Introduction
1.1 Scope of Document
The purpose of this document is provide the design data for the onshore section of the CO2
pipeline which forms part of Kingsnorth Carbon Capture and Storage Project, Transport
Pipeline and Injection Facilities Project. The document collates all of the design data to be
used and the assumptions to be made in undertaking the design activities.
The limits of the onshore pipeline for this document are shown in Figure 1.1 and are defined
as follows:
Pipeline landfall valve;
Kingsnorth CCS pig launcher.

This document will be reviewed and updated as necessary during the course of the design
to reflect changes necessary to meet E-ON requirements.
1.2 Definitions

Assumptions
The following assumptions shall be made:
Pipeline will be required to cater for both gas and dense phase flow;
The CO2 will be dried to better than 100ppmv. However, the specification delivered to the
pipeline will ensure that no free water or hydrate potential will exist in the pipeline or CO2
transport system;
Standard conditions that will govern the design flow rate are assumed as 1.01325bara and
15degC.

Design Requirements
3.1 Design Code
The onshore pipeline shall be designed in accordance with the requirements of PD 8010-1
[M12].
ASME B31.4 [M15] shall be used to supplement PD 8010-1 [M12] for areas not specifically
addressed by the code.
3.2 Design Life
The pipeline system shall have a design life of 40 years.
3.3 Process Data
3.3.1 Product Composition
The compositional data as presented in the Basis of Design for Studies - Phase 1 [S1] shall
apply.
3.3.2 Design and Operating Conditions
The pressure & temperature conditions which shall apply are summarised in Table 3.3.2-a.

The installation temperature for the pipelines is assumed to be 11degC, which is equivalent
to the average minimum temperature (July) for south-east England.
3.3.3 Fluid Classification
For design purposes the dense phase CO2 anticipated to be produced from the Kingsnorth
power station will be classified as Category E substance under PD 8010-1 toxic fluids that
are gases at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure conditions and are conveyed
as gases and/or liquids.
This classification and treatment of CO2 is subject to confirmation by 3rd parties.

3.4 Mechanical Design


3.4.1 Design Factors
Design hoop stress factors for the onshore pipeline section in accordance with the
requirements of PD 8010-1 [M12] are shown in Table 3.4.1-a below:

3.4.2 Pipe Diameter


The onshore section of the CO2 pipeline shall be designed to match the offshore pipeline
requirements.
The offshore pipeline shall be 36-inch NPS 914mm OD and the pipeline shall have a
constant ID to allow smooth transit of pigs.
3.4.3 Minimum Wall Thickness
In accordance with standard industry practice, the diameter to wall thickness ratio (D/t) for
the onshore pipeline should not exceed 96 unless it can be demonstrated that higher values
are not detrimental to the construction and in-situ integrity of the pipeline.
3.5 Materials
3.5.1 Linepipe Material
Mechanical calculations shall be based on linepipe of type SAWL in accordance with the
requirements of ISO 3183 [M13]. The selected material grade shall match that of the
offshore pipeline section, which is detailed in the document Offshore Pipeline Project Data
[S5].

SMYS and SMTS values to be de-rated appropriately for the design temperatures
in accordance with the requirements of DNV OS-F101 [M14].

3.5.2 Corrosion Allowance


A preliminary corrosion allowance of 1.5mm shall be assumed.
3.5.3 External Corrosion Protection
The buried sections of the onshore pipeline shall be protected against external corrosion
using an appropriate anti-corrosion coating. Typical properties for a 3 layer polyethylene
(3LPE) coating are presented in Table 3.5.3-a.

3.6.5 Route Classification


Preliminary location classes, in accordance with PD 8010-1, will be adopted to estimate
pipeline wall thickness requirements and proximities. The general pipeline location class
shall be as follows:
Class 2 to be adopted as a minimum for a distance of 800m from Highest Astronomical
Tide HAT as defined in the Offshore Pipeline Project Data [S5] and areas with a population
density greater than 2.5 persons per hectare;
Class 1 for sections along the onshore pipeline route with population densities less than 2.5
persons per hectare.
Final location classifications shall be determined during FEED when a field survey shall be
carried out.
3.6.6 Burial Depth
The pipeline shall be buried along its entire length to a minimum cover of 1.1m. At
crossings, the burial depth shall be increased in accordance with the requirements of PD
8010-1 [M12] or as required by crossing Owner.
3.6.7 Pipeline Separation
The minimum horizontal separation distance between the pipeline and any existing buried
pipelines shall be 5m.

3.6.8 Weight Coating


At water courses and areas subject to high water table, the pipeline shall be restrained
against float out by the use of cohesive backfill, set-on weights, concrete weight coating or
a combination thereof. The minimum thickness of concrete weight coating shall be 25mm.
