WAS

GONZALO

PRAISING

OR

BEING

SARCASTIC

TO

THE

BOATSWAIN?

Gonzalo may be praising the Boatswain, as he was the only one in the
situation that could save their lives. They had the King aboard and Gonzalo
decided to keep quiet for the sake of protecting the King. Also, he praised the
Boatswain in order to calm him down. Considering that he is a councillor, he
had to play his part in calming down and seek for peace, not to break out a
fight. Gonzalo wanted to get rid of the tension between him and the
Boatswain. His nature side of a councillor may understand that when chaos
ensues, the Boatswain was in panic and concealed it by taking it out on the
guests. Gonzalo understood why the Boatswain acted that way as inevitably
people will act panicky in chaos. Perhaps, the Boatswain was under tension to
the fact that he was under control of saving both the boat and the people on
board including himself. Considering his rigidity, the guests were blocking him
and this adds up his level of frustration. Gonzalo was helpless to the fact that
the Boatswain had no choice but to play the role of a commander and this
meant that the Boatswain had the right to speak to him in that way as the
Boatswain knew we was the only key to survival. Also, the boatswain made a
good point that the King could only control people but not nature.
WAS PROSPERO ANGRY WITH HIS BROTHER, ALONSO OR TAKING IT OUT ON
MIRANDA?
I think that Prospero was taking it out on Miranda, as he wanted to express his
anger towards his brother, Alonso to Miranda. He wanted her to understand
why he caused the shipwreck. He explained to her fragile state of mind that it
was for vengeance. Prospero has bottles up his emotions of anger and despair
for almost 12 years and he finally could release it all out on someone,
Miranda. She was the only people on the stranded island that he could talk to
other than himself. As he explained to Miranda about how his brother
betrayed him, you could sense that his anger is building up. The more he
talked, the angrier he got. In a sense, he is oblivious to the fact that he is
actually taking it out on poor and confused Miranda. Prospero being a good
brother gave his position of the Duke of Milan to his brother, Alonso, as he
wanted to further his studies in his art if magic. Unexpectedly, Alonso
deceived him and overthrew Prospero by sending him off to the stranded
island that they were on. Feasibly, Prospero was telling Miranda about the past
so that she would not be empathic towards the shipwreck and the people on
board.
