anonymous
and keep the camera low key and no
mobile van outside. Just us.
BARBARA
Great job Lucy. That might be the

DOMINIC/NICK
Startled at her voice but quickly takes on his controlling
and soothing style.
Secrets and surprises go hand in

to be secret. I never intended to
let the two mix. You must believe
me. I still wanted you, I had to
leave before I got too involved.
How did you find me?

Caresses her. She is turned on by his charm. They are
reflected in the mirror in the closet, silhouetted in the
window light.
ANGEL
Pulls away from his advances
I have some news for you.
You are "Father" Dominic in more
ways than one.
He looks down at her puzzled at first and then down to her
belly.
DOMINIC
That cant be!
ANGEL
Well, it is. You are the only one.
Remember when you didnt want the
condoms - "to feel more special",
you said.
DOMINIC
What do you plan to do?
ANGEL
Do? Im pregnant - what do you
think?
DOMINIC
You have to get rid of it!
ANGEL
IT! How can you even consider that!
Whats wrong with you?
DOMINIC
I only want whats right for you.
Ill help you. You know you can
trust me.

65.

ANGEL
But you left me, and now Im having
your baby!
DOMINIC
I need you.
He holds her and tries to sooth her.
I always wanted you - but a baby
cant be part of my life. You have
to get rid of it.
Pulls back realizing that she is not taken in by his charm.

163

INT. HIS OFFICE

BARBARA
Hi Phil, Thanks for getting back to me so soon.
PHIL
Your reputation from Sheriff
Windslow was very positive. He said
your intuitions were always good.
One of these days helping others is
gonna get me fired. But if you can
help me Ill help you.

67.

BARBARA
What can you tell me?
PHIL
The plates are registered to Frank
and Angelica Fortunatto. Heres the
address and other info.
Hands her a paper. Barbara looks it over.
BARBARA
No record for her, but I see her
husband has seen some time and some
juvenile stuff too.
How about the other thing?
PHIL
Hands her a second paper.
Father Dominic has quite the
history. No criminal record but his
pedigree is long. Went to private
schools then Princeton and Harvard.
His uncle is a bishop and the
family fortune goes back
generations. He has been reassigned
often. Four times in the last seven
years.
So what have you got for me?
BARBARA
Ill get you clued in as soon as
Im sure of my suspicions. I cant
tell you more unless I know
absolutely.
PHIL
Well, if you ever decide to quit
the glamor of TV - youd be welcome
here. Keep your nose clean and
dont get busted.
BARBARA
Thanks again Phil, Ill be back in
touch soon I hope.

68.

164

EXT. ANGELS APARTMENT - DUSK

Barbara gets out of her car. Checks a mini recorder and

from the office.
ANGEL
Yes?
BARBARA

speak with you for a few moments?
ANGEL
I know who you are.
looks around to see if Barbara is alone
What do you want?
BARBARA
Its not something to discuss out
here. May I come in?
ANGEL
looks again at hall
OK, I guess, but make it quick. I
have to leave soon.

166

INT. APARTMENT FRONT ROOM -DUSK

Barbara enters. Checks out room. Pulls up a straight chair
by the door and gestures Angel to sit. Angel looks
perplexed. Takes off her coat, lays it on the sofa and sits
next to it.
BARBARA
This is awkward, but Ill make it
as direct as I can ... I was at St.
Augustines on Sunday. I was taping
the mass for a project ... I was
leaving when I saw you at the back
of the church. I saw you go to
speak to Father Dominic.

69.
ANGEL
Fidgets, looks away - starts to get up - stares at Barbara
What do you want!
BARBARA
I heard your conversation. Im here
to help you.
ANGEL
stands
I dont need your help. You better
leave!
BARBARA
There is something else. The reason
I stayed behind.
gestures toward Angels coat
ANGEL
sits
What are you talking about?
BARBARA
That pin on your coat. Its very
distinctive. Ive never seen
another one like it.
ANGEL
pissed
This is about you liking my
jewelery!
BARBARA
No - Sorry, you misunderstood. That
pin is from a famous collection. It
was stolen.
ANGEL
What are you saying?
BARBARA
I followed you at church because of
the pin. My overhearing your
conversation was an accident.
ANGEL
So what does a TV news reporter
have to do with any on this?

70.
BARBARA
My story on the family clinic just
got very interesting when I learned
that the priest leading the
Pro-life movement has a mistress
and is pressing her to abort his
child.
ANGEL
standing
I should never have let you in.
Please leave.
BARBARA
Unfortunately the pin on your
collar ties you to a crime. So Im
not done yet.
Angel sits down again - defeated.
BARBARA (contd)
Tell me about the pin.
ANGEL
I cant do that.
BARBARA
Its from Frank isnt it?
ANGEL
She tears up - stands again - goes to window.
Damn! Damn! I should have known!
Ever since our parents died, he
cant stay out of trouble.
BARBARA
Frank is your brother?
ANGEL
Frankie is three years younger.
Ive been taking care of him since
I was fourteen... Guess I havent
done a very good job.
BARBARA
Where is he now?
ANGEL
I guess hes driving his cab. his
hours are very irregular, so I
never know.

71.

BARBARA
Heres what I have in mind. I want
to expose Father Dominic for his
duplicity. If Frank is not in too
deep, I have connections in the
police that could go light on him.
ANGEL
So you want me to inform on my
lover to save my brother?
BARBARA
If Im right about Frank, he may be
OK. But if hes done more than a
few burglaries he might be in real
trouble.
ANGEL
And what about Nick, I mean
Dominic?
BARBARA
Hes on his own. Hes been
transferred before for his
misdeeds. Mostly Im interested in
the big picture. Hes just part of
the story.
ANGEL
So what do you want from me?
BARBARA
You dont have to be identified on
camera. Just answer questions about
your relationship with Dominic.
ANGEL
I dont know about this!
BARBARA
pulls out the turned on recorder
Id like to convince you to
cooperate.
ANGEL
You bitch!
BARBARA
Take it easy. I only want to get
the story out and you are a key
element.

72.
ANGEL
What about Frankie?
BARBARA
Talk to him. Find out what hes
done, and Ill do my best to make
it easy on him.
ANGEL
Why should I trust you?
BARBARA
Cause you need me, and I need you.
Stands and goes to the door
Talk to Frank and get back to me.
hands her a card
And make it quick.
167

I...I got it from a guy.
ANGEL
Frankie! I need to know the truth.
You cant lie to me!
She pulls her arms around herself - (its cold outside)
FRANKIE
He tries to put his arms around her, she shakes him off.
I got it from Eduardo.
ANGEL
Jesus, Frankie didnt you figure it
was stolen - why would Eduardo have
something like this?

74.

FRANKIE
How do you know it was stolen?
171

EXT. OVERVIEW OF TRUCK-STOP/RESTAURANT PARKING LOT - NIGHT

INT. CAR - NIGHT

NICK
Do you need help?
ANGEL
puzzled
Help? What do you mean?
NICK
You know, to get rid of it.
ANGEL
It! It! What kind of a monster are
you?
NICK
I just need to be sure no one
knows....
ANGEL
No one knows that a respected "man
of the cloth" is a hypocritical,
philandering, son-of-a- bitch!
Nick turns away. Lights a cigarette.
NICK
I have to maintain the right
appearances. A baby doesnt fit in
the picture.
ANGEL
You bastard!
NICK
thinks its funny
Well, yes. But we dont want
another one do we.
ANGEL
How can you conduct yourself in
church or even show your face at
the protests feeling like that?
NICK
Feeling?
Self-preservation is my only
concern.

76.

ANGEL
Well, self-preserve this you
son-of-a-bitch. The news-lady that
came to the church overheard our
little tale and is ready to expose
you.
NICK
How do you know?
ANGEL
She came to me - its all over for
you.
NICK
Well see about that.
Starts his car and motions for her to leave.
175

EXT. PARKING LOT - NIGHT

Angel exits car. He drives off. She stands until he is out
of sight.

176

INT. TV CREW TRUCK

BARBARA
She is pulling together equipment.
Ill arrange the camera and light
myself. I promised complete privacy
for this interview. Ill call when
Im done and you can bring the
truck back to pick me up. OK?

The union would bust me for this if
it got around. As far as Im
concerned you took the stuff
without my knowledge.

177

EXT. OUTSIDE OF ANGELS APARTMENT - DUSK

Barbara on the stairs with the equipment. TV Truck drives

77.

178

INT. HALLWAY BY APARTMENT

Barbara knocks.
ANGEL
Looks around in hall.
Are you alone?
BARBARA
I promised. No one will be able to
know who you are in the interview.
Just give me a few minutes to set
up.

179

INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT

Angel is in a chair back-lit by video light on wall. Barbara
at the camera.
BARBARA
Lets start by how Father Dominic
first met you.
ANGEL
I had no idea he was a priest. I
never discovered it til I saw him
on the news.
BARBARA
Who did you know him as before
that?
ANGEL
Nick - thats how I knew him - was
very charming. He came into the
restaurant where I work. When we
first talked, he seemed so nice.
BARBARA
Go on.
ANGEL(VO)
It was easy to open up to him. It
was a very quiet evening and before
I knew it I practically told him my
life story.
Replay of Nick and Angel in restaurant - talking and
laughing - she taken in by him.

78.
BARBARA(VO)
And after that first night?
ANGEL(VO)
He seemed to be around more and
more. Then he met me in the city.
He arranged a private dining room
at the Hyatt. No one ever gave me
that kind attention before. I
trusted him. He seemed to really
care for me. He also had power over
me. We did things I had never
experienced before.
Hotel rendezvous, dinner, bedroom, varied scenes of passion.
BARBARA
You enjoyed the excitement?
ANGEL
And the glamor. He was very
secretive about his work. He told
me the government kept the motel
room as a remote office. It became
routine to see him there as well.
Our time together was intense.
BARBARA
What happened to change that
relationship?
ANGEL
He broke it off suddenly. Said he
had to leave the country. Never
came back to the motel or called me
again.
BARBARA
That was it?
ANGEL
I was devastated at first. I had
not told him I was pregnant. I was
afraid he might reject me if I did.
I resolved to keep the baby.
BARBARA
And then you saw him in my
interview?
ANGEL
I couldnt believe it at first. I
had to go and see for myself at the
church.

79.
What was "Nick"/Father Domonics
reaction?
ANGEL (contd)
He said he wanted me to have an
abortion. That was out of the
question for me, but he insisted I
do it. He was afraid of the
publicity if it got out. He
couldnt accept the idea of being a
parent.
BARBARA
So is there any doubt that Father
Dominic Gregor of St. Augustine is
responsible for your pregnancy?
ANGEL
Are you insinuating I sleep around?
...No, He is the one. I havent
been with anyone else for over a
year.
BARBARA
And even though he has been a
spokesman for the Pro-life movement
he has insisted that you abort the
baby?
ANGEL
Yes. He acted so differently as
Nick. Then he was charming and
exciting. As Domonic he is cold and
uncaring. After I confronted him at
the church, he came to my job at
the diner and made it very clear
that he wanted me to abort the
baby.
BARBARA
Have you seen him since? What are
you planning to do?
ANGEL
No, and I dont want to see him. I
believe that abortion is immoral
and I will have the baby, God
willing.
BARBARA
Shuts off camera and stands.
That should do it. As for the
stolen jewelry if Frank will talk

about Frank that she is threatening
you with?
ANGEL
Just that she knows the pin is
stolen and I got it from Frankie.
GWEN
What does Frank say?
ANGEL
He says he got it from that idiot
Eduardo.
GWEN
You believe him dont you?
ANGEL
I dont know what to believe.
GWEN
Well, you should believe him. I
have a confession to make. Frank
was here when you called tonight.
ANGEL
WHAT?
GWEN
Ive been wanting to tell to you.
But your life was complicated
enough. Weve been seeing each
other for a while.
ANGEL
You and Frankie?
Angel hits Gwens shoulder with a gentle punch.
You should have told me.

83.

GWEN
Well, actually tonight was the
first time we - um- ah - you know.
ANGEL
Wow, and I call and louse it up.
GWEN
Well, yeah. But you needed to talk.
You feel better now?
ANGEL
Im still mixed up but not panicked
like I was.
GWEN
Then I have some more to tell you.
Ever since that night Frank and I
came to see you at the truck-stop
weve been together a lot. He
didnt want you to know - I think
because he was afraid to tell you
things that he was sharing with me.
ANGEL
What kind of things?
GWEN
I guess cause he was doing stuff
with Eduardo and you dont like
that.
ANGEL
He was afraid to tell me but he
could talk with you?
GWEN
Well, yeah. - Please dont be mad
at him or me. He was trying to
protect you.
ANGEL
From what?
GWEN
Eduardo was threatening to harm you
if Frank didnt give him
information. Information about
people who ride his taxi leaving
town. Edwardo could then break in
to steal stuff.

84.

ANGEL
I knew it would come to no good. I
told Frankie to stay away from him!
GWEN
He has stopped. Thats part of why
he was here tonight - trying to
figure how to tell you about it.

Domonic starts to stand.

DOMINIC

You have brought shame on the

Now is there anything else we
should know before letting you walk
out of here?
EDUARDO
(relaxed)
Naw, you got it all - I been good just took a chance on that house.
My bad luck they had the alarm. I
learned my lesson.
PHIL
Glad to hear it. How is it you
picked that house anyway?
EDUARDO
I was just driving around and Im
low on cash. It looked quiet.
I aint done nothin else since I
got otta the joint. Ask my parole
officer.

Thats it?
EDUARDO
Yeah, I seen him at a bar a couple
of times - what of it?
PHIL
Did you talk with him?
EDUARDO
Yeah, I guess - so?
PHIL
Let me refresh your memory. We had
a reason to talk with Frank
recently and he says you pressured
him to give you info on people
leaving town. Is that true?
EDUARDO
I never ... He came to me. I didnt
want ... I mean it was all his
idea. Im clean - I swear!
PHIL
So Frank did give you information
about people leaving town?
EDUARDO
I aint admitting nothin!
PHIL
I see. Mr, Ernesto, let me remind
you that when you cooperate things
will go much better for you.

102.

Let me ask you about the Gregory

Morgan robbery and beating - can
